View Full Version : Does anyone NOT wear their hair up?

Hi all-
Apologies from a relatively new poster, I just was wondering something.
I've had long hair most of my life, I cut it for personal reasons when I was 17 and it's growing back out again. I'm just past waist now and might actually keep it at this length.
I notice to keep their locks healthy lots of people seem to be wearing their hair up.
I've only been able to do this after I had it cut. In fact, one of the reasons I got it cut was to get it into a bun for horse shows.
Otherwise, the bun I make is just so heavy that it makes my scalp hurt and gives me a headache. One time I got it out of a bun and my scalp hurt so much it made me cry. I might have a sensitive scalp, I dunno.
Does anyone have longer hair that doesn't wear it in a bun all the time?
I wore my hair in braids or down a lot when it was thigh-length and it was always thick- I never seemed to have breakage problems.
I just wondered if there was something I'm missing about hair buns.:p I'm trying to figure out the equilibrium bun with hair sticks but all it does is fall out or give me a headache.

I'd say do what works for you! A lot of us are growing out damage or have fragile hair already, so wearing it up helps keep breakage and splits to a minimum. Honestly, when mines a bit healthier overall I'll probably wear it down more.

maskedrose, I just have to say, you're hair is absolutely beautiful!!!!
I don't wear mine up to grow it out, necessarily. My hair does not stay in buns well at all (too slippery), so when I do wear it up, it's Dutch braids or similar. I wear it up a lot to keep it out of my way, but wearing it down has also never really caused me any issues with breakage, etc. I don't seem to have a lot of problems with breakage or shedding for some reason (heredity? Diet? Care regimine? No idea). So, it's not a priority for me. I like wearing it down when work or athletics don't require it be up.

I do a mix of styles -- usually one of the first things I do when I get up though is toss it up in a quick bun to get ready for the day.
There is a lot of difference in the comfort factor of buns with the placement (for me, high is probably more comfortable) and definitely the tool you use to fasten it with. Just keep experimenting.

I only wear my hair up at the barn---I keep it in a braid for riding/teaching/working, then do a folded braid for horse shows. I found a bun pushes the helmet too far forwards. I used to put all my hair up in my helmet, but you can't do this as easily with the newer helmets. (charles owen hampton is my best friend!!).
I know quite a few competitive horse people who have cut their hair to make it easier to show/compete. I'm not sure if I will--meaning, I usually keep my hair at waist, but am trying to grow it to classic. We'll see how hard it is to manage when showing. :)

I have that same problem, especially with the safety harnesses that sit low. Helmets are awesome and they need to fit properly but ARGH!
I've also looked at those little barettes with the hair nets on them... that is, I looked at them and thought: "Ha ha, my hair wouldn't fit in there..."
I also have a huge head, I wear L helmets and 7 1/4-7 1/2 hat size, so it's hard to find something to fit the melon and then do something with my hair.
Shwankie- you might be on to something with hair genetics. My mom's never had problems with breakage and I never have either.

Oh, I'm envious.
I have a lot of taper to my hair because of breakage. Before LHC, I wore it down and loose or an occasional half-up. I didn't pay attention to moving it out of the way of chair backs, or protecting it in any way from the wind. It tangled a lot. A lot, a lot. The tangles led to breakage.
Now I wear it up or in a braid 99% of the time. It's much easier to keep it detangled this way, and that's the reason I started keeping it contained. Now, I love hairsticks and have several go-to up-do styles that are both easy and fun.
I still like to have my hair loose, but it's a lot more difficult to keep it tangle-free when I wear it that way. And for me tangles=breakage.

I MUCH prefer to wear my hair down, or at least in a half up. I'm still trying to find a way! Before I found LHC my hair was a mass of straw! Now I've got it to where the first half of every day it is silk, then goes back to straw  . If I could just find a way to KEEP it silk I'd be all set :p

I wear my hair in braids a lot, and that tends to work fine. When it is completely loose, the main source of breakage I run into is from the detangling process afterwards. Braids prevent most of the tangling, so less breakage results. I do wear my hair up some of the time, but it takes some careful planning, because my hair is rather heavy. It's not unusual for me to end up wearing three hair toys and a half dozen Amish hair pins to distribute the weight evenly.

Brayen--those hair bow things--we call them show bows--are a laugh. The barrette doesn't hold if you have long hair--I know this because I tested one and as I was jumping, I went and turned my head to look for my next fence, and it went flying off my head! Hahahaha.
I have a peanut head relative to my body ;) But, when I put my hair up into it, I could get a larger helmet. Now, I'm about a 7 and 3/4 or so. :D

Oh yeah- the amazing flying show bow. I've done that. It's incredible how far those barettes can go when they spring loose.
Remember the ones in the early 90's that had about an acre of silk wadded up and stuck on the barette? As if I need more things stuck above my neck and under my helmet!
My dilemma is lots of hair toys hold the bun up but by the time I get it solid I get a headache.
I'm still thinking on maintaining this length now... sometimes I want to grow longer though. I keep changing my mind.

Guilty! I do not like wearing my hair up. I tend to wear it down or in a braid.

I wear mine down, or in a low ponytail, almost always. With 4 kids it takes all my time.
If I'm doing some nasty cleaning or want it out of the way, I shove it down the back of my shirt. But it has started poking out the bottoms there too. I might just have to start putting it up sometimes.

I wear it down every day.
I used to put it up in a looped ponytail at home to keep it out of the way but I think that was really damaging so I stopped. I can't figure out how to put it up any other way yet and also I have a long swan neck that needs to be hidden at least in public:) So its down and loose all the time for now at least.

Yes and no. :)
My tiny bun is fine at home but when out and about I prefer it down. Buns just make me look fatter and accent my double chin. Also, right now it's down to keep me warm. When Spring hits it will be pony tail time.

I remember when I was younger I always kept my hair down and was shocked to find out that in secondary school, you HAD to keep your hair up or tied, I was very upset indeed, this was when my hair was long. Nowadays I just put it up to keep it out of the way so I don't notice how short it is lol, but I can't wait till it's longer and I can try the fancy updos :D:D:D But I understand how you feel in that I did used to get a lot of tension headaches from wearing my hair up. I think the trick is to do it loosely in a way that's comfortable for you, but then again I don't know how heavy your hair is, but I'm sure that if you are less prone to breakage naturally then it would be better to keep your hair down, as actually those updos could possibly tangle and cut into your hair.....

December 22nd, 2008, 08:27 AM
I'm at waist, too. Up till now, I've worn my hair down a lot. I have hair that doesn't tangle too easily, and I've been growing out layers that make braids look funky. I think i have no more split ends than the next girl, even after going more than 8 months without a trim.
But now it's getting harder to be out and about with my hair swooshing all around. It's getting caught in things, etc. My purse pulls on it. And at home I'm afraid of being unsantitary when cooking and cleaning.
I, too have a sensitive scalp. I have to wear my hair up for work, and so I've learned to do updos that don't hurt. This can take several tries until I've done it without pulling. I can only use forks or hairsticks comfortably. On days when they hurt too bad, I do a dutch braid. So I can do an updo if I have too.
I'm mostly braiding my hair now. I use a bigger tassle so my layers don't poke out. My ponytails get straggly now, so I don't like that look. I think braids are really the way to go if your hair is in the way and you are sensitive. I wear them to sleep in, too. My hair is slippery--so I have to redo my braid at least every three hours--at least it's quick to do.
The advantage of HAVING to wear it up for work is that if I want to wear it up for an occasion--at least I know some ways to do it that doesn't hurt. I was forced to find some:)
I think after I grow it to TB, I'll probably cut it back to just below BSL so I can wear it down a lot. But to live with it for now, I think I'm past the wear it down point.

I can't wear ponytails any more (not even for baseball hat purposes) without it pulling on my scalp.
Your painful bun issues might be a case of not having found the right hairtoy to anchor it yet, if that makes any sense. You probably have really thick or wavy hair. I'd suggest looking around this site for various hairtoys that people use to anchor a bun and try them out if you have to put your hair up. I haven't exactly tried them all out myself yet because I stopped at a Ficcare Maximas (small), which holds my hair on dirty-hair days only, without pain, if I put it in right.

Braven---I know in my area, the long braid is making a come back in the International rings. I've seen riders in the Grand Prix jumpers with braids down their backs and loose ponytails. And they have hair past bra-strap length. I think it's for safety reasons not to put the hair up into the helmet with GPA and the Charles Owen--either Hampton or GR8--it affects the fit of these newer helmets. I don't get a headache from my hair being up, but I get one from the tension in my neck and lack of food as I tend to show and coach for 16 hr days. As a result, I would wonder if maybe your headaches could be related to tension from competition? Do you eat before shows? I know I can eat at shows, but now have limited time, so I've made foods easier to be eaten by cutting up things to have bite sizes, as well as multiple water bottles available for me to drink fluids.
I know some people have gotten away with a single braid down their back, and hidden under neath their show shirt. Not sure if you are showing western and if those hats are tight fitten/snug like a hard hat? The other option is to buy a snood, and tie hair into a low ponytail, use the snood, helmet over that and ponytail that. This worked for me as well, but I prefer the braid for my needs. :)
Ah yes, the show bows--yep, from the early 90s ---ugh--I never knew how far those things could fly until I was practicing my 3ft equitation over fences course and weeeee. There it went. Tehehehhe.

Me!
I hardly wear my hair up- I suppose that I just love the luxurious feel of my hair around my face.
I also feel more like I'm too masculine to wear my hair up- something about having my hair down makes me feel more feminine.
Also, I blush a lot- I like to use my hair as a shield when I need to 1. hide my blushing cheeks, 2. hide from people, and 3. peek through my hair at cute boys. =3 <3!

Other then using a big claw like clip I can't keep my hair up.
Even though I have fine hair, putting my hair up sometimes gives me a headache too. I go out of my way to make the initial gathering of the hair loose but then the pins or clips, etc. feel so heavy.
I am going to try a sock bun one of these days to see if that will help for times when I really would like it up but want to stay away from a clip.
While I do wear my hair down, I can't stand the front of it being loose and over my face so I almost always have the front drawn to the back in a barrette. Recently I started braiding the front down the back and find that very comfortable especially if I keep it in a very loose braid.

It depends what you mean by 'longer hair'. I have waist length hair. Is that 'longer'? Longer than what?
Being a guy, I don't really feel comfortable wearing a bun, although I have learnt how to do one, and I know there are other guys on here who do wear buns. Besides that, having had fine/thin hair all my life, if I put my hair up it almost disappears.
I usually wear my hair loose, especially at this time of year, although I do wear a braid quite a lot, and sometimes a ponytail, but they don't keep my ears warm!

I don't wear my hair up very often.....sometimes I put it in a braid or ponytail while working/cleaning etc around the house.....I was very glad to learn how to do a couple of buns and even bought some ketylos! I bun when I do a heavy oiling, and sometimes I bun my hair when it is freshly washed, to get it out of my way and give some nice waves when I take it down. Other than that, I enjoy feeling and looking at my hair.....can't do that if it's up.
Maybe when it gets longer, I will wear it up more often....time will tell.....

Me, at least not most of the time.
My hair has about 5 different lengths, the ends are a different color, and the ends/length are thinner than the crown hair. Add frizz to that, and you get hair that makes me happiest when it is down and on days 2-3 after washing.
BUT as it gets longer and the thickness moves down (hopefully!) I notice I do have to keep it out of my way for even the most mundane acts (who knew hair could fall into the dishwasher?!) Generally I have it down at home and at work, then up on the bike.
I don't have the headache problem as my hair has very little weight so twisting it loosely and clipping it up with a Ficcare works really well for all outdoor stuff I do. Until I got pregnant, I was regularly bicycling, then I'd put it into a low, loose braid to at least contain the length. Wouldn't a braid work well for you under your helmet?
hope you find what you are looking for!

I used to wear it in braids before HSA, when I was much younger - sometimes I'd leave them in for a long time. Then when I started coming here I discovered hair sticks and bunning -and now, my hair is much much thinner!
I have been wearing it out as much as possible lately. I like it out, though not when I'm performing. I play guitar and tends to get in the way.

I have worn it up everyday since February and I'm not quite sure why. Part of it is to protect my hair. Part of it was to experiment with updos.
Though beginning next year I plan on wearing it down every now and then.

I've been struggling to keep my hair up all day like I used to. It's probably just an out-of-practice thing, so I'm just trying to keep it up as much as I can stand and hopefully I'll fall back into the pattern. I don't get a sore scalp or anything, I just get the urge to let it loose. I am looking forward to being able to do many more up-dos (coughmorehairtoyscough). :D

I prefer to have my hair down, but at work I can't (at this length) and at home it's sometimes easier to just have it pulled back.
For work I usually do a pony with coloured elastics down the length to contain it, or I pull the top half of my hair back and pony IT, then pony the whole works. Depending on how much time I may braid option one or two.
I haven't found a bun that I like well enough (mine all look like a little knob) and that stays put well enough to feel safe with it staying put for the day.
At home I either leave it how I had it at work, or if it's a weekend, I have it down till something happens that makes me feel I should have it up, usually a sort of twist held with a fakkare.

My hair is thick and slippery, so it's hard for me to put up. That said, I think I just need some practice and the right tools! I don't need to put it up to keep it healthy, and I've never had a problem with scalp pain from the weight, even with waist-length hair -- though back then I usually put it up in a braid crown across the top of my head (can't think of the name...like Laura Ingalls as a teen) so the weight was distributed better than with a bun.

Mine is down almost every day. I wear it in a half-up to keep it out of my face or a braid if the weather is hot or the wind is crazy. Since coming here I have learned some buns with hairsticks but I can't always seem to get the balance right and they only last a couple hours before they are too heavy and I have to take them out. The chinese bun works best for me because it splits the hair up and doesn't have to be tight to stay in.

I do a combination. In high school, I wore my hair in a braid or bun every single day because it was a pain to keep loose hair or a ponytail from getting caught in my backpack/jacket/desk/chair/watch/otherpeople/random things. Learning to use a hairstick properly and getting a Ficcare were my lifesavers because I could quickly and easily get all my hair up and out of the way. Now in my first year in college, I've started to wear it down a lot more - I enjoy wearing it down, and while it still can be a hassle, I have more time to deal with it. Or maybe I just subconsciously like showing it off, I have no idea.
I do admit that having my hair up in a bun all day can be tiring on my neck - in high school, I would often wear it up at school and take it down when I came home in the afternoon/evening. Now I carry a ponytail holder if I want to switch midday, but I also leave buns in longer. I actually do think there's truth in the idea that you need neck strength to hold up hair, at least when it gets to very long lengths/thicknesses. Has anyone else found that a bun would make their neck ache in the beginning, but it's easier now? At least, that's my experience.

I love to wear my hair down to show off how long it is (down to about the back of my knees), but almost always wear it in a tight bunn at work and sometimes a ponytail. I find that when the bunn starts to get loose that I just need to redo it and that keeps it from bothering me. I also wear it kind of high and just secure it with a scrunchie hair tie. The sticks never seem to hold my hair for very long and I find myself fussing with them a lot more than with the scrunchie. I also like to put my hair in a french braid sometimes.

My hair is hip length and I almost always wear it down. If necessary, I put it into a low pony, but this seems to make it tangle even more :(. Putting it up looks odd, as the ends are considerably lighter than the scalp. It just looks better down, that's all.

I have the same problem! My hair is thick and wavy and if I wear it in a bun or ponytail for too long I get major headaches! If I do wear my hair up, it's usually in two braids or one french braid because those styles don't hurt my head so much. The problem is that my hair is so long and heavy that it takes forever to make these look decent in public. So, I usually wear my hair down until I'm doing something that may damage it or make it nasty. In that case I sling it back in a LOW ponytail and take it down and massage my scalp as soon as possible.

I have the same problem! My hair is thick and wavy and if I wear it in a bun or ponytail for too long I get major headaches!
Same here too - except it's not headache per se, rather my scalp hurting like hell to the point I have to let the thing down - at least, what remains of it that haven't been slipping all over - after one or two hours.
Thanks to this thread I have hope in trying new ways that balance the weight differently so that I won't have this problem anymore, although I can't afford to daily use some hairdos that require more than one or two minutes to be done - I'm lazy and usually in a huge hurry in the morning. Then the problem of slippery hair remains, well, I'll have to try different things and hope to find ideas on this board.
For now and for quite a long time, I have mainly kept my hair in a "standard" braid (not sure of the official name of the thing), that I make on my left before going to bed and keep the next day (I know, I know .... I already said "lazy", didnt I ? :D ) and which gradually goes back approx. to the middle of my back during the nigh / day.
I also love two braids on the sides (in front) but it takes too long for me to do it more often than occasionnaly.

I'm the same way as some of you on here. My hair is just past shoulder length now and sometimes when it gets in the way I like to put it up in a high ponytail, but I am finding this gives me headaches by the end of the day. I do have to use some bobby pins to keep the back nape layer up since it's too short to put in the pony, so maybe it's those that are causing stress to my head too. I think I'll start braiding my hair more reguarly now since it's long enough to do that too now (before, I'd have to have about 10 bobby pins to keep it all together!)
But I'd guess I'd say that even though I know that it's protective to the hair to wear it up most of the time when it's long, I'd say when mine reaches about waist length (my goal) I'm probably going to wear it down most of the time. That's mainly how I feel in love with long hair is seeing other people have it down and flowing! But I'm sure there will be days to have it up too.

I used to only wear my hair down or in a low ponytail with a scrunchie and you know what? My hair was in better condition. I now wear a braid, half up with clip, or a bun held with clips and almost never wear it down. I want to start wearing it down more now that I have my length back.

A) heck yeah headaches!! (I live with a permanent one anyway, so I avoid aggravating it :()
B) looks longish but layers make it impossible at this length to do much of anything with it, even a simple braid
C) total updo ineptness!! after 15 years with super-short hair I am totally hair-handicapped when it comes to styles - I can barely manage a ponytail that doesn't look like hell! :p

I haven't been doing it in the winter as much. I just don't like leaving my neck exposed as that's where I get coldest. Of course, I also have more split ends now. Meh.

I do not like wearing my hair up... perhaps this is why I have so many split ends

I get headaches and my scalp tends to get sore from wearing up-dos. I sometimes wear braids, especially when I'm cycling or doing any other sports, but that's the only thing I can do with my hair that doesn't eventually cause me pain. I really like the way my hair looks down, but I do end up spending a lot of time detangling it at the end of the day. I sometimes wish I could figure out something to do with it that helped protect it more. Some of you ladies are so good at sculpting your hair into beautiful styles. I can do french braids and dutch braids, but even those end up pulling and causing me pain.
I don't think my head was this sensitive as a child, and I think my hair was even thicker back then.

I wear my hair down on a regular basis. isn't that the reason why I'm growing out my hair? I want it long so I could have it hang down my back.

Remember the ones in the early 90's that had about an acre of silk wadded up and stuck on the barette? As if I need more things stuck above my neck and under my helmet!
I lived in those stupid things! I hated them but Mom would use the sad face & guilt me into it. And not only for horse shows. Oh no - church, 4-H fashion shows, showing sheep in 4-H - it all required a neon bow the size of a small planet!
I have the same problem! My hair is thick and wavy and if I wear it in a bun or ponytail for too long I get major headaches!
My hair is thinner than it used to be, but the weight still gives me headaches. I used to get headaches from just pulling the front & sides back. I find it's better for me if I keep the bun more towards the nape of my neck rather than up high. I can do a higher twist if I use either a fork or several sticks to anchor. (And if it's a good day & the fork decides not to pull my hair...) It still hurts & pulls my head backwards sometimes & so then I just pull it down & do an English braid. It's too much bother to leave it down all the time, what with the Kansas wind. That & I love the looks I get when it's down for the first time in months in front of co-workers... :eyebrows:
My buns also hold better if I put them up damp but that also adds to the weight. If my hair is dry, they won't hold at all - just untwist & I'll suddenly discover a ponytail hanging over my shoulder...

Honestly... I am a bad LHC'er, I wear my hair down for at least part of every day, I feel prettier. My hair is waist length.

I wear my hair down most of the time. Funny, but I wore it up twice this week. Once with my version of a "french braid" and today with a clip. I got compliments on the french braid by a few people, and nothing on the clippy today.

I wear my hair down most of the time, sometimes tying my hair hurts my head, also depending on what hair accessories I use.

Mostly I keep mine down...in the summer I put it up and I wear it in a pony at night.

I like mine down especially in the winter. In the summer I'm all about the ponytail. Last summer I noticed a lot of splitting where the elastic was, so I'll probably try buns or clips instead. I'm about BSL and going for waist. I'm sure if I was a little more ambitious with my goal (hip or longer) I'd want to be more protective and keep it up.

My hair is only about to my bra strap...so not as long as many on here. I don't like wearing mine up though. Now that I am trying to grow it out, I will probably start...and I am looking forward to trying out some new up-do's on here. :)

I prefer to wear mine down. If I do put it up, which is rare, it is either in a braid or just put part of it up. Putting it up for too long for me gives me a headache. I also feel that I look better with it down.

I had healthy WL hair all through high school, and hardly ever put it up unless there was a darn good reason for it (sports, riding horses, raining or windy weather, etc.). I knew how to do a basic bun, a French twist, peacock twist, and English & French braids. When I started to watch Torrin Paige's videos I was SHOCKED at all the cool stuff you can do with long hair!

My hair is just past bsl, and it's already starting to hurt my head when it's up. When it was longer (waist+), I pulled it into a low ponytail to work out or if I wanted it out of my face, and that was about it. Some of us have heavy hair, I guess! Do what works best for you.

this is exactly the case for me too! wearing my hair up gives me headaches and i dont tie/pull it tight when i have an updo - it is loosely tied back! but still gives me headaches! also hubby loves me wearing it down :D

This thread is very enlightening, and a good read for me! For some reason I thought amost anyone with healthy long hair needed to have it secured. Always secured hair is probably healthiER, but I guess it doesn't necessarily mean you can't have healthy hair if you wear it downI have been desperately trying to wear it up or more secured somehow. I wore braids for years but now every 'secured' style seems to hurt my head, and believe me, I think I've tried every trick and hairtoy available:rolleyes: A shampoo and hair cream I just tried has made my usually tangle-prone hair veerrry manageable so I want to try wearing it down a bit more and see how that goes.

No, I don't do it. I tried, but don't find it either comfortable or good looking. It's usually in a ponytail and sometimes loose.

I almost always wear my hair down. Updos usually pull at the front and are uncomfortable, and most don't suit my face. At home, I'll sometimes wear a braid or loose ponytail just to keep it out of the way.

Here's a confession, I wear my hair down a lot. Even knowing all of those up-do's, I still like my hair down the best. Sometimes I have to go a couple of days in a row with it down because my head just hurts from wearing it up. I try not to get it all caught up in things (it's reached the length when it's up in everybody's business...lol) so as not to damage it too badly, but I still just like the way it looks when it's down.

I very often wear my hair free flowing. I simply prefer the way it feels and it is easier to me. Though I do enjoy the odd artistic up-do, I'm more of a down and wild sort of specimen :)

I try to wear my hair up when I can or when I'm not doing anything interesting/seeing anyone important... at home, to class, etc. But I prefer to wear my hair down for social outings. It looks a lot better on me, I think.

I love to wear my hair down, and it worked for me until I reached waist. Like ChatoyantLocks said, the detangling process afterwards is the biggest damaging source for my hair.
I still wear my hair down, about twice a week I guess. For me it also matters what I have to do that day. On the bike or when I'm working hard (I study theatre) I need to wear it up, but inside a building, at home, or in a theory class it doesn't tangle that bad.
So what you could also try, is to wear it up in windy/hard work moments, and then let it down when you can and feel like it. I change my hair about 3 times a day (it's really heavy), and it hasn't damaged my hair.
