Since there's a bit of discussion about levels I thought id so this may be people can post a photo of their hair and what level they are to give some of us curious about it a guide to levels and what they can look like

What a fun idea, Bat. I've dug up a few from before I used henna. I think I'm a level 5.

My hair roots are so dark (2-3?) that it almost always looks "blue" under cold lighting. It’s funny because in Chinese, black hair is actually called "blue silk thread", we think blue is the darkest form of black hair. Just like how you mix indigo and henna to get darker hair.
Under warm lighting, my hair is just very inky:

The hair ends (3-4) are obviously much lighter due to sun exposure and my lemon juice experiment, here’s a bun drop from last year:

My hair care routine has changed a lot since then, I grew about 20cm a year, here is a bun drop from yesterday:

Also, I used to apply daily henna oil but the orange tone doesn’t really show up indoor unless I use a black backdrop and a light in front of me:

I'm thinking 5 for me? But that judgment is complicated by 5,000 layers of henna plus natural reddish highlights, and the fact that I can't take a cogent picture of my roots, and the fact that I have to be in very particular lighting to even see where the root line is, lol. A couple of the indoor photos in this thread (https://forums.longhaircommunity.com/showthread.php?t=151192) are perhaps the best evidence. I think my natural hair color has darkened somewhat over the years from the one in which I'm in the yellow metallic dress, actually. (I think I'm thirteen or fourteen in that photo?)

Judging by the photos of level charts online, I would say my natural hair is maybe a 7-8? It really depends on the lighting. Those of you who are both smarter about these things and also have seen my hair (lots in my albums) might be able to say for sure.

I believe level 7 at nape, and level 8 from the crown. Ignoring the obvious lightest parts which are bleached, my natural hair is 2 toned. It looks much darker in my length photos as I rent a basement apartment and timing sunlight for hair photos is… impractical

I made a collage since my dark blonde is chameleon and reflects the light given. These photos top left to bottom right are: morning sun, midday sun, bathroom vanity light, cloudy morning light, and indoors with diffused sunlight through window.

Oh cool! And thanks! What size/area was the tattoo that you covered up, if you don't mind me asking? I'm going to try laser removal first but I doubt it'll work.

I had 3 smaller tattoos I was covering. One was on my sternum, maybe about 2 inches by 2 inches, and done in pink ink so it faded a bit (I got it when I was 18 and did the coverup when I was 27 or 28) and was easy to cover. The other two were cherry blossom branches, about 3-4 inches long, and you can still see where they were if you look at my chest piece and look at the thicker branches just under my collar bones. Not super big, but weaving them into the tree and making it all look intentional and natural wasn't easy.
I've been told the general rule for cover ups is you always go bigger and darker, but I'm 100% not a tattoo artist so I can't say for sure!!

I think a 6 is correct, at least from the pictures I've seen of your hair. Our colors are very similar and a level 5 dye is much too dark for me. But there isn't a true standard for color charts as far as I know, they tend to look different depending on who made them.

Wow. After looking at all these pictures I finally figured out that "level" has to do with color. I thought it might be another word for length or something. My hair is changing to gray and isn't really "a color" any longer and I've not been to a salon since 1990, hoping never to go again. Bunch of hair-butchers in my community. :)

rosenester

banoo, yours is maybe 8.5 or 9. It is a brighter and lighter gold than my lightest hair in similar light. And from vampiri’s photos my lighter half of hair looks very similar to hers, a darker golden color (than yours which is a paler yellow). What level are your glosses? They would probably use the same color level or 1 level darker at most.

I don't usually bother plaiting to the ends as long as I can bun it up, it's good to go.

I don't really like putting filter over my photos, I just have a photography studio-like lighting set up. For this photo set, I have six lamps from various angles to make it shine. My dark hair just seem blue under all the lighting.

I find it hard to judge. The lightest shades are all so different in different pictures. Some seem to put level 10 as white and others a light blonde. I think the darkest parts of my roots are a level 9 or maybe an 8. My hair easily lightens to a light pale yellow just from being outside in sunlight.

Solgave, I want to see what Bat thinks, but that looks like level 10 to me. The brightest platinum, with a pale yellow tone rather than a silver or white tone. Some of my cousins had this color as teens, and it darkened to a level 9 as adults. I’m gonna go hide in my 7.5 blondish corner now, next to you I would not be a blonde! It’s beautiful!

Ends may be 8 or 8.5.

I used to be completely platinum blonde as a kid, but was born with pitch black hair on my head. If I'm fortunate to live long enough I'll get gray and then white hair - that means I'll have had 5 completely different hair colours naturally during my lifetime. Wild.

:waving: glad to have a blondish club! Others have recently called mine honey, and my mom is always super complimentary of it.

The natural fade and multi tone is the best about our hair color, as my mom says, people spend a lot if money at salons to get the color and the ombre/highlight look that naturally happens :flowers:

It’s funny you had dark hair when you were born, I had only one cousin in my large family of blondes who was born with a full head of dark hair that grew in platinum afterwards.

Bat, it’s playing with my eyes with the contrast of the 3 different colors + the shadows.

Looking at the little tuft in the center (of the photo) next to where the neon folds over the natural… I am comparing the natural color to both split dyes and it’s closer to the ‘black’ so I am leaning towards a level 4.

What level is the ‘black’ and the ‘neon’ is it a true 1 and 10 comparison or a 2 and 9 ?!?

BTW - I :heartbeat this conversation it’s a fun game

I agree with Rosenester, a level 4 seems about right based on that picture :) However, hair color can look very different once it has grown out a bit, and if some parts are dyed, that can alter how the natural shade is perceived too. It will be exciting to see how your hair color looks after a few more months, Bat! :D

Here I am :)
It’s funny because in Chinese, black hair is actually called "blue silk thread", we think blue is the darkest form of black hair. Just like how you mix indigo and henna to get darker hair.
Under warm lighting, my hair is just very inky:

Also, I used to apply daily henna oil but the orange tone doesn’t really show up indoor unless I use a black backdrop and a light in front of me:

I love that! "blue silk thread" is a gorgeous phrase. Also, I'm just now learning about henna oil. Do you mix the oil with something to get the orange tint? And is henna oil very heavy or light?

There is a henna oil thread but it's archived ATM

I think a 4 or a 5, although I'm not sure which one. It looks fairly dark, maybe it's a 4? It's a really pretty, rich shade :)
I remember back when I was 20 that I was between a 4 and 5 I broke the shade system lol

Ylva I agree with Bat, a 7.5 perhaps? Although the color systems are wildly inconsistent, I'm sure your hair would fit either depending on who you ask. :)

Idk Bat but from what I've seen, it looks more like a 3 to me, 4 at most  Could be because it's just roots or because of the cool tone, but that's what I'd call "darkest brown".

Ylva, I agree with the 7 or 8, it's a beautiful color and I wish I had that for henna base

Thank you, Aerya and cookies! It is pretty unanimously 7-8, then. And the charts sure are inconsistent, I've seen my hair colour resemble anything from "medium blonde" to practically "medium brown", lol.

Nearly color twins we are, I believe! Mine often matches yours in that same type of soft overcast light.

With all the silvery tones I'm acquiring with age, I think I might be a 10.

I was taking pics today for a new signature picture, and I'm curious what level my hair appears to be to y'all. It's just after wash day so it's at its lightest (usually looks darker because of oil), and taken in natural light.

My brain is very bad at interpreting this kind of thing, so even after seeing everyone else's pictures I can't confidently guess. Makes me remember how my mom and I struggled to describe acquaintances we'd seen out and about whose names we didn't remember, because I'd think of the person as having blonde hair and mom would say the person had brown...

(I'm not much good at color, either... I know my hair is "brown" and "dark, probably" and that's about it. Is it warm? Is it cool? Is it darkest brown or just regular dark brown? Are the brighter sections still natural highlights or just areas where I don't have a high concentration of black hairs growing in?? It's all a mystery!)

This is a side tangent that doesn't answer your question, but I'm loving your mineral and fossil collection in the background. And you also have a lovely shell collection towards the bottom. My family and I are collectors as well. Yours are so attractively displayed. Mine tends to be used as paper weights or random book stands (if they are sturdy enough). I'm wondering what the yellow (green?) carved pot (?) on the left of the top shelf is? Candle stand maybe?

Haha, thank you! It's a good tangent. Some friends and I stumbled upon a shop a couple years back while out and about, please imagine the intensity equivalent of a small child bouncing with their nose smooshed to the glass window front as I went "I need to go into the fossil store". I'm still getting good-natured teasing about it, but it's fine, I accomplished my life goal of getting my very own trilobite. The yellowy-jade-green one is a tealight holder carved with vines; based on other stuff I've seen, it is almost certainly dyed soapstone.

Thank you, Bat! Much as I whine about wishing my hair was even darker, I really love my color. I wonder if my hair might be picking up a misleading hint of red from the dress in that picture--I haven't really thought of my hair as having reddish tones, which google is suggesting to me mahogany does, but also I admit again that I'm not great at identifying nuances in color--but that reminds me that years back when my sister was getting golden highlights for her hair (to recreate the natural sun and pool damage she used to get each summer as a child) my mom kept insisting that red highlights would look really good in mine, though we never tried it. So maybe!

Hah, it would be very on-brand for me to have hair that's both cool and warm, practically everything about me is direct opposites co-existing.

The lightest parts could also be from sun bleaching and the first lift effect on really dark hair is red still It's a very unique color I just got stuck with generic brown hair 😭

It's cool to see all the ratings on this thread, though I suspect there's either a slight "inflation" in the numbers or I underestimate hair color levels.

Anyway, lighting and the camera settings mean EVERYTHING. Here's proof. It's about midnight here, so there's no natural lighting--just whatever I have turned on. The left and right pictures were taken about a minute apart. On the left is a relatively dark room with a spot-light style lamp with a mix of LED and old compact fluorescent lights. On the right is the kitchen which still has those old tube fluorescent lights (hey--they last forever and don't use much energy, but they have a pretty bad color spectrum). Anyway, you can see the big contrast between the two, and on top of that, my IPhone automatically adjusted the picture on the right to be even brighter than it should be (I'm definitely *NOT* that blonde!). Not sure where I'd place myself for sure (still a novice)--maybe a 6.5 or 7 (a little bit darker now than before this past winter given a less solar "photobleaching" due to the cloudy rainy winter), though while my hair shines brightly in the sun, it's definitely nowhere near the 9 or so that would be reflected on the right (and at my age, anyone who is a 9 probably is that way because they have white/silver hair and not blonde hair). Oh, and if you're curious where Bagan is--it's in Myanmar (went to that country twice--once for fun and then again a year later for my job--back in the mid 2010s).

I laughed a bit pathetically to myself because there's no way I get out enough anymore to get sun bleaching, not that you would have any reason to know that! Then I remembered that I have a picture of such (from almost exactly 3 years ago) when I still had all the ends that had been bleached from sunning my chameleon regularly in the backyard, as you do. Sticking in a thumbnail for the curiosity factor (mine). (I think this was also taken in overcast sunlight? But I was definitely sitting almost literally in the window instead of in the middle of the room. The color looks lighter overall and that's likely partly lighting differences and also that it was genuinely lighter as I hadn't amassed as many coarse black hairs growing in 3 years ago.)
