View Full Version : Ow! Alice bands

I love Alice bands, but they hurt behind my ears after a while. I wear glasses and the pain is worse when the ear pieces are under the band so I usually have to sort of set the band's bottom pieces back farther behind my ears and am hoping this doesn't look weird.
Anyone have any good tricks for painlessly wearing Alice bands?

Showing my ignorance here, but what is an Alice band? I've never heard the term.

I know exactly what you mean! I would recommend getting a soft one that is connected at the bottom with elastic. They put far less pressure on your head!

Islandgrrl: It's one of those bands that fits over the top of the head...like Alice in Wonderland. Usually plastic...I think. (Or maybe I'm just cheap!)
lyria, I'm going to look for one of those...thanks!

Another term for a Headband? Or is it different?

I've never been able to wear those plastic (or swoopy metal) ones - they're too squeezy on my head and I get headaches. I can wear stretchy ones though, the kind made of t-shirt material that go all the way around (does that make sense?).

Right. Hoping someone can offer a solution. Have you ever tried wearing them with glasses? That makes them hurt almost immediately. Ouchy!
Maybe a piece of 3M foam that sticks on one side? I need to go to the hardware store today so maybe I will browse around.

Target has some now that are soft plastic on top (like multistrands that look sort of leatherish) with a wider, stretchy band for underneath so it gives a lot more and does not fit too tight or squeeze anywhere. I have a couple of them and find them comfortable all day.

i cant wear the plasitc ones because they squeeze waaaay too much, and the fabric ones, pop off the back of my head! (Im cursed either way!)
GlennaGirl, I have a soft pliable/bendable/moldable plastic one with the elastic underneath if you're interested in it. let me know! I cant wear it because it pops off mah' head!

Fencai -
The kind i'm talking about is kind of in between. I have two that are patent leather on top and connected by elastic at the bottom. The are completely flexible, but the leather has a soft fabric lining underneath so it stays on your head. JCrew used to have them, but I don't see any on their website right now...

I can't even wear glasses because I can't tolerate any pressure around or behind my ears - I get almost immediately nauseated and dizzy. So I definitely can't wear hard headbands.
I do like the soft fabric ones, but almost all of them slip off towards the back of my head unless I wear them almost all the way down onto my forehead, and that sure looks silly. I must have a weird shaped head.

Thanks, girls. The all-elastic/fabric ones slip off my head too. :o If only I had a little hook at the back of my neck! That's the area it slips off of.
Great ideas...I will look for some of these suggestions.

Try Goody Flexible Fit Ouchless headbands. I adore mine. The are a soft flexible rubber type thing that have what appears to be a hair elastic with no metal at the bottom. Or goody stayput headbands, these work well i just do not find them pretty.

Other brands make similiar things, like Conair.

I have a couple of stretchy fabric ones, and some that are essentially beads on elastic cording in a woven pattern that I wore back when I was wearing contacts. The hard plastic ones always hurt.
Can't wear any of them with my glasses on. No way. It just doesn't look right at all. Oh well...

I hold the fabric ones on with bobby pins. No other way around it. I always thought it was because of my huge head...?
The plastic ones don't hurt my head until the end of the day, but I do like that I can rearrange them a lot.
All headbands/Alice bands fall off my head to some extent. The best are the elastic ones that look a bit like bra straps...

I am wearing headbands now every day, together with my glass without problems. The only brands I can wear are FranceLuxe and Ficcare, everything else hurts after a few hours but these two brands are very comfortable for the whole day.

I have a really good one from Claire's made of metal which I bent into a u shape so it doesn't hurt. Claire's often has metal ones although some are more maleable than others. I have a few which I tried bending but they just go back to their original shape and still hurt, but some a really easy to bend and keep the shape. I never wear plastic ones anymore as those always give me headaches.

If mine squeezes too tight I stretch it out on a group of books or the back of the couch, some of them then loosen up. It takes a couple days.
