View Full Version : dye demise?

So, at long last I received my jamila 2008 (blame the lousy postal services). I intend to mix it with water only since I am feeling sceptical about leaving lemon juice for hours on my already-damaged hair (plus, purified water has a slightly acidic pH anyway). I was wondering how long I could let the mix sit before dye demise.

Dye release can happen quickly when using water. I got release in three hours and I used very cold filtered water. I would keep checking it on the inside of your wrist until you see a slight orange stain. You can feeze the mud with no problem if you can't use it right away. It stains even better after being frozen. :)

Thanks for your answer, but actually, my question wasn't about dye release. I know what dye release is supposed to look like. I was wondering how long I could let the mix sit before dye demise. It's probably not a very pertinent question  but it occurred to me because, depending on the different recipes you find online, you can have a pre-application sitting time from zero (mixing henna with warm water and applying immediately) to 24 hours (recipe on henna-boy (http://www.henna-boy.co.uk/shop/recipes/info_10.php) site: 2*12 hours). So I was wondering how long would be "too long". In fact, I vaguely remember reading that one shouldn't worry about dye demise when the mix is destined for hair (as opposed to skin) because dye will bind to the keratin of the hair however long you wait, but I can't find it back.

On the mehandi page, if you look through the henna e-book you will find a chart that shows dye release. I think after 48-72 hours at room temperature you will have dye demise, but her experiments are with lemon. Dye release happens quicker with water, and I bet dye demise follows suit. I would expect water and henna to die (and therefore dye poorly :p) 24-36 hours after mixing at 70 degrees. But that's speculation.

OK, thanks a lot, that's what I wanted to know. Admittedly it's not a vital question, but I was feeling curious.
