In the show "californication" (pretty adult show...) their is a wedding. I tried to make the brides hair style. It's not exact, but it's pretty close.

http://www.clevver.com/tv/videof/209997/californication-video-clip-the-wedding.html

There's a clip!

Mine comes out a fluffy folded-braid type thing.

Step one: a high pony tail.
http://i34.photobucket.com/albums/d112/elainehali/1-3.jpg

Step two: Make a "fluffy braid" I'm showing on a pony of fake hair which I practiced braids on. It's easier to take pics and see!
http://i34.photobucket.com/albums/d112/elainehali/2-3.jpg
The fluffy braid requires you braid very tightly for a few inches.

http://i34.photobucket.com/albums/d112/elainehali/3-3.jpg
Then to make it "fluffy" take the sides of the braid and pull up and outward. If you only braid a few inches at a time the unbraided hair should give a little and create the "fluff" effect.
http://i34.photobucket.com/albums/d112/elainehali/4-3.jpg
Make sure to get both sides. also in this particular style I think it looks better if the top of the braid is wider and more fluffy than the bottom part.
http://i34.photobucket.com/albums/d112/elainehali/6-3.jpg
Tie the fluffy braid off at shoulder height.

Step three: For longer hair double the braid tassle back. Now that I think about it you could just braid ALL the hair xD lol! I over-look funny stuff sometimes! This time I just took up tassle by not pulling it though all the way.
http://i34.photobucket.com/albums/d112/elainehali/7-3.jpg

Step 4 Cover the ponytail elastic by pinning the braid to your head starting ABOVE the elastic.
http://i34.photobucket.com/albums/d112/elainehali/8-3.jpg

Step 5: Pin the bottom of the fluffy braid at the nape of the neck.
http://i34.photobucket.com/albums/d112/elainehali/9-3.jpg

Step 6:
To keep tassle from poking out, pin the braid to your head at the sides.
http://i34.photobucket.com/albums/d112/elainehali/10.jpg

Sooo my version is a little bigger than in the show, but I have more hair.

http://i34.photobucket.com/albums/d112/elainehali/11.jpg

Obviously if you make the briad less fluffy your finished updo will be less huge.

It looks amazing with your thick hair! I might try it some day but I'm afraid it won't looks as impressive as yours... BTW the video didn't work for me: the page opened and all but there were no video there, maybe it's my ad blocker or something.

Okey here's my version:

http://i219.photobucket.com/albums/cc33/LingonberryMist/Hiukset/20081202008_muoks.jpg

My hair is APL length and I would say that's a minimum to this style, it eats a lot of length! Mine looks more like bun than your longer braid, but I like it still! I'm positively suprised how the fluffing the braid made it look thick! I will add that to my hair tricks for sure from now on! :D

Elainehali, I make the same thing sometimes. It's just that I make a lower braid, then flip it UP and pin it. Nice pics BTW ;)

I'm excited about trying this when I get home. It looks so great.

Sorry if this is clarified in the photos, but I have some questions.

Are you covering the first (ponytail) elastic by pinning the braid above it? Or did you mean hide the second (braid) elastic by attaching it to your head and tucking the rest under? Is the first ponytail elastic hidden at all?

Also, what pins are you using to attach the braid to your head?

Sorry! I'm a bit of an updo newbie.

You're covering the first pony tail elastic by pinning the braid above it. You adjust the braid by taking the first two inches of the braid and pinning them above the elastic that starts the pony tail. This hides the first elastic.

To hide the second elastic (at the bottom of the braid) you fold the braid under and pin so that the elastic is hidden.

I use the large bobby pins that are usually called "curler pins" or something similar. These work the best for me because they are longer (about 3 inches). However I'm sure that smaller bobby pins would work; you might have to use more of them.

Wow - How cool is that?!! And I think I might even be able to do it, though I was scratching my head (ooops, gotta watch the scalp now that it's winter....) with the pinning above the elastic and then somewhere else. But mostly I think I could figure it out! ;o)

Thanks so much for taking the time to share this with us. It should be kept as an article for easy access!

Oh wow--you've made me very happy with this!! I did it last night and it was beautiful! And I was having such a crappy day. Thanks!

You and I have the same thickness and similar length--bangs and all. The only tricky part was pulling the braid up and pinning at the crown. My hair is so heavy that it took several tries. My hair is so slippery that I didn't need to do anything to make it puffy--it loosens up on its own. It was so easy, and I'm gonna love wearing it.

That looks gorgeous on you! I just tried it (braiding out to the end as you suggested), but I didn't fluffify the top of the braid enough, and it pretty much just looks like a regular braid that's folded and pinned to my head. Darn. I'll try again sometime, because I think it's really pretty in your pics.

Stumbled across this thread a couple weeks ago and absolutely fell in love with this style. Finally got round to having a go tonight... can't say it's turned out too well. Kind of lacking in volume. But I love how it *could* look and I'm definitely going to keep practising.

Anyway. Photos...

I tried this, and it looked awesome except where my fringe poked out of the first loop and stuck up vertically when I pinned it over the band.

Conslusion: Either I need to wait a year or so for it to grow a whole lot, or I need to work out something else to solve it. Any ideas?

Such a great easy to follow tutorial, and ever so pretty!

I remember fluffy braids being very popular in the late 60's when I was a young'un. One of my grade school teachers had exactly that style, but she took a small section of hair and wrapped the base of her fluffy braid to cover the first elastic used to secure the ponytail. It's beautiful, and thanks for the clear instructions
