Ive been reading Tomm's thread about his recent success with hair sticks with great interest, and thought it would be good for the guys on the forum to share photos of their updos.

We get lots of ladies posting pictures, now its your turn to show us ladies how its done.

Don't be shy, I know we have some very long hairs on the LHC!

Unfortunately, I've never tried to do an updo. I'll have to figure out how to do one some day. :ponder:

Two styles for me so far. Tail and no tail.

I'll have to work on it also.

Unfortunately I do not have anyone to help me out with updos, and my own coordination prevents me from doing anything spectacular. But, I've still got a few attempts!

Here is some simple bee-butt bun

Here is a French braid
http://i29.tinypic.com/sdmids.jpg

And finally, a very thin and jagged pair of braids :D

But when it comes down to it, nothing seems quite as nice to me as when it is down and flowing :)

When reading this thread title, I thought the OP wanted to see everyone's updos.

Where I live, "guys" is a gender neutral term that can be directed towards a group of women.:shrug:

Well done, gentlemen! Gylfi, I love the twin braids on you... but seeing your hair down and flowing is fantastic! Tomm, your twist is terrific. Gumball, the Gumbun has me green with envy, that's really, really nice.

I think I've figured out why updos still look manly on a man... it's that nape hair y'all have that gals do not, it shows the wearer to be unmistakably male. The combination of the hair up and those little hairs curling at the neck that is really appealing and masculine.... IMO.

The most common updo I wear is a modified infinity bun, but I don't have a pic of it. But I do have these....

Thanks for the comments! I guess I'll have to practice the double-braids some more so I can wear them out when the day calls for an updo.

Nice buns, Gumball and Les. You've both inspired me to try something I haven't done before..

Kind of a variation on the bee-butt, but with a braid and a stick... which, of course, is a knitting needle because I have no hairsticks, hahaha! I need to work on the "stick" placement, too :o

You guys look so great! I used to style my dads hair. When I need to take action shots of hair goodies, I still use my dad. He loves it. Most times he only wears a pony, but when I get him he wears a french twist...I get it along the whole length of his head...mowhawk twist I call it. :D Thanx for posting!

Great thread, just thought I would add my contribution.

http://mysite.orange.co.uk/myhair/updo1.jpg
This is done from instructions from a magazine and its referred to as a 'nape knot'. I quite like this style and would probably wear this to a formal occasion. Took me a while to get this style.

http://mysite.orange.co.uk/myhair/updo2.jpg
Not really an updo but different from typical 'guy's' long hair style. I have worn this out several times. Its just a simple half up and a barrette.

http://mysite.orange.co.uk/myhair/updo5.jpg
This is a photograph I took today when I had just arrived home, before I started doing all the updos. A simple plait/braid, I only recently got the hang of these, wore this out today as today was quite windy so it stops tangles.

http://mysite.orange.co.uk/myhair/updo3.jpg
A simple bun held with a hairstick.

http://mysite.orange.co.uk/myhair/updo4.jpg
The above bun, nut this time held with a scrunchie.

I tried to have a go at a french twist etc but I couldnt get it to work and all the instruction videos I found are all with shorter hair.

Anyway, hope you ike.

Whea? You don't have nape hair? How do you survive the cold winter months?
No but seriously, doesn't the nape hair get any longer than tangly-irritating-lenght? I hoped that it was my zodiac chain that messed it up and cut it short all the time, but it doesn't seem to get longer, and I havn't wore that chain for over half a year.

On the threads main purpose, I have to say that it's a good initiative. I for one really ought to learn french braiding. I liked the feeling of not having any hair in my face for a day when a friend braided it for me all the way from the forehead back. Got some odd looks from the people at the store though.
And a japanese bun, or what'sitsname. That'd be cool.

I like the lag bolts and sticks and other manly ways of securing the updos! I'd love to see you men try other creative things like that, such as little swords, rods out of an engine block (they might be a little long), drink swizzers, screwdrivers... I have tons of ideas for this! :)

They aren't bad. They are heavier than any of my purpose-built hairtoys, but they don't pull or cause me any problems. I've worn 'em all day long and the weight never bothered me.

But I have curly nape hairs, too... Hopefully the hips keep me from looking manly.

Great updos--I think men look manly in updos, I mean they're men right?

I have two long haired men myself (husband and son) and I'd love to get them to wear updos. Both claim that they make their hair/head hurt. Now, I've been wearing updos since the beginning of time, so I don't remember, but how long before you get used to updos?

Gumball
March 28th, 2008, 11:21 AM
I think it depends on the updo and how it's done. Figure eights took some time before they really stopped pulling. Took a little refining and it still sometimes requires a redo. Braids, so long as they aren't tight but snug, feel great. Could it be that's their anti-updo excuse? Maybe. Maybe they just haven't experienced one that works great for them. A little experimenting shouldn't hurt too much, pun not intended. :) Of course I'm wearing a rope braid right now and that's not really an updo unless I pin it into a bun.

I have considered the excuse angle, that's partly why I wanted manly input. My husband wears a ponytail, and it took him a week or so to get used to it. The biggest problem is my son. He has waist length 3a/3b hair and it gets crazy. Basketball was a nightmare. Tennis is easier, but we still need to train him to wear it up, to help with tangles and keep it out of his eyes. He did tell me this morning he's thinking he'll need to wear a pony for tennis--now, why didn't I think of that?!

Gumball
March 28th, 2008, 11:36 AM
Hehe. That'll work. I didn't start tying my hair back until it got to a certain length and since I've started I haven't wanted to go back. The sheer amount of tangles I've likely fought off with putting it up is wonderful.

Thanks. The agreement is that as long as he takes care of it, he can wear it long. I can't let him have a blue mohawk or anthing (I wouldn't care, but his school won't allow it--I'm surprised we get away with the waist length!), but I want him to make his own choices. Besides my hair is pretty long, as is his dad's, so we'd be a bit hypocritical if we make him keep his short!

Not the most flattering picture, but here's my most typical style. 2 braids. I can't seem to get buns to agree with the weight any more. I manage to secure the sticks right and I end up with a headache or the weight of the bun starts pulling the hair sticks down my head over the next hour or so. Not so comfy either. Figure 8's and infinity buns no longer work.

I've got a tiny picture of DH and me both wearing braids from last summer. His was French braid and mine was vertical braids. His hair is much nicer for braiding, mine is slippery and difficult to handle. I sometimes do all sorts of buns on his hair but I don't have any pictures of them.

I was wondering whether to participate in this thread, as I don't like updos - on men or women - and only ever wear a ponytail or braid myself. I do admire the skill of anybody who can do updos, however, and good luck to all the other guys who are updo fans.

You don't need powertools. I bought some enormous bolts at the hardware store (10 cents each - can't beat the price!) and used sandpaper to smooth the jagged bits down by hand. A cheap and fast way to get sturdy metal sticks.

[ETA: It was sandpaper meant for sanding metal. It's important to get the right kind.]
