View Full Version : Herbal dyes and chlorine?

Well, have just bought myself a swimming cap since I'm going to take up swimming again, which just now reminded me of that one time when I was 12ish and visited a local bathhouse.
Had right before that visit dyed my hair with semi-permanent (chemical) color, which was supposed to last for at least 28 washes, and after about 1-3 hrs of bath time, I noticed that my hair looked like it had stripes(!) in it.
And yeah, most of the color had washed off due to the chlorine.
And this made me think, "how about herbal dyes?", like henna is rather hard to get rid off, so if taking a swim in a pool, will my burgundy get some weird hues/miscoloration? :hmm:
What do you guys think?

I went swimming in a chlorine pool a couple of times when I still had Henna in my hair. I think I never spend that much time in the water (more like 45 minutes) but never noticed any fading or discoloration. I grew out my Henna, there was def no removing it lol so I think it should be fine :) I think the swimming cap is still a great idea though because chlorine can be drying:)

Hmm, yes, that does make sense.
Ah, good thing you mentioned the drying bit part, because I definitely do not want my hair to get any drier than it already is. :p

Henna is essentially bulletproof XD You're fine to swim in it. The worst that will happen is it'll fade weaker colors (like the golds you get from senna), or a greenish cast from the chlorine on yellow hair (easily removed with a chelating rinse or shampoo). Indigo is prone to fading on some people, so I could maybe see it fading, but it's not going to turn funky colors or anything.
I say all this with the disclaimer that what you're using is pure plant matter :) Bets are off for people using weird stuff with undisclosed ingredients

Was happy when I saw your name as latest poster on this thread, as I know you're very knowledgeable about things regarding haircare, henna etc in particular. :D
Yes, that's the impression I've gotten of henna as well, after everything I've read about other people's experiences. :p
Ah, a friend of mine's blonde hair always gets a green cast after bathing in pools, but my natual color (ash blonde) never had. I guess I was just fortunate, like that.
True that, that would make a difference.
Anyways, it is for sure a relief to know that even if some water were to leak in I won't have to worry about it. :agree:

I haven't dipped my entire head in chlorine, since I began dying it with henna and indigo. But I did swim for a while, some years ago, getting my neck hair wet. I sprinkled it with tap water first, to make it suck up less of the chlorine and not even the indigo was affected. But then it could of course be different in public pools, where I believe that they use more chlorine. And if I would have gone for longer and more often.

Yeah, and that's why I won't go to a public bathhouse without a swim cap, because I don't want my hair getting dryer due to exposure of chlorine. :p
