I just moved up from M to L. Stuffing my hair into the M was starting to cause breakage. The L is a little bit big but works. So, um, no medium for you, certainly!

Yeah M probably would be just a slightly too small, unless worn as two buns :)

I ordered the FOTM yesterday too. I'm a cruise lover so I'll wear it a lot. I wear my freedom flexi a lot. I just wear whichever one I feel like wearing. I wear t-shirts and jeans to work so matching doesn't matter.

I'm a lefty and now with every order I place from LR, I reply to the order comfirmation email and request a lefty version. Only two of the five I have now are left versions (one doesn't matter, center design doesn't have a real up or down side) but the two on the bottom of the pic below can't be flipped and I have to struggle to get them inserted good enough to hold.

...And I still can't find my Tidepool Treasures flexi. It's not like me to lose something like that :( noooooooo :(

In Finland it is: if the order + shipping cost is more than 22 euros , you need to pay 24 % customs :( Two yeas ago it was 45 euros maximum, but they lowered the limit  And for me 24% is kinda a lot of taxes.

Stella, pm me. Ship them to me and I'll ship them to you.

Is it really that hard for a left-handed person to put a flexi in right-handed? I'm right-handed and I have no problems at all putting one in left-handed. I can put my hair up in a flexi using only my left hand if I need to... (I was playing around after one of those "help I broke my right arm and I'm right handed how do I put my hair up? threads)

(Of course, I can completely understand wanting a left-handed one. I just hadn't realised it could be that difficult doing things the other way around)

You are simply too kind for your own good Quasi ! :flower: I think I will order first time only one flexi to see if 1. size is good on me 2. if I will actually like to wear it. Oh and the 3. It seems like this month is full of the money spending. Need to buy a present for my sister ( she wants a petticoat to go with her pin up skirts and dresses ) and my HB's brother's wife is expecting a child and there is the baby shower withing net 2-3 weeks :) And looks like one flexi will be just withing the non customs limit (hopefully euro don't drop much compared to dollars hehe ).

What a life... I NEED to be interested in politics and economics because they affect the currency :laugh:

Kaydana it's not too difficult to use a flexi right handed but what I have to do is switch hands that are holding my hair in place in order to use the flexi with my right hand. My prob seems to be that the pin rolls a little on me and since I already moved my hands to switch, the bun is less stable (or neat!). I'm also a lefty that does everything but write and bat (baseball) right handed so I'm pretty dexterous with my right hand.

You are doomed, rags.

This FOTM makes me think of a game we play in the southwest of England, where I'm from. It's quite fun. It's called.... Pirate or farmer?
One person says 'Arrrrrr' and everyone else has to guess whether they are a pirate or a farmer.
There's not a lot of structure to the game, but it's quite fun! It gets rather complicated e.g. angry farmer sounds quite like a pirate; happy just-did-some-looting pirate sounds quite like a farmer.

Anyway, ahoy tharr me hearties, my FOTM is sailing across the ocean right now! And tharr be action shots, haharrrr

Absolutely, you deserve it! And I mean, 20 or 30 bucks isn't going to buy you a new computer, glasses, or pay your medical bills. But it can buy just a little bit of happiness ... and it's so worth it. (how's that for a philosophical enabling?)

I just rolled up $72 worth of coins that were cluttering my counter. Had to raid the cup-holders in the truck to finish the dimes and quarters off, but I made it  So I ordered some copper rose u-pins and a small flexi for a friend as well the FOTM for me :)

I think I will order the sailor one as a first one, and if it is too big then make a nautical coloured paranda for real , and bulk the bun up :)

The large for me can only be used through the centre of nautilus buns etc it's even really tight over a logroll and I'm only hip length just under 4" your hair is way longer than mine so hopefully you should be ok, guess I'll just have to put them back in the drawer again.

My ponytail measures only 8 cm (3,14 inches ?), so that is what confuses me with the size choice. My buns really are not big for my tailbone length... heh, just take a chance and see what happends ;)

that's what I meant in my post above. Our thickness is similar, but your hair is longer, therefor your buns would be bigger than mine (only on the lhc can you say this to someone). If *I* need an xl with shorter (but similar diameter of hair) then it should work for you as well.

Bust as you say, take a chance. If it doesn't work, I don't think you'll have a problem re-homing it :)

This is an L, I have 3.25" circumference on a "big" day... yeah, there's growing room but this updo passes the headbang test. Your hair would laugh at this size!

I would suggest waiting until you can do a centre-held bun like LWB or nautilus, Hibernis. I can't do cinnabuns/twists very easily with flexis, but they are so great for centre-helds.

However, if you're a very thick-haired iii, that's going to be a long time coming, and you would probably need an XL by then. But I wouldn't say flexis are bad for iiis. Look at KittyBird for example.

ETA- there is definitely a learning curve, by the way. Or there was for me.

Hmm. I may exchange the rose one for an XL and wait, if I can find it in that size. Put it in the case my shears are in just in case I'm ever tempted.

Thanks for the input.

Any advice on sizing?

Up until waist, a L was fine for a peacock twist and a lazy wrap bun. For a cinnabun, I need an XL. I also have iii hair.

I finally decided that I needed some flexis in my life. I went with these three, all size L:

Flitter (https://www.lillarose.biz/assets/lr/products/detail/3-2304.jpg)

Tidepool Treasures (https://www.lillarose.biz/assets/lr/products/detail/3-2285.jpg)

Blossom Drops (https://secure.lillarose.biz/products/detail/3-1970.jpg)

Super excited for my new hairtoys! I'm especially excited for the last one. I love fancy hairtoys.

This is an L, I have 3.25" circumference on a "big" day... yeah, there's growing room but this updo passes the headbang test. Your hair would laugh at this size!
http://i1201.photobucket.com/albums/bb359/wheels_two/flexi_l_zps106a399b.jpg

hahaha you made me laugh :D My hair might agree with you ;)

that's what I meant in my post above.

I guess it is the madness of the LHC, where you just can't believe that XL size would actually be not too big ;) And yeah about your and my bun sizes we could talk only here ;)

Got my Anchors Aweigh in XL today. I've been sailing since I was 11, so as soon as I saw this flexi I knew I HAD to have it. Not the best shot (hair needs a wash, the humidity fuzzed me up, and my mom doesn't understand my phone's camera), but I am SO pleased with this lil guy. I think it's my favourite flexi of them all!

I got my flexis yesterday!

And they are beautiful!

But...I don't know. I'm glad I didn't go with the medium, but large doesn't really seem...right. It seems kind of like a tight fit. I have an extremely hard time doing an LWB with mine- maybe it's just a learning curve thing?

I have a really hard time getting the beaded part over the stick to make it work. I have to struggle to get it on there.

It's too small. Either use them for centre held buns (and don't try to grab all the hair in the middle) or send them back and get the XL instead.

Flexi-8 and Lilla Rose are now officially merged - the old flexi8 site now redirects you to Lilla Rose.

I'm kinda irked though, because apparently they are no longer doing any custom stuff, not even changing centerpieces! (Although they'll still do lefty centerpieces, which strikes me as odd, considering changing the centerpiece and changing the direction of the centerpiece would logically require the exact same amount of extra work...)

I think this is going to be the straw that pushes me over onto just making my own Fauxi-8s. I really liked before that Flexi would let you swap out a centerpiece if there was one you liked on beading you didn't like, or vice versa. Now it just feels like their selection is more limited than ever...

2 ways. Firstly, I emailed about a custom and they said they don't do it.
Then, when they changed the flexi-8 website to redirect to lilla rose, there's also a wee blurb that says: "Can you customize your products for me?
At this time custom orders are not being accepted. This includes switching of centerpieces. We are working on a newer, better way to accommodate all of your ideas. We have no estimation for when this might be ready."

Yup, I just bought the tree of life in gold and shipping to continental Europe was $6.95. I've ordered from them several times and found their shipping to be very reliable and generally quite quick too.

They do put the full value of the contents on the label, so you'll want to be careful not to order so many that you go over your country's customs limit.

I didn't know about flexis till I joined this forum....but....I was at dinner with some friends last night (whom I have known for over 5 years) and the wife of the couple turned her head in discussion and flashed a medium flexi! Holy cow, that was a fun coincidence :-)

I just have not been able to make my flexis work for me, so I decided to sell them. Unfortunately I can not find the name or price of the XL in this pic. Anyone know? And I am assuming it was just a $21 one, but any help there too would be appreciated. Once I know and can figure out shipping prices I will go to the swap board to sell. (Not trying to break any rules here!) thanks for your help. http://i36.photobucket.com/albums/e20/rushli/5e7fdcc9c1937b4a26e3e657cbf45eb1_zpsa97b9ae7.jpg

Got my first mega flexi today - wow, they really are a lot bigger than the XL. I think the perfect size for me would be in-between XL and Mega! The XL is getting tight around my cinnabuns but the mega is a bit big. It's pretty though and has lots of growing room.

^^Festive Leaf is my favorite Flexi....you need one too! :D

i finally got around to getting a Purple Cluster, i'm super stoked over it!

and here's my little XL Flexi family. I never realized that the pin of the Flitter goes in the opposite direction of the other Flexis until i took this picture (and why are Flexis so danged hard to get decent pictures of?)....

Hele, I think all flexis are 'right handed' unless you managed to get a custom before they stopped doing that. All your flexis, except the flitter, are symmetrical, so you can wear them 'upside down'. Something for lefties to keep in mind, until they start doing customs again.

That purple cluster looks gorgeous.

Stellaaa - they still do lefty flexis, just not any other changes (which is part of why it seems so odd to me - surely it takes the same amount of work to make a lefty as it does to change a centerpiece?)

Ooh, I've been watching that one for a while too! If your hair has a golden tone in it, I bet it'll be stunning! And I'm wondering what those Flexi Ohs are too. To me it looks like it's a normal flexi8, but one you can bend completely. Look at this picture: http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-Ts2InreZvpw/U1Vi6lJpksI/AAAAAAAALb8/tOb1iwgXvOY/s1600/DSC_0018.jpg

Hmm, well I mentioned in my email that I wasn't sure if they still did them or not, but I recall seeing one on this thread just about 2 months ago. So, again, doesn't hurt to ask.

Plus I'm not exactly asking for a custom... just something they already offer as a large in an extra large. If they don't want to, I'll just get the other one.

So can anyone tell me how much bigger the mega is over the xl? I seem to remember someone saying it is much larger in step size than the difference between say medium and large. I don't have a mega, but the ones I've seen around here look HUGE. I had a large that I traded away because it was too small for most styles. And the XL is great for me. I even have a little extra room, it's not really tight.

KittyBird

It would help to know how long and thick your hair is, marjosc2. I think XL would be good for you, because there's a big size difference between L and XL. The XXL is huge, so if you've been using L up until now, the XXL would probably be too big. :)
I have a picture showing some of the sizes, maybe it'll help.

I also have a size question about the mega. I will finally get some money and I'm I'm love with the Dreamcatcher mega! My pony circumference is 4+ inches (4.25 I think) and I am in the abyss between tailbone and classic. I would use it for a top bun with every single strand contained. Currently the XL is really tight and I have to take to outermost layer of a bun and really squeeze my hair into it. Still, I'm worried that the mega might be too large, from KittyBird's pics it doesn't look that huge, but I have seen photos where people have used their upper tight as a background and it is about the same width! Maybe I just have huge tights :o

What's your bun diameter? The mega has a functional length of 4.25 - 4.75 inches. It fits perfectly for my cinnabuns and my hair is both thinner and shorter than yours.

Alright, semi dirty hair is about 11,5 cm in diameter. Which equals to approximately 4.5 inches. I think cleaner hair would be wider, so it might be a bit loose but better that than the super snug fit on my XL. I would think at least.

I have a 4 inch circumference and my hair is somewhere around 42 inches long. I can comfortably use an XL for center-held buns, but they occasionally feel too snug. I have one Mega and I can use in center-helds as well. While it feels loose-ish and less secure than my XLs, it is totally secure.

Hm, so if I wanted to get Flexis, what size might I want? My ponytail circ is 3.7", and I think my bun diameter is around 4 inches or so, sometimes closer to 3.5". I think I want one for half-ups and one for actual buns. I definitely know I'll stick to the golden ones, because silver makes my hair look weird.

4.25 here as well! :silly: I'm almost TBL (within an inch) and I use a L (LWB) and XL for other updos. A mega doesn't fit yet, not IMO. It fits technically, but it will sag right out.

Probably XS or S for half ups, and XL for buns.

Does Flexi ever have a bigger discounts ?

On the old site they used to do free shipping occasionally, even for international orders. And there was a code you could enter to get a 10% discount. The code apparently doesn't work on the new site and I don't know whether they'll be repeating the fee shipping thing there. We'll have to wait and see...

I'm considering getting a flexi when I have the funds, and I've been trying to figure out what sizes would be best for a while. My ponytail circumference and bun diameter are both about 5". From reading the recent sizing discussion, I'm guessing that I'd use either XL or XXL for buns and either S or M for half-ups, but it's difficult to tell which in each case from pictures. Can someone with actual flexi experience help to figure this out?

While I have actual flexi experience, I have none whatever of hair as thick as yours! :D But here goes, for whatever it's worth:

I'd say that for full buns an XL would work for you in centre-held styles at the very least. I've never seen a Mega in person so I won't comment about that, but if weight is an issue for you with hair toys, do note that even the XLs weigh 35-45g. (I just weighed a few of mine on my letter scale. The pin alone is 25g and the 8 adds anything up to 20g to that, depending on the size of the centre and the size and material of the beads.) The Mega will be correspondingly heavier as the pin is significantly longer and the larger 8 implies more beads.

For half-ups... check the circumference of the section of hair that you want to get into the clip. My entire circ is 3" and I can use both S and M for ponytails. S is a snug fit, but the M too holds well enough for most purposes.

That mega looks fantastic in your hair!

I am thinking about getting my first flexi 8 and I am really unsure if I need the XL or the mega. I'd prefer the smaller XL if I can pull it off...

Thank you. :blossom:

Regarding your question -- It depends on how long your hair is... Mine is heading towards hip and is quite thick and I still use an XL for most buns (e.g. LWB) - the mega works for braided buns which I wasn't able to do with an XL. So it also depends on what kinds of buns you want to do. I think an XL is still the most functional size.

Sorry that was a bit of a ramble - hope it helps a bit!

Looking at stats, I have a similar hair type. Yours may be longer though. I'm almost to hip. An XL is great for me. I'm expecting on in the mail today in fact. I'll take pics.

Thank you so much! I did think that an XL might work for center-held buns, but I wasn't sure about other bun types. For instance, my cinnabun is a little larger than 5" in diameter (completely hides 5" hairsticks). From reading the sizing discussion, I wonder if an XL will work at all with it. Also, my hair is right at TBL and plan to grow to at least classic, if not knee, so my buns will only get bigger. I may just need a mega.

Weight's never been an issue for me, but thanks for the heads-up and the measurements! If I ever get a mega, I might have to find a mass scale out of curiosity. It sounds like my estimate of an S or M for half-ups is pretty accurate, as the clips that work best for my half-ups are generally made to be used for ponytails. I will check circumferences to figure out which.

Thanks again! You've been really helpful.

An XL won't work for a 5" cinnabun, it'll be too small. There are plenty of buns it would work for, but not a cinnabun. If you want to do cinnabuns you'll need a mega.

Perhaps we (I'm volunteering, I'd just need someone with a medium flexi and a ruler to take some measurements for me) need to compile a flexi-8 sizing guide for buns? Pity the articles section doesn't work, not sure where it would be best to put it. Would it be best as a blog post or a thread? I don't think it'd work as part of this thread because no one would ever be able to find it...

The difference between a mega and an XL is HUGE. They need an inbetween catagory, like a mini mega.

I've got XLs - the way I wear them is through a braided nautilus. This is a great style for me. It holds like a rock and doesnt need any additional pins. I can use the XL on the first "round" of my cinnabun, so it's held from the center and the rest wrapped around the flexi, but I will end up redoing it a few times during the day.

I have tried a mega at a meet. I could get all of my cinnabun into it, but it still felt quite big compared to the XL. I've held off getting one as a) I can't spend that much money b) I can never make up my mind as to which one I get when I do have some spare cash and c) tend to wear a bun held up with sticks nowadays instead of a cinnabun.

The other thing with the sticks of the flexis is that you need some stick left over to fix it properly. Also it curves ever so slightly, so these things can make the stick part feel shorter.

Another reason why I think I prefer XLs to Megas is the design. The bigger the flexi, the smaller the center looks and the emphasis is more on the beads. Ideally, there would be bigger centers for the bigger flexis to stop them looking so small.

Heh. I'm the opposite way around! I don't pay that much attention to the Megas because I'm pretty sure I'll never be able to wear one, but I've never thought the XL centres looked too small. But I do think that quite a few of them look disproportionately big on the smaller sizes. The Medium is the smallest size for which most of them still work in my opinion; from small on down I quite often don't like the look because there's so much centre and not enough loop!

Totally agree. I've managed to hack mine. I've found large discs with a hook at the back and dangly bits in indian jewelery shops. They are usually either attached to hair or used as buttons. I've hung the hook over the center resulting in a flexi with a huge middle. My profile pic on my member page has an example taken at one of the meets.

Hele is it me or do the XLs seem bigger than before? The stick is the same, but the 8 seems bigger (wider?). I compared my new one to my older, silver-toned Tree of Life and the ToL seems smaller. I'll take a side-by-side when I have some time. Not complaining, I like it.

Also, the gold open flower is much much prettier in person than on the site if anyone was on the fence about it.

i really want that gold open flower flexi now! It seems like they always end up looking better in action shots than they do in the shop. Okay, i had to run and compare my XL Flexis. My oldest one (an October 2013 FOTM) is the exact same size as the current FOTM, as are all my other ones...with the exception of the Purple Cluster i recently got, the 8 is definitely bigger on that one. I certainly wouldn't mind a trend toward bigger 8's, i sometimes worry about them disappearing into my buns.

great haul hypersensitive, i especially love the second from the top! If i ever found actual Flexis for sale out in the wild i'd go broke!

so the current FOTM is black nickel, Theobroma? I was wondering what to call it, it's kind of antiqued looking!
