Maintaining horn combs?

I bought a couple of horn combs off of EBay a while back, but I think I may have damaged one of them by cleaning it too frequently/vigorously.

How should you properly maintain and clean these combs?

I pull a towel between the prongs. Oiling with lanolin is recommended perodically, perhaps more often if the comb is used on wet hair, and maybe once a year if the comb never gets wet.

I oil mine with jojoba, usually... sometimes evoo.
