Does anyone know where I could find Indian hair jewelry like in the pictures below, or even what they are called?

http://kavitaassosiates.com/yahoo_site_admin/assets/images/7.87155923_std.jpg

http://www.fantastikasia.net/IMG/jpg/Dola-re-dola2_centre.jpg

http://www.fairtheatre.com/uploadedFiles/thumbnails/dolaredola.jpg

I've also seen a long gold or silver decorative "trim" that is meant to decorate the entire length of a braid, and is attached to a larger, more elaborate piece at the base of the braid, but I'm not sure of the name of that, either.

Thanks in advance.

I think those little swirl gems would look awesome swirled down a long braid. :D I'll have to do this when I get one. (a long braid) lol

I don't know places to look, but I can offer you a few terms, and hopefully our indian members can give you more. Tika/tikka are the things that lie on the top of your head with a dangle on your forehead (where the bindi spot goes). Paranda are those tassel things that you weave into a braid.

Thanks for the input.

I google-imaged "Paranda" and those are neat -- does this term also refer to metal strands that run the length of a braid, too? (Imagine an elaborate belt hung vertically and pinned to the braid)

Aisha posted a web link (http://www.carmaworld.com/Carma_Jewelry.aspx?catid=8) sometime ago when some one was looking for a tikka. There are lots of beautiful items on the site. I loved it so much. So I bookmarked. Aisha and other Indian ladies must know more!

Well this jewelry that goes on the hair and around the bun can be found in India mostly Calcutta and Hyderabad I never seen them in the states or on a site:shrug: Paranda is a string that is braided into the hairs and then at the end is tassles of jewels and jinglys its very beautiful and for like weddings holidays birthdays. You get this for cheap in Pakistan or India sorry I cant be more help.

This maatha pati is the closest you can get to that style then you put some jewels attacthed to the hairs

Yes the ebay stuff is nice! I'm not a fan of rhinestones or fake metals-gold and silver for me-but unfortunately, the price is high. I'm glad someone found at least one seller of the fine jewelry versions! Now to get rich quick...

I got some of this stuff, I must say it's pretty heavy, so you got to secure it well. Part of the jewelry in the picture you posted is part of the earring (Indian earrings are sometimes so heavy they need a loop over the ear)

I have no idea, you must be right. I thought the Bollywood jewellery (necklace with tikka and earrings) wouldn't be heavy, but I can't judge by looking at the pictures! The braid Billai aka jadai-nagam looks heavy though.

I'm not sure how long it will take for them to arrive, probably another week and a half. It looks like I've got earrings, necklace and hair ornament :) These will look awesome with my belly dance costumes and I plan to have my students order some for our show in April or May- yay bulk order discounts! I'm really not sure what I'll be doing with the hair ornament but I'm excited to experiment when it gets here :)

You see in bollywood movie it looks like one peice but its not its many peices put together to make it look like that in the hairs. Its really many set up as one big peice.
This jewelry isnt heavy for me but I guess you have to grow up on this kinds to say that.

This thread has helped me to learn the name of a type of hair ornament I've been admiring for years: The ones that have a large top section like a brooch that attaches to the hair, with long strands that lie atop the braid, or maybe could be braided into it? Like this fancy one:

http://sareesale.com/images/costume_jewelry_sale_pln_9430ssc.jpg

Apparently it's a choti....? Indian friends, is that correct? Because I'm beginning to think that word may just mean "braid"...

All I know is I would love to try making myself some much-less-elaborate ones, but from the photos I've been able to find online I can't figure out how the long strands could be attached so that they stay lined up with the braid. I can see there's a hook on the back of the top, brooch-like section; it's the length that has me stumped.

If anyone here knows about this, I'd be so grateful if you'd share your knowledge! :blossom:

Sibiryachka, I have never made one, but my aunt recently bought me one from India and apparently had a hard time locating it as no one wears them anymore! I know it as a Jada Nigam, it's probably called a choti in anther part of India. Mine had no easy way of connecting it to the braid, jut a hook at the top. But most Indian hair toys don't have conveniant ways to attach themselves to the hair so you have to get a bit creative. I have not worn mine yet but when I do I will hold it in place with gold coloured elastic and hope it blends in. I will lie the toy on my braid and tie pieces of elastic around the braid and toy so that they stay joned and do this several times down the whole length. Hope that makes sense!

This facebook group (https://www.facebook.com/group.php?gid=30619551938&v=photos) has some action shots, but no explanation of how to secure it.

The easiest way to probably make one is to have the sort that are just made up of pieces which are not attached to each other like this
http://www.aumkaarfashions.com/servlet/the-4626/Hair-choti%2C-jada%2C-ornaments/Detail
That way you can put a pin on each piece and it does not matter about your hair being too long or short for your toy as long as you space them evenly down the braid. For contrast, here is a similar looking one which is attached all the way down. http://www.aumkaarfashions.com/servlet/the-4561/6110-Polki-beads-jada/Detail

I just recently ordered one like this (http://www.ebay.com/itm/BOLLYWOOD-GOLD-PL-CZ-FLOWER-LONG-HAIR-TAIL-BUN-PIN-CHOTI-STICK-/260901876508?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item3cbef6b31c#ht_3305wt_932) from this Ebay shop, but the flowers are a bit more delicate. Mine is the same length but has seven smaller flowers. I don't know quite how to wear it yet because I have a lot of braid left over, so I have to say, I wish it was a bit longer. The piece is exquisite though and the service was fabulous.

ETA: Mine has one hook at the top, and I was thinking that I would just wrap one of those clear elastics around the choti and my braid about half way down and also just above the dangles.

Wow, thanks for the excellent replies, gang! I love this community so much... :grouphug: That totally clears up all my lingering questions. I'll put a pic here as well as in the "selfmade hairtoys" thread if I ever realize my vision.

My 30-year high school reunion will be next summer, by which time I should have reached waist, and I'm already planning how to maximize its impact and wow my classmates! Yes, that's all mine, and btw, I made this fabulous ornament.

Yeah, you know you're a longhair when...
