I'm sure somebody else has done this and it's already named and well known. Tell me what it is? I've been doing it lately and it's great.
It's a knot, but not pulled all the way through.
I gather my hair where I want my bun to be. I've tried this high and low and it seems to work great both ways. Holding it like a pony with my left hand, I take the length and wrap it CCW up and over my left hand, then between my left arm and my head so the length hangs down like a pony again (but shorter because of the wrapping). Let go of the length now because your R arm is in an awkward place. Grab the length again with your R hand from the R side.
You now have a loop around your L fingers and are holding the length in your R hand. I grab the length between my LEFT index and middle fingers and pull it part way through the loop. I don't pull it all the way, just a couple of inches, and that makes a second loop. So now I have two loops, with some ends dangling from where I didn't pull all the way through (you can do more or less ends by pulling through more or less, or wrap the ends around the whole thing depending on your length).
I have secured this with a stick or fork in numerous ways... I usually take that second loop I make and twist it once, then run a stick through the center of that loop through to the center of the other loop.
Phew. I hope that makes sense. Haven't had a chance to photo this 'do yet.
