View Full Version : What time of the day do you wash your hair?

If you have a specific one, of course. Do you feel one time slot is better than the others? At morning vs afternoon vs night, or a specific time, if you will.
I don't like washing it at night(specially now that's winter) bc it doesn't dry all the way and I'd rather use heat than sleep w wet hair. At mornings it's awful too bc it takes a long time to dry so it bothers me all day + I'll usually need it up during the day. Afternoons are almost perfect... Except that sometimes I'll be busy from 12:01 to 17:59 and once it's past 18:00 it's not worth letting it dry naturally, so: heat.
One day I'll find the perfect time to wash my hair, but today is not that day.

BTW this is a silly detail but washing in the morning is a bit annoying bc there isn't a lot of time for a nice oil treatment AND if I apply it the night before my ends will have soaked everything so won't be as protected. You could circle around that by applying the night before and using cones on top of the ends the next morning, but then we're back to the morning wash issues previously stated and I feel my hair prefers carrier oil pre-poos, I like cones way them better for styling.

In the past I used to wash my hair in the evenings, even when it was long and it was uncomfortable to sleep with it wet (not to mention damaging). Sometimes I would wash my hair after an intense workout or an outdoor activity during the day, which was better. Nowadays I am lucky to be able to wash it in the mornings (with all the treatments) and let it air-dry. I would not change this time ever again unless I absolutely had to.

I don't like sleeping on wet hair so I'd have to wash it and let it dry before I go to bed I do prefer night showers though

I wash it whenever, depends on the purpose. For university, I’ll wash it the previous evening and sleep with it wet - that’s not a problem for me. For gigs, going out, etc., I’ll wash it the same day before the event.

Early enough in the afternoon for it to dry before I go to bed.

Used to wash 10AM or so on a Sunday. I now have pushed this way back in the day, past 3PM for sure. When I have time (when mom has time) and so it's often 7/8PM. I don't mind. I air dry for a couple hours, put my diffuser on it for 5 minutes and it's dry. I don't need to do it early mornings.

I use washing my hair as a way to force myself to take some time for me. So I reserve a half day, or a full day to do that. I used to wash on Friday nights but I wanted to get away from sleeping with wet hair. I shower at night so when I made that decision I also started washing upsidedown so my body can stay dry.
Now I oil on Friday night, deep treatment as soon as I wake up on Saturday. While it's sitting, I have my coffee, make breakfast, etc. Then I wash my hair upside down over the bathtub. I started off washing in a little bucket but have stopped doing that and use a handheld shower head now. I still put the bucket in the bath to keep my ends clean/prevent them from going down the drain. Usually when I'm done with all that, it's a little before noon, so I make lunch with my hair in my turbie. While my food cools, I put my leave in, then turn the fan on to help it dry while I eat. Then I'll get my laptop out to do some work so I can continue sitting. Depending how aggressive I am with the fan it can take anywhere from 2 to 8 hours for it to dry completely. On measuring days this is when I take my pictures, then I have dinner. :)

Usually after work in the afternoon so it's dry by the time I go to bed. Or first thing in the morning before work, I usually blast the air in my car on the way to work to make sure it's mostly dry by the time I get there :p

Same! I'm in an awkward time of my life now and if I don't have a set routine I'll look like a caveman AND not get anything done in no time.
I've been washing my hair on weekends so that maybe I can have a placebo effect of "starting the week well" and it going better than usually. I'm trying to keep a routine of shaving and exfoliating my body, too, which I never do, only when I'm going out w friends, but love how it feels.

lately, I've been washing after work right after I walk in the door so I have time for it to somewhat dry before bed. So I wash around 7pm and go to bed around 9 or 10pm depending on how tired I am. My hair is like 40% dry by then. Otherwise, I'd have to shower at 6:30am and put it up wet. I work with autistic kids and some of them yank on my hair if it's down so I have to put it up all day long so I don't get hurt. On the weekends, I wash my hair around 1-2pm.

I wash my hair about twice in a week, maybe three in summer almost always in the afternoon, because I have more time for myself. If one day I need to wash it in the morning I don't have enough time so I only use shampoo, conditioner and sérum. Id I have more time I make a hair mask.

I usually like to wash it at night, but set aside an hour and a half for it to air dry. It’s hard for me to do everything I need to do during the day with my hair wet!

Usually in the morning, but like 6-7 PM at the latest. I like to give my hair at least 4 hours to air dry

I hate it so I procastinate as long as possible, usually early evening. It being so warm here, it's usually dry well before I go to sleep but when it's cooler, I just throw it over the end of my bed (6' off the floor) and let it dry while I sleep. Efficient use of time :p

Keep growing and your wish will come true! In the morning, mine's still hanging over the end when I awake. I think it's the weight. Just can't have animals around

I usually wash sometime in the evening, but my hair often takes several hours to air dry so even if I wash at around 7 or 8 it's still pretty damp by the time I go to bed 2-4 hours later. Sometimes I wish I would wash earlier, but I strongly prefer bathing in the evening. In the summer if it's going to be a warm sunny day I'll wash in the morning though, just so it will dry faster. And in the winter I can always sit in front of a heater to dry it faster - a perk of living in a cold climate!

Shortly before bed. That way I only have a brief portion of the day left to deal with it wet, and by the time that I wake up it's a third or halfway dry.

I typically wash in the evening, with 2-3 hours to dry before bed, if it’s damp still, I gently put it in a cinnamon bun with a satin scrunchie or claw clips, and detangle in the morning when it is fully dry. Sometimes I need to let it airdry in the morning a little before brushing. If I want to wear in wavy for an evening event or an afternoon out, I was 2-3 hrs beforehand.

At night, between 19:00 until 20:00. I like to wake up next day with clean hair, so I style it and go out. Where I live has a dry and hot weather, with a lot of dust, so it is dirty when night comes. If I wash it at morning, I would wake up early.

Ideally I like washing it late afternoon if I can so it can dry before bed. Sometimes I wash it in the morning as well, but I don’t like washing it right before bed.

Currently, I prefer a morning wash because my hair is always at its most floaty and wurly on wash day ;)
When it’s cold out, my preference will magically switch to evening. :p

Generally the evening. I prefer to shower at night because I'm less likely to then hurt myself before I start my day. Joys of hypermobility, my tendons and ligaments are looser post shower and I'm more likely to hurt myself by accident. Though because life is slower in the evening, I tend to not get hurt.
Every other hair wash or so, I will blow dry my hair. I just like the way my hair is after I blow dry it. It's so much more manageable.

First thing in the morning! I have all day to let it air dry, I can do an oil treatment the night before, and then I get my cleanest hair to be on display, whereas if I washed in the evening my cleanest hair would get "wasted" over night!

I tend towards late afternoon. But it's not really on a schedule, so I might do one morning, or right before bed, or random end of morning/ early afternoon, whenever I happen to have some space in my schedule

I take my showers in the evening after work since I work a dirty job, so that's when I wash my hair.
Before I had a dirty job, I'd wash whenever during the day I felt like it. I almost never wash at night though - I hate sleeping on wet hair.

Nighttime, before bed. If it air-dries in the day it gets extra frizzy (I guess from all the movement) and at this length I have no desire to deal with it being wet!
Plus showering and washing my hair exhausts me, I wouldn't be able to function if I had to stay up in the daytime. I can usually function long enough to have a cup of tea before going to bed, but not really do anything else. And I need more rest the next day to recover after a full hair wash, as well.
But even before that was the case, I've almost always showered at night so that's when I washed my hair too

I recently did an analysis of which worked better for me - evening (just before dinner) or morning (just before work). I learned that, as much as I dislike getting up early, morning is better for me:
1. I wash my hair every other day. If I wash in the evening, then: wash & air dry - sleep on it - work - sleep on it - work... by the end of the 2nd work day, I'm a greaseball. But if I wash in the morning: wash & diffuse - work - sleep on it - work... I look fine by the end of the 2nd work day.
2. I use less water when I wash my hair in the morning. I shower and wash myself every day. If I wash my hair in the evening, I still shower/wash my body in the morning anyway (it's a vry short shower, but still...). If I wash my hair in the morning I use the conditioner "soak" times for body washing. Washing hair in the morning, I just plain take fewer showers.
3. In summer, this frequent shower thing leaves my towel wet for more time, and I also have to switch towels more often and do more laundry.
4. Some of the articles I've read indicate extended wet hair can be detrimental - I'm not sure it's actually true for me, but 5 hours is a long time to have wet hair, avoid touching it, avoid going out in wind, and avoid leaving the house at all. Diffusing takes me 30 minutes and I can set up the dryer and read LCH while drying!
4. I touch my hair less when I diffuse in the morning. Air drying at night, I try really hard not to touch it, but it does need to be arranged properly every time I move around and sit back down. And then I poke a finger in every hour or so to see what progress I'm making (hoping that lower humidity or the fact we just turned the heat on might make a difference - they don't).
But I am trying to push to every 3 days, and I do wonder if my timing will need to change then.

For me mostly morning or early afternoon. When I was going into the office it was always AM and I’d have to use my blow dryer. Now its generally when I have time during the day. Rarely at night

I prefer morning to early afternoon, tho I'll go as late as 6 PM sometimes if I don't have anything to do that night. I like to oil my scalp for a couple hours before washing, and diffuse after, so earlier is better.

I take my showers in the evening after work since I work a dirty job, so that's when I wash my hair.
You and me both! Landscaper here, and I'm always covered in dirt and plant matter so it's right into the shower the minute I get home.
I don't wash my hair every day as I keep it in a braided bun and under a cap, but I like to wash my hair on Friday after work, around 4pm. It's such an event that even my boyfriend asks me if I'm taking my "long shower" and knows to plan accordingly. Since it takes my hair a while to dry, he knows I'll be relaxing on the couch with my hair over the edge for a few hours
I'll put a leave-in and wear a hair turban for a bit, but my hair is pretty dry I'll put it in a single braid or milkmaid braids if I'm still going to be up and about. It's rare, but if I wash my hair later at night I'll sometimes sleep with it loose and my hair hanging over the top of the bed so it can dry.

I love taking showers/baths at the end of the day so that's usually when. But it's so annoying because I have to wait for it to dry before bed. Probably why I don't wash it a lot !!

I do early evening, ideally, to have time to air dry. I'm the type to wash the day off of me, so it's my preferred shower time. If I have to shower later and it's too close to bed, and when it's cold weather, I hold my hair like a very loose pony and dry just the roots on a low blow, with a warm setting, careful not to make tangles.

If my day is free I love a morning/noon hair wash. Other than that, I wash my hair around 8pm - 9pm. This is me being organized though. Sometimes I am not aware how fast time goes and I end up having to wash my hair midnight. Especially if I really really need clean hair the next day...

When I was in college I would wash it in the late evenings. Like, around 5:00PM or 6PM, and it only took 2 hours for it to air dry. Then, I would blow dry it using heat for only 5 minutes like what I'm doing nowadays. But as of these days I wash it every morning between 9:30AM to 11:00AM bc that gives me enough time to do all kind of oil treatments and deep conditioning treatments.

When I have a weekend day when I'm not going out, I try to get my hair washed by 10am so it's dry by dinner. If I don't, I wash it in the evening and drape it over the side of the bed to dry and it's usually done by after breakfast.
