View Full Version : Anyone use Avocado Oil in their hair?

I am potentially interested in purchasing some Avocado Oil to use as an oil treatment for my hair as it is supposed to moisturize from what I've heard.

Can anyone here tell me of the benefits they experienced using Avocado Oil in their hair? How does it compare to coconut oil, EVOO, jojoba oil, sweet almond, and others?

Would it be a good purchase for me? I do have quite dry hair which has seemed prone to split ends lately!

Lastly, I've found some inexpensive Avocado Oil made by Natures Alchemy on Amazon.com and it says it's all natural. Is this a good choice?

Thanks so much in advance for responses.

You want to look and see if they have the ingredients listed, or if they will send you a copy. Avocado is like anything else, every one reacts differently to it. One person's hair may love it, but another's may hate it. The only real way to tell is to try it.

I sometimes use it on dry hair for an overnight oiling before washing in the morning. It's quite moisturising and easy to wash out.

I don't do pre-wash coconut oilings because I can't seem to wash it out without lots and lots of shampoo. My favourite overnight oil is Olive - which bizarrely everyone else seems to find harder to wash out than coconut - baffling

I use pure avocado oil on my hair on and off. It's a heavy oil but very good. The effect on my hair is somewhere between Camellia and Coconut oils.

I've found it's not as heavy as coconut oil or as light as camellia oil. I think it compares to EVOO and sweet almond oil. I got mine at Whole Foods. No need to order on line if you can find it in a grocery/health food store. I've used it for a hair and for OCM. I didn't find it any better or any worse than EVOO.

I find it comparable to olive oil --- those two work the best for me, but for some reason avocado breaks me out while olive oil does not.

Maybe because I'm half Italian? :)

Thank you for the replies. I have one more question about it. I watched some a very informative Youtube review on avocado oil and the woman said that avocado oil should be dark green in colour as that means it contains more of the good stuff like chlorophyll and other nutrients. However, the avocado oil I am looking at on amazon does not appear to be dark green in colour. The woman in the Youtube video said there are no differences in avocado oils as there are not different grades. However, I am wondering why the avocado oils that are cheap on amazon are lighter in color.

The avocado oil I have feels fairly light to me, ligther than EVOO and slightly heavier than coconut oil. Mine is undoubtedly green in color and stinks to high heaven, heheh
I like the effect of it in my hair, but I can't stand the smell, really makes me want to gag.
The smell of raw avocado is just fine, I used to make hair masks of it by stick blending it with egg yolk and honey and that didn't bother me at all.
I think the woman in the video is right when she says that avocado oil should be green...

I have the green one and the pale one, not much different in how they affect my hair-both very moisturising but the green one is great as a facial moisturiser especially when its cold, its very protective and great for dry skin. My skin feels very good with this on.

you should check on iherb.com......Their prices are a lot cheaper and shipping is very quick. They also beat the price. Let me know if you want to order from them because i have a $5 coupon.

I was recommended to check Iherb for Aubrey Organic products too. Yes, I am interested in a coupon please as I could probably get my order to $60 and qualify for free shipping :cheese: Ugh, becoming such a product junkie but I am interested in some organic products for my face as well.

Thanks for the offer of coupon!

I buy virgin cold pressed avocado oil from the supermarket, about £3.99 for 250ml, the oil on amazon i would bet is refined by the look of it and if i were you i'd hunt out gourmet grocers, health food shops and supermarkets to see if i could find some.
It's a long time sinse i used it on my hair, but when using a variety of different oils to compare effects i found it mostly strengthening. It has good penetrative properties when used on the skin and that's why i consider it a scalp oil, the more refined it is the less nutrients can be delivered.

sounds worth a look. I bet they sell avocado oil at WalMart but not sure if it's cold pressed. Thanks for all the replies. There are a lot of things I want to order off iherb but I will probably wait on the avocado oil as it doesn't look greenish in colour.

I bought some from brambleberry.com for soaping, and got tempted to try it on my hair. I like it much better than EVOO, coconut, pistachio butter, or almond butter. I love the smell of the nutty ones better but avacado oil leaves it more shiny, soft, and silky. I don't think it tangles as much.

But I have thick hair and razored ends. There isn't a HUGE difference between the different oils for me, though. So I wouldn't buy avocado oil thinking it will be a miraculous difference... just subtle, really. And I still have to use conditioner.

Avocado oil also works best for me if I do a heavy oiling at least an hour before shampooing and a light oiling after washing and conditioning.

Avocado oil is one of my favorite oils. Though I do admit to using the cheap refined oil.:o It is very light green, almost yellow. Oh well, when I can afford better......

As it is, avocado seems to soak in much better for me above most oils. It makes my hair slippery soft, and is my favorite skin oil too. My face never feels greasy, only dewy. It is comparable to shea butter in it's performance, except that it is lighter in texture than shea butter is.

I use almond, olive, coconut, and avocado on a regular basis, but I prefer avocado as far as oils go.:D

I do not use it as a deep oiling as it is expensive, rather I use a few drops every day to detangle and condition.

Hope this is helpful:)

I bought my avocado oil in a grocery store! It's very dark green and smells herby/soapy. But to me that is what the actual fruit smells like too.

I prefer avocado to any other oil for heavy overnight oilings, and I find even CO gets it out just fine. Daily oiling and misting mixes though I prefer coconut. I use avocado maybe once a week. I have never used it as a skin oil. I have used olive on my hair and it was OK (but then I have never used EV olive - just the plain kind.)

I'm a big avocado oil fan! I have wavy, very thick hair and it's one of the only oils that work to tame my hair. Coconut is great, too, but it just moisturizes. However, I did notice that when I was using Mountain Rose Herb's version (cold-expressed), I got a much better response.

I reordered another version and am not so pleased with it. So, not empirical but I think it depends on your hair as to how a certain product will work.

Mine is green and smells like, well, avacoado! I don't know if the color has anything to do with its properties, but I do like what it does for my hair. It's light enough for my fine hair and it always feels super soft after using it. It's also great on skin!

I tried avocado oil once. Wow it is a heavy duty oil, at least for my hair. I couldnt wash it out except after 3 times with an SLS poo. But that is my hair though.

I am also an avocado devotee, hands down best hair oil for me since I have found it to be VERY light and as my hair is so dry is soaks right in (on the skin as well, absolutely NO greasiness!). And in terms of technical benefits it's also one of the best, though of course if it's heavy on your hair you won't want to use it.
(Avocado: rich and nourishing, easily absorbed by deep tissue, fights aging, revitalizes mature skin, emollient good for dry skin, reduces sun spots, heals sun damage and scars, high in vitamins A, B1, B2, D, E, lecithin, potassium, regenerates collagen, good for eczema)

Avocado oil is one of my 2 favorite oils, however I found the dark green food grade oil to be way better than the pale cosmetic grade stuff. I think it actually helped my hair thicken up some and definitely made it softer. I would use it overnight in a heavy oiling and had no problems shampooing it out the next morning. I can't find the stuff now, the bottle I bought was on clearance at the grocery store and that was the last I saw of it. :(

I've never used it, though I've wanted too. -_-;; Most people say it's a good oil. Actually, Girlcat said she had great experience using it, which is why I wanted to try it. D: If only I could find it.

Actually, that's not true. I found it once at Marshall's, but I couldn't justify spending the money as I had books to pay for...which my dad bought for me. -_-;;

I get mine from the grocery store and it's brilliant, I use in my shea butter mix and also for straight oiling and I'm really happy with the results. I love the stuff and my husband sees it as another food item I put on my hair. :)
