My first hair thread, what a moment.

This is the result of a discussion from The Random Hair Thoughts Mega Thread (https://forums.longhaircommunity.com/showthread.php?t=108936&p=3984943&viewfull=1#post3984943).

In March of 2023, I started to decorate my hairstyles with fresh flowers/leaves from our rooftop gardens and plants in our neighborhood and well, it goes surprisingly well.

I don't know, maybe because both are things that grow well with enough care, water, and nourishment. Mother nature is indeed the best we can connect with.

No wonder for thousands of years, humans have been using flowers and other plant parts as hair accessories. I mean, in traditional Chinese hairstyle or Hanfu hairdo, all the basic hair accessories is generalized as "簪花(zan1 hua1)" which literally means decorative hair flowers.

As Whirly Girly said, "They're very charming, feminine and romantic."

I think I will continue to do this even when some of my plants fruit in summer and autumn. Here are some examples so far:

https://cdn.discordapp.com/attachments/1001725273378668557/1089941345948418098/IMG_4262.jpg
https://cdn.discordapp.com/attachments/1001725273378668557/1089941407621464245/IMG_4263.jpg

Detailed High-rec photo link to my latest herbal hairdo, I always link my photo to an Instagram post in case the photo link doesn't work somehow, the big crash scarred me for life so everything is duplicated from now on: https://www.instagram.com/p/CqSz_sOLm5y/?igshid=YmMyMTA2M2Y=

So I decided I should start a new thread about "Fun with Flowers, Blooms in Buns/Braids, Corsage Coiffures, Herbal Hairstyles, etc" (I adore alliteration lol)

If you think it's fun, and would like to share you pics or videos about your hair with blossoms, whether it's real flowers or un-real ones - paper, stone, metal, fabric, plastic... any material/medium works, including rose/rosette styles from buns/braids themselves:

https://www.instagram.com/p/Ckdq1ZSpmwu/?igshid=YmMyMTA2M2Y=

Anyway, everything floral and herbal is welcome here. And links to high-rec photos/videos will be most appreciated.

Let's have fun with flowers. :)

It's not much of a secret that I have a bit of OCD tendency lol. But you don't have to follow my photo format, just post anything you want.

Such as a hilarious one like this:

Thank you very much.
As someone with very dark hair, it is like a blank/black canvas, any bright color just pops up once it’s on top of my head.

Which reminds me, green is the default of all my floral hairdo.
Last Halloween I made a big jack-o-lantern bun with real pumpkin vines from my garden.

Those little hands are still my favourite. But the others are gorgeous. I don't think I'd have access to that much variety but I'll share an old photo that sort of fits.

LOL, that carrot officially won.

My herbal hairstyle this morning is also a vegetable.
Celtic Knot with Accent Braid and Basella alba which is a common yummy leafy green from my rooftop edible garden.
It has actual gone to seed (white and slightly pink) already and they will self-germinate in autumn.

I’m here! :waving:

I would have been here much sooner but I received no notification in the random hair thoughts thread, where you said you were gonna start this thread. So glad you did, Tuanyiji love. It’s a great time for this thread too, with the growing season just ahead.

Your hair styles are so delightful and playful, hun. Total eye-candy. I remember your pumpkin style pics from last year and think it’s amazing and creative. You must get tons of compliments and comments from people when you’re out. I love stand-out hair dos and you sure have them, doll.

Ok I died laughing over that carrot stick! Hahaha :rollin: Can you imagine the giggles, smiles and laughs you’d get, wearing that around town in public, Shorty89 love? Lol. I’d do it on a dare.

That hand in the hair shot is funny too, Tuanyiji. Haha!

Ok so I will have to do some hair styles with real flowers in my hair for sure. Maybe I’ll do one tomorrow.

For now, have you guys seen these adorable flower clips on Amazon? I just love them and have them in every color you can think of. They add such whimsy to the hair.

I can imagine even with just the two of us, this thread will be full of fun floral contents.

Here's my Beebutt Bun with Red and Pink carnations.
As long as I have got enough colorfully flowers to distract, you won’t even notice how distorted the bun shape actually is.
I have to admit the beebutt bun is my hardest nut to crack, because it just looks so unflattering on my head, yet the variations it brings is limitless.

So many things were lost in the archive, and that’s why I strike to create new stuff from now on.

Today’s hairdos are actually the variations of the previous beebutt bun, I did all four styles in a row by rearranging the coils (never changed the cinnamon base), and you can clearly see how as time went by, the bun and flowers didn’t hold up very well.

Not quite ready to join you-all yet, as only the very earliest of flowers are up out here. But give me a couple weeks or a month, and there will be plenty of raw material to work with!

Your beebutt bun is so pretty with the carnations! I love all your buns and up-dos, love. They’re just delightful. :heartbeat

Ok, my very first up-do using real flowers as an adult. I remember my mom putting baby’s breath in my hair when I was a child, for a special event…. but this is my first time doing it as a big girl.

My African Violets are in full bloom right now, so I used some. They are so dainty and delicate…perfect for hair.

How do you secure your flowers in your hair, Tuanyiji hun? I pinched the flower stems in between a bobby pin and then just poked them into my hair. This method seems to hold them in nicely. I still have them in now.

You are welcome to join anytime
Sometimes if I don't have any flowers, I just make do with leaves, even wilted ones can become a sight.
These were from a Yun Nan camphor tree outside my house. They matched my brown sweater pretty well.
In fact, this herbal figure-8 bun was what prompted this whole thread in the first place.

Thank you very much. Those crystal hairstick tips are stunning.
Your violets look amazing! I've been on a purple phase as well.
Usually after I put up my bun with a plain stick that barely got any notice (because I don't want the stick to steal the thunder lol), I pinch the flowers and the leaves between the gap of my scalp and bun, sometimes I use some U-pins to help secure, but most of the time they're for photographic purpose so I don't expect them to stay solid for a long time.

My hairdo of this morning is this one with Bougainvillea glabra aka glory of the garden or paper flower., and by the end of the photoshoot, the flowers fell to the floor lol.

I always post two versions of my hairdos on instagram, the plain bun and the decorative one, each from 9 angles, just to test the general reaction, in my opinion, the plain buns with the barely noticeable stick are the ones that show off my bunning skill and hair texture.

However, without a doubt, the ones with colorful flowers always get more likes, which is fine by me. I have a lot of hairsticks but I rarely use them, preferring this most trust-worthy nail-like stick, and plants are widely available around my area so it's an inexpensive and eco-friendly alternative.

Lovely, Tuanyiji :blossom:
I will definitely be doing this once my garden starts to bloom. Do you just use the flowers as is, or use something around the stem to prevent wilting?

Thank you very much. I normal just use the flowers as they are. I just pick them from the garden and use them within 4 hours. Some plants wilt quickly, such as this Carolina Midnight after 2 hours:
https://cdn.discordapp.com/attachments/1001725273378668557/1091002077897048074/IMG_4699.jpg

while some are sturdier like carnation and Bougainvillea glabra, I place the stems in a glass of water and the buds will bloom as time goes by.
For example, in this photo, the pink carnation was picked last week while the purple paper flower was picked yesterday.

What a great idea for a thread!!

I have always loved putting flowers, leaves and twigs into my hair, especially now when I bun a lot and it is just so easy to stick them in (my hair being super straight so if it's not up then nothing stays). This gives me a lot of inspiration and I will see whether I have some photo's to share too!

I used to wear plumeria flowers sometimes when I lived in Thailand... I'd just pick up the fallen ones on the ground. When I had my hair in Heidi, braids, I'd just tuck them into the part low at the back of my head. They smelled so good...

I have to admit I’ve done the same thing multiple times as well lol. Always thinking about the next possible styles yet never really get to do them. I have hoarded two large bags of plastic flowers and beads and all sorts of DIY stuff for my historical projects.
And somehow this fresh flower project pushes me to curb my procrastination because real flowers wilt if you don’t hurry up. For example, just two hours after picking, the pansy looks half-dead and I had to take the photo as soon as possible.

This is me too. I used to buy a lot of flower clips and flower headbands from H&M and hardly ever wore them. Then, in a fit of minimalism urges, I gave them all away. I wish I had some still, but I don´t think I´d wear them now anyway, because they were mostly pointy sharp metal things which would damage my hair and I want to avoid that.

I think I changed my bun too frequently throughout March (3-5 a day) and that caused more hair shed, so I will limit my hairstyles to at most twice a day in April. I also changed the background red plum to green weeping willow to signal the coming of spring.

Anyway these two are right-handed and left-handed variations of brioche bun, they look nothing like the one Haartraum made.

I love your flower hairstyles Tuanyiji! So darn pretty! :cheer:
The fresh flowers are so gorgeous and just take your lovely up-dos to a whole other level of beautiful. :flower:

I have a ton of silk flowers because I make homemade wreaths and I’d love to put some in my hair, because I won’t have to worry about them wilting and could rock them for the whole day.

There is also a wonderful product called wilt-pruf that I use to spray my plant cuttings with, so they don’t wilt while I’m waiting for them to root. It’s like a somewhat waxy coating that makes the leaves shiny. I wonder if spraying hair flowers with it, would help keep them lasting longer, so that I could wear them in my hair for much longer than just a picture. Might have to test that out. Of course I would spray the flowers and allow them to dry, before placing in my hair.

For today, I’m enjoying these paper roses in a french roll and my new pearl-pink tulip sticks. :heartbeat

Thank you very much.
Unfortunately, that flower was actually pink powder puff (calliandra surinamensis). At first I thought it was mimosa as well, but the leaves didn’t shrink away when I touched them and the flowers were puffier than mimosa. So I used an app to upload the photo and checked the plant’s origin.

Anyway here’s today’s flower, New Guinea Impatiens hawkeri.

I have been disappointed with using fresh flowers because by the end of a day or even an hour sometimes they are wilted and dying. So I've been sticking with artificial flowers. I love the look. Your photos are lovely.

You hairdo is always sparkling and stunning! Th flower and stick details are chef’s kiss.

I don’t really treat my cut flowers specially, so they will be used a few times before being thrown into my compost pile, I’m just satisfied that they have served their purposes.

Here’s my Pha Bun with flowers from before, I tried to mix and matched two different flowers to see how they would go together.

Ah I totally got what you mean about the sharp metal things.
I feel like all girls had the butterfly/winged insect clips at one point of their life, and then gave them up for various reason. I just dug one out to do this hairstyle and I quickly remembered why I quit it, because the metal tangled with my hair.
This is in fact my first terrible attempt at Gibson Pompadour for LHC’s April hairstyle challenge (https://forums.longhaircommunity.com/showthread.php?t=155954&p=3985888#post3985888):

I love the crown too, shelomit! And everybody´s efforts here are awesome as well. I admire flowers in the hair and you are doing a great job of it.
I do not wear them myself for already stated reasons and also because all I ever wear is sporty clothes and flowery style does not go with that (and also cover my hair outside so no one would see my flower girl adornments).

I have been disappointed with using fresh flowers because by the end of a day or even an hour sometimes they are wilted and dying. So I've been sticking with artificial flowers. I love the look. Your photos are lovely.
Thank you very much.
Today I made an exception and used some fake flowers for my pompadour, and it’s hilarious lol.
I didn’t realized how hard I had to bend the plastic branch and use some pins, and I still could not get the shape I want. I gave it up half way.

I was working in Mississippi and could not resist stopping on the side of the highway to play with these lovely flowers!

What a pretty flower crown! That is so wonderful! I check my app and it’s very likely to be trifolium incarnatum aka crimson clover, we don’t have that plant here but we have a similar plant with a rounder flower shape that used to flourish in my grandparents’ garden, I will try to find it for my next hairstyle.

Last time I tried a huge accent braid for my cameo figure-8 bun and ended up with a faux crown braid like this:

My herbal hairdo of the day is Syzygium hancei aka photinia red robin plant.

I think I should incorporate more braiding in my bunning so that I won’t lose my touch.

Yes, I recall they had clover-type leaves. The blooming section was much more extended than our common types of clover (which are rounder, like yours). I love all the floral fashions you've been putting up here, but I think the dragonfruit leaves have been my favorite! They have such an interesting texture.

Here's my herbal hairdo of the day. This accent lace braid will appear in all my hairstyles the following week. I have great plans for it as I explore how many variations can I get out of a simple bun and braid.

Thank you very much. Yes, they are artificial flowers because it’s been raining for a week and I only got these on my hands.
My hairdo is the day shows the longer version of the lace braid with a rope twist at the end. The colors of the chrysanthemum are not the best matches but I try to fill the gap with red plums on top. The bun is a braided lazy wrap bun done by my left hand so it doesn’t look like my normal right-handed one.

I think those artificial flowers are very pretty on you, tuanyiji. And thank you for the inspiration (and a new idea for me, I am definitely not very imaginative), it hasn´t occurred to me to do a bun with a different hand, I will try it myself.

Then you should practice more and open a whole new world of bunning.
You will find out that changing your leanding hand might result in a totally different bun even if you do it exactly the mirrored way. Normally my left-handed buns will seem much puffier than my right-handed ones. It may have to do with the coiling/twisting/wraping direction going against how the hair cuticles naturally lay. This will be even more obvious with wavy and curly hair.

I have been interested in tiki culture lately and have a couple of pretty flower pieces I got off ETSY. I have not paid my imageshack account lately and I don’t want to pay the yearly fee anymore just to post pictures here as I’m not that active on the site anymore. Wish there was a simpler way to post pictures.

OMG, I have watched so many of your video tutorials. I even sent you a DM here asking about the Puffed Not-ilus (https://forums.longhaircommunity.com/showthread.php?t=131084 ) since the video links there had been set private and I can’t quite figure out from the text instructions, unfortunately your inbox seemed to be full and couldn’t accept new message anymore.
Anyway, for photos, I upload them to Discord, it’s a social media app but I just open a server of my own, and send the pictures there so it’s private, it’s free and easy to use, I just copy and paste the photo links. But for extra security (in case the app collapses) I always include an instagram link with text descriptions as well. All my photos are actually backed up multiple times since I never trust one single big photo platforms any more.

Hi tuanyiji,

you make so beautiful flower creations. I only have metal flowers on hair sticks, which wouldn't count for this thread surely. I dream of resin flowers like that Kanzashi by Sakae, but I flinch from the high prices and until now I didn't find flowers for buns, be it artificially or natural, which won't hold a day.

I especially like your updo, where you insert the fruits of the lagerstroemia speciosa. That is so elegant and natural looking :D

I see you made the Brioche Bun just like me at the beginning, just with one stick and you thread up the whole loops. Haartraum in her video uses two sticks diagonally, which inflates a bun a lot! And Haartraum threads up the whole loops just on the upside, when she does insert both sticks diagonally. On the bottom line you just thread up the low line of the belly of the loop. That works best when the outer loop is twisted, but it also goes untwisted and the gravity does the rest.

Hi Fornarina, as stated in the first thread, any medium/material of flower/herbal is acceptable here, as long as it’s shaped like a plant, so metal flower is totally okay, you are welcome to post your photos here and I’d love to see them all. I remember making kanzanshi with paper scraps as a child and that brought me fun memories, maybe I will DIY some and glue them to my stick ends next time.

The thing with brioche bun is, my hair is not long nor thick like Haartraum's so our shapes will hardly look the same. I just tried your knot on knot bun and mine looks way different from yours as well. But that’s the fun of hairstyles, every bun is unique even with the same technique.

The black Calla Lily is in a Celtic Knot, the copper Calla in a Helix Bun and the Fuchsia hair fork in a simple wrapped bun.

As you see, I prefer copper. :)

I'm happy you tried my Knot-in-Knot Bun and it worked. It depends on which point in the circle you pull the smaller knot through. Sometimes the whole bun gets kinda askew, depending on how much it will rake out from the loop knot. And it is also depending on how much taper one has. There are special buns, who look different everytime I make them. :o

Thank you very much.
Here’s my herbal hairdo of the day. I used some U-pins to double up the Dutch lace braid and turned it into a 6-strand braided hair band, looking way more complicated than it actually is. I decorated it with some tiny pompoms for the first time. If I were to do it again, I'd probably change the sides of the flowers and the pompoms so that the accent braids won't get upstaged by the floral accessory and the plain side would be balanced out. This is an aesthetic learning process that I'm still working on.

After I start this thread, I make an effort to update at least one style a day, and that pushes me to produce new content and climb the learning curve, not just the buns and braids, but also figuring out the photographic background, lighting, angles, proportions, so much logistics go into it and I’ve never felt more productive.

That’s a pretty fork, your new hair toy inspired me to consider adding beads to my hairdos as well, I have so many knickknacks from my old DIY projects so I’d better recycle them as well.

I have to admit the beebutt bun is my hardest nut to crack, because it just looks so unflattering on my head, yet the variations it brings is limitless.

Here’s my hairdo of the day, I made a double twist nautilus bun, meaning I start the bun with two twists, the rest is the same. This creates a protruding shape out of my scalp, and that’s where the flowers come in handy, they fix the steep curves and soften the sharp edges, in the traditional Chinese aesthetics, things should be as round and as smooth as possible.

This is the last hairdo from April, it is easily one of the top 5 of this month.
The best thing about it? It is actually the same bun from yesterday’s bun, I just pulled out the hair stick, and reinserted in another direction to make the bun flat against the scalp, it is then shaped like a kidney bean (https://www.instagram.com/p/CrrwI9hJKwi/?igshid=YmMyMTA2M2Y=), do you think I should name it the Kidney Bun? lol
Next month I will change the background plants, so stay tuned :)

I can’t believe how unfocused these photos are under this warm lighting, and I regretted placing the purple wisteria in the backdrop. Lesson learned and I changed it back to the willow after this, I added a few tender green branches as a sign of spring sprouts.

May the Force be with You. A Pink version for the Pink Ladies.
This is basically three nautilus buns that requires no tool. I did pouf my hairline up a bit to cosplay Rey’s iconic triple bun style.

I actually made two versions, the other one was posted in the Star Wars Hairstyles thread yesterday (https://forums.longhaircommunity.com/showthread.php?t=112330&p=3989022&viewfull=1#post3989022), I will post the full version tomorrow here because I need to stick to one hairstyle a day and reduce mechanical damage as much as possible.

And it is a great idea to make it with Nautiluses, because here you have a very good proportion between the loop and the base wrappings. When I make the Nautilus with all my hair at once, I usually get a very big loop and the basement wrapping is just as big as the loop, not very much IMO. Of course, I could section some hair out and wrap it around the base entirely to make the loop a bit thinner, but usually afterwards it doesn't look that neat on the downside, where I have separated the extra strand.

My hair density is thickest in the front and thinnest near my nape, so I redid the bun a couple times to make sure the three portions had roughly the same amount of hair.

You hair is much longer and thicker than mine so the strategy is totally different. Andrea691 had iii ankle length hair and she made the triple bun with a pony base, it is also quite stunning:

The second version of Rey’s triple buns.
I redid it so the bump-it on the front looks smoother, I also hid the parting lines better so my thinning parts won’t be too obvious. The trick is to section the first portion with a reverse V shape.
The blue butterfly actually means Ben Solo, in case anyone misses the point or that Star Wars Roll Out animation.

Your new hair style is also gorgeous. Rose, light green and black are but an unstoppable combo. :toast:

Here I am, I tried lapis_lazuli's inverted log roll (https://forums.longhaircommunity.com/showthread.php?t=134&page=877&p=3988633#post3988633) twice and succeeded.
I used two fingers for the initial loop so it's easier for the hairstick to go through. I think to make the inverted bun, you have to get the pony base higher than usual if the hair is longer.
This is such a pretty bun, very elegant and dare I say, regal?
Here's the decorated version.

Hi Tuanyiji,

very nice log-roll. :) I just thought about, why it is called inverted. I think it depends on the thickness of the hair stick or fork, how many fingers you need for the loop. And even if the loop became too big, you can still rotate it for another half round to make it tighter. But, yes, I would make the ponytail a bit higher than for a LWB for instance. I think this is similar to my Caterpillar Bun (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sZXkwDhLm5s), because the log is quite segmented. I made it with helices that time.

Do the flowers hold anything in this updo or just the stick? Because I can't see the stick; it must be a quite short one.

I checked out your Caterpillar Bun and that's pretty much how I do my normal log roll, even though sometimes I insert the stick horizontally and twist the strand as I go to show more texture (I will update that version later).
It's funny, I called my version the "Nymph Bun", because besides being pretty like a natural spirit, nymph also means a larva of an insect (such as a grasshopper, true bug, or mayfly) with incomplete metamorphosis, in a sense, we had a similar train of thought.

Lapis' version is called inverted because:

Hi Aithne, it's a bun I don't know a specific name for but it's been my favourite for years. I explain it like this:

Ponytail hair in left hand, loop hair up over left index finger, then wrap remaining hair clockwise around the base.
Insert stick alongside index finger (still in the loop), then remove finger and maneuver the stick with the loop of hair below the wrapped hair, and push stick back up through the wrapped hair.

This motion inverts the stick (if it had a topper, it would be sitting near your neck). I don't do topped hairsticks, so it works fine for me. It's the most comfortable and reliable bun for my scalp.

That's why we need a higher pony base, otherwise it would be stuck at the nape.
If it is going upward, then the position of the pony base doesn't really matter.

Here's a plain version that will show you better positions of the stick, it's a 13cm nail-like stick, my favorite and most trustworthy hairtoy. I love how it almost always gets hidden in my hair and never stands out after I decorate with anything.
I do most of my bun with no tool or just a single stick, I take a video, and then I decorate it with flower with pins, and continue the video, then I screencap the angles I want.

Thank you for your explanations. :-) Then the loop is at the bottom of the log, not at its top. Interesting. When you have very long hair, that makes sense, because the base wrappings are much bigger than the loop. Not so in my case, that's why I prefer it the other way around. I'm looking forward to your video. :)

I found some old photos of my Nymph Buns.
I forgot to mention, I actually start by leading the bun with the stick and so I can add an extra twist on the initial loop if the bun feels too loose, but otherwise that’s pretty much the same with hands.
The low bun version:
https://cdn.discordapp.com/attachments/1001725273378668557/1105529678963408906/IMG_7760.JPG
https://www.instagram.com/p/ClQ8EajrtHV/?igshid=NTc4MTIwNjQ2YQ==

https://www.instagram.com/p/ClQ8tUmr93B/?igshid=NTc4MTIwNjQ2YQ==
As you can see, since the base was heavy, the low bun version nearly fell off when I tilted my head back, not a pretty sight. The high bun version, on the other hand, looks smart and elegant.

I love talking about bun techniques with someone who understands, and the back and forth! This is the wonder of LHC. On other social media, when you go this in-depth with words instead of photos and videos with non-LHCers, there is no feedback at all lol.
I will probably resume updating my video tutorials after my dad’s conditions get stable, for now, let’s stick with photo and text updates.

Fornarina, thank you for posting that link to your Caterpillar Bun! I'm happy to know this right side up version has a name and can confirm it's the same as mine, only I rotate the initial loop down to the bottom with the stick. How long do you want it to stay? I think Tuanyiji just sticks flowers in for as long as it takes to photograph them, so no special technique. I just aim for a stem length that I can pitch in a little, and leave it till it falls out

Hello Fiorentina, I did miss tuanyiji´s posts so I went over to instagram because I was worried if she´s not ill or something, but luckily, it´s just some annoying issue with logging in. I hope it resolves for her soon.

Hello Fiorentina, I did miss tuanyiji´s posts so I went over to instagram because I was worried if she´s not ill or something, but luckily, it´s just some annoying issue with logging in. I hope it resolves for her soon.

Thank you Nefcerka for to stay in contact and inform me, I am glad to hear you found her in good health. Health is so important.
Have a great day.

So I contacted tuanyiji on her instagram and I hope she won´t mind me sharing what I learned, because I know many of you miss her too.
Apparently, all LHC pages went 404 on her, she is not able to login, create a new account or even see us at all - I sent her the link you posted, Fiorentina, and she can´t see that either (neither this thread, at the moment). She can only see LHC through wayback machine (I don´t know myself what that is, but I have heard it mentioned here) and only threads that have been archived. She did contact the moderators and they sent her some tips, but nothing seems to work. If anyone knows how to help her, I am sure it would be appreciated, as this can happen to anyone, really.

@Nefcerka,
oh, that's so sad to hear. :( This phenomenon happens on other sites too, and often it will dissappear after some time for good. I don't have any recommendation either.

Oh no! I hope you come back, tuanyiji, your updos are one of a kind, and LHC is not the same without them :heartbeat

My first thoughts are censorship, unfortunately. I remember seeing a member from Russia not being able to access the site for a while. But if she's on instagram, she's probably using a VPN anyways? I hope that I'm wrong, and that it's totally random. And that she comes back, of course!

Nefcerka
June 1st, 2023, 04:35 AM
I thought of that, giraff, but did not want to bring it up, because it´s a sensitive issue and besides this presumption might be completely wrong.
I do hope that it´s like Fornarina said, that problem will go away on its own.

Sorry if I offended someone! I realize that we all live in different places, and polarization is increasing.. Thank you for pointing it out to me, Nefcerka. I prefer to stick to hair related content on this site, being that it is American and I come from a social democratic country, my political views probably differ to many of my longhaired friends here. To me, I was just stating the obvious (truth). Whited it out, because I sincerely hope I'm wrong!

I'm sure a number of folks wondered about that, it's such a sad thought, and I hope it is some stupid setting which will resolve itself soon.

Yes, a neutral platform is something Very Needed these days. People need to find a common ground just at least to remind us that we all have many things in common.

It's good to know tuanyiji is ok and I hope those in touch with her can tell her we have been worried and we miss her.

Mod note: please folks, don’t use white or grayed text to obscure things that may be offensive. Use for spoilers is fine when discussing books, movies, TV. If you think something may be offensive you can run it past a mod before posting. Nothing wrong with posting the reality that some countries such as China block access to some internet content.

Thank you for clarifying, neko_kawaii, I'm still learning the ropes here after a few years away! It's just hard to balance what is necessary to write and not. What belongs in a forum about hair and not. I found myself questioning that after I posted. It's a subject that's easy for me to just mention in passing, but for others it's probably punishable.. I'll contact the mods in the future - what's the best way to reach you?

Back to the theme of the thread, I feel like we should make some nice floral hairstyles in tuanyiji honor! I'll try to come up with something, anyways :flower:

Glad to hear that some have been in touch with tuanyiji <333 Back when I was doing classroom teaching, I remember the extraordinary fuss it was for students who went back to China over the summer to access many foreign-based websites. Hopefully we will see her again soon!

Anyhow, I was out fishing this morning. Nothing was biting (except for the first mosquitoes of the season, that is), but I still got some enjoyment out of the cool breeze and the beautiful calico-bushes, which are about halfway to their full splendor right now.

Oh, shelomit, great flowers! Calico flowers? Never heard that before. We call them Mountain laurel or Kalmia latifolia. You should have seen this area this spring! It was AMAZING for them. Never have I seen such a good year, and I've been here a long time. :)

The cats do not like those flowers, sticky little flowers that get stuck to their feet. Too funny to watch... step, step, pause, fuss with feet, step, step, pause, fuss with feet... :D

Aw, poor little Blackie XD I learned the "laurel" name for this plant when I was living in Kentucky, but the first place I saw them was Georgia and there my neighbor called them "calico bush." That's the term that's stuck with me, and it honestly does look a lot like a calico print.

Absolutely beautiful, shelomit, I love the scarf too!

Thank you! I love wearing this scarf as the weather gets warmer; it's cotton and very light.

How pretty! I'm jealous that you can keep a headwrap on. I struggle to even keep a scarf on my head. My hair is too slippery and my head too flat.

To be honest, I often redo them throughout the day because they slip. If I want them to be very stable, I use a wig grip/velvet headband and straight pins. That takes more time than redoing it, though, so I reserve that treatment for special occasions or very long days.

2023.6.9 High Lazy Wrap Bun turns 180 degree counterclockwise, I’m surprised how different it looks from yesterday’s 90 degree CCW version. Now I have new ideas about creating more bun variations, just try to turn them CW or CCW 90 or 180 degrees.

Flyaways are a very natural thing. I have lots of them. I just oil my hair from root to end every day so they are not as conspicuous.

Hi Tuanyiji,

@Nefcerka,
I like those flower claw clips a lot.

Today I have a sock bun for you - without a sock but with a gigantic U-Pin from Bella Boutique Menorca (https://bellaboutiquemenorca.com/) from Spain. This shop is very underrated, because you don't find it easily via random browsing for hair jewelry.

The tines of this U-Pin are 4 Inches (10 cm) long and the stone is a porcelain jasper I bought myself, because before there was a quite boring white stone inside.

Thank you ladies. It’s been a week and I’m getting used to the more relaxed lifestyle, even though I still haven’t told my parents. Financially I’m still holding up, I am trying to read more books, as in paperbacks, and not too dependent on my phone or PC, I might start some small business, who knows.

Hello, that is the literal translation of "[TUANYIJI] Hair-stick Buns with Decorative Flowers Compilation 101-120".
I’ve already hinted my dad, and I think my mom will figure it out sooner or later.
Last year the same thing happened from March to September, but we’re too busy in the hospital so they didn’t know why I suddenly had so much free time.

Thank you, for the moment I don’t have to worry about my financial situation, I just need some new venture, time to pick up my guitar, piano, or calligraphy, learn more languages, life is too short for my hobbies, and if things don’t work out, I can always study and take exams to get some more professional certificates for better job prospects, for example, I am already a certified ESL teacher, CATTI translator, I’ve also published a few books (not best-sellers, sigh). I can try and pass the bar or some engineering tests as an overachieving amateur. In China we can take these exams without actually going to school for a specific major as long as you got enough textbooks and study the hello kitty out of it.

That is so cool. So many when they lose a job go into a tailspin of fear because there isn't enough money for rent and food. The fact that you can take exams like engineering or law without the schooling is a wonderful thing. Can't imagine doing that here in the USA!

Off topic, but there are at least four states where you can legally practice as long as you’ve passed the bar, regardless of schooling: Washington, Vermont, California and Virginia

(You can also be a doctor and not have a bachelor’s degree—getting into med school is all that matters).

Soooo lovely, Greengable! And in a beautiful setting, too.

We have gotten absolutely pummeled with rain for the past two and a half weeks, which is good news for my vegetable garden and the swimming hole but not so much for the ornamental plants. A lot of our summer blooms haven't opened yet given the comparatively cool weather.

Everyone's hair is so pretty! Especially with the flowers added!

I have a rather large collection of flower accessories, mostly from Claire's, but sometimes I do use flowers from the garden. The issue with real flowers is that they wilt after a while, so I mainly stick to the artificial. These are all from this year. :)

I don't know what it's called in English though, in Swedish it's Liljekonvalj.
And in my city you are allowed to pick them (in certain places in Sweden it's forbidden).
The picture was taken June 3rd this year.

Aw, thank you so much. :blossom:

You think so? I've always thought of my braids as "normal-sized". But I appreciate the compliment. :sun:

Edit: now that I think about it, I've always compared the thickness of my hair to my sister.
Hers is very thick, which made me think I had thin hair, and my hair is not thin.
Which goes to show that comparing yourself to others are not fair at all.

We call it "lily of the valley"; amazing how similar the words are between English and Swedish! I've been trying to grow it in my garden, but so far, no success. If I do get it to come up sometime, I'll have to try it in my hair. It really adds such a nice delicate touch to your braid.

ETJ CURLS, yeah, certain words are rather similar, or at least when you look at them they appear to be (certain words means something else entirely and may still have the same spelling).
But then English and Swedish has borrowed loanwords from each other, so it's not that strange. :)

Oh, you have? Good luck with that, those lilies are very pretty.
Sounds like a good idea. :D

Been a while since I was active on LHC, here’s an updo I did last month. I have been busy practicing Chinese calligraphy @tuanyiji_art , that’s why my fingers and nails and my bathroom are full of ink stains. At one point I even considered using henna and indigo to make my hair inky black so the stains would not be as obvious lol. This might be the last time I use this clean backdrop for my photoshoot, I might put some of my calligraphy artwork in its place next month. My plan for august is benign negligence.
