:waving: Definitely in for the full year!

I will be trying cassia very soon, but that was allowed anyway, so no matter.

From time to time, I get urges to have highlights done with clay lightening, but my new and very effective method of talking myself out of it is that I will invest that money into music instead. I can buy myself classes, mixing/mastering hours, musicians to play on my recordings, CDs/vinyls... The list goes on and on!

Great thread idea! I will join, although I am not 100% certain I will abstain from color conditioners (which I assume count as deposit dyes?) all year. I've been "allowing" myself those as they only affect my already dyed hair and washes out anyway, but the past couple of months I haven't really felt the need to do anything to my hair, and I hope that vibe continues into the new year.

I don't know if I am right here lol, using cassia mixed makes my greys dark blonde I thought it was only about chemicals. Maybe I am not in, lol.

I think cassia should count as dye, since it leaves colour deposit in hair :D

I'm so in! I recently dyed my hair back to its natural colour, which it hasn't fully been since 6th grade? When I was 12 or so. Going to keep it natural and get some healthy growth in!

Oh yeah, dye is definitely dye. Chemical or natural, at least that is my take on it. I don't know how Bat feels about this. Ask him!

Cassia is very subtle so I don't see am issue using it, henna and indigo definitely is out I'll edit thr first post and I'll take votes on what people think about using cassia .

and toners like purple and blue shampoo Is fine but anything like rose gold or fashion color shampoos are out

This is interesting! I’ve done a good job of avoiding bleach for 3 years but allow myself toning conditioners to darken the bleached parts and blend them better. I may be willing to leave it all by the new year, i’ll report back if I join :o

Hello :flower: Hello

That is an excellent thread!
As you maybe know, I let my natural hair color grow out and I proceed since around 1,5 year. Perhaps a little longer ago, I can’t remember exactly when I started the „back to my natural hair color“ project.

So well, I am definitely checking in to the whole thing and that includes for me no color, whatever kind of product it is. Nothing at all.

There are some nice folks around this thread, we will enjoy great fun together.

Curioius why 3 of these posts. And just to be ornery, I agree. Cassia, Henna, deposit-only, anything that changes color is a dye. For purposes like this, at least :)

I'm totally silver white, so I've got no horse in this race, just being obstreperous. And curious.

Oh yay, a full year challenge I can actually do :D Having just completed one year, I'm fairly confident I'll manage one more. By then my natural color should be down to my chin or so and I'll finally see how it looks with my face. Hopefully that doesn't make me want to color it again

I've considered trying cassia because I do miss the conditioning effects of henna, but I've definitely been enjoying not doing anything.
I may still use some purple/blue shampoos/conditioners, don't know how often.

This is an interesting idea! I think I'll consider this. I dyed my hair black about 2 months ago and I think it's gotten to the point where it looks like a natural black/brown and I can grow it out smoothly. Might dye my hair one final time just to use up the last of my dye so it doesn't go to waste and then see how this goes!!

We can be growing out black dye buddies a while, I Put black in my hair one last time so I wouldn't be growing out black and henna red depending on how much regrowth I have I might drop out in july

Oh no GordonMurphella, all is good :)
I am so sorry if my post was not specific clear for your understanding. I really wished the race would be over for my too and I won it also. You know it will take still a couple of years for me until the last dyed inch had grown out. So, I think you musst be happy because you have done with all of this.
Again sorry if my post wasn’t understandable for you.

My mom convinced me... oh a couple years ago, to let it go. Every time I picked up a box dye from the store (our Aldi now carries Garnier Belle Color of all things, so the temptation = definitely there). But IDK, my hair is like 5% white (I am going white as of day 1, no actual "grays"), so why bother to have this constant worry about dyeing in time but for roots to show.

I can't wait to have my natural hair back all over. Another year of growth would make a big difference!

Joining in! I was thinking of experimenting with some brown deposit-only masks to blend my natural and dyed hair better, or just make my color richer, but that misses the point of trying to grow out my natural color. I'm over a year bleach free, and in September of this year I'll be one year dye free! I really want to make it to two.

Two years would be such an accomplishment! I haven't bleached my hair since 11/16/22, so I'm now over a year! 426 days according to Google haha. I continued to dye for so long after... a shame now that I miss my hair being natural. I truly think that most people look best with their natural hair colour, but of course everyone has their own opinions!
Good luck!!

Not sure if I fit here since I haven't dyed my hair in years but recently I have been so tempted so I need the support lol. I just really miss my black hair and whenever I see someone with black hair and similar features to me (light complexion, blue eyes) I want to dye it again. But I also know I would regret it, one reason being the upkeep another the fact that I rarely wear makeup nowadays and back when I had black hear I almost always wore some eye makeup with maroon lipstick. I feel like it's a look that requires more effort and that just isn't my thing right now. So I'm staying strong!

Oh and I forgot to mention the damage. I actually did damage my hair a lot with the black dye but I think that was partly because I was using a drugstore blue black color that probably had a way higher developer than I actually needed

I absolutely think that means you fit into this challenge! If it would feel like, well, a challenge to go a year without dying your hair, it makes sense to post here! I definitely get what you mean about more effort. I used to keep my peekaboo colour various vivids, and it took lots of effort to keep it looking good. Years ago I would dye my natural brown hair slightly darker so I could have a bigger contrast between my fair skin and dark eyes

What are the thoughts on a gloss? I'm specifically thinking the Redken Acidic Gloss. This is how it is described on the website:

Redken's Acidic Color Gloss Activated Glass Gloss Treatment is an at-home professional strength glossing treatment that deeply conditions and adds intense, molecular-level shine for color-treated hair. A pH-balanced formula with Citric Acid and Apricot Oil, this pre-activated ultra-acidic formula helps seal the cuticle and locks in glass-like shine for up to 3 days and +76% shinier hair**. This rinse out glossing treatment leaves hair looking and feeling revitalized. Use as a complete routine with Acidic Color Gloss Shampoo, Conditioner and Heat Protection Leave-In Treatment

I'd love to try it, I actually have a sample, but I won't if we decide it counts as a dye

Ok so this will be much more of a challenge for me than I anticipated  As my natural hair is slowly getting past halfway down my face, I notice myself thinking “nooo wait, I love that henna color depth, it matches my eyes so much betterrrrrr!”
I was also surprised that after I got most of the bleach trimmed away last month, my hair has a much darker overall look than it has ever had and it’s taking some getting used to.
I’m confident I’ll never bleach again because it’s just not worth the damage, but the henna richness is really difficult to let go of, especially given that it actually nourishes my hair too.

I must remember henna will always be there though, but I’ve already invested a whole year of growing out natural, so I must let it get at least to SL before I cave.

This is gonna be tricky as in this year I'll be moving to another country to study also I might meet my future in laws! Oh boy, let's do this.

Same I haven't had natural hair since I was 13 and I'm 38 now this year will be a challenge I usually can't last longer than a month before dying/bleaching it won't be forever I'll probably bleach it after the challenge is over

This is key, I think! Henna, dye, bleach, scissors, it will all be there in the future if you eventually have a change of heart. I always feel a sense of urgency whenever I get an impulse to change it, as if the dye will somehow disappear if I don't act now.

That's the reason I keep relapsing haha, I got tempted with the loose henna powder but I threw it out to avoid possible temptation when long enough for it

Been there, done that! It's a tough cycle to break for sure. I think going a certain time without dye is a great way of working your way out of that mindset.

I didn’t realize there was a challenge for this! I definitely want to be a part of this. I last bleached my hair Dec 16,2023. I wasn’t planning on that being the last time but have had a change of heart after letting my roots grow out a bit more than usual. I’ve tried this but I feel very, very ready to just go back to my natural color now while I’m growing it out this year without trimming - why not stop the bleach too. :))

I want to get it long enough so that overlap is less likely, like anything jaw length and shorter is more prone for overlap cause it's so short. I won't be giving up dye forever.

Bleaching hasn't crossed my mind once, but I do wish I could dye the previously bleached parts back to my natural colour again. The last dye has long since faded and I miss when it LOOKED brown all over. Oh well, that will only make it worse

Chasemi

Annnnnnd I'm officially ducking out. I'd really like my hair to be brown all over, and in my head, I think it's okay to dye the part that's already been bleached so much. This way, I'm adding no time to the grow-out to virgin hair. I'm going to use a deposit only colour and then henna on ONLY the bleached parts. I think my hair will look healthier when it's all dark anyways

Good luck everyone!
