In the UK at Christmas I watched a TV production of Anna Karenina starring Sophie Marceau, and loved the leading lady's hair (I mean, her acting was great too, but I'm an LHCer :D ) . Does anyone know any good instructions for reproducing these 'dos?
They look exactly like the oil painting on my old Penguin Anna Karenina (http://www.bookdepository.co.uk/RESOURCE/MEDIA/IMAGES/bookcovers/Original/BookCovers13/978/0/1/9/9/9780199536061.jpg), and I don't think I've seen anything like it on Frazzled Frau or other vintage sites.
Here are some clips from the film (http://video.google.com/videosearch?q=%22anna+karenina%22+%22sophie+marcea u%22&ie=utf-8&oe=utf-8&rls=org.mozilla:en-US:official&client=firefox-a&um=1&sa=X&oi=video_result_group&resnum=5&ct=title#) (the waltz scene is wonderful, for anyone having as grey a day as me).

I haven't been able to find a still of a particular style from a party in a conservatory, which showed her without a hat and with a braid over her head, like a headband or tiara (set quite far back for that though) – maybe vaguely referencing one of those traditional Russian headdresses.

Any clues? I have a feeling I'd need a hair piece to do this justice.

I'm finding a few stills and sketches of Victorian era hairstyles, but few How-to's. Try these links:

This is more of a braiding how-to page, but with some tweaking these braids could easily be transformed into mre formal up-do's.

Hope these help a bit :D

Thought that this might also be worth a try, although you need a 'library card' to get in to the articles.

Aha! Thank you Shadow :flowers:

I just found these instructions too, which are quite explicit (http://www.shootingstarhistory.com/library/hairstyles2.html), and very useful.
