My hair is a little past waist. I'm pretty sure I invented this updo. (as always I could be wrong and don't want to claim credit if it's been done.)

Step one: pony tail. Not high and not low.
http://i34.photobucket.com/albums/d112/elainehali/p1.jpg

After this pic I cleaned my mirror ick!

Step 2: Topsy tail. Hopefully everyone knows how to do this, cause I can't explain how...
http://i34.photobucket.com/albums/d112/elainehali/p2.jpg

Step 3: Braid the loose hair any way you know how. I made a 3 strand rope braid. (I wrote an article how to do multiple strand rope braids incase you're curious). Also leave the braid tassle somewhat long to create the peacock effect at the end.
http://i34.photobucket.com/albums/d112/elainehali/p3.jpg

Step 4: bring the braid tassle through the "hole" created in step 2.
http://i34.photobucket.com/albums/d112/elainehali/p4.jpg
Now the braid tassle should be sticking up and doing something fun like a peacock's tail.

If this updo is original I want it called a "peacock updo" I'll make it an article also if it's new.

Oh how cute! I'm gonna need about seven inches more of length to do it, but I love to be able to have another way to use my topsy tail!

Seriously shiny hair, btw!

I have never seen this style before but I have heard people refer to the style that you use the claw clip to hold a twisted updo with the loose ends fanning out at the top as a Peacock.

ahhhhh.. the name has been taken. Lame!

maybe..call it a topsy loop.

After all the braid does make a loop.

I don't have any good name suggestions, but it is a ver prett updo!

Would cockatoo updo sound silly? The pieces at the top remind me of the crested ones.

Why not "Peacock loop"?

And like you said, it incorporates the loop into the name.

This is so beautiful! I can't wait until my hair is long enough to do this!

You're so creative! First the deep waves technique and now this?

This is fantastic! You should post it on the Updo social group along with the pictures. I know it would be appreciated, and would keep it easily accessable. I plan to try it soon.

Hey thanks for this up do idea! I tried it but without the 3 rope braid, instead while my hair was in a ponytail - I sectioned it into 3 parts and did 3 separate braids then I used the 3 braids and braided them into one single braid and THEN I put it in the 'topsy tail' thingy. Here's a pic and you can check out more pics of different angles of it in my new album: Raven Mad Up dos.

I also like the hairstyle when you just leave the rope braid down! Got to try this, but my braid tassle looks sad!

I didn't know you could use more strands in a rope braid, got to try that too!

Oooooh, we have a winner.

My problem with most updos is that there are no ends sticking out. This one fullfills that extra nicely!

My other problem is that the hair tends to be compressed so much that i end up looking like i have less hair, not more. This also makes the hair look fuller, not thinner!

I personally found that my 'tail ends' need to be about 2 inches long to sit nicely. Any shorter and they do not weigh enough to stay inside the topsy tail - they just slip out. By pulling them over and using them as counterweight things stay where i put them. I could go with less tail if i used a hairstick, which is certainly a variation i'm willing to consider :)

Mahalo, elainehali!

ETA: sans stick, it is a no go. I got a block from the house and even with counterweight it fell out. Next time, the sticks shall be mandatory.

Still, fullness and wildness galore! So much better than the 100 % 'tucked in' bun styles!

I usually use a bobby pin to keep the taill end from slipping out, or a pretty clip.

Hairsticks would look cool to add a decorative element.

That is a lovely do! At first I thought that ivy leaf was a hairtoy, but it is from a hanging plant nearby, right? (o: In the last pic it looks like the green leaf is in your hair..........sooo pretty!!

I like the updo as a whole, but I really like the look of step #3!! Very pretty :agree:

As for a name, how about the "Looping Peacock Tail" or the "Peacock Loopy Tail"?

I don't remember seeing this in the articles. Did I miss it or was one never done? I think it's be popular if it was easier to find

n.b. I haven't actually checked the articles, I just don't remember seeing it.

ooh that's so pretty on you!

I would love to try it-my hair is 2 tone so the rope braid will look like a candycane [hopefully, if i do it right]:)

Funny, I didn't realize this thread was so old. Anyway, I just tried this and took some pics with my Blackberry in my cubicle. Thanksfully no one walked by or they'd really think I was crazy. :p

I love it though. One of the things I miss about not having shoulder length hair is the peacock twist. I just did a simple, three strand braid and secured with my hair stick. Excuse the office mess.
