Have you gone from ultra-short or pixie to APL, BSL, or beyond and have progress pictures to share for inspiration? Those of us who are currently shorties would love to see your progress in photos and know how long it took for you to get from there to here.

Inspire us, encourage us, and let us know that it won't take forever to grow long!!!

I have not been taking pictures since. 36" was my minimum goal and I reached that so I'm just staying there and beyond.

There are some more recent pictures of me in the meet reports for Michigan for those with the access permission but I didn't take the pictures.

I made this a while back too to show that I wasn't constantly trying to grow. My only main purpose along the way was to maintain hair long enough for a ponytail.
And when I was working in the late 90's I wanted it long enough to tuck under a hat at work to keep it out of machines. The chart is not necessarily accurate. I was going by what I remembered.

I don't know if I still have the pictures I took when I first joined LHC 2 1/2 years ago; I'll check.

I cut my almost-waist-length hair up to above chin for boot camp in December 2003... I know I have a picture of New Years 2004. I'll put those together for you later this afternoon.

Thanks, JoJo. How long did it take you to get from your pixie (and growing out all your layers) to your current length?

So far it has taken me exactly 37 months and 3 days! I go my hair cut on the 22/12/05.

I have never had the layers trimmed, but i did just dust my ends last year to even things up. I am now nearly all one length, the sides still need to catch up a teeny bit.

PurpleBubba: Thanks for the time line. It's so funny that you started it at age 3 -- that cracked me up. I can't believe how long your hair is!

Coriander: I appreciate your retrospective through the years. It must have been SO painful to have your waist-length hair all cut off in one fell swoop for boot camp -- I think I would have gone into shock!! Well, you certainly have rebounded and exceeded your prior length. You hair is so long and healthy now -- just lovely! (And you did a great job with the side-by-side setup!)

JoJo: Thank you for sharing the time span. It took you over three years? Yikes! Well, maybe now that I'm all at one length, I can cut that part of the time line out and hope that in two years I'll be close to where you are now (fingers crossed!).

This picture was taken in 2004; it's my henna example pic that has been posted in the mix section of H4H since then. I was happy with short hair for a while, but a year later it was shoulder length. It grew out partially because of inertia and indecision, and because I hated going to get it cut. Now I love it long! My sig picture is my current length. I've gotten some very hefty trims over the years, because I was never really trying to grow it longer. Now that I'm learning to play with it, I would like it a few inches longer so I can do more updos.

Wow, thank you! Also, Pixna, it was my decision to cut my hair for boot camp. We were given 2 1/2 minute showers and there wasn't any way to have very long hair (In Chicago. In January.) without having issues. I started growing it right back out as soon as I got home :D

Avalonna, your hair is gorgeous! Did it really just take you a year to get to shoulder length from short??!! If so, that is inspiration indeed!!!

RancheroTheBee, I totally see the resemblance between your hair and Avalonna's. You look like hair twins!

Coriander, thank you for the clarification. Even if it was a choice (and I can certainly understand why you made it!), I still think it would have been a difficult psychological adjustment, for me at least. Even though I went short gradually, when I did get a pixie cut, I had a meltdown (from which I'm still recovering).

I am a big believer in George michael the hairdresser not the singer, that hair grows quicker when it is all one length. He proclaims our bodies need a balance and when once are is cut shorter, as in layers the longer parts will slow down growing, whilst the shorter bits catch up.

The difference in my shortest layers and my length 3 years ago was about 4". Like I said before i have never had the layers trimmed in all this time but I dusted say ----> _ this much every month last year and now I have no layers. If hair grew all at the same rate then by rights I should have at least a 3" deficit even after my dustings.

I think you will reach my length a lot quicker than I did due to your hair already being once length, good luck time flys past and you will be there beofre you know it.

I went from near-waist to very short in July 2006. The first pic is my hair, which was dark red so it's a little difficult to see the length. The second shows how short I went (after stupidly listening to someone telling me I should cut it). The third is my first result after deciding to grow it out. The fourth is shortly after chopping off 3-4" of straggly layers and the fifth is my hair now after one full-head henna/cassia.

Take heart, I did not do a straight grow-out because my last hair stylist wasn't good at cutting long layers so they grew out (and still are) very uneven as they get longer so I cut off a lot once and do periodic little trims now.

However, having said that, I now feel like waist is within reach again. I am just a tiny bit past BSL and trimmed 1/8 in spots the other day. Keep at it!

You are so welcome, Pixna! Hey, it helps me, too, LOL! I still cannot believe that I actually listened to that girl who told me to chop off my hair. It's like I went completely insane for the space of a year. :)

Now, I'm finally comfortable just knowing that I am a long-haired girl and always have been. I mean what's the point of growing it, cutting and growing it right back again? Now, though, I'm in a lot better shape due to the tips on LHC so things are looking up!

I'm rooting for you. :cheese:

10/31/05: bad growing-out stage w/ different lengths. Part of it, anyway, is shoulder length. (I can't believe I'm posing such an awful pic of myself, but sadly it's the only one taken in 2005!)

Avalonna, thank you for the clarification. I think you look really cute in your photos, but you look amazing with your gorgeous long hair!

Shadow Walker, all I can say is WOW! You've got one incredible head of hair. I am SO jealous! So it took you 4 years to go from totally bald/buzzed to your current length? How did you do it? Did you trim at all during the course of growing it out? The pics on your album don't show the chronology. Could you give me a few more details?

Islandgrrl, your hair is a knockout, as is the color. Shazzam!!! So, in 2005, were you a super-short pixie like Juno? Once you got to chin length, did you continue to trim? Tell me more. I'd love to know your hairstory and how you got through all the growing pains. (By the way, you sure grew fast from March to November! I bet you are at waist-length now!)

Yep, going on 4 years real soon. I've got an old progress album somewhere that I haven't updated in awhile that shows my past progress, but I don't have very many pictures at all of my hair before I joined LHC.

I don't really have a secret or anything, I wash my hair every day (or close to it), and I've always tried to be as gentle as possible. I've only trimmed twice since I started growing it out, both times when my hair was around chin length, I had the hair on the back of my head trimmed so that it wouldn't be completely uneven. I think the last time a scissors touched my hair was about 2 years ago, or something like that. Once I got it all one length I just left it, it was just above shoulder length as of my last trim and now it's just a pinch above waist length.

I'm new here, and never thought before to take pictures of my hair from behind. I do have my most recent one. Junior year in highschool I cut my hair pixie length. I've cut it a few times since then but here's pictures of the progress. I cut my hair in November around thanksgiving in 2004. After that I grew my hair back out to shoulder length. and kept it trimmed around shoulder length until 2006. After that I only cut it a few times, the first time it was a few inches because my hair was all un even from a short cut. After that, just minimal trims. Then I trimmed my own hair yesterday, along with adding in some bangs, so the long hair pic from behind is from yesterday.

A few months after cutting pixie length so it's 2-3 inches longer than it was when I cut it (I cant find a pic from the month I cut it)around March

That's pretty much what happened to me. I had no real plans to grow it much longer. At one point I had a goal to grow out the layers (except bangs) enough so I could put my hair in a half-up. Then I was almost to pony-tail length, so I decided to grow that much longer. Now I'm at APL. :)

xkitxgirx: Your hair is quite beautiful (and you're really cute, too!)! It's funny that you have a back pic of it when it was short and you weren't even a member here yet. How did you know to do that??

Shadow Walker: Has your hair retained that lovely and perfectly rounded hemline even with no trims in 2 years??!! Did it just grow into that shape naturally? I'm impressed (and I'm hoping my hair will do the same thing)!! If you wash your hair daily, do you let it air dry? If so, how long does it take?

SHW: Wow! What gorgeous hair! It deserves to be long!! You've got amazing texture and color -- it's so straight and the hemline is perfect. I'm also awed that you have a pic from the back even before you joined LHC. Gosh, it never would have occurred to me to do that before joining here.

it started shorter than the picture but i refused to have my picture taken for the first couple months after this horrible cut.. i just thought it was so ugly.. it looked like a mullet when it was growing out because my underside grows twice as fast as my canopy (i have no idea why.. but my roots are always twice as long under there when i go to henna my roots so i know its not my imagination)

if its short enough then here is my length nowish (i say now-ish because i havent taken a pic in a while)

Though I don't have any photos, I know I grew from short pixie to bsl in less than 3 years. Cut to pixie in June of 2004 and had BSL by January of 2007. Aaaaand now I'm back to pixie again. :p It is encouraging to remember that my hair grew quite quickly last time. Must keep this in mind during the dark times.

Good luck to all those grow and WOWZERS to all those who have grown from little sprouts.

I couldn't access your hair album, and the only album I saw on your page is for Jack. Is there some other way I can view your progress? Also, about how long did it take you to grow from there (scary short) to here (long and luscious)?

Tiggens: Hello, my friend and sister shortie (soon to be longhair). Thank you for your reply. I'm hoping that now that I'm at chin length, and all the layers have grown out, that it won't take me 2.5 years to get to BSL. I think I might have to commit hari-kari (or should that be "hairy-kari") if that would happen!!

well my hair broke off at the shoulder for nearly a year after that was taken because i just kept doing full head bleachings because i didnt know how to do roots only(i liked to have my hair all sorts of weird colors.. pink, purple, blue,etc..) .. ive trimmed nearly 8 inches since joining in august 2007.. i joined at shoulder length.. 15 months from shoulder to that pic with like 7-8 inches trimmed.. it would have taken me less than a year to grow that horrible cut to my current length if i hadnt treated my hair so badly before joining..

Pixna: Nah, I don't think it will take you so long. My hair in 2004 was about the length it is now so you're ahead of the game by at least 8 months if not more. I actually do not remember the grow-out process AT ALL but I know I had a few trims while it was still short and then I think I rarely cut it until it was bsl. I think my secret was the "unwatched pot" approach. :p

This time around I want to try to tough out the mullet stage and not tidy up as I go, I think I got two trims that year, and I'm curious about how much "length" those trims actually cost me.
Last time I did it that way, now I want to try it this way.. :D

ok well i can tell you one thing about the mullet stage which was like 4 months long for me.. wearing wide headbands (http://store.americanapparel.net/8437p.html)that go all the way around the head can disguise the mullet stage.. you could also tie a scarf around your head like a headband.. i also wore a few hats.. you can get through it...

Actually, that won't be an option for me, I'm a security guard and work in uniform :)
But I was thinking of disguising it with a ponytail, I don't think people will think twice about a ponytail and shorter pieces in front, around here I see lots of girls actually sporting that as a look!

Fluke, I agree with Squiggy. I trimmed the "mullet" and lost quite a bit of length (well, a few inches, but that's quite a lot at the shortie stage). Hang in there! I can't believe how much progress you've made already. I thought your hair was still at the pixie stage, but you are far past that!! We're on our way!! Wheeeeee!!

Squigs: I got your PM -- thank you!

Tiggens: Ah, the "unwatched pot" approach. That's what I need to do (rather than checking every 5 minutes to see if its grown any!!). ;)

xkitxgirx: Your hair is quite beautiful (and you're really cute, too!)! It's funny that you have a back pic of it when it was short and you weren't even a member here yet. How did you know to do that??

Thanks! :o Yeah, that picture was actually after it had grown a teensy bit and I had cut it again myself. I had taken a picture of it from the back to post online for a couple of my friends.

You thought right Pixna, my hair IS just about an inch longer than the photo in my signature, the pictures are from March '07 to March '08! :)

The last picture I posted was the last picture I have of my hair before I cut it again last summer.. :)

I don't know if this would be an option for you, but my sister is currently mulletting and she puts her long, back pieces into two pigtails. It actually looks pretty cute without being too cutesy and does it's good fighting the good fight against the big M.

Yup, my hem is the same as it was two years ago when I last had my hair trimmed. I had it cut that way so it would grow out rounded, and I'm quite surprised that I haven't had to get any trims to keep it that way.

And yes, I air dry my hair unless there is somewhere I have to be and I can't wait for it to dry on its own. It usually takes about 2 to 2 and 1/2 hours to air dry.

Yeah, I did that too last time I grew it out, and that worked well. I really could have gone without cutting it then too, as I actually never felt like it really grew into a horrible mullet, I just wanted to even it out I guess.
I think maybe fine, straight hair is somehow spared from the worst mulleting unless you actually go for the look.
Anyway, I'll soon be finding out!

I am at an awful stage right now (see my siggy pic) and I need lots of little claws or pins or a headband to tame the mess. I hate my mullet but I am not willing to cut anything off.

I wear a tiny pony stub every day and I try to encourage myself that this time will pass and in about half a year I hope to get almost all the hair in a ponytail, this will be my first milestone reached.

I'm still a shortie, or perhaps a Betwixt and Between, but the following pic is way beyond where I was this time last year January (buzz cut on lower length - 2 inches on top).

Right now what you are seeing in my avatar is my current hair length a little above BSL, it took me a year to reach that lenght. When i started to grow my hair it was shoulder length. My target length is waist or tailbone.

Pixna, I lurked for at least a year before I joined so I had already developed the "habit" of pics from the back.

Sqiggyflop, WOW!!

Fluke, you have beautiful hair. Hope you are able to let it grow.

trollkjerring: Hang in there! I feel the same way -- once I can get all of my hair in a pony stub, I'll feel like I've made it through the first milestone. Hang in there with me!

HairyCarrie: Your hair actually looks long to me! Well, you know, not in comparison to the folks here with classic length, but it really does look long! And so thick. And the color is absolutely gorgeous! I agree with Ranchero, it's very inspiring!

Aditi: It looks to me (from your avatar) that you're at waist length already!! You've got beautiful hair!!

Forever Sohpie: My sister had chemo about 2 years ago and is growing her hair back now, too. I hope you are doing well (healthwise)!! Your hair grew in so beautifully! When hers grew back, it was a different texture than before (curlier). Was yours? So, in only about 3 years you were able to grow from zero hair to your current length? If so, I am definitely inspired!!!

HairyCarrie: "Every day my hair is not shorter than the day before." I love that saying -- thank you!!! :D

Forever_Sophie

Oh no, Pixna, '05 was when the 1st pic was taken, the short, flippy cut. It started coming back in late '03. I attribute it to lots of biotin! (Vitamin World Mega Vitamins for the Hair).

The texture is much wavier now! It was more curly to start, but...maybe the length has something to do w/ it? A friend of mine whose treatments ended in '95, her hair came in super curly and is now as straight as ever! I hope that doesn't happen to me. Edit: And thank you so much! I am doing really well. My AML relapsed twice but I've been in remission for 3 years now :)

I haven't had a pixie or super short hair since I was a little girl...but I did cut it at the end of 2004. It was just above the shoulders & now it is somewhere close to tailbone (more than an inch, but less than 3). If I knew how to make a photo collage, I would!

Kittee, your starting hair (in 2003) looks quite a lot like mine currently does. Did you straighten your hair then? You sure got a lot a curls as your hair got long, long, and longer. Thank you SO much for posting these. Hope reigns! :D

I'm from super-short to not-quite-middy right now. Here's a pic that I should probably post in the vintage hair thread! Since the flip was my hot hairdo when I was a teen, I like to wear it that way now and then. Plus it's my hair's favorite position at this Betwixt and Between length...

I don't have any new pictures since I have been AWOL on this site for months! However, in those months (just about a year exactly) my hair has gone from my avatar picture to shoulder length. My longest layers are slightly longer than that and my shorter ones are only about midway down my neck, so I've got a long way to go but it goes much faster than you think! It really helps to be able to put it up. Happy growing!

Nostalgic, glad you are back and posted in this thread! I stayed away from LHC for a few years, and during that time, my hair ended up going from waist-length to pixie!:blueeek::face::blueeek:

It is fantastic to know that you grew to shoulder length in only about a year! That is VERY encouraging indeed! I look forward to seeing your new pics once you have a chance to put them up. Please let me know when you do!
