I wonder if that's what those sisters really used. Although, their length probably had a lot more to do with good genes than a good product.

Apparently it was an herbal concoction made by their mother... I read that somewhere... and that scientists at the time tested it and found nothing 'revolutionary' about any particular ingredient. It was likely genetic, though the tonic arguably increased their scalp health which we all know contributes to length in a positive way.

It's also been speculated by some smart person on the internet I can't currently remember that the sisters cutting 'fashionable' fringe made their terminal length shorter, as there is a theory that the scalp likes to stay in equilibrium and drastically differing weight/lengths of hair cause the longer to try and match the shorter. As someone with fringe looking for terminal length that caught my attention, I am not sure how much stock there is in that theory, though, seeing incredible longhairs with bangs.

Either way, it's a great nostalgic ad and their hair does inspire!

I googled them....there is a ton of info. Their mom died when the youngest of them was 3 and 6, so not sure if she came up with it or not. They made a flipping fortune for many, many, many years...they have "affadavits" from people who lost their hair years and years earlier that grew back after trying this formula, and they had a chemical analysis done that claimed it was just plant based stuff, and the best grower of all time. here's one of the links.... http://www.sideshowworld.com/tgod7sutherlands.html

Not only is that seriously long hair, but it looks incredibly thick. They've clearly got good hair genes.

Wonder if there's anything good in the tonic, though.... After all, Monistat definitely affects growth.

I read an article about hair--think it was in allure--anyhow, they were saying that hair in the 18/1900s(early 1900s) was probably in poor condition depending on the person and how well they ate. Because food has a huge impact on the health of your hair, they said hair in the earlier centuries was most likely quite unhealthy due to lack of vitamins (necessary ones) etc. So, it would have been interesting to get some of their hair and do a study on health of 'old' hair vs hair of today. Interesting article--if I find it, I'll see if I can scan in and upload it here.

I doubt it's exactly the same, but I bet you'd find at least a few similar ingredients in the plant oils and such.

I wonder how thick their hair is, and what it'd be classified as if it were air dried and not with all those braid waves.
