Yay! My very first french rope braid!

Oh my goodness, I'm so excited, it's just made my day!!!

It needs a little more practice as this is basically my 3rd try after failing miserably, arms ready to fall off. :D

Ooh, so beautiful! I never thought there could be so many variations of the classic French braid till I joined LHC. I haven't worn a French braid in a loooong time but when my hair gets long enough, I will try this one. Thanks for posting and inspiring!

Rope braids are awesome.

I don't know if this will help anyone, but it seems to help me:
Instead of making two strands and twisting them for a length and trying to add bits whilst trying to offer torque...I only twist enough hair for one "bump" of the braid.
For instance:
1. Separate the top into two sections.
2. Twist for 2-3" to the right (one section in each hand), then twist over each other to the left (effectively, switching hands).
3. Now, the hair that's leftover is untwisted yet, so add a little hair from either side...(I use my index finger of each hand to scoop some over, without needing to let go).
4. Twist each piece for 2-3" to the right, then twist over each other to the left.
5. The hair that's leftover is untwisted yet, so add a little hair from either side...
6. Twist for 2-3", then twist over each other.
7. Continue.

This seems to come out a lot neater, and faster for me.

I found great intructions from a link Heavenly Tresses posted in this thread:http://forums.longhaircommunity.com/showthread.php?t=18450 . Here are the instructions I read through convinced I'd master it no matter what!
http://dreamweaverbraiding.com/braids/Twist.htm

I use two pieces of hair an add to them. I thought I saw instructions with 3 pieces of hair and I was like :disgust:. I love the look and my sister said WOW! I love your braid! :D I think I'll go out and try it on her and take a pic.

I ended up rebraiding it 3 times today and every time I did, it got better and better! I love it! I can't wait for it to trail down my back side!

I'm so freakin excited!! I did it!!! :happydance: Thank you all for your kind words!

Thank you again for all the compliments!

I have put together a little tutitorial with pics of my guinea pig if anyone is intrested. :) It's my sister. She's a natural red head. Oh and please don't mind ds. He's a ham and also a future Long Hair! :D

Long hair with very few if not any layers.

http://img111.imageshack.us/img111/2796/11209frenchropebraidsisiz5.jpg (http://imageshack.us)

Start at top with 2 pieces.

http://img82.imageshack.us/img82/4508/11309frenchropebraidsisul7.jpg (http://imageshack.us)

Twist piece on the right to the right and cross over the left piece.

http://img111.imageshack.us/img111/2872/11309frenchropebraidsisaz8.jpg (http://imageshack.us)

Now twist the new right piece to the right.

http://img244.imageshack.us/img244/9242/11309frenchropebraidsisly0.jpg (http://imageshack.us)

Add a piece of hair from the side under the current right piece and twist to the right.

http://img111.imageshack.us/img111/8206/11309frenchropebraidsisab7.jpg (http://imageshack.us)

Cross over the left piece.

http://img244.imageshack.us/img244/9053/11309frenchropebraidsisje5.jpg (http://imageshack.us)

With both pieces of hair in the right hand, grab a piece of hair from the left side and add to the left piece <should be bottom piece> and twist to the right, crossing under the top right piece. You will feed this piece again for the right side piece.

http://img244.imageshack.us/img244/8074/11309frenchropebraidsiswn0.jpg (http://imageshack.us)

Continue on to the nape of the neck and finish off with twisting to the right and crossing over the left until there is no hair left to braid.

It looks great - and so shiny! I must try one. I can rope braid and now french braid, so.... The instructions I have are for a 3-strand french rope, and it looks impossibly difficult! I will be trying the 2-strand rope, methinks. :D

Thanks for the instructions!

I tried it last night, but the twisting is really difficult - my hair wrapped itself around my arm and it wasn't pretty. But I managed several rope twists before I called it a half-up and clamped it with a jaw clip, and it looked pretty cool! I'll be practicing some more.

Oooh nice style, I like this particularly as it avoids having to have a elastic at the top like a standard rope braid. I fear big arm ache will ensue trying to do this!

Addy
January 14th, 2009, 03:13 PM
Oh Teazel, I could see that that could become a problem for me some day. :D

Hair eats arm! :demon:

I would love to see your hair done this way when you get the hang of it but that's totally up to you. ;) If you do post in your album (if you have one) maybe you could give me a heads up. I think it would be gorgeous!

Good luck!
