View Full Version : How to use hair sticks on TB length fine hair?

I've looked up articles on LHC and how-to videos on you tube, but still can't get it to work without feeling that I'm breaking strands of hair trying to get the hair stick to.. well.. stick!

I want to do it loose without making a pony tail first and without using anything else to keep my hair up and in place.

Does anyone with long fine hair use just a hair stick to keep your hair up? How do you do it?

Ty!

Yes!

My hair is now past tailbone and very fine with fairytail ends. However, I can still make it stay up with just one stick, provided I choose the right updo(s).

These are my favourites, because they're quick and easy and work every time.

1. The most "sturdy" updo, without being tight, is Harpgal's Pinless Bun I just looked through the Articles section, but couldn't find the directions for it. I know it was on the old boards, but perhaps it hasn't been reposted since the crash.
Found it! Here's the link: http://archive.longhaircommunity.com/showthread.php?t=71774

2. The Wrapped Bun. You can find the instructions here in the Articles section:
http://forums.longhaircommunity.com/vbjournal.php?do=article&articleid=31

3. The Lazy Bun. Instructions here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Veoz2zoXcrE

Apart from that, I can only urge you to look through the updo part of the Articles section and try as many of them as possible to see which ones work for you.

There are also many other sites that have updo instructions for styles using a hairstick. Check out the www.dressytresses.com or do a search. There are also loads of instructional videos on YouTube, if you know how to do a search there. Unfortunately I don't, so I can't help you regarding this.

As with most anything regarding hair and hairstyles, YMMV

Thanks Silverlox!

I've been wearing the same old, same old for the longest time. Need to update, though, to make better use of the new length.

I like the and the Nautilus bun (]Orchid wrap[/url) a lot myself. There's a new variation on how to do an infinity bun that's great too...

Hmmm... Having trouble with the net tonight....
You may have to look them up yourself...

I'm a F/ii, currently hip length. I have done a vide on the Nautilus Bun, using one stick to secure it - http://video.google.com/videoplay?docid=466690622319220011&ei=o-E4SeGhNoiG2gLn_sSiCQ&q=hypnotica&emb=1

My favourite is the swirly bun (http://www.network54.com/Forum/242462/thread/1084704126/The+Swirly+Bun). I have to use a stick to hold it but it works very well and is one of few buns I can hold with a stick. I generally find that buns with many loops like this one are easier for me to make secure with just one stick and putting the stick through the loops will probably reduce the feeling of breaking hairs.

I also want to add that there's a huge difference between sticks and sticks. I have some simple wood sticks that I don't like very much, because I fell that they're just not smooth enough even if I've tried to sand them myself. They are of the type you can buy by the dozen from ebay for example and used by many who make simple beaded sticks. My favourite wood sticks are made by Graydog, they're so smooth and nice, they sure won't break any hairs. I also like good quality metal sticks.

If you need considerable force to push the stick into your hair you make the bun too tight. Fine hair often compacts really well. Starting out more loosely might help.

Thanks everyone for your tips and videos! After much struggling I am finally able to hold up a swirly bun with two hair sticks :joy:

I haven't had much success with other styles or a single hair stick though. For some reason it still keeps catching and pulling on hairs :/ I hope that after I've mastered this style I'll have a better idea of how to make the others work!

Thanks for this post! I just got my first hair stick (wood) and I've been trying to figure out styles. I decided to bling it up thanks to Hypnotica's beaded stick and made a bead design of my own. :) When my camera batteries re-charge, I'll take a photo.

I only have a couple of cheap, plastic hairsticks to practice with and I still can't get it. I even lost one today because it just fell out of my bun and I didn't know it. So, now I'm just working with one cheap, plastic stick.

Is it possible that some hair is just too fine or limpy for a hairstick to properly secure? Or is it just the user?

All of the above. Cheap plastic sticks don't hold very well, and some buns work better with sticks than others. But my hair also spits things out and if I use sticks I have to redo it every two hours or so because it's really slippery and loosens itself and then falls down.
