View Full Version : Show Me Your Barrettes!

I can't - surely - be the only person who likes barrettes. Because I tend to wear buns relatively low on my head (so in winter it bangs annoyingly against my coat/hood) and because any bread I make will look unbelievably scruffy about 10 minutes after being put inside a coat, I tend to use barrettes a lot in winter - a pony tail can be much more easily neatened up than a braid - and even in summer, either holding up a bun or for a tails-up, which is actually cooler than a bun (less hair next to the head).

I spent many years using either a plastic tortoise-backed French clip or one of those slider things, but the last couple of years I've been collecting more interesting ones - a Graydog or two, some cameo and other stuff from celestialwave on eBay and etsy, a couple from the Barrette Baron, a Lalo Orna, etc.

I'd be interested in seeing what other people like in this line. I'll start with a pic of a Graydog I recently got from Peggy.

I like barrettes, but I like the smaller metal ones. The one you're wearing is very pretty.

I have no camera, but had a brain storm to use soft suede cloth to line the clasp. A single strip straight across, and tacked in with some coat thread. No breakage. (I saw a tutorial of this, only using felt). Actually I was thinking deer skin, but don't want to offend any of us.
I have some pewter, some france luxe, some lovely abalone inlays, and a silver one with turquiose stones from Arizona.
Looking forward to seeing others collections.

I like that barrette too- looks really good against the pretty silver hair it's holding on to.

I love barettes but they do need to be on the bigger side to work for me. I do usually lose a hair or three, especially if they are hinged barettes. Never stops me, really. I love the pretty pretty barettes!

I like barrettes for half-ups and full ponytails, too. I think they look more polished than a scrunchy or just a plain elastic and I like the wider look they give to the ponytail. Also, in winter it feels a little less naked than a bun - that bit of hair keeps the back of my neck warmer.

I have a couple of France Luxe, some from JaffaHair, some really nice sparkly ones from Butler & Wilson (one's in my sig pic) and a handful of Graydogs.

I can't get on with slides at all. Until I came to LHC I didn't know the word "barrette" and thought that was what was meant by the word "hairslide".

The half-ups look great, Tabitha!

I've never had a barrette big enough to hold my hair in a ponytail. I like the look, though. Any other suggestions for big barrettes? (My hair is about 4.25" circumference.)

Tabitha
December 30th, 2008, 03:18 PM
Thank you, Darkwaves!

France Luxe do some specially for thick hair that they call "Volume" barrettes. FL cost a bit more than drugstore brands but as well as being pretty, their clips are excellent quality and don't snag hair at all. I had a Ficcare barrette recently that was TOO big for my 4" ponytail and I had to return it! and Graydog do barrettes of different sizes too, up to XL. Cut-out designs hold more hair because the hair kind of pouffs through the cutouts.

I am a barrette lover too. I think they look neat and tidy in my birds nest and as my braids are less than perfect they are ideal for making me look a little bit more pulled together. The only snag I have found with them is that because my hair is so fine (and maybe soft) they slip right out of it, so I am limited to light weight ones or ones that are made specifically for my hair type.

I like slide barrettes like my golden dragonfly... but I can't seem to find one that could hold all my hair, and my hair's gotten too long for half-ups on most occasions.

wendyg
December 30th, 2008, 03:47 PM
"wider look" - yes, that's another thing I do like about barrettes. Fine hair really packs down. In an elastic I'd have like a pencil hanging back there.

darkwaves: try the Barrette Baron (www.barrettebaron.com) - he does XL barrettes that are quite capacious.

I LOVE barrettes. I'm a barrette addict. Tabitha, where did you get that purple barrette in your first photo??? I LOVE IT!!! It'd go great with my outfit I wore at Christmas ;)

I use spring load barrettes, but also the kind that are slide metal ones? I find the snag less in my hair. I've growing out the majority of my bangs, so I use them to clip those back. I also use those little snap clip barrettes, but they don't always hold my hair up.

Barrette Baron...I'm scared to ask because I LOVE shopping for hair toys.....

I have a lot of barrettes that are mostly of the drug store variety. :o I'll be looking for more "hair friendly" designs since I've had more than one of the spring-type, grab onto a few hairs and won't come out -ouch! I do have some French barrettes that seem to be of better construction but they are definitely not as pretty as Wendy's.

I use the large barrettes for mostly for folded braids. I find that if I take the moveable "center" out of the spring-type barrettes, they are able to accommodate more hair and still be secure. When I wear my hair down, I sometimes use the smaller barrettes for half up styles.

I almost never use any barrettes. They slide down my slippery hair and most can't hold all my hair anyway. Sometimes I envy those of you with fine non-slippery hair, your hairtoy options are limitless. :) I leave my hair down a lot in winter, sometimes tucked into the coat. Keeps me warm without additional hats. :) If I wear it up I use Ficcares, I can still put hats or hood on easily with those.

I do have a few nice barrettes, mostly reserved for half-ups in warmer days.

I love barrettes, but have not found any large enough to use for a ponytail in my hair. I tend to use them as decorative only. My favorites are my 1928 brand ones, which are a costume jewelry brand that's made to look like vintage jewelry. I have a bunch of pics of my collection in my hairtoys album. Unfortunately, they are poor quality pics. I have some more 1928 barrettes coming in the mail soon from Ebay. I can hardly wait!

I've got a zillion barrettes! (Only half-kidding.) To those who consider them damaging, I haven't had issues if I carefully remove them rather than yanking them out.

I sometimes wear a barrette either above or below a bun, depending on the position, to add some interest and get more use out of my collection. I have also fastened small, beautiful barrettes in the center of a bun. I think it looks pretty!

What a pretty collection you have, Mely!

I was just looking at those this morning--it is unusual the way they have those little depressions drilled in the barrettes, exposing the colours underneath. I wonder it you could engrave designs, instead of just the depressions.

The one that's second from the bottom in the second row is definitely a St. Justin's design! I have the same one, which I bought from the British Museum giftshop last spring. The others above it (not the top one, though), also look like they're made by that company.

I have another design by them -- Celtic, but swirly. I will post.

These only hold half-ups for me, though.

(Thanks, Tabitha, for the suggestion of FL volume barrette. I think your hair must be close in thickness to mine, so I will try.)

Since Mr Barron is far too polite to toot his own horn (which in any case might annoy the mods), here's two recent acquisitions from him. The parallellogram is satine with an ebony stripe; the other one is indigo royalwood and holly bordered with fuchsia dymondwood. Both are his size large, which is smaller than a lot of people's large.

I have a lot of barrettes, and hope to post a picture of them soon. I like to use them to pull back part of my hair, and I sometimes use them for ponytails, but usually the french kind won't hold all my hair. I love the look of the kind with sticks through them, like most of Unicorn's collection, but they often slide down my hair. So then I sometimes use them to hide an elastic band.

Sometimes you can find some at drug stores. I have about the same circumference (not nearly as curly though) and I can get all of my hair into one. I was really lucky to find two Goody barrettes at Fred Meyer or Target, I don't remember. One of them Mely has a pic of, it is on the far right second one down.

Goody has been making some of their barrettes with clear rubber/plastic over the metal to help hold and reduce damage.

Ooooohhhhh! That Graydog looks FANTASTIC in your hair!! So glad you put that pic up, fun to see the toys being enjoyed and appreciated.

I do use barrettes - obviously, I'm always putting them up on the swap board. I have a couple of hair styles I love that really do thrive best with barrettes and I still find that the absolutely easiest and quickest "grab it and run" hair accessory is the barrette.

There have been a couple of times when I've managed to get my hair tangled in the "dreaded French clasp" - but nowhere near as often as with any of the ficcares I've ever had and never have I not been able to get the hair loosened, rather than ripped out.

I guess I've been lucky, or I've been using them in a manner in which the opportunity for entanglement is not that great. Also, the nature of my hair is such to make this more of a rarity - thin, wavy, yet surprisingly substantial, thanks to all those silvers/whites and grays!

I'm far more likely to get a "C" clasp stuck - and have done so, once hopelessly and the clasp had to be sacrificed for sake of the huge wad of hair which it encased. :o(

There are as many pluses and negatives for every sort of accessory out there as there are people using them. That's why there are so many different styles, types and methods of using them - we're all different, we all look for different things from our toys.

It's nice to hear the experiences of others, but I wouldn't throw away all my items with a certain detail that caused problems for someone. I'd just take the warning and be careful when using it - and so it is for me with the french clasp barrettes. They are workhorses and I'm keepin' 'em!

I also love barrettes. I have a Barraeis (sp?) wooden one and a silver feather barrette that are amazing. Most of my barrettes, though, are sparkly and from a dollar store. I tend to wear those more in the summer because they are flowers and butterflies and such.

I'll have to go find some pictures. I love that Graydog barrette.

I don't have a lot of barrettes. For some reason, I seem to be concentrating on antique and vintage hair combs.

But I DO love anything that so much as hints at art deco which is why I've got to know:

I have been tempted to go to a resale shop and get a leather belt and make a barrette. A leather shop could make the holes for a stick. You could even paint on the leather.

I remember a French barrette I had as a teen, black with colorful metallic paint splatters all over it. I still have it, even though it's in pieces.

Show us your favorite French barrettes, tell us a bit about them (where you got them), and maybe show them in action, if you want (not obligatory).

Since I stopped posting pictures, it's harder for me to share things... but, anyway...

Let's go! :D

I have a beautiful midsize black barrette with black stones in it. I love it, but it's been missing for several weeks now, which makes me very sad.

Ow, I hope you find it!!! I'm so sorry. I don't know what I would do without my favorite hairfork (I use mostly hairforks right now). :o

I seem to have a knack for losing my barrettes, which is saddening because it's pretty rare for me to find hair things I actually like. I've misplaced my abalone one, too, which I got in Costa Rica. I'm sure it's around somewhere - I just don't know where.

I've got one with some racehorses on it that broke - it's an easy fix, I just haven't gotten around to it. That one's pretty cool. It's an antique silver/platinum color, with an old English style racing scene depicted on the center piece.

Sounds lovely! :D Too bad it broke, and you lost the other one.

I have a number of barrettes in all sizes from PINSwithPERSONALITY (https://www.etsy.com/shop/PINSwithPERSONALITY?ref=search_shop_redirect)
They are beautiful (even after years of use), and are very comfy with no hair snags.

France Luxe Classics (https://www.franceluxe.com/Barrettes_c_1491.html) are also very nice; I have a few in enamel.

I got this one in a swap from Hele but I can't remember who made it.

It reminds me of some I have from ernestefforts on Etsy https://www.etsy.com/listing/198102773/tiny-wood-hair-clip-spalted-maple-wood?ref=shop_review

And I also have some pretty clips from 1928 Jewelry (https://www.amazon.com/gp/search/ref=sr_qz_back?sf=qz&rh=i%3Afashion-womens%2Cn%3A7147440011%2Ck%3A1928+jewelry+barrett es&keywords=1928+jewelry+barrettes&unfiltered=1&ie=UTF8&qid=1498797278) on Amazon.

I think that's all I have in French clips :hmm:

I used to wear French barrettes, but years ago I realized that they were causing hair breakage for me, so I stopped. Maybe others can wear them without damage, but not me.

I like the way they look and hold though, so I do miss them.

I have found that French barrettes cause less damage when used as the base for pinless braided buns.

I have a handful of them. Here is what I've worn so far in WEO.

That is a great look, but I didn't realize that's how you did it!
I must try it with some larger wood barrettes I have.
They would be perfect...I just hope I have enough braid length

I love French barrettes! But I only have 2, and they are too small to fit all my hair in. One I have had forever, the other I got in a swap. I've been eyeing MapleBurls barrettes for a looooong time.

The smaller clips I use for half ups, or as a decoration when I do a topsy tail.

I love your style with the barrettes neko_kawaii, beautiful!

I'll be watching this thread since I will be needing new barrettes as my hair grows back out. I used to have a couple that I really liked, but they were broken years ago.
