I love these stretch combs so much. I recently found this purple one from Urban Outfitters. 💜
Purple is unusual because most are either brown, black or clear. Does anyone else wear these?

Cute! I don’t because my hair isn’t thick enough for something like that, but I do remember them.

I remember them, I had those as kid. Do you need thick hair for those? I would like to test one now, to see what I think about it.

Do you remember banana clips too? Haha, I have a couple of those as well. I remember wearing them as an early teen and dousing myself with dewberry perfume from the body shop.

Oh heck no, you don’t need thick hair to wear these at all. I love how they make the hairline have these perfectly combed little separated sections. Looks so nice.
I also watched a youtube video to find the best way to put them on my hair. Best to put it around your neck like a necklace and then move it up and into your hair…but just be careful not to poke yourself in the eye.

I’ve worn those in the nineties too! Nowadays I don’t like headbands that much so I’m not in a hurry to buy one again xD

Remember these. Much prefer something that goes ear to ear, not around totally. I never got along with these!

Oh yes I wore those. As did my grandma. We both had short bob back then and it's kinda nice. :)

hmm I think I vaguely remember those from when I was a kid (90's)
but they would always tangle/pull hairs when removing them, so I didn't like them.
It could have been maybe my parents only bought cheaper made ones, that caught hair easier.
Or maybe being a kid I wasn't being careful enough with them, I dunno.
Seeing your pic it does make me wonder how they would look on me as an adult now!

Here's my iridescent translucent purple one :)

What a strange coincidence! I had to go through old boxes and sort them stuff this weekend (Didn't want to do it :P Still not done) and I found it and now Whirly Girly is talking about them (It's that "collective unconscious" thing, right?)! I had an iridescent light blue one, too. I really liked the hearts on the top and I thought they were so pretty (everything with hearts or translucent/transparent or iridescent was pretty back then XD). They came in a set and really scratched up my scalp and my face (I'd scratch my face and neck trying to put them over my head). I had a hard time getting them out of my hair, too :P

Oh mine was made of metal wires, not plastic. All the "teeth" were folded over wires. There wasn't any exposed part to snag hair. It was quite comfortable actually. :)

Strange that I couldn’t see your picture Aithne, until I quoted you in response…now I see it! I wonder why I can’t see other people’s pictures in their comments. Weird.
In any case, that one is super pretty! Might be time for it to make an appearance in your hair again soon. :o
So cool that many of you remember using these. You can even paint one with some inexpensive dollar store nail polish, if you want a certain color. I painted one shimmery gold because I thought it would be nicer in my blonde hair, than the typical black color. I’ll get a shot of it and show you guys soon. :o
Much of the frustration mentioned here with use of these, comes from not using them properly….and I used to be one of those people. if you try to just move it out of your hair without unfastening it first, it will be a literal nightmare ….yanking and pulling out hair. Been there, done that. Yikes.
Unfastening the latch at the back of your neck before removal, is key. Doing it this way has made a huge difference for me. Now it just gently removes from my hair and doesn’t pull on a single strand.
I want to paint one hot pink next. 😊

IIRC, I wanted to like these... but rather than smoothing my hair back, they'd push it so I'd have a funny-looking poof behind the headband... I can't tell you how disappointed I was the first time I put one on and discovered that was what it looked like on me. :(

Wait, isn't the poof supposed to be there? I always thought it was a part of the whole thing...

Wait, isn't the poof supposed to be there? I always thought it was a part of the whole thing...
I always thought the point of headbands was to keep hair smoothly back. At least, that's usually how I see them depicted. At least, that's what I want out of them; people who want the poof will feel differently, of course.
The little sections it made always looked weird on me too, though. I see them on other people and they mostly look fine, but on me they just look odd. Maybe because my hair tends toward stringiness? So maybe they always made my hair look piece-y as if it was greasy or something. And the poof would look unkempt on me, or as if there was something odd going on with my head. I just can't pull off some things that are fashionable because for some reason, on me it looks bad even if it looks fine on most people.
I tried to years ago, but they were hard to remove because my hair would snarl up in them.
Ooh, yeah. I had something similar (https://cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/1549/0945/products/image_3b8d3014-188e-4f77-991c-5c8238811a71_grande.jpg?v=1476820551) recently (like the picture but long enough to use as a headband, though I also had shorter ones I meant to use as side combs), tried it on once... and oh, the struggle to get it out. I was afraid I wouldn't be able to...

I remember a girl in my class used to wear one! She had really thick, coarse hair. I could see the hair separations but couldn't figure out what was in her hair because both were very dark. My introverted 12 year old self was too shy to ask even though we were friends.

So cool that you got one, Suortuva! :o It looks lovely in your hair…thanks for sharing with us.
Now remember to fasten it around your neck like a necklace and then move it up and into your hair….and when you want to remove it, to avoid any snagging or hair pulling, unfasten it at the back of your neck first…and then move it up and out of your hair. This works the best in my experience.
Proper application and removal makes all the difference in the world…however, they still may not be for everyone regardless…and that is ok. :)
As for any poofing…that can easily be combed or smoothed down….but sometimes you may want a bit of a poof….just depends on your hair mood.
Don’t forget too, you can paint them the colors you like, using cheap nail polish.
Here is my purple one in my hair tonight. Please excuse the bad lighting because I have my purple-ish light on…but you get the idea.
I love these hair combs! :cheer: LOL

They were also once popular here, mine is black and metal, the tips are super pointy. These things are great if you’re dancing or very active, but they are a nightmare to take down, they snag on baby hairs and cause tangles for no reason at all. I stopped using it when I realized how much shed they caused after just a few hours, no matter how gently I took it down, the damage had been done.

Do you unfasten it at the back of your neck first, before trying to remove it? When I do it that way, it doesn’t snag on a single hair for me…or make tangles.
If you try to remove it while it’s still fastened in a circle, it will snag, pull and tangle like a son-of-a-you-know-what!

It’s a strip that you wear from ear to ear, not a round shape, just barely a semi-circle. The pack came with smaller pieces for your nape area. I took down my pony first before I tried to remove this, still would not work out smoothly. It’s cheap anyway so I don’t feel bad about throwing it away, my hairline is more important than anything.

Thanks but no, I have a "no more new hair toys before 2023" resolution and I’m sticking to it.
My current bun-only style requires basically nothing but a simple stick, sometimes I can even go stick free with my nautilus bun. Having tbl fairytail is easy as I can just throw my hair up and make the length disappear within 10 seconds. The less manipulation, the less shed. I need more hair attached to my scalp. LOL.

I hear ya, tuanyiji.
I used to be super careful with my hair and kept it up all the time…went through a phase….a very long phase. But then one day I said to myself “why the heck did I grow all this hair, if I can’t even enjoy it down sometimes”. I just got tired of constantly hiding it away all the time.
Mind you, I still protect it and care for it, but I decided that I’m going to enjoy it down sometimes…to enjoy it in all it’s glory and not worry and obsess so much.
I love and respect the fact that we are all different though (thank God) and we all have different desires and needs. A cliche saying but it’s all good. :)
I adore sticks and flexi clips for throwing my hair up fast when needed. I don’t even need a mirror and it still looks half decent.
Frankly, I wish my fair would shed. The thickness can be a curse sometimes. I just recently broke yet another hairbrush. :uhh:

Oh, yes, this is what I was talking about earlier! I tried it once and had such a hard time getting it out that at first I was afraid I'd have to cut it out... Now I think my cat might be chasing it around on the floor. And I so wanted it to work.

Haha Kat, reminds me of my mom who is always saying the same thing…I’m too old to wear this and I’m too old to wear that!
In my books, ANYONE can wear these, regardless of age. I’m no teeny bopper myself but I think they look terrific in my hair. I say wear what you feel comfortable wearing and who cares what others think, right?
I have a friend who is always saying “your hair is too long….you need to cut it…only teenagers keep their hair that long”. Frankly, I think she’s a bit full of it…..but in a nice way. That’s her opinion and that’s ok….but my opinion of my own hair is what counts most, ya know?
Sorry to go off on a tangent but I get annoyed when someone like my friend, tries to put others into their little age box of what they view as acceptable hair for my age…or an acceptable hair accessory. If it looks nice and you like it….then it’s more than acceptable.

I always felt like that, too-- "who cares what people think?"-- but now that I've hit middle age, I'm not sure I want to go around with people saying "I can't believe she's still trying to look young." (Truth be told, I don't want to look like a teenager, I just want to wear things I like, but "what I like" is often on the juvenile side, or is what I've worn for much of my life but that was when I was younger and it suited me, etc. I also could often get away with it because for most of my life I looked much younger than my actual age, but in the past few years it seems I've somehow transitioned to people thinking I'm much older than my actual age-- I still haven't figured out exactly why that is since not much about my appearance has changed-- so I feel like people probably expect me to dress even older than I do...)

I’m always telling my mom “no, you’re not too old for this or that” and truthfully she isn’t. She’s 72 but looks 55…seriously. I think it’s great when older people try to look youthful ….nothing wrong with that at all, in my books. Within reason I’m talking…like not a mini skirt and a Sailor Moon hair clip. :rollin:
But seriously, these hair combs are far from just being for teenagers. They look great on women as well as young girls. Most of the compliments I get when I wear them, are from middle aged women.
I still look like I’m in my early 30’s and I’m enjoying it while I can but I will still wear these combs when I start to look my age too. I guess it’s all about perspective because I love when I see older people wearing youthful and cool things. Nothing ridiculous of course, but like a bright candy pink jacket on a middle aged lady or an 80’s claw clip in a senior lady’s hair…love it. :heartbeat I actually admire them and will compliment them too.
I can’t imagine someone thinking “I can’t believe she is trying to look young”! Seems so negative and kinda mean really…maybe even jealous. I hope you don’t actually have anyone like that around you, Kat love.
But yes, if you don’t feel comfortable wearing something….that’s totally different. I would feel super uncomfortable and kinda kiddy, wearing a bumblebee or lady bug hair accessory.
Now mind you, butterflies are totally different. I (((((LOVE))))) butterflies and will wear them when I am 98! But there are some butterfly hair thingies that are kinda classy looking and not so little-girlish. Those are my favorite. :heartbeat

I don't feel like those are juvenile. I mean the "cute" animal-type hair things, etc. that traditionally are often only for little kids or, at the most, high schoolers, or clothes that are meant for young people, etc. At least in my society, a lot of clothing, accessories, hairstyles, etc. tend to be "coded" for certain ages-- like, we've had the discussion here many times about wearing two braids, because they're so strongly associated with being a hairstyle for kids.

Not gonna lie... I actually love that plaid pleated skirts are coming back into style, because I have always loved them (but, the last time they were in style, I was young enough to get away with wearing them. No way can I wear them in public, though, especially the short ones they're selling now. I'd say even a few years ago when I maybe looked like I was in my late-20s or very early 30s. Not so much now when in the past couple years people have assumed I'm nearly 50 or asked whether I need the senior discount-- when I'm not even 40 yet). (It doesn't help that I can still wear kids'-sized clothing. I absolutely have some cute t-shirts and such that I bought in the kids' sections.) And I admit I'd love a cute bumblebee or ladybug hair accessory-- or Sailor Moon, if I was into Sailor Moon! (To be truthful, I'm probably a lot more "fun" in adulthood than I was when I was a kid, when I was less into cute stuff and brighter colors.)

Unfortunately, American society is not always kind to older women "past their prime." Pair that with me being someone who never had a "prime" to begin with (I've never been attractive, even at my most-attractive ages) in a society that also values women primarily for their looks, and... yeah. I don't imagine anyone would actually say it out loud to my face, but I'm sure plenty would think it.
This isn't really the thread for societal attitudes though, lol, so I'll not hijack anymore...

I do remember these, and I remember them getting tangled - I don't think I opened them first though, so that could be why. They were a lot more comfortable than headbands (Alice bands) that pressed behind the ears.
Not sure I'd have any use for them now; in a bun really is the only practical style for my hair and I don't need anything else to keep hair out of my face or anything. I have some soft fabric headbands that go all the way around and only very very rarely wear one, if I need every last hair out of my face and the shower cap to stay on … extremely rare that that's called for. I also, if my hair is down at all or in a low style (again both extremely rare, even rarer than the shower cap thing), prefer to have a side parting rather than all back. [I wish I could with my usual buns but that doesn't work.]

No worries Kat love, you’re not hijacking the thread at all. I enjoyed reading your reply and found it entertaining and comical …made me giggle a bit (especially the part about wearing a sailor moon clip if you were into it).
Ok since we’re being honest….
When I was a kid, I adored the Smurfs and I must admit that if I saw a Smurfette hair clip today, I’d likely wear it (around the house ). Haha! Why not!
I actually have a lot of lady bug ornaments around my home…so I love them too…almost as much as butterflies. I often wear things at home, that I wouldn’t go out in. Remember when everyone was wearing pyjama pants as outside clothes….I just couldn’t do it but it was a huge trend for awhile there.
Oh yes Kat, I remember the plaid mini skirts and still have one actually (my catholic highschool uniform). :rollin: Wasn’t exactly mini but us girls made them mini by pulling them up and folding the waistline down.
Ah yes, the double pigtail braids. I’ve done them and still do sometimes. I think they look great on some people….but I get that they are a classic little girl style. To each their own, I suppose.
Yes MusicalSpoons, they are not for everyone. I think I love them so much due to the reminder of happy days when I wore them last and the nostalgic feeling they give me.
I cringe over hair accessories that rip hair. Lord knows I’ve had enough of those in the past. And right into the trash, they went!
I gotta get a shot of the stretch combs I’ve painted with nail polish. I will.

I remember those, but I don't think I ever had a purple one (mostly brown, black and clear, from what I can recall). They were a pain to get out, especially if you had thick hair (medium thick). Sometimes, they were even a pain to get in, because if it didn't look right, you had to take it out and put it back in. Since they were plastic, they probably broke quite easily. After I broke enough of them (since I was probably getting pretty frustrated by this point), I probably just switched over to barrettes or something.

I love these stretch combs so much. I recently found this purple one from Urban Outfitters. 💜
Purple is unusual because most are either brown, black or clear. Does anyone else wear these?

Ohhh yes, how very well I do remember those. I've always remembered how difficult they were to put them in my thick hair. I still have mine as of these days.
