View Full Version : How to get rid of dry ends?

So I used the Aveeno cider shampoo and it really made a huge difference to my hair.
It definitely looks straighter and there is no more frizz or dryness on my middle parts of my hair.

However, my ends are still dry. I trimmed much of it a few days ago and it's better but it's still dry.

I'm putting mielle rosemary oil on it but it doesn't do much for it.

Are there any masks or oils that I can use to get bouncy and hydrated ends?

I've been using shea butter on my ends on top of my usual oils/leave ins and it seems to be helping, but I haven't had a trim since to evaluate if they feel a lot different

I don’t know how your water hardness is, but my hair gets very tangly and ‘dry’ when I need a chelating wash from hard water build up. Then I follow up with a deep conditioning (sometimes just my regular conditioner soaking for longer, sometimes a protein mask). I mostly use drug store brands like garnier, or conditioner bars with shea butter towards top of ingredients. There’s lots of other things to try, search for SMT and ROO

Have you tried some of the basic remedies like clarifying? You might have build-up. Or, it could be that you need a different type of conditioner for your ends. Maybe one with more moisture I'd that conditioner has any protein.

Thanks for this

Yes the water is definitely very hard and has basically caused a lot of damage.

BTW what is SMT and ROO?

Yes clarified with the apple cider vinegar shampoo from aveeno. It helped but my ends are most problematic.

Which conditioners do you recommend ?

I don't use silicones myself so they may not work for you. I like the Down Under Naturals line. For something thicker, I use Garnier Fructus Sleek and Shine.

I oil my ends every morning - just the last inch or two - because they tend to be dry if I don't. My hair strongly dislikes coconut oil. Jojoba, argan, and moringa are oils that don't dry my hair out. Sometimes I use a blend from Pomifera, or another similar blend that does have silicones, so if that's something that you avoid, that wouldn't be for you. But I don't mind silicones on a small-scale. I just don't use them a lot. Something that made a HUGE difference for me was when I started to use Hask's Argan Leave-in Conditioner after I wash my hair. When it's still damp, I spritz the leave-in, focusing on the ends, and I LOVE the results. Lastly, my hair loves pure aloe. I buy it on Amazon, Earth's Daughter is the brand. Everyone's hair is different, of course - but these are the things that really made a huge difference in the health of my ends.

Have tried the protein/moisture balance thing? Where one week you deep condition with a moisturizing conditioner, and the following week you follow up with a protein treatment. Or, just us a deep conditioner that has protein in it.

Oooh, that sounds wonderful! I may try that, just with a different oil.

Coconut oil(the teeniest bit) followed by a silicone-based hair serum

The rinse out oil (ROO) method has helped my ends a great deal.
I feel my ends retain more moisture between washes.

Sometimes I put a drop or 2 of oil on my ends, usually when I'm braiding my hair for bedtime. I find the oil kind of soaks in overnight and then in the morning my ends are nice without being very oily. But I hardly ever do this now I've started doing the ROO method.

If the oils and such don't work, you may need to trim off an inch. That will usually take care of it. There's nothing as nice as freshly trimmed ends.

'cones!! And a lil snip will always be of help.

My other favourite methods for silky ends are cassia obovata(henna is better, but dyes the hair), rinse-out oil, and applying my leave-in scrunching the hair like curly people do(it focuses the product on the ends).

What is the ROO method?

First i spritz some water on the ends (water moisturizes, not oil), then I apply oil or conditioner. Oil-containing products seal in the moisture.

Seconding this. I have fine hair and use the conditioner after misting since it seems to absorb better than the oil.
