Another flexi newbie in need of size help!
I have APL very fine slippery hair, 2.2"-2.4" circumference. I'm going to purchase the mini for half ups, and XS for a pony/small updos.
But do I need a Small or Medium for buns & a french twist? Should I just get them both & possibly grow into the medium?

Also, how on earth do you decide which style to get in each size!? :disbelief

Have you checked out the sizing video? And, it's not really a matter of which style to get, it's more like "which style can i wait til later to get?" I think there are people that have the whole flexi store in their hair toy collection haha. Really thought they are all great and all have their function, but if you are a new time buyer you should start with one that has multiple functions or that you can do a number of styles with if possible

I just placed an order for my first Flexi8s! I know my hair isn't very long but I can do some tail ups with the minis. I'm totally blaming lapushka for being my enabler, she gave me the link!

Ah damn, enabled someone. Gee, that certainly wasn't the intention. ;) :D

The website is quite good, simple and effective. I chose my flexi8s and entered in the discount code. It gives me a message that if I wanted to I could buy one more clip and get one FREE! Well, I couldn't pass that deal up so I ended up with 5 clips on order. It's OK though, I checked with hubby and it will be my birthday present.:cheese: But you ARE an enabler!;)

For those worried about sizes,if your flexi is too big, wrap 1-2 hair friendly elastics around the long pin. That will make it smaller and it won't slip.

Elastics really work!!I used to use a mini at the end[long tassel though] of my one side frontal braid over the shoulder. Now it's a bit tight but xsmall is a bit big,one elastic made my xsmall fit my braid perfectly.

http://www.lillarose.biz/BeautifulLife/become-a-consultant.html According to the website, if you buy the party kit for $49.99, they send you a kit that includes 5 flexi clips, I'm assuming one of each size. I'm going to look into if they allow you to select the styles. If they do, it wouldn't be a bad deal to get 5 flexis of your choice for $10/each, even if the business didn't work out.
The Flexis you get are some arbitrary styles. I don't know where mine are now, but one's a Roman cross, which isn't something I'd wear. When I buy a mini, extra-small, or small, I usually buy them in pairs, because I wear them in pairs.

I just got my first Lilla Rose check :D but I don't know who my customer is. I sent her an email but she never answered. I hand out cards, and sometimes catalogs, to anyone who likes them on the bus.

I just ordered with the fifth free, plus the free shipping. Enabled a co-worker to buy one with me to make up the order, and split the discount. Going to try mediums on my collar bone length hair. Smalls currently work for a peacock twist, which is my go-to style at present. Mostly what I can do with current length + toys. Unless anyone has other ideas for flexi8 styles with collarbone length hair that is fairly fine/thin?

Thanks for the tip! I have a size small and medium. The medium works great for a french twist, but the small is a little too big for a ponytail. It works, but it slides down a lot. I put a hair elastic around the pin and work it to work night and it stayed put all evening.

My Flexi-8s arrived! They are so darn pretty and a high quality and gentle on the hair. I open the envelope and unwrap the pink paper and say how pretty they are and hubby picks one up and says they are well made. It's funny how men and women look at different things. So I put one in my hair into a tails up and hubby says it makes my hair look longer. He's so funny. He says he is going to have to go to Lowes to buy a wheelbarrow to carry my hair in pretty soon because it is getting so long. BTW my hair isn't even to my shoulders yet. LOL. So far my Flexi-8s have been more fun playing with and joking around with than actually wearing! (already worth the price).

...And I caved.
Just purchased the emerald green circle in mini, and tree of life in Small.
I have very fine APL-BSL hair, just passing ii, and figured the mini could keep some hair out of my face, and small might be able to hold a smallish updo. Does this sound right?

Though I'm THIS close to just go ahead & get the XS, medium & large to be safe. Really shouldn't spend more money on my hair. Have to stay strong & wait.
How often do they have free shipping?

I took advantage of the free shipping offer and ordered myself an XL in the enchanting copper rose style http://www.flexi8.com/1911.html?id=Ur7JLzIn :)
I was debating whether to get the tree of life one in XL and the copper rose in perhaps a small or XS but I'm not sure how often I'd use it. So I've gone for the XL and the tree of life will have to wait, I may get it in mega size though I'm not sure if mega will perhaps be too big.
I can use my XL for most buns, the only one I can't is a cinnabun as it's too small, but I fear the mega is too much of a jump in size for me just yet.

The difference in size is bigger between say an L and the XL and the XL and the mega. A mega is significantly bigger than an XL.

I got three sizes of starfish Flexis and two sizes of four-petal flowers (I already had a pair of minis). The mini's flower is smaller than the small's flower, but the starfish is the same size on different sized Flexis. Maybe they should make some of our other five-symmetric friends for Holo?

My hair is at tailbone and I almost always have it up with Flexis. I braid it (or sometimes twist it) and fold it several times and put the Flexis on.

A cinnabun needs larger sizes, I see that with my Ficcare. Normally, I wear an M Ficcare in a LWB, and a L over a cinnabun. Same with the Flexi8s. I know I need a L in a LWB, and an XL for a cinnabun. A mega is still a bit big for me. I like my buns to be nice and tight, though, so they won't budge.

Hi Natalia; Sorry it took so long to get back to you. I had to wait for my hair to dry before I could measure my circumference. I was surprized when I checked it this morning and found it to be almost 3.5" around :)! I had thought it was smaller than that. Perhaps my good treatment of my hair has made a difference because I could swear that when I measured it back when I first joined last August, that I got about 2.75"! In any case, I am happy :p
I use a Medium Flexi for ponytails and they are perfect. XL's work for some updo's. I just need a Mega for CinnaBuns which is my go to style . I'm not sure if I need a mini or an XS for braid ends . I suspect a mini from what reading I've been doing. I think I'll orer a mini in my next order along with another Mega. If it would work out to be too small, I'm sure I wouldn;t have a problem selling it on the swap board :p:p

A new way to use the Extra small flexis! It is a variation on the Cleopatra (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QigGoRY_Nic)style - one that will only work if your hair is long enough (mine is between tailbone and classic).
When I had braided my hair, I brought the braid over the top of my head, and temporarily fastened the end under the dutch braid with a bobby pin (full circle for each braid) and then fastened it all with an extra small flexi on each side - making sure to catchboth the Dutch braid and the braid end, as well as the other braid coming up. :D

Well, following my experience: Take neither nor. Had the idea to get an XS for ponytails and did. The Flexi did actually fit my circumference, but I'm a 1c with quite slippery hair and the Flexi always slipped away. No chance in getting that one to hold. You can try, but I doubt it'll work better for you. Good luck though!

Not from personal experience, but from what I remember of some talk upthread, I'd suggest the XS and wrapping a hair elastic around the pin. That'll reduce slippage.

The minis are really tiny; I have less hair than you do and I can't use them in half-ups. (Just to give you a bit more data: I can use a small for my half-ups. But my hair isn't at all slippery, so that size might not work for you.)

My hair is just past BCL but has a vicious taper because of the way it grows, and is fine but not particularly slippery. My pony circumference is approximately 3.5 inches, perhaps a bit smaller. The hair closer to my scalp is thicker and healthier (I call this post-LHC hair, ha!).
I'd originally thought a medium for the pony, and a large or XL for the buns...but now I think maybe a small for the pony? I prefer the medium and XL size styles, unfortunately, but I don't know that I'll grow my hair much longer than it is right now. I hate to order and find out it's the wrong size. Any advice? :D

I want one for half ups, but I can't decide if I should get a mini or an extra small. My hair is fine and very slippery and I don't use a lot of hair in my half ups. My pony circumference is 3.3". Experiences?

My hair is similar to yours and I have several extra small flexi-8s for half ups. My hair is fairly slippery too and I never have problems with them slipping. I love them.:crush:

I haven't seen a mini size in real life, but they look like they would be too small for my half ups.

ETA: I should add that I do have highlights and they seem to add some texture to my hair. That may help my flexi-8 hold better. I don't really know for sure, but I thought I better mention it:)

Hi MidnightStar;
My pony circumfitence is also 3.5" and I find a Medium is perfect for ponies. My hair is Waist Length , pretty much blunt cut and medium to medium-fine textured. I need X-Larges and Megas for twists and Cinna-Buns. I can only use a Large for updos that don't encase all of my hair such as a "Tail's-Up" type dos. HTH :D

Stupid question - how long did a Flexi size still work for you, when you could actually use the next size for your buns?

I have to use my left over medium-flexi for buns atm, because I had to cut my hair back and now the large are too big. I know large works for me at waistlength hair and I'm heading there again, but it will take me a while.

Now I'm thinking about getting another one, but I don't know whether to get a medium or a large. Any ideas? If I'd know medium would work a little longer for other buns with waistlength hair it'd be easy, but I'm afraid to get it now and be grown out after a few months already.
(I suppose the easiest solution would be getting both, but my bank account sadly says no to this...)

Stick with the M you have now, for the number of months you'll still be able to use it, then you'll be back to using your larges. No need to get another one, really. I'm sure your bank account agrees. ;)

You could get the large and then use the elastic round the stick wrap technique to make it slightly smaller for a few months. The M will only last you a couple of months otherwise... seems like a waist then.

Because of that I asked, whether any of you knows how long a smaller size lasts when you actually have to use the next size. I suppose you're right, though, so thank you for your opinion :)

Thank you for your input everyone. The thing is that I had a small that I got from the Swap board, and I couldn't even use it for a full ponytail as it kept slipping out. It felt like it was secure when I put it in my hair but it kept sliding down. As I said I don't use much hair in my half ups so that's why I was thinking about a mini. I am still not sure.

I really appreciate being able to see the sizes compared like this. I got all the wrong sizes for myself and it is very annoying. I have a lot more hair than I thought I did and I can only get 3/4s of it into the medium that I ordered. Good news is, they have an amazing return policy!

I'm not a huge fan. I used to love hairsticks ages ago, but hadn't used them in years, so maybe I'm not used to them. But these seemed borderline short to me, they weren't too short but I'm not sure how much longer I can use them, and I'm not quite MBL with fine hair. I also don't appreciate how the doodads on top are so easy to bend, I'm afraid I'm going to damage them while putting them in. And I stopped wearing them because some of my fine flyaways kept getting wrapped around the decorative portion. Maybe those are issues with all hairsticks that have decoration at the end? I don't know. I hope that was helpful

Faellen, my go-to hairstyle is a rose bun held with a large flexi-8. I am also fond of using the flexis in other hairstyles with braids - my hair is so slippery that I have found using them in hairstyles without braids tend to not work out very well due to my slippery hair. The parts that are actually held by the flexi, are the beginning of the rope-braid, and the end, which I wrap around the beginning before inserting the flexi. Pretty and secure. Here is a picture from last year.

Sorry it's so blurry, I couldn't get a really clear shot. But it is SUPER comfortable and seems to be holding my for some reason very slippery hair (I think it's the new conditioner, I never have this problem!) very securely. Also I am very glad I took someone's advice here (Hairatic, I think?) and ended up getting the XL, as I could barely fit it over the whole bun anyway.

UP Lisa, may I ask what's your pony circumference? I'm hesitating between an L and an XL for a cinnabun. I just bought my first flexi (Medium) and it's way too small for buns, even for a French twist. I watched the sizing video and sent e-mail to the company and they told me I need a Medium or a Large for buns. After reading other people's experiences I decided Large would be better, but for some reason ended up ordering a Medium. :brickwall My brain must have dozed off. Luckily I can use the M to hold the center or a nautilus bun or hold a folded French braid so it's not a total waste. Sometimes I manage to do a figure 8 bun with it, but it's a tight squeeze.

But anyway, I'm still not sure of my bun size. My ponytail is 7 cm (or 2.75 inches) in circumference. It's probably a little below WL now though I really can't say - I had a baby a few months ago and my waist isn't yet quite where it's meant to be... ;)

Well, I haven't measured lately, but it's at least 2.5". Used to be 3", so I've been rather bummed about that.

I'm at Hip length right now, which is probably about 32" on me.

I went by the charts and the video, also. There's no way I can get all my hair into a Large.

Well, my hair is then about as long as yours in inches. My hair is straighter though, I don't know if that has an effect. In the sizing video the model with the XL flexi has a huge thudworthy bun, so I shunned away from the XL. Now it seems I should give it a try at least...

You can order the special through the Flexi8 website. Just select a regular Flexi that's the same value as the one that you want from the Lilla Rose website, and when you checkout, in the "Message to Seller" box, write something like "Please change this Flexi with the Flexi Special of the month in M from the Lilla Rose website".

Does that make sense? :p It made sense in my head :rolling:

Thanks UP Lisa. I managed to get a large into a bun a couple of times now, just, but I imagine I'll need to treat myself to a bigger flexi some other time. Still the excitement of having these ones hasn't warn off yet.
I took some quick pictures of my messy attempts the other day which hopefully I'll get up soon.

I would say silver or gold, depending on which you prefer/wear more often. I think the others may be too brassy to be really noticeable in a warm haircolor...

We should take a picture once they arrived. And yeah let's see who gets them first, since we ordered same day :D Post here usually is quite fast with things. But, I one time sent something to Sweden and that took like 2,5 weeks in total, which suprised me because it isn't that far from here, compared to USA ^^

I'd second this. (I remember thinking about posting it a few days ago and even searching for words and structures and... what happened?:D ) Something non-red and non-brown based will look great in your hair, so go for silver :)

Ok, thanks. I was thinking silver would be the least attractive with red hair but you are now the second person to recommend it. Thank you for the feedback!

It depends on the red. I think the red in your hair looks more bluish than orangey - therefore the red is more cold than warm. That made me suggest silver.

Of course you can put yellow gold and silver next to your hair and see how they look. A gold ring maybe, and - well, for the silver you can just use an ordinary spoon I think. :) It's the colour that's important, not the actual metal. Besides the flexi-8s aren't made of real gold and silver anyway.

Thank you Ladies! When I go to the Flexi8 website and start looking at those beautiful shiny things I think I want them all! I almost drool, I'm such a weirdo. I never thought that red hair could be considered cool or warm only warm because it's a red. I'm a winter but decided that since I like henna so much I would have to have a hair color that isn't my best choice for the sake of hair condition, so it's very encouraging to hear about a cool red! So now I'm enabled to look for a Small Silver Flexi 8. LOL, off to the website. Thanks again y'all.

Those Flexis really are tempting, aren't they? ;)
As for henna and getting a cool red, my hennaed hair is a cool red in most lights - I have gone for max saturation, and the color is now a sort of burgundyish shade.

There are cool and warm versions of nearly any colour. All seasons have reds (and blues, greens, yellows etc.) but they're very different from each other. If you're a winter, silver will match your skin better than gold.

This is beginning to be a little off topic, sorry for the hijack.

I find that I can usually accentuate the warm look or the cool look if I want. My hair with the henna has a pretty saturated, burgundy look to it because my auburn is already so dark to begin that I get the "full saturation" look after one application. But my skin tone is still on the warmer side. Red hair can be incredibly versatile if you know how to manipulate it, so don't feel like you have to limit yourself!

I'm waiting still for my order of flexi's to come. I hope I got the right size for what I plan to do (Heidi/crown braid). I got the sea turtles in XS. Those are mostly silver with gold accent beads.

lapushka, you can order from Lilla Rose through the Flexi8 website. Just select a regular Flexi that's the same value as the one that you want from the Lilla Rose website, and when you checkout, in the "Message to Seller" box, write something like "Please change this Flexi with the Flexi Special of the month in M from the Lilla Rose website". Hope that helps! :)

Lapushka: DaniVerde helped me with ordering by telling how to, I wasn't sure how to do it either. I also mailed with flexi8 themselves and they explained me too. Here's their reply:

1. Go to www.flexi8.com

2. Choose a clip that is the same price as the item from Lilla Rose.

3. Step through the check out process.

4. Just before paying (after you click on payment type) you can scroll down the page and find a "Special Instructions" box you can type into.

5. Please make your request in this box. For example, "please make switch #______ with style #______ from Lilla Rose", etc.

That's it! We will take care of the changes for you. If you have any questions, please feel free to reply.

I'm an absolute flexi 8 newbie and I was wondering if you guys could help me with some questions I have? (The threat is just so long to read all of it ...)

First, I was reading about custom orders and somebody wrote that you can request changes to the flexi just before you pay it. Does this work also with a style in a different size or should I contact Flexi 8 directly? Do custom orders cost extra?

Secondly, I was wondering which size to choose. I have approx a 3" pony tail circumference and almost 35" of length. My hair structure is fine and wavy. I guess that for buns I will have to use a size XL, but I also would like to use a flexi for a folded up french braid and a french twist. I guess a size M should be enough? What do you gals think??

Thanks a lot! :flowers: :)

Rowanne
June 17th, 2012, 12:08 AM
My pony circumfefence is about 2.75", my length 33" and I can't make a French twist with the M I've got. Folded up French twist works just fine (I posted a pic on page 341). For buns I'll probably need an XL. Papera, what if you got an L for the French twist and tried if you could use that for the folded braid too?

Auburntressed, Alva and Avaya, thanks for the compliments! :)

Sorry, it seems I managed to ignore this part of your post... Anyway, they have answered your question on flexi8.com, please see the part Contact Us. This is quoted from their site concerning custom orders: "Note: There may by a custom work fee of $2 - $4 depending on size and requests. If your changes are more than changing a centerpiece, please send us an email before ordering."

I only wanted to change the centerpiece in my order so I didn't e-mail them beforehand. I've heard that sometimes it takes time until they answer an e-mail but apart from that their customer service is rumored to be beyond amazing. Just tell them what you want, I imagine they would be more than happy to help you.

Hello flexi 8 experts! Im really keen to try out some flexis and am thinking of ordering 2 - one for buns and one for half ups. But even after watching the video on the website im still not sure what size to get. Im thinking maybe an XS and a medium? I usually wear 4 or 5" sticks, my hair is quite fine and thin and somewhere between bsl and waist. Do you think an XS and a M would be suitable?

Extra small is probably too big for a half up if you're i/ii. It's recommended for pony tails with 2.75" / 7 cm circumference. I'd try a mini instead.

I'm not so sure about the buns. M doesn't sound too far off, but maybe you'll get a more accurate opinion from someone who's got your type of hair.

Awaya that is a stunning Flexi 8, it makes me want another one even if I do not really use the one I got very often.

By the way have any of you seen Torrin's new hair tutorials, she have a video up now with two Flexi 8 buns. I am thinking I have to try these.

Oh thats lovely Avaya :) thank you for posting the picture - I shall be sure to post an action pic of the other when it arrives (and when I work out how to use these things!)

ETA: the jade one is a M for buns and the other is an XS for ponytails - should really have got a mini for halfups but i'll probably end up putting an order in for my mother anyway in a few months so i'll see how these first two go

oo thank you dulce :) I just got another XS off the swap board, i had been wanting a plainer one for general purpose but got distracted by all the pretty beads on the flexi-8 website, but now I have a plain-ish silver one with celtic knot on it's way from pepperminttea :D

Thanks Avaya,I actually was stupid and kept it short and coloured in my mid 40's to early 50's,it was very damaged/brassy/breaking off by the salon colouring till I finally decided to go gray and long in my mid 50's.To my surprise I like it much better as it is now ,so am glad to be an inspiration to you. Am glad you won't waste your time, money and damage your hair unnecessarily like I did.

Thank you! I'm thinking of having a mate made for it in a larger size, trying to figure out if I need a small or medium for a ponytail (loose ponytail on me is 3.75" circumference. I have fine hair.)

I think a M might be too big for just a ponytail. I'd try one size up, see what happens. The one you have now is an X-S, no?

Yep! I was thinking I would need a small, just wanted to make sure. They're not really cheap and I don't think I have a use for one that's too big!

Can someone explain to me what the connection is between Lillarose and Flexi8? It looks like Flexi8 is the original maker but then when I go to Lillarose' site, it looks like they are. I'm confused!

They're the same thing, sort of. The same people are behind both. Now someone please correct me if I'm wrong here but I believe they made flexi8s first and then expanded to other products.

I saw that post last night! From what I've been reading, I really hope it was just "growing pains" with Lillarose because it seems like people have been getting bad service and products from them. :(

I do hope though that people in the US will continue to be able to order from Flexi8. I especially like that custom orders are possible through them, and they will be my first choice to order from (even though Lillarose does have some designs I like that Flexi8 doesn't.)

Kaelee that looks so sweet and cute in your hair. It looks like it was made for you. :)

I haven't been wearing my flexis much lately but today is really hot so I have my hair up in a lazy wrap with my XL tree of life flexi w/ pearls. I love how they add a little elegance to a casual outfit. :)

I got home today to find 3 flexis had been delivered (2 from flexi-8 and one from the swap board - thank you pepperminttea). Not had a lot of experimentation time yet but it seems that the XS are good for half-ups (i was worried they would be too big) but the M seems too small for a bun which im pretty upset about because it's beautiful :( I'm hoping it will be better for a french twist so i'll have to brush up on my technique

Is anyone else a little sad that the Flexi of the month from Lilla Rose seems to not be available in the mega size?

Does anyone know of a way to get the flexi of the month in mega?

Just send them an email..they're usually happy to make you one. They just don't offer it as a standard because so few people need a mega ;)

just a quick question, but is there a special technique for using the flexi to hold buns? My XS's work brilliantly for half ups but im still struggling with the M - i don't know if it's just too small or if it's me using it wrong! I'm used to just using a single stick so any pointers would be lovely :)

I finally worked out how to get my M flexi to work in a bun - must have been at least partially poor technique on my part!

I was just wondering if any of you wear flexi's for bed? I'm always too scared to sleep with sticks even when the bun is right on top of my head for fear of the stick coming out/poking me/snapping but I put my hair in a lazy wrap right on top of my head with a flexi this afternoon for a nap when i wan't feeling well and it seemed to work well, little dubious about doing it for a full night's sleep though. what do you think?

I wouldn't do it. A Flexi8 isn't soft, so it can start to hurt during the night.

I have tried taking a nap with a flexi in, but the flexi always came undone.
