I came across something called a cage braid. There's a small thumb nail, but no instructions.

I decided I'd give it a shot and come up with some instructions for it. This ones kinda tricky. I looks cool, but takes a little patience.

http://i34.photobucket.com/albums/d112/elainehali/1-2.jpg

Step one: grab the front section of hair in a triangular shape. (as if you were going to start a french braid)

http://i34.photobucket.com/albums/d112/elainehali/2-2.jpg
Step two: braid the section for a few inches. Clip it so that it doesn't undo it's self.

http://i34.photobucket.com/albums/d112/elainehali/3-2.jpg
Step Three: take a small section on either side of the center section. Twist it slightly to keep it together as one strand. Maybe a little aloe gel to keep it sleek.

Step four. clip the new strand with the braid at the back of your head.

Step five: Do the same thing to the other side. (repeat Step Three and Four for the other side.)

http://i34.photobucket.com/albums/d112/elainehali/4-2.jpg
Step 6: Use a hair friendly small elastic (I use tiny hair friendly rubber bands) to join the two temple sections to the middle section. After joining the hair together braid for a few inches again.

http://i34.photobucket.com/albums/d112/elainehali/5-2.jpg
Step Seven: Hopefully the pattern is clear now. Take two more side sections and join it to the middle braided section. Tie the hair off with an elastic and braid a few more inches.

http://i34.photobucket.com/albums/d112/elainehali/6-2.jpg
Step Eight: The third strand section comes from behind the ear.

http://i34.photobucket.com/albums/d112/elainehali/7-2.jpg
Step Nine: Keep twisting and joining sections from the side to the braid.

http://i34.photobucket.com/albums/d112/elainehali/8-2.jpg
This is what It looks like from the side.

http://i34.photobucket.com/albums/d112/elainehali/9-2.jpg
If you decide to do 4 levels like I did. The last stands of hair added to the braid come from the nape of the neck. It's important to not pull them too tightly when incorporating them into the braid.

I finished my style off with some velcro stones. (the white things)

These pics are from my first attempt. (I'm pretty skilled with doing stuff behind my head apparently).

Soooo someone should test it out and tell me where I could make steps more clear. I'd like to add this to the articles when I'm sure it makes sense. :eyebrows:

Pretty enough for a wedding; well done. I don't do any clipping in my cage braid. I alternate adding extra hair from near my face (french style) with regular plaiting.

That's awesome! I've done something similar on a friend of mine, but I do it like spidermom does here by adding sections in from near the face french-style. It's very pretty.

I have a Karen Ribble braiding book that has this braid in it - and you did it exactly as it is described. Good job! I've done this style in the past and kept the braid going (without the side additions) all the way down. It's very fun because you get the hair pulled away from your face, while still having it long in the back, and the fun feeling of a braid swinging. It's like 3 hairstyles in one.

Oh that's so nice! I'm going to try it this weekend and take a pic!

I also want to do the "cage" style braid that I did for my friend's wedding - I think it was supposed to be called a "cage" braid but maybe I'm misremembering - it was a regular french braid but instead of braiding down the head as you go you hold you arms out in back of you (very uncomfortable, thank you!) as far as you can so the braid is very loose once you set it down. I'll do this and take a pic, too.

this is stunning.

I have problems doing even the simplest styles in mine because I find it really hard to keep my arms up for any length of time.

But even if I could I'm one of those people who are all fingers and thumbs and the very best I can manage is a basic three thread plait (braid)

People here are really clever with their hair, I'm constantly amazed :)

this is stunning.

I have problems doing even the simplest styles in mine because I find it really hard to keep my arms up for any length of time.

I'm thinking you could do this in stages. Work on one length of braid, and then clip it off and play on the computer for 15 minutes, then do another length of braid.

My cage won't stay in discrete strands, so I think I'm going to experiment with rope braiding the cage strands.

Oh yes, rope braids for the cage were the way to go for my super fine slippery hair. They aren't as evenly spaced as I would like, but I was doing it by the braille method, so considering, I'm happy with it.

That is lovely! I am not usually a fan of styles that let my hair (or a big part of it) hang down, since it - and especially the ends - is tangle prone. But it is definitely on the list of styles to do! :)

This is really pretty, and I'm going to try it on dd tomorrow (I'll be wearing a hat, so not much point in fixing mine that way...). I haven't heard of this one before, so thanks for posting!

I'll do this and take a pic, too.

My hair styling book for long hair calls that one a "draped french braid" and I love how it looks in their pic but never get it to work well for me (the extreme discomfort on the arms may contribute to that!).

Pictures?? Please?? I want to see it with rope braids!!

I don't know if this would work out for me (having a bit too much "texture", or shall we say frizzy curls) but I'm definitely going to give it a redhot go!! :D

I've been trying to do something like this with rope braids but it gets really frustrating because they don't want to stay in at the right spot. What I'd really like to do is start with a rope, then at the second addition switch to a four strand braid. But all the sections want to slip and be uneven! I'm adding such tiny sections that i don't think splitting each side into two before adding would be healthy for my hair.

I usually do it by adding the strands into the braid, just making a loose French braid with 2 or 3 braids between adding strands (if that makes sense). I never thought about connecting them any other way.

Going to have to do one again now. Thanks for posting this. The photos and instructions were all clear and easy to understand.
