Okay guys and gals, let's hear it...between these two choices...which one is better....and WHY?

Scrunchie.
The chances of your hair getting damaged by these are so very slim. I use them all the time, and they've never caused any problems.
Claw clips sometimes have rough edges and snags on my hair. Granted, I find claw clips a whole lot purtier than scrunchies, as I would never wear a scrunchie outside the house, but scrunchies have less possibilities for damage.

I use jaw clips. I have more problems with scrunchies - my hair is close to classic length and it is indeed a pain to drag it all through a scrunchie - I've also imagined that does more damage to it (rubbing the hair shaft the wrong way) than a hair clip would. But I don't know about that for sure.
I've never seen evidence of damage to my hair from a jaw clip. But I suppose this would also depend on hair type - mine is fine - someone who has thicker hair might find that it pulls down more from the weight or something.

Scrunchies are definitely better than claws, for me - I can't get claws big enough to hold my hair. But flexi-8s, hairsticks and hair forks are all more effective for updos. A scrunchie is only useful for the end of a braid or a sloppy bee-butt bun.

Neither, ick! But since I have to choose, I'd pick the scrunchie as an aid to doing Feye's self trim.

The scrunchies, though I hardly wear them outside the house.

Between a scrunchie and one big claw? The scrunchie. Though, if those were my only options, I'd rather just opt out.
I used to wear scrunchies every day, but right now I just can't. Either they are too tight and pull my scalp or too loose and fall out of my hair.
When my hair was at shoulder length I adored my giant claw clips. Twist, clip, go. But, I have out-grown them.

Scrunchie: safer, and can also be used in a greater variety of updos. I only use my claws for peacock twists or those buns-with-tails-sticking-out-updos.

Scrunchie. I have yet to find a claw clip that will fit around my hair in a ponytail, never mind hold it UP.

Scrunchie for me, my hair never stays put in a claw clip and it keeps going sideways.

Okay, hopefully I will offend all equally with the following statement--I used to think scrunchies were the tackiest things in the world (although in the late eighties/early nineties I wore them every day and made my own), but after a decade of looking at claw clips on every "mom cut" head in the county, I am now pledging to revive the scrunchie, and in the new year, I am going to start making my own and maybe even selling them. I guess I am torn and have a love/hate relationship with both.
You know what I don't like about the clips is that I can only pull my hair half up with them (too thick), and they break, and the metal spring is exposed. I do like the baby ones. Scrunchies are soft and pretty, and they don't leave a crease in my (straight) hair when I take them out. You can wrap them around a bun--what's not to love? Maybe there's a place for both in the world.

I have both but I don't wear them outside the house :p
My night bun, oil bun, deep treatment bun and damp but really really DAMP bun deserve the scrunchie. My henna process head deserves the clawclip trio holding the hair.
For updos? No way. Flexis (just now a dragonfly with purple beads in a half up) Ficcares and scroos are my everyday :cheese:
If I have to choose? I'll stay in bed. With a scrunchie.

In terms of utility I prefer a scrunchie, though claw clips are certainly prettier.

Two claws on either side of my bun, down low. Never sticking
out of the back of my head like a doorknob.
The two claw thing has been an ever-present thing for me. It is
the easiest, most secure, safest way to wear my hair, even when damp.
It is basically a figure eight bun, only unfolded and laid against the
back of my head. If I twist my hair a little bit tighter, there are fewer
coils to contend with, resulting in a neater 8.
I love lovely scrunchies, too, and do wear them. Of course, I have grown up
scrunchies, nothing childish or goofy looking. You'd be surprised at the
pretty scrunchies one can find online. I can only wear them when I'm having
a completely lazy day, or an event that doesn't require much movement,
or it ends up in a tangled messy disaster. Ugh!
So I guess both answers work, at least for my hair.

Scrunchies! I know they're fashion no-no's or whatever, but I'm not one to follow the trends or care if I'm out of date. I won't wear the big puffy ones, though (unless I'm at home). They make thinner ones now in neutral colors. I always feel like plain hair bands grip my hair too tightly. I like the look of claw clips, but my hair is so fine and slippery that they don't hold my hair well.

Thanks for contributing everybody... so far
Scrunchies: 11
Claw: 1 (with some honourable mentions)
Neither: 1
Both: 2
Interesting...I had a hairdresser tell me a couple of years ago to use claws rather than scrunchies because the scrunchies caused more breakage. Any thoughts on that?

Best hair tie I'd have to go with scrunchie. It's the only one to me that fits in that category. I wear one every night to secure my nightly braid while I sleep. It's a nice material that's friction free, so I use it over and over as it's the least dangerous to my hair. During the day, though, should I have my hair in a standard braid, I will always secure it with a claw clip. It's less damaging to my ends than a tight little hair tie and works just fine besides causing the end to angle a bit (I make sure one part of the claw goes through some part of the braid itself so it won't slide out over time).

I don't like scrunchies but I have one that I use at night. Claw clips I got bored when my hair was shorter, I can't make myself wear them again. So I would say neither for me, but I like claws better than scrunchies.

although I'll choose the claw :)

I have to say for my thin fine hair the claw clips hold it in without sliding back out again. The ones with six prongs total work best. Cause less damage to my hair than my ficcare maximas, ironically.
Scrunchie works only for me to gently hold a sleeping braid or to do a Feye's Self Trim. Otherwise to avoid them slipping out I have to double them over so many times I might as well have an elastic in there.

A handful of tiny claw clips hold a bun up very comfortably and like a rock! For a lazy, around the house ponytail, I use a scrunchie, but I don't find them useful for anything else.
So, tiny claw clips win. I hate the big ones.

I like both. Lately I have been wearing a claw clip and it works nicely with my hair, I've never had it pull or snag on my hair. Scrunchies great for ponytails... although I only wear them right before I go to bed lol.

Scrunchie. Claws almost invariably manage to pull my scalp hair, and I don't like that. I've got an octopus clip somewhere that seems alright, but I still tend to find them a little tacky-looking.
Of course, as I write this, I have my braid secured with an itty bitty jaw clip. Seems to work great in that application, and it has the added bonus of preventing you from catching the braid between your back and a chair.

I used to love the medium sized claw clips when my hair was shorter. But now they won't hold it so I mostly use sticks and forks. I love my big velvet scrunchies for around the house. They are very soft so they don't catch on my hair at all and keep my hair out of my way while I am doing housework or something. I occasionally wear them out (the smaller ones) to hold a messy bun since a single elastic gets caught in my hair much worse. The only claws I use now are sometimes to hold a halfup.

I prefer claws, now that my hair is long enough to stay back in one - before that I used metal-free elastics. I can really see all the breakage caused by the elastics now that my hair is getting longer!

scrunchie by far. It's safer, all purpose and comes in fashionable styles and colors! :D Scrunchies can be used for anything/everything. Where as a claw can't. I can't ride with a claw holding my hair, so I find claws have more limitations. :)

A claw hurts and pulls on my hairstrands. And you can't do braids without a scrunchie to hold them :)

Well I've gone through my fazes with both...Since I can't fit my hair very well into a claw clip anymore, they're kind of out. And I usually only use scrunchies for buns and I can't see to get a bun to stay in my hair anymore! And then the scrunchie is either too loose or too tight. :(
I'm in love with my hair sticks at the moment. :)

I hate the big claws, but I use the small ones almost daily. I love the up and twists! Most times I leave a bit of my hair sticking up and then back, looks pretty I think, and very convenient. I will be saddened when I can't wear those any longer.

claws. Scrunchies fall out. For sleep 'dos, claws preserve and encourage my wave; scrunchies either fall out or give me weird kinks.
And I would MUCH sooner wear a claw out of the house than a scrunchie!

There is no claw clip made (that I've been able to find) which will hold up all of my hair. It's fine and thin, but there's a lot of length.
I have about 50 different scrunchies, in lots of colors and in fabrics ranging from velvet to silk to knit to crotcheted. I wouldn't say that I'd never wear a scrunchie in public, because I do. There are so many different kinds - my sis the seamstress can make me any kind to match any outfit. They do tend to be more on the casual side just because of what they are, though, so if I do wear them out and about it's usually on a weekend, and in a high, looped scrunchie bun. Though I do I have a pretty black lacy one and a couple of velvet ones that I loop around the outside of a cinnabun on occasion to dress it up.
Also, scrunchies are the only thing that will hold my hair up in a topknot when I am sleeping. I toss and turn from side to side all night long, and often pull the covers over my head if I'm cold, so nothing else will keep it up and safely out of tangles' way.
That said, if anyone finds a super duper big claw clip that will conform correctly to the shape of a head and securely hold up 45"+ of looped/folded hair, I'd love to hear about it.

They're just cheapies from Wal-mart but they do the job for me, I have to wear two of them, one to secure the bun in the front and one to secure the back. They don't bother my head and they keep my bun in place all day and night long.
I don't usually wear them out in public like this because they are reminiscent of an iron maiden for my hair ... :D

I do dearly love my scrunchies, but all they are good for is putting my hair up in a ponytail, so I would have to say claw clips are better. There are a lot more styles I can do with claw clips depending on the size of the claws, and the styles are more tidy and presentable than a scrunchie ponytail.
But I wish they had them in more colors...you can find or make scrunchies in any color you want!

I've never found a claw clip that didn't get tangled into my hair, so I've stopped trying to use them.
I wear a scrunchie almost every day, because they do a good job holding in all the uneven bits at the end of my braid and don't seem to do as much damage as a skinny hairtie. Reading this thread has made me wonder if I'm committing some kind of huge fashion no-no, though. I mean, I can see where a huge, fluffy, bright pink thing might be a bit tacky in a formal setting, but I can't imagine the type I wear causing any offense:
http://i30.photobucket.com/albums/c330/nienna42/IMG_1727.jpg
See it there at the bottom of the braid? Is that really so bad? :( Not that I'm likely to stop wearing scrunchies just because other people think they're tacky, but I'm curious anyway.

December 23rd, 2008, 03:21 PM
Nienna42, I think scrunchies are perfectly acceptable except in the most formal of settings, or if you are expected to dress in business suits at the office. Even then, though, I've been known to use scrunchies as part of my ensemble if they are lacy or dressy enough. It depends upon how you are using them - for instance, to hold a ponytail? Not a dressy hairstyle, but fine when going shopping, IMO. Perhaps they are not considered "in style", but, eh, I've never been a slave to fashion.

I think scrunchies would be less damaging. So long as they are the cloth ones not the rubber bandy tight feeling ones.

I'd say scrunchie. I rarely use any of those any way. But it does take forever sometimes to put my hair up with a claw so that it feels perfectly comfortable to the scalp. I usually only wear it when washing my hair to secure it after I put the 2nd C and get it out of the way as I do the other shower duties.

A pair of claw clips are best. They're the only things that will hold up my hair. Scrunchies work for ponytails and braids, I guess, but they're far too damaging to use with fine, wavy hair, especially when you have a lot of it to pull through the scrunchie.

Well, I guess you do learn something new every day. I'm with you about comfort/protection...er...comfort even more than protection!!!! Tons of people where I live wear both. I had a hairdresser tell me a couple of years ago I had a lot of breakage from wearing ponytails though (I never used bad elastics or anything, but my hair was fryed from dyeing and maybe I pulled them too tight? I was telling a friend what she said, and my friend told me that her hairdresser recommended claw clips instead. I just want to find out which one is less damaging, because I actually find them equally as comfortable.

Claws.:cheese: 2.5" hand finished Paris Mode/France Luxe ones. They can hold a ponytail, tie off the end of a braid, hold a number of updos and half ups without the discomfort of pins or ties. I've found the 2.5" to be the best size for me. Larger feels too much and the really small ones don't hold as well with only one. I sometimes use two for extra security or to distribute the weight/shape a 'do a little more.
ETA: The major problem with them is that the springs keep breaking after a year or two. My poor Dad is now an expert at replacing springs.
Scrunchies always brought hair out with them when removed and I found unpleasant to use. I have been looking at them again lately, but have trouble bringing myself to buy one.

Scrunchy you can get away with wearing it to bed and leaving it till it either falls out or you take it out in the morning to shower/put up hair. Though, if you are working out - scrunchies don't hold tight like the ruber-bandless hair ties do...you will find yourself stopping every 5 min or so - so that you can put it back up.
Claws are great if you have the patience and don't want to mess up your hair too much. I say that you have to have patience with claws cause some can dig into your scalp or rub against and for me, always tends to droop to the left or right side and I find that I have to constantly keep putting it back up. but that's because my hair is so thick and long. Also, if you decide to leave your hair down after like the 10th time of taking it out and trying to put it back up - you are left deciding what, where and how you are going to put it or keep it from breaking if you toss it in a bag or a purse with no bottom...lol.

As much as a fashion faux pas as it is, I LOVE scrunchies (only silk or satin though). I love that you can do a ponytail or bun , as long as it isnt' too tight, and not get that hair crease that you get with other hair ties.

Scrunchie for sure! I like the fact that they don't pull my hair. My curls are super thick, so the only way that I can wear a ponytail is with a scrunchie, satin to be specific. They are lifesavers for me.

What? I can only have one of them? :blueeek:
But.. I use both, for different things.
A scrunchie is more comfortable to sleep on, because it doesn't dent my head when I lie on it.
While a claw clip is much better to wear to the beach, swimming, in the shower or tub, as it doesn't get soaked and droopy like a wet scrunchie does.
If I really had to choose one or the other, I'd be in big trouble! :hmm:
Unlike some of my esteemed fellow members here, I have no problem going out in public wearing a scrunchie, or a claw clip. You see, I have decided that I'm a Lady, thus everything I wear automatically becomes very ladylike, if for no other reason than I'm the one wearing it. :p As long as it matches my outfit, of course. All my claw clips and scrunchies are in solid colours, most of them very discreet colours, like black, grey, purple or fuchsia. Most scrunchies are velvet, as the satin ones tend to slide out.
Having said that, I have to admit that I mostly wear sticks or forks. I still keep my old scrunchies and claw clips around, though, and they still get some wear.

If you have thick hair, I really recommend the large scunci hair ties. I've been using them for years. They don't have that little metal bit in the middle. They have joined the two ends with some kind of wizardry instead so it doesn't get caught in your hair when you pull it out. They also last quite a long time too compared with ties with the metal clips.

:applause Hilarious!! :D

:couch::stirpot: THAT'S IT!!! Wizardry!!! I wonder if that's the secret of the Caramilk Bar too!!! :chocolate:

Okay, now that my hair is getting longer, I'm finding it easier to use a claw...and it's wayyyyy more convenient!

Scrunchie - because I tend to break any claws I own.

Cloth scrunchie. Never tears or breaks any hair. Never gets stuck. Never breaks.

I think a scrunchie is better than a claw

I like scrunchies (softer than claws of course). My favorites are satins, velvets or smooth cottons.

I use scrunchies because the claw is not comfortable & hurts my head.

I'll use a scrunchie when I don't feel like doing my hair.I'll have to go with claw big claw clips because I am more used to them and my hair looks better in them.I've never had a problem with them pulling on my hair

I really like claws, myself, if I were to choose between the two. Scrunchies slip out of my hair, where claws hold firm most of the day (since I use them with braids). I have way more than enough hair between my head and the claw to avoid pain. :D
My FIRST choice would be, of course, hair sticks! ;)

I'd rather use a claw than a scrunchie.
Scrunchies ARE comfortable and do their jobs...I just think they look too high school-ey for me to wear around. :o I feel like a kid with one on.

What if I love and use them both?

I like scrunchies best for me. I would use claws more often if my hair was a bit thicker. Only
use the baby claws/clips when I want to pull my hair off of my face.

Scrunchies pull my hair. I preffer hair claws, but not all shapes are good for me. Too complicated to explain... some really do pull a lot of hair out. I preffer those with a narrow shape and bent teeth that actually overlap.

Claw!
I used to wear scrunchie buns all the time when my hair was shorter, now that my hair is almost waist length, it's impossible to bun with scrunchies unless I use 2 or 3. I also find my hair is more knotted with the scruncies. I couldn't wear claws because they are made for short thin hair, but then my friend gave me a really pretty monster sized one that actually holds my hair unless it is folded on it self. Its a nice way to quickly twist my hair up and go, on the wash days when it is super slippery.

I love my claw clips! I think I love them over scrunchies. I have a gigantic one to hold my peacock twist (doubly folded) and it's wonderful. My hair is between hip & TBL, BTW.

I use a scrunchie every day and have had no problems from it.
I'm not a fan of clips, they're just not something that works well with my hair. It always tends to slip out for some reason.

I loved scrunchies when I was little, but now I prefer claw clips. Clips just stay better in my hair, I can't find good scrunchies anywhere (probably I should try etsy next).

Scrunchies. Less damage and less pulling on the roots, I guess. I also love the look of a good cinnabun or messy bun encircled with some nice, frilly satin fabric...:o
I admit that a good Octopus clip can give a better hold. I found crappy clips and good clips, so I can't generalize... but even the biggest I've found can't hold an entire bun, not even on my fine not-even-BSL hair, so they became less useful after APL.

I used to always wear this big octopus clip that I 've had around my house, like every day. That was my easy updo for me. But lately, I find that when I put it up, after a few hours, my scalp hurts like right where it's been sitting. I dont' understand why now, if I used to always use it?? (the same exact one) Is that because I have less hair, (more layers), I used to like it because of my thick hair, it would hold it taut. And it still stays tight, but it just starts hurting my scalp/hairs closest to the scalp. I don't get what could've changed, or what causes claws to hurt the scalp. It's not because it's pulling hairs. I dont get it.

I use scrunchies daily although they do slide out of my hair somewhat after a while. Claws provide good hold generally (especially the ones with the little rubber coated bits on the inside)but I tend to get 2 hairs that are pulling somehow and then I have to redo the whole thing. My hair is pretty slippery and straight so it likes to reject everything. :)

I was going through this thread and it seems like in 2009 there was a lot of scrunchie back lash. They must have come back in style because I see them all of the time.
So my answer is scrunchie but I love the way a jaw clip looks. I have so many pretty ones but I can't stand the way they feel when I put my head back against a chair or when I am driving. Don't they dig into your scalp??? I would love to wear them, but I hate they way they feel.

I find I'm using scrunchies more than claw clips lately, but I don't know if the scrunchies are causing more damage for me than the claw clips....

Scrunchie. Even when I find a claw clip that holds all my hair, I can't put my head back.
I prefer Ficcare now to either.
Most often though, I do a faux crown braid that is really two French braids and I actually don't need any hair toy at all to hold it in place. Jsut tuck the ends in.
You know you can sew your own scrunchies.
