View Full Version : Show us your VINTAGE hair toys!

I've seen threads for showing off hairtoys by various makers, but have yet to find a thread about my favorites: vintage hairtoys.

I recently began collecting a few of these and I know there are quite a few others here who collect them too. Some of the ones I've seen people post about have been absolutely gorgeous.

So, does anyone want to discuss vintage hairtoys or share some pics of their collections? I have a few pics in my albums and some new items which I'm going to add. I'd love to see what others are collecting and wearing.

Here's a pic of me wearing the largest of my vintage celluloid mantilla combs:

http://forums.longhaircommunity.com/album.php?albumid=2115&pictureid=25491

I'm afraid this one's a bit too large and showy to be practical for wearing, but I like it. I have some smaller ones which I do wear quite a bit.

Anyone else?

Why can I not see it?

Oh crud. I am having problems this week that I cannot show any pictures or even make my links to pictures work.

I don't know what I am doing wrong??? I have posted pics and links just fine in the past. Now suddenly I cannot post anything even though I am doing the exact same thing as I did before. Anyone else having trouble? I tried on both my home and office computer.

Argh.

Anyway, if you want to see the pic, I do have it in my hairtoys album, along with a few others. I will try again to get a pic here though. I love the threads where we can come and look through a bunch of pretty hairtoys. I got two new ones in the mail yesterday too so I would love to show them.

Have you tried (and I can't believe I'm recommending this) photobucket? It's been behaving for me now the past month or so! It is very frustrating to try and post these pics, after taking the time to take them, write descriptions and then to have them not work.

Try using the "Preview" also, before hitting the "Submit" for posting - you'll be able to see right away if your pic is not there.

I have Soooooooo many antique and vintage hair accessories, don't know where I'd start! I'll see what I feel like showing off today....

Thanks, I'll try the preview thing. And I'll consider (shudder) returning to photobucket. In the past I have been able to link right to my photo album here on LHC. Is there any reason it should not work? Also, I could just copy and paste a photo right into my post. But not now. It shows up when I type the post but disappears when I submit the post. Didn't do that before. Harumph!

I can't wait to see some pics of your beautiful hairtoys!

Oh my goodness Peggy, my heart skipped a beat when I gazed at all of your beautiful vintage combs!!

This is a wonderful thread idea. I don't have any vintage hair accessories as of yet, but I'd really like to change that in the near future. Where do you come across beauties like these? I've looked on ebay, but perhaps I'm not using the right search tools. I've also strangely enough never come across any vintage hair accessories at antique and vintage shops. I'll just have to start looking harder!

joyfulmom, I really hope you can get your picture to work. I would just love to see your vintage hair toy!!!

Oh WOW! Those are gorgeous. I am SO envious. Not only are they beautiful, there is such variety there.

Do you ever sit and wonder who the original owners were and where they wore these beautiful combs? I wish I knew.

You have to use the bottom code, the image code, I clicked on yours and copied and pasted.

Actually it says IMG code, it's the bottom of the four, when you roll your pointer over your pic, you will see the selections, you copy the bottom IMG code and then paste here.

Wow..those are some beautiful pictures of your hair toys and accessories. I have just started to compile my collection and hope it could one day be as nice as yours is lol. Have you heard of the product review site ExpoTV.com? It's a fun site where you can make money by posting video reviews. I took a look and there did not seem to be many hair accessory product reviews and they could help out us girls a bunch when we are making purchases. The marketing company I work for is actually running a campaign with them. They also launched a program where you can win some money/prizes in time for the holidays. You can check it out at: (link removed because of possible solicitation.)

Thank you Sahiba. Yes it is a braided bun. It's actually two braids bunned in opposite directions, if that makes any sense. The comb isn't really holding the bun, but just accenting it. I put the bun up first with Amish pins. I'm a little afraid to try to rely on most of my vintage combs to hold an updo securely. I would feel terrible if I snapped one of the prongs. I don't know how brittle the celluloid can get over time, but it seems prudent to be gentle with them.

Pretty. How big is the large comb? Is it a wearable size? I love faux tortoiseshell. Do the barrettes have a metal back? I have a few vintage barrettes with metal backs. They are surprisingly gentle on the hair, thought they don't hold a ton. I think they may have been intended to be more decorative?

The comb is eight inches overall. 3.25 on prongs. The others are solid celluloid, the hold ok, the single used to be a set of three but I lost the other two. They were my favorites. The mantilla is too heavy for my hair right now, I am sure it is more decorative than functional.

The problem with the vintage and antique combs and hair accessories is the possibility of breakage. You can figure they are going to be for "decorative purposes" only, rather than being used to secure a style.

But you can break any of your hair toys if you don't treat them with care. The vintage items are well worth keeping in mind not to shove too hard, or drop on concrete (see the chipped ficcare thread - not only vintage toys get injured, tragedy can befall them all.....).

It is fun to wonder who had these pretties before, where did they wear them, to imagine how they must have been dressed up just so for a night out with their favorite guy.

I have a tort comb on the way that was a bit of an insane purchase, even for me. For it has been broken and painstakingly repaired by a jeweler, very old break and old repair. The comb was from Montana and I could just see the story, how the precious comb - a piece of a home left behind, maybe? - was dropped, breaking off the side of the intricate carving.

The tears and loss that must have engulfed this poor woman - enough so she could not simply allow this comb to go, to dispose of it. And so it was taken in and a jeweler did his best to reassemble the comb, to bring it back to life again.

It's injured, but was still a beloved treasure held near and dear until a time when there was no one left to know its story, appreciate the uniqueness and beauty in spite of - and, in an odd way, now added to - the mend made all those many years ago.

You don't have this sort of emotional connection with a ficcare, regardless your devotion to the product! These are pieces of art from another time in history and it's a privilege to own and share them now.

First a delicate Edwardian beauty:

Elrond's Emporium on Etsy is a good place to start. She had a lot of gorgeous toys, and excellent customer service, but make sure you read the listing - a few of the combs she sells are not suitable for wearing.
In additional to vintage Western combs and picks, she also has some lovely Kanzashi, and other oriental lovelies. She just put this one (http://www.etsy.com/listing/79384061/vintage-hair-comb-japanese-art-deco) up - I just about swooned when I saw it! :crush: I really hope somebody buys it, or I won't be able to keep myself from that "buy" button! :p:o

Here's some of the combs. I'll post more in my album - I've taken pics of most of them, though it's sort of hard to see them.

These below are a few of my absolute favorites, though who am I trying to kid? I love them all!

I've tried to get a decent variety of combs in the collection - from the different genres, different materials, representing a spectrum, though still have a long way to go.

Because I wear my combs, don't just purchase to hide away and pray that they will take off and make me wealthy some day, I'm not going to try for the ancient or super delicate pieces for it's heart-breaking when they crack.... :o(

Anyway, here's the ones I took for this thread:

I can't get the pics to upload into the album, so here's a couple more - not what I was going to add, but gives you a bit of an idea of the comb collection.

http://i189.photobucket.com/albums/z235/plelliott254/023.jpg

http://i189.photobucket.com/albums/z235/plelliott254/024.jpg

http://i189.photobucket.com/albums/z235/plelliott254/025.jpg

http://i189.photobucket.com/albums/z235/plelliott254/026.jpg

I also love the antique/vintage slide/barrettes, though the connecting mechanisms are usually very delicate, if they're still there - more likely than not, they are broken off. You can still use them, though.

I wear mine, and do not wait for special occasions. I don't care what strangers think of me, and if they find me odd for wearing tradition hair styles with antique art combs in them, well, that's too bad for them.

Peggy :thud: wow...you have some real beauties there. And so many. I hope one day to have a collection even half as grand, but buying a house seems a little more like a priority...lol. You do know not to store them in plastic right?? This can cause them to start to deteriorate..the celluloid ones, anyway...and when this happens to one, it can spread to another just by being near it as it somehow releases a gas. If you care to know more, ask Heidi W. She's the one who first told me, and now that I have seen one of these "diseased" combs, it is a big concern of mine.

You can find MANY of them on Etsy in the $35-40 dollar range, at Elrond's Emporium...I've bought 9 from her so far, and all have been in great condition, and she is a very sweet woman.

Yes - I am well aware of the infection that melts down celluloid combs and can infest all of your other combs if you're not watchful. It's easy to spot - all that "crackling" and "webbing" particularly noticable in the prongs - and I keep an eye on mine.

None of my combs are stored in plastic. What I wish I had was more room - they are far more packed together than they should be and it would be nice to get more storage. I have some in that wood silverware box, but only the ones that do well being closed up - the metals are in there.

I do believe that Heidi W. has a collection that would put my little guys to shame, and she is a great resource on all hair-related matters - and her hair is amazing, too! ;o)

Victorian Trading Co. has some gorgeous hat pins. As long as you didn't stick yourself when inserting into hair, is there any reason these can't be used as hair sticks?
http://www.victoriantradingco.com/store/catalogimages/1a/i18959.html

I wonder if we could to the paper rolling with glue to bulk them up and make them less likely to stick you?

Though on second thought, these are not "vintage" but are instead newfangled with a faux-vintage look.

I don't know about those hat pins, they don't seem sturdy enough to hold up hair that had any weight to it. Maybe someone with very thin, fine hair or for a tiny half-up?

I have two handfuls of some of Peggy's larger combs that I just added to my own collection of large vintage and antique combs.

Sadly, I rarely wear them, most are so large.

Maybe I should just bite the bullet, and wear them more often, for no reason other than just because I can.....

Calaelen
August 22nd, 2011, 03:19 PM
I wasn't waiting..lol. I just couldn't justify buying two or more of them while I am cut off(I haven't been doing good in this area to begin with, but I really need to slow down as hubby and I are buying a home soon)...I couldn't let the gold pique one go, so chose it over the red stones...

Celluloid combs are prone to a "virus" where the gases in the comb start breaking down, it shows as a yellowish discolouration with cracking or spider webbish splitting in the tines particularly. It can also spread to a comb that is too close to it, so it is definitely something to watch for.

Celluloid combs should be stored in a dry place, that is not plastic, as this can cause the breakdown to begin...heat, humidity, and not getting enough ventilation are also issues when storing them.

I have mine displayed standing up all along my mirror on my wooden dresser, and they seem to be doing very well like this.

For real tortoiseshell, you have to be careful of humidity, and moisture, and make sure that it is stored well ventilated, displayed on a dresser, a table top, or in a display case is good enough, honestly, if you're wanting to pack them, natural acid free materials should be used, and be sure not to pack too tightly, make sure to keep cool, and not air tight..

To clean, a damp cloth, then dry very well, and apply a small amount if oil to it to keep its natural moisture and sheen.

Normally I store my sticks and forks in vases filled with rice. I donīt want to stick the tortoise in it. I am afraid it could dry out the shell. Or am I wrong? Dorothy
November 28th, 2012, 07:33 AM
I don't know the name of the clip, but I have a bunny barrette that I think is from the 40's or 50's (because of the design) that has the same closure. It may be bakelite or celluloid. One way to tell is to hold it in your hand and rub it repeatedly, firmly, back and forth in one spot until the spot warms, and then smell it. If it smells like formaldehyde it's Bakelite. I have found when I do this to celluloid it smells dusty, and later plastics don't smell when you do this.

neko_kawaii
November 28th, 2012, 08:35 AM
Ah! I had heard about applying heat to see what kind of plastic something is but this is a much easier method (and less damaging). No smell, so most likely modern plastic. On my blog FrozenBrittania said she'd seen this kind of closure in the 80's, so it sounds like this closure might have been used for quite a while.

It is 2.5 inches long, 11/16 wide (just under 3/4). It is not certainly not ferrous. I don't know how to identify brass or gold plating. The tips are ever so slightly darker which suggests a thin coating that has worn off. The "stones" are set in small cups that are holding them by pressure. They are so small I just don't know how to tell what kind of material they might be.

If the stones are glass they will feel colder than plastic. They look glass. I think it's a little like this one

and it's supposed to be from the 40's or 50's. My guess, if it's not magnetic, is that it's brass, with glass stones.

"Piffy" in piffyanne means "small", but I'm really 5 feet tall (not RIDICULOUSLY small, just somewhat little), and this thing DWARFED me.

Madame Maxime from Harry Potter MIGHT have been able to pull it off, but I can't imagine this being flattering on anyone, but that's just my taste.

I didn't buy her (for some reason it seemed to be female, it was big enough to be personified) because she was $185.00, which I thought was a bit ridiculous for French Ivory, but you can all tell me later that I was a fool to pass it up.

The vendor let me pose with it though.

Please believe me when I say it was far more impressive in real life than it is in the picture, we see so many incredible things in pictures that I think we're a bit desensitized.

Cross-posting this here, too, as I am SURE someone here won't have seen it the other places I put it, and it was way too cool.

I bought the first combs of my new little collection at yard sales last weekend.
The Grand Total? $5.50 for all of them!
I think I inadvertently set the cost-bar for collecting a little low! hehe :D

Anyone want to take a whack at dating them for me?

And for a little action shot(I went a little modern and wore it off to the side for the day):

The two ivory-colored combs date from the '80's. I was there, and the "cushion" combs were all the rage then. As for the red rhinestone comb, that one is difficult. The leaves show an Art Nouveau influence but rhinestones were used from late Victorian times onwards.

kme81 I agree with Eboshi's date of the 80's of the ivory coloured pair. As for the gorgeous antique one, I think it was likely made between 1890-1905. It isn't Art Nouveau or Art Deco typical, which makes me think it is an earlier piece than either of those periods. What a Bargain!!!

Most of the objects shown in this thread are made of celluloid. Do not store in direct sunlight; do not store in plastic or deny it any oxygen. Store them in even temperatured rooms. And hope for the best. Every time you buy a new celluloid object isolate it for 3 months at least to guard against spreading the disease known as virus. I wanted to mention that the above photos show two kinds of plastic. The red comb is a two tone tone made of celluloid; the two small combs are from more modern plastic around the 40s or 50s.

I am not kidding. The virus is highly contagious in objects of celluloid, any object. So beware.

Nice vintage combs. I have a collection of over 200 hair combs. I don't think you want a picture of all that!

Well, as soon as I get my camera's battery recharged, I plan to put a powerpoint together. To learn more about combs, visit creative-museum.com and press in the upper right corner for ENGLISH, and then listen to any one of 4 hair comb tattletales, with loads of pictures. There's a lot to see. Also, Susannahscombs sells combs for the avid collector, and for pricing reference. Most combs in this post were made around 1900 - 1925 or thereabouts out of celluloid which was all the rage until women cut their hair. Some of the combs in this post might be August Bonaz hair combs, which are signed on the back. Lovely vintage items, ladies. Just beautiful. We DO have some serious collectors here, which is new info for me.

Whenever I wear a comb, I do not ask the comb to hold my hair up. I use long bobby pins and finish that way, and then insert the hair comb. That's how I do it. I make SURE the comb won't slip out, and lose it somehow.

Dorothy, brought up an interesting question about rhinestones. In most combs of celluloid it is rhinestones, not real jewels. They were pressed into the comb when the making of the comb was hot, and it can therefore be quite difficult to clean these combs. Not anything will work. Usually just water, soaking, and then some dishsoap combined with the use of a toothbrush. I recently used what is known as DIRTEX, which is a great cleaner on a celluloid item. Did a great cleaning job. We'll see if it advances the virus or not. Only time will tell. I have haircombs and purse combs and all kinds of combs. Some combs are sold with a few missing rhinestones, or paste stones, and some are often dead, meaning they have no luster anymore. Rhinestones can be replaced if you want. Need some jewelry supplies to get the right size/color of stone.

Calaen, or however it's spelled. Um, aha, okay, no I do not know about signatures on other tortoiseshell hair combs; but I know of books that carry the logos.
heidi w. Generally, if a comb is signed and dated that helps to give a date on the comb itself. It's nice when a comb is signed and dated. I have an August Bonaz comb; oh, and be sure to get plenty of pictures of front and back to eliminate exposure to the virus. Can't miss a bloom.

I have dyslexia and I am communicating in a second language. You know I you mean well, but those who just can not wrap their head around a forum not being an English class actually drives allot of people from expressing ourselves on forums, it is actually quite annoying and hurtful when we try our best and there is constantly some spelling Nazi who can not keep to the topic and answer the posts we actually write but have to nag on spelling, that yes is not perfect and is not going to become better by such constant berating. I am not a ten year old girl in your classroom, I am a grown woman and if you can not stand to see my imperfect spelling I am sure there is an ignore button here somewhere. I am sorry to sound so harsh and I do not mean to insult you, but I know several others who have dyslexia who no longer participate in online forums due to people making such corrections to their spelling, and that is a real shame as forums should not be limited to those who have perfect spelling and grammar. I still participate in forums but my enjoyment of them are reduced by the frequency of encountering real or hobby English teachers who have nothing better to do than to nitpick on others spelling. So while I appreciate your intent I do feel I have to say that such comments as the one above do far more harm than good.

So you are sorry for the beratement I get and then go right on to continue to berate, then you are not sorry. I have not protested what you say about what is correct spelling, I have said that it is not your place to correct me, this is not your classroom, if you want to rant about proper English get a blog.

Now you know, so try making a change. It's worth it if you're communicating in a second language. But let this thread be about the neat-o haircombs and nothing else. Thanks for telling us. Hope you get to improve in time.

You know what, when I meet snotty people like you I sort of feel like not learning as that arrogant attitude get on my nerves. Now here is the case little miss English teacher, when I go to my bellydance classes yes I expect the teacher to correct my posture, however if someone in a random discussion where to do so it would be quite rude. Save your lecture for your students. Also as for improvement, try to get some manners, I hope you get to improve in time. Now as for letting this thread be about hair combs sure I am all for that and the moment you stop trying to correct my spelling and stop talking to me like a five year old for not having perfect English we can go back to discussing just that.

PS: I have a disability too, discalculia, which is the beign of my existence to this minute. No one gives me a break on my mothly bills. None whatsoever. It's the way the world is. So get used to it.

You know what there is a big difference between giving a break on monthly bills and treating others with respect and manners. If a blind man comes up to me and asks what the time is since his special watch have stopped I am not going to say, there is a clock on that storefront read it yourself you idiot, if someone have a problem walking I am not going to push them out of the way. Showing some understanding and politeness to others is not giving them a break and just saying it is the way of the world I get to be a a-hole to everyone who do not conform to my standards, that is just a sad way to look at things. You know I have another syndrome for you, it is PDD politeness deficient disorder and you really should have it treated.

She still made the mistake in her further posts. So what.

The so what is that you are going off topic to be rude to me since you have a stick up your a** about spelling and at the same time you make mistakes yourself, and quite a few of them if I may add, have you ever herd the term throwing rocks in a glass house, read up on it.

I've been taking photos to document my haircomb collection, Calaelen has seen these photos already, but I daresay they might interest some of you.

For this project I took a huge sheet of white paper, arranged it in the one spot in my house where the lighting is so perfect there are no lighting problems such as weird shadows or weird double-shadows (it really is surprising how hard it is to find good light sources), and arranged my camera on a tripod so that all the photos I took would be in scale to each other.

It took some doing.

Then I used Photoshop to adjust the backgrounds of the photos to a clear white.

I don't remember it being sold as red, no, but yes, it has a moire finish to it, it's lovely. About 5 or 6 inches across at the widest point (I don't have it in my hand to measure it right now) but it's lovely.

The top one is probably my favorite, and I've got a tortoiseshell one I shared a page or two back, too.

Keep sharing. I'm keeping up photographing all my 4 boxes of combs, barrettes, and hair combs. Looking for more, still. I keep thinking I don't have any combs, until I unroll the tissue paper....
Surprise!

OH, a moire finish (minus the grave mark in both moire and grave), see I can spell, aside, just to point out...oh well....a moire finish is a swirly, kind of curly finish to the exterior of the comb; the finish being the celluloid itself, although it's still a celluloid hair comb.

Just to explain,

I never buy from Simitra as she sold off a collection from someone she knew who died, and never received permission, I believe. In the hair comb collector world, no one likes her. She has sold me a couple of bogus hair combs as well. I look on ebay under antique hair combs; celluloid hair combs; old hair combs and the like, and then I substitute combs for the word pin, as anything with two teeth or less, is a pin.
heidi w.
I find the best combs generally come from Susannahscombs, but in recently looking and in the process of photographing my combs, I found I had several of them already, only a bit better. And Susannahscombs although she's a member of hair comb collectors, also packs in plastic, so ask quickly (as in asap) to wrap in plastic if you buy from her.

Hi :) I just wanted to pipe in on the pink comb. (Both the shell effect, and the stones are pink in this piece) It was sold as a Pink Moire comb. I originally bought it about 2 years ago, but as I never wear pink, and it just sat looking pretty decided to pass it on to Piffy :) It is great to see it get some love, as it is a beautiful piece!

As to Simitra not being a reputable seller, this I have heard. That being said, the Norma Hague collection which she sold, was left to her in a will, was it not her right therefore, to do as she pleased with them? I've bought both from her Simitras shop, and her Etsy, and some of the most collectible, valuable, combs I have I got from her at absolute steal prices. Suzannah has some amazing stuff, but she doesn't like shipping to Canada, and the pieces I have from her took quite some doing.

To explain a bit more further....
I bought my initial hair comb from Simitra. It was a real celluloid comb with appendages glued on, the wrong size and whatnot. But it did get me started. It wasn't till years later that I met another collector and accompanied him to a hair comb meeting and become the newspaper publisher that I learned more. Simitra sent my friend two bogus combs: originally described as ivory hair combs it absolutely was not ivory; it was some kind of modern plastic. All combs I've received from Simitra have stuff glued on, that eventually fell off.
It's sad, but true as my new powerpoint will eventually show. It's a lot of work to take a photo of every single object I own. But I'm on my way....
Yes, I agree, it's her right to sell whatever to whomever if she inherited it. I never quite understood exactly the pickle with Simitra. But I just don't buy from her as I don't like receiving bogus hair combs.

This would encourage me to think differently if I had received bogus combs. No wonder you weren't a happy customer. Luckily the ones I have received from her have been legit. I will photograph them in coming days to show why I am a happy customer. :) I think you'll find a few that were the ones that swayed me towards liking her shop. It is kind of like finding a hidden treasure, when you find something amazing at a steal of a price. :) Right?

My three funny old combs. I don't wear them out too much - I can only do one updo!

Farver, The center comb is actually what's known as a pin; it looks like the top is made of some kind of metal such as perhaps brass. The other two are celluloid, one a black overlay comb; the other a faux tortoiseshell hair comb. Store in anything BUT plastic, spare from direct sunlight, and keep in an even-temperatured room. I find most celluloid combs are of a kind of fan shape or circle shape of some sort.
Nice hair combs.
Very wearable.

Here is my tiny collection - as much as I care about this, you'd think I'd have more, and I think I have some that are hiding. The first pic is of all of them, the second is of the Japanese ones, my favorites, and two Chinese ones, the silver piece and the carved quartz crystal dragon underneath.
http://i672.photobucket.com/albums/vv88/DorothyatKansas/hairtoys/hairtoys001.jpg (http://s672.photobucket.com/user/DorothyatKansas/media/hairtoys/hairtoys001.jpg.html)
Here the first 3 on the top are celluloid, and the last comb is pressed and carved horn, that I got from Peggy E, and I love that one, I wear it to work.

http://i672.photobucket.com/albums/vv88/DorothyatKansas/hairtoys/hairtoys003.jpg (http://s672.photobucket.com/user/DorothyatKansas/media/hairtoys/hairtoys003.jpg.html)

In the Japanese ones, there are Tami Kanzashi, the pins with the beads on them, the combs are called Kushi (I think Kushi means comb) I don't know what the strings of beads are called - one is white coral dyed red, the other I'm not sure, maybe nephrite, maybe something else. I use those to wrap around my buns and then pin the strings so they're not visible. They don't go all the way around but they're not supposed to, I put them hugging the bun either on the top or bottom.

I'm interested in any more/different information anyone has on these, it's hard to learn that much about Kanzashi as the sources are in Japanese, which I can't read....sob.

Wow Dorothy that's a really nice collection. I especially like the (Japanese?) comb in the box.

I got this comb for a steal today on eBay, can anyone date it for me? The listing didn't say much about it other than that it's got a pearly finish like lucite...

I guess my last post to you, Faellen, didn't post. Huh. Anyway, nice combs.... dated from approximately 1925 or so. That finish is called a moire finish (without the grave mark on moire and grave). Which means, the finish is a bit curvey and curley.
Keep out of direct sunlight; even temperatured room; never, EVER store in anything plastic. Always make sure it has a good supply of oxygen. Isolate it for 3 months from other objects also made of celluloid to hopefully prevent an outbreak of the "virus". Great find; lovely comb. I bought a new comb this afternoon from Israel. A vintage/antique hair comb of french ivory or otherwise, known as celluloid.

There is an antique shop here in WI that I pop in to occasionally that has at least ten of the celluloid big "fan" looking combs. They aren't my cup of tea, but if any of you are in State it'd be worth a look for you.

http://i1247.photobucket.com/albums/gg632/neko_kawaii_hair/_DSC9134_zpsb1c6d91f.jpg
It is stamped "mexico" and "silver" on the back. (Made for tourists given the English spelling of silver?) I've found a couple other examples with twisted tines like this that are described as Native American.

A friend of mine has the same kind of hair combs, silver with twisting on the teeth. They're antique. People will sell anything under any name they can find to use.

I don't know what you mean, the juxtaposition of "antique" and "people will call it anything" confuses me. Can you say it a different way for me? :blossom:

First, there are Native American tribes that straddle the border so it could indeed be Native and made in Mexico, but it could also be a generic "western" or "southwestern" style which is heavily influenced by Mexican styles and thus made somewhere deeper in Mexico. And that is without going into native groups in Mexico also being Native American. Also, Native American arts can be antiques, but I don't know enough to recognize any differences between modern and antique except in the glaring examples of modern styles. I'm curious about the "silver" stamp being in English. There must be some date after which content was more commonly stamped, but is it common to use the English spelling or is that an indication that it was made for tourists?

Calaelen

Neko_Kawaii Hi That is a beautiful piece you have. It certainly looks antique and definitely Native American influenced to me. The Mexico Silver mark is an old one, which dates between 1920-1940 with older pieces often being marked in numbers to the 1000 in later years. 900 and 925 are newer marks. Writing the marks in English in no way means the piece was made for the tourist trade, as most Mexican silver even dating to the 19th century is written in English, though often the region is marked, this wasn't the standard until much later. Marks such as the Eagle didn't come into place until the late 40s.

This piece looks like the real deal to me, but you can easily test it with no chemicals (albeit in a way that sounds kinda yucky). You take the piece, put it in aluminum foil, and spit on it, ensuring it gets a good amount on it, then wrap completely in the foil and leave for several minutes, I usually leave it for 20..if it smells like sulfur(rotten eggs) after you have done this, it is real silver. You can then easily clean and dry it with no damage to the piece, and without taking off any of the resulting tarnish from age. (For resale, taking of the tarnish can lower the price by many degrees)

People on eBay sell under different names all the time. Antique hair combs; vintage hair combs; silver hair combs; native american indian hair combs, and have no real evidence of the history. All people's made hair combs of some kind or other. There's African hair combs which I have a few of. They're made from wood mostly with an body or face on top of the hair comb. They even make it out of bamboo sticks. It makes no sense really how it is worn in the hair really.

You have to look under everything and find a lot of stuff that isn't antique or vintage or a hair comb like you speak of.

But that's the way of eBay.
heidi w.
I wouldn't worry too much if this is real silver or not: it is real silver, that's for sure.

I think you can save a PPT file as a movie file. It's a while since I used powerpoint so I don't recall the details, but I'm fairly certain their used to be a 'movie' type option.

Hello all! I recently inherited this lovely comb:

http://i1103.photobucket.com/albums/g469/blackcatpictures1/photo1_zps189c578b.jpg (http://s1103.photobucket.com/user/blackcatpictures1/media/photo1_zps189c578b.jpg.html)

and was wondering if anyone had any thoughts as to the material, and the best way to clean and store it... I'm 99% sure it's some kind of plastic, but there's no lines from a mold. It's fairly bendy, and quite dirty. I want to wear it but it definitely needs to be cleaned first. I'm thinking diluted shampoo maybe?

Thanks in advance, sorry if this has already been covered somewhere and I missed it! >.<

Im going to revamp this old thread, i hope thats ok, dont want to start a new one. I found this vintage leather hair stick/slider in my mothers living room, it just barely holds all of my hair even though my hair isnt all that long but maybe its thicker than I thought. The stick cant hold it all. Im starting to already get a headache, so im thinking up do's arent for me... but this is my first hair toy ever .. so woo!!! lol

Currently, only Mexican items stamped 925 are silver- by law, non-silver items cannot bear that mark. They often use other markings like a misspelled word to mislead tourists.

I believe it's bakelite. From the 20's or 30's, the Art Deco era. I would use a non acidic oil to clean it with. Not Olive oil as it's very acidic.
