View Full Version : Luxury/High-end Product Directory

Hello! I'm back with a new project, collecting reviews/making a directory for luxury and high-end hair products!
Over the years I've occasionally picked up a travel size bottle of a luxury product just because I'm curious what the fuss is about, even though full size has never really been within my budget. I thought it could be interesting to start building a directory for short reviews of luxury products for anyone who is curious. It seems most of us on this platform do drugstore products for the most part so I thought a luxury thread could be interesting to see what the products are all about without necessarily having to try them out yourself...
Also, what "luxury" or "high-end" is might be different to each person depending on income, social background etc. etc. Everyone's opinion is welcome but please don't say like "OGX? That's NOT luxury!" You never know, you could make someone feel really self-conscious about it.
If you want, use the template below for your review.

Product: Balmain Paris Hair Couture Silk Perfume
Your hair type/hair concerns: fine, dense, tangly, weak wave pattern, low-porosity
Overall assessment: Highly fragranced serum. Makes my hair greasy. Very sweet fragrance. Personally not a fan of the fragrance.
Pros: lightweight, nice if you like sweet fragrance
Cons: not light enough for my hair, only basic benefits of any silicone serum
Score out of five: 2/5
Worth the price? No.

Product: Bumble & Bumble Thickening line - shampoo, condish, mask, pre-styler spray
Your hair type/hair concerns: fine, dense, tangly, weak wave pattern, low-porosity, at the time shoulder-length
Overall assessment: All of them at the same time? No difference than just the S + C. Spray with other products? No effect. Mask with other shampoo? Decent.
Pros: The mask was decently detangling and volumising, S + C decent volumising products
Cons: funky smell, saw no difference with the spray, not detangling enough at longer lengths for me
Score out of five: 2.5/5
Worth the price? The mask - Meh.

Overall assessment: Honestly the smell is amazing?! Does its job methinks, not sure how to gauge its effectiveness but my hair seems ok?
Pros: the smell omg, detangling effect on my hair, fine mist that sprays evenly
Cons: price point maybe if you use a lot of heat protectant but ok for me as I don't use a tonne

Product: Oribe Gold Lust line: Goldlust Repair & Restore Shampoo + Conditioner, Gold Lust Transformative Masque
Your hair type/hair concerns: fine, dense, tangly, weak wave pattern, low-porosity
Overall assessment: Only needed about two peasize dollops of shampoo for my entire scalp, rich lather, detangling but very lightweight shampoo and conditioner
Pros: a tiny bit goes a looong way, lightweight + detangling, nice fragrance
Cons: fragrance is very mild, and then the price point. Jeez.
- Fullsize 250 ml / 8.5 fl oz shampoo bottle 615 SEK / 55€ / 60$.
- Fullsize 200 ml / 6.5 fl oz conditioner 650 SEK / 58€ / 63$.
- Fullsize 150 ml / 5 fl oz masque 775 SEK / 70€ / 75$
Score out of five: 4/5
Worth the price? I mean... It's super nice and luxurious and I'll probably get like 25 washes out of a 75 ml travel size shampoo but full size is just not within my budget

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Product: Nuxe l'Huile Prodigeuse
Your hair type/hair concerns: very fine, thin, curly, tangly, low porosity, damaged ends
Overall assessment: i wasn't sure it was meant for hair at first, it looks luxurious, but i don't like the smell at all - too strong and feminine in a bad way, interferes with perfume. surprisingly it's silicone free
Pros: nice bottle?
Cons: smell, and honestly this felt the same as "cheaper" oils do in my hair, like jojoba, argan or even mineral oil, or a mixture of them. they tend to soak into my ends but make the hair right above them too greasy, which is exactly what happened with this oil. hard to find the balance between it doing nothing and weighing my hair down. it kind of made me think that silicone free hair oils have a limit in what they can do for fine hair. honestly, even without considering the price it's not worth it for me and i feel like this type of oil can be diy-able for cheap.
Worth the price? No
Product: Redken Extreme shampoo + Redken Extreme conditioner
Your hair type/hair concerns: very fine, thin, curly, tangly, low porosity, damaged ends
Overall assessment: this is meant to be a protein treatment, i read that a lot of people who like it use it a few times a month and not every wash. it's said to help hair that's damaged from bleach or heat treatments. it smells kind of sharp and salon-y but it's not too bothersome.
Pros: thoroughly cleans without drying out and a little goes a long way, makes hair softer but not frizzy. it also managed to make my velcro ends feel like normal hair!
Cons: only afterwards i realised i have protein sensitive hair so i don't have much use for this - so be mindful of that before you get a sample or buy the whole thing, it's not meant to be for everyone. it made my hair very soft and feathery without too much frizz or dryness but it also stretched out my curls (just in the middle), probably because of too much protein. however i can see how this is a great product for some!
Score out of five: 3,5/5
Worth the price? not for me but if you need protein this is worth it.
Product: Olaplex no. 3
Your hair type/hair concerns: very fine, thin, curly, tangly, low porosity, damaged ends (mechanical damage mostly)
Overall assessment: okay, everyone is raving about this one. it's said to actually fix your hair unlike everything else on the market, it doesn't moisturize but fixes damage. the bottle says to put it on your hair from root to end, but unless you bleach your hair you only need it on the actually damaged parts. i tried leaving it on from 10 mins to overnight. smells kind of unremarkable like hair product. there's a lot of fakes out there even on sites like amazon, so probably don't buy it second hand
Pros: it does make damaged hair feel alive and fixes velcro ends for some time. if you only use it on the ends, the bottle can last way longer so i recommend that.
Cons: theoretically the effect should be permanent (i think labmuffin said this) but in practice it lasts maybe 3 weeks until they're back where they were (maybe it's because mechanical damage makes bigger "cracks" in your hair that olaplex can fix and it works better on bleach damage but idk) (the official olaplex site for hairdressers says it lasts about a month too). it also makes the hair drier (that's where the horror stories of it damaging hair come from) so you should do a mask afterwards anyway. i know many people have this as their only high end product (because of the promise of it actually doing something) but honestly i feel like if you only splurge on one thing, get a good leave in conditioner, oil, or a good mask and you're better off. also don't buy the rest of the line (including olaplex 0) for damage repair, those don't have high enough concentration of the active chemical to do anything.
Score out of five: 4/5
Worth the price? No
Kerastase :
Premiere line - Nice lightweight products that left my hair feeling healthier with less frizz.
8H Magic Night Hair Serum: love it, but if you have very fine or oily hair, it's probably going to be too much. It leaves my fair feeling sooo soft and conditioned in the morning.
Masque Intense Regenerant Hair Mask :I thought this would be a replacement for their old Bain Chromatique line. I was wrong. Absolutely hated it. Didn't do much for my hair considering the price. Odd too because I remember liking it the first time I used it, but after that- nope.
Oribe:
Gold Lust Repair and Restore - Somehow got a sample of the shampoo and conditioner. Pretty sure I've tried it before though. No real opinion. Nothing special, to me at least. I wouldn't spend money on it.
Briogio:
Don't Despair, Repair Deep Conditioning Mask - One of my all time faves. Have been using this product on and off for years. It leaves my hair soft, conditioned and easy to detangle. Might be too much for fine hair.
Scalp Revival Micro-Exfoliating Shampoo - This is one of my all time favorite products. It feels so good and has such a nice clean minty smell. My scalp feels awesome after using this, just very clean. Good for any hair type.
Matcha + Apple Shampoo and Kale + Apple Conditioner - The best thing about these two are the smell. Other than that, they're your basic sulfate free shampoo and silicone free conditioner. I will say that they also leave my hair feeling very clean and soft. So maybe a little better than your basic drugstore brand sulfate/silicone free product. It's good for all hair types.
DryBar:
Detox Dry Shampoo - Hands down the best dry shampoo I've ever used. At least compared to every drug store brand, and all the IGK Dry shampoos. This product leaves your roots looking like you just washed your hair. I absolutely love it for the winter when I shampoo less and need something in between washes. You don't need to use a ton of it (unlike the other brands I've tried), a little works just fine.
The scent is nice but strong, that's the only thing that I dislike about it. But considering how well it works, it's not a deal breaker for me.
On The Rocks Clarifying Charcoal Shampoo - An excellent clarifying shampoo for those who don't want to use any kind of sulfates. It absolutely does the job. This along with Briogio's scalp revival are the only two clarifying shampoos I use (for at least 4-5 years now.) It's good for all hair types.
Alterna Caviar:
Anti-aging Replenishing Moisture Shampoo and Conditioner: The shampoo was terrible. It left my hair dry, ironic since it's supposed to be a moisture shampoo. The conditioner feels like a protein conditioner. It doesn't detangle, or leave hair soft, but it definitely left my hair healthier looking with less frizz, and a lot smoother. I would not recommend the shampoo at all, but if you have a lot of breakage, the conditioner can work.
Kiehl's:
Amino Acid Conditioner - Got this as a sample and liked it so much I bought a larger size. It's a protein conditioner, and will not really detangle. But it leaves my hair very healthy looking, hardly any frizz and feels soft. This is not really a daily conditioner, I use it once a week, once every two weeks, but it's a very good protein conditioner. One of my faves now.
I've tried a ton of other higher end shampoos/conditioners but it's too much to post. The ones I listed are my most recent, or love/hate products so remember the all very clearly.
Product: K18 Leave-In Molecular Repair Hair Mask
Your hair type/hair concerns: Fine, predominantly natural but photobleached and sometimes goes through a lot mechanically speaking.
Overall assessment: I can't really tell if it made any difference because my hair was already in a relatively healthy state, having recently cut up to hip from almost knee. But I didn't expect to see a world of difference anyway; I just wanted to give my hair a little extra reinforcement to hopefully somewhat make up for the rough treatment (worn loose when performing, and I mostly wash daily). I need to have faith with this product, lol.
Pros: A little goes a long way. Smells pleasant.
Cons: Doesn't necessarily make a visible difference in natural hair.
Score out of five: 3/5
Worth the price? Probably. I need very little (one pump for my entire length; more than that makes my hair feel tacky already) so it lasts me forever. On the other hand, someone with more damaged hair would probably notice more of a difference but also go through it faster.
Couldn't get along w/ Olaplex, BTW, neither did my mom; we both got flaky hair for some odd reason, and yes it's the "real deal" that we have here which is gosh, so very strange all of it. And I can't question the source because it's a hair shop, specialty, I wasn't about to risk getting it from ebay, and then this... I mean.
Anyway, quick question. What is "high end"? Anything over €10 per product, or what's the cut-off point, if there is one.
I mean, I last bought Novex masks, which comes to between €10-12 a big 1KG pot, so it's a lot per product. But per gram it's not even more expensive than a regular conditioner, it actually beats the price. Because that's €2.50-3 per 250ml, and that's amazing! Beats the price of a conditioner, for one, but even the price of a mask, for sure the price of a mask! And it's like 10x better at combating frizz (man it's amazing and you just need a small scoop).
And for the rest, I think, besides a Davines leave-in, that I do not remember the price of but is a high-end brand, no question, and a CHI serum, I actually don't even possess anything that's considered expensive or high-end. :o
I go through so many different products that I completely forgot to mention:
Living Proof: "Restore" shampoo and conditioner.
I've used them on and off over the years and really love these products. They made a big difference in how my hair looked and felt.
Unfortunately, I really dislike the smell. It's a bit too chemical like for me. But they are great products.
(I don't mention my hair type because it's listed under my avatar).
I didn't want to define it since I don't think I'm the expert on this :p and I imagine depending on one's circumstances, what's a luxury could vary from person to person :shrug: But for me personally I would say salon brands are high-end and luxury is like (what's to me a) crazy price point like Oribe
Product: Redken All Soft conditioner
Your hair type/hair concerns: very fine, thin, curly, tangly, low porosity, damaged ends
Overall assessment: this is a moisturizing conditioner aimed at all types of hair, it should smooth fine and nourish coarse hair. comes in a yellow/gold bottle. it smells better than most redken products i tried, but honestly they all smell like they mixed two good smells together and the result is kind of too... busy? this one is kind of pleasantly fruity with an "oily" smell that's similar to scented shoe polish. i like it though, i'm just wondering why do all of them smell kinda weird. bought a full bottle to use in place of a light hair mask as needed.
unlike most redken products, this one has only PEG silicone and therefore can be used with a low shampoo/cgm routine (it has isopropyl alcohol at a very low % where it isn't drying, probably to help the protein extracts)
Pros: it does what it says - my hair is really soft, the oil makes my curl pattern more defined, my hair dries faster and i found out that if i brush my curls after drying them, they come back which is pretty rare for a product to do. the smell doesn't linger after washing out. excellent conditioner and works much better than a lot of fine hair masks i've tried and i can see why it's a classic.
Cons: i have to be careful using it too close to the roots or my hair gets oily earlier
Product: K18 Hair Mask
Your hair type/hair concerns: 2c/M/ii/iii
Overall assessment: I have done some awful at home dye jobs on my hair. The longest parts of my hair have been bleached at least 7 times, within the span of a year. On top of bleached I used plenty of other dyes as well. I have finished my first full size bottle now!
Pros: It makes my hair feel soft. Visible results that just got better as I used it more. A little product goes a long way. Quick and easy to add to my wash day routine (easy day than waiting 10-20 minutes for most masks). My hair had stopped breaking off (seriously any pressure on a strand and they would snap off right in my hands)
Cons: Pricey
Product: Olaplex no. 7 Bonding Oil
Your hair type/hair concerns: very fine, thin, curly, tangly, low porosity, damaged ends
Overall assessment: it's a standard mix of silicone and natural oil (corn). super expensive for 30 ml. i've seen it recommended for fine to medium hair, it has a lot of great reviews everywhere. comes in a nice minimalistic bottle, has a slight pleasant "young" floral/fruity smell that disappears after putting it in the hair. it's yellow colored because of added dye (why?). it has the olaplex patented chemical but that's only marketing, as the oil/cones would prevent it from actually doing anything on the hair. there's so many fakes on amazon and second-hand sites that it makes buying it kind of tricky
Pros: it's a decent hair oil, a little goes a long way. the smell is nice and i really like how the bottle looks and that it's practical. i had the best results when i put it into wet hair. the texture is thin and spreadable
Cons: it's good but not great. honestly i think the 5 star reviews come from people not having tried many alternatives at this price point... it's a bit too heavy on the natural oil, so it's very easy to overdo it and just make your hair greasy. it doesn't tame frizz all that well. the most accurate way to describe it would be coconut/sunflower oil mixed with some silicone - those oils tend to make my ends kind of hard/crunchy and that's what the olaplex oil does to my hair. it's better than the drugstore ones i've tried, but kind of lacking among the expensive ones. i was afraid i got a fake because of the performance but then i had a chance to try it in store and it's the real deal.
if you like natural oils on your ends you might like this better but then... you could just use coconut mixed with some good silicone hair oil and save your money. or maybe it's better suited towards medium hair as opposed to fine?
EDIT after a week: i tried this on my sister's hair, who has fine TBL hair that's not as wispy as mine and feels/behaves more "normal" and it works way better on hers, makes it a bit softer in a weightless way and most importantly not crunchy like it does for me. it's ultimately a different product than shu uemura or kerastase - it's not supposed to work for frizz and i think the goal with this oil is for it to be competely invisible. still not worth it in my opinion though, could be dupe-able with almond oil and some silicone serum to spread it.
Product: Shu Uemura Essence Absolue Oil
Your hair type/hair concerns: very fine, thin, curly, tangly, low porosity, damaged ends
Overall assessment: a lightweight hair oil that's a mix of silicone with camelia oil (that's the only natural oil in it). should work for all hair types. minimalist ingredients list. it's probably the most expensive cosmetic product i'll ever own per bottle (150 ml), but per mililiter it's less expensive than olaplex or kerastase. the consistency is thicker than the olaplex one but it's more spreadable. the bottle has a light tea color but the oil itself is colorless. it smells really good, like a real, realistic flower without any perfumey-ness. it's a part of loreal like kerastase is, and is also made in spain - i read it's similar to the kerastase elixir but it should be a bit lighter. the japanese brand and aesthetics is just marketing.
Pros: the smell is really wonderful - i usually prefer unscented products but with this one, i'm sad it doesn't linger a bit more. it's impossible to overdo it, even if you completely saturated fine hair with it it wouldn't look greasy. makes my ends feel "alive" and repaired. tames frizz and gives shine, on days when i don't wash my hair it's my only styling product. the bottle looks elegant. really love this oil and it might be a holy grail for me.
edit: forgot to mention that i quit CGM after 7 years because of this oil alone.
Cons: the only con is that it sort of disappears after a day, i think that's what you pay for the lightweight effect. i read the kerastase should be better in this aspect but might have other downsides, i might try that one once i run out of the oils i own, but something tells me i'll be repurchasing this one.
Overall assessment: The best serum on the market. The blend of silicones and oils seems to be perfectly balanced, leaving my hair soft and easy to comb.
Cons: The cost but heyho, you get what you pay for.
