Recently I found out how to do bantu knots from hairdictionary.com. I have naturally very straight hair and I wanted to see how good a curl I could get. I did these knots on wet hair in the morning, not taking them out till the evening. Some of the hair was still a bit damp and they did disintegrate cos I fiddled with them too much but anyway here are the results:

As you can see from this next one, the back ones were a bit loose and so straightened out a bit:

Here is the link to the website where I was able to find out how to do these: http://hairstyledictionary.ztn.net/
You can look there for some more detailed instructions but I'd be happy to give you a quick run-through of how to do it.
Firstly, if you want more defined ringlets, I would suggest that you do the knots tightly and keep them there for a longer amount of time or alternately doing them when your hair is wet and waiting until they are fully dry before taking them out.
O.K., so you take a small section of your hair (the smaller the better as I think you get more and better defined curls)
You then twist this up so it curls unto itself (a bit like a mini cinnamon bun) and secure it with a hair tie.
Do this for your whole head in small sections and voila!! :D:D:D

I couldn't tell what she used to secure the ends? And how do you keep the ends from getting bent/fishhook-ey?

Thanks!

You mean like these?

Those are little bee-butt buns. I've never heard of a bantu bun. I just twisted until they coiled on themselves and secured them with a hairpin or two.

This was the result from those:

Yes, Manderly, those are Bantus.
I always just did them and never knew they had a name, either but was glad to hear someone call them something so I could say "I put Bantus in my hair" rather than, I twisted little buns all over my had, lol!
They may have had a name long before I heard the name, I just learned of the term Bantu on another hair site that was primarily Black women and I think it was in reference to African styles or maybe a region.
Lemme go check. BRB.....
Okay, yeah, African, lol!
A group of over 400 closely related languages spoken in central, east-central, and southern Africa, belonging to the South Central subgroup of the Niger-Congo language family and including Swahili, Kinyarwanda, Kirundi, Zulu, and Xhosa

Cool. I like finding when things have lots of different names.

I did this a long time ago when my hair was barely shoulder. I should try it again now that I'm closer to BSL.

Lol, this thread is funny because I was just thinking " I need a style to do" since I just took out my braid extensions and the first thing that came to my mind was bantu knots.

?? lol this was back when my hair was mid-back length... and I tried to sleep like that, and it wasn't happening. So I got up and took them out in the middle of the night and all they ended up being was tangles. :( But I keep the picture around for giggles.

loooool I just secured each knot with a hair band , hairpins? No thankyou I don't think they would have held very well and wouldn't they have been quite uncomfortable? :D:D:D

Thanks for your post. I've always wanted to try these but am not fond of pins.

Oracle, I second that motion, they also get easily lost in hair, bands are just (at least for this updo) more comfy, easy on the hair and more gentle and easy to remove :D
