View Full Version : Tell me what this bun is called?

I'm sure somebody else has done this and it's already named and well known. Tell me what it is? I've been doing it lately and it's great.

It's a knot, but not pulled all the way through.

I gather my hair where I want my bun to be. I've tried this high and low and it seems to work great both ways. Holding it like a pony with my left hand, I take the length and wrap it CCW up and over my left hand, then between my left arm and my head so the length hangs down like a pony again (but shorter because of the wrapping). Let go of the length now because your R arm is in an awkward place. Grab the length again with your R hand from the R side.

You now have a loop around your L fingers and are holding the length in your R hand. I grab the length between my LEFT index and middle fingers and pull it part way through the loop. I don't pull it all the way, just a couple of inches, and that makes a second loop. So now I have two loops, with some ends dangling from where I didn't pull all the way through (you can do more or less ends by pulling through more or less, or wrap the ends around the whole thing depending on your length).

I have secured this with a stick or fork in numerous ways... I usually take that second loop I make and twist it once, then run a stick through the center of that loop through to the center of the other loop.

Phew. I hope that makes sense. Haven't had a chance to photo this 'do yet.

If I am following your directions correctly, I believe you are doing a celtic knot.

I think I know what you're talking about, and I do this bun sometimes, too (when I can get it to hold), though my hair is still an inch or two short to do it properly. Sounds like a variation of this one: http://forums.longhaircommunity.com/vbjournal.php?do=article&articleid=29

ETA: Oops, maybe I don't do this one. Somehow I didn't see the part about the two loops.

The variation of that one can be found here (http://forums.longhaircommunity.com/vbjournal.php?do=article&articleid=32). The only difference is the direction in which the wrap is made.

Is THIS (http://100-hairstyles.freidenkerin.de/index.php?/archives/25-19-Celtic-Bun-Keltischer-Knoten.html) basically it?

Sounds like an overhand knot with a draw loop, which Cinnamon Hair calles a "Celtic knot," and it seems to be the most common form of the celtic knot around here.

(For comparison, the KarenLynn knot is a figure 8 knot, with the length pulled through.)

http://classiclength.googlepages.com/videos.html Yeah, it's a Celtic Knot. I do it all the time! (In fact, I was redoing my Celtic Knot when I ran across this thread!)

That sounds like what I've been calling a Celtic Knot, too. Nice and comfy, now that I can actually do it without having it fall out! :)
