What does the hair at the nape of your neck look like ( your back hair line) ? Pics please. Is it thin or thick? Has it always been the same?

It's thicker/thinner in different spots. My hairline isn't even. I usually leave the bottom layer down because I don't exactly like it. But I suppose it's ok because it's probably more the norm than the exception as far as hairlines go. It was thicker when I was pregnant. Thinned out when I gave birth. Thickened back up. Thinned out in a scary way after my hysterectomy and is now back to normal after the right dose of hormones and vitamins.

I don't have pics, but my nape hairs are fine and curly. I get little ringlets back there. I keep them trimmed so they will stay that way. :)

Hmmm; I don't know. In every single one of my up-do pictures (see photo albums), it doesn't pull straight up to reveal my hairline.

What I mean is that my hair is a little bit loose at the bottom of my updo; there's some slack.

The hair at the nape of my neck looks very thin & sparse. I actually just really took a good look at it last night, & it scared me. There are actually very noticeable areas of hair loss, when my hair is parted, & the hair that I do have is very very thin & fine. It scares me to think that it will not grow back in, & I may keep on losing it until I am bald. I wish I knew what caused it, but it could be a few different things, so I can't pinpoint anything in particular. I feel a little bit out of control of the situation, but I am doing what I can, such as using Nizoral for dandruff problems (which may have caused the hair loss), and I have started using Monistat last Friday. I guess only time will tell if my efforts will make a difference.

Could you not go to a doctor and ask if there's an underlying cause? Just to try and put your mind at rest

I would also recommend going to a dr.
I am in the process of figuring out what has cause my hair loss.

Trust me, I have, as recently as 1 month ago. I had a full physical & a complete blood workup & everything was normal. I think my problem is probably a combination of the evil birth control pill (which, like most women I have a love/hate relationship with), heredity, and a scalp fungus.

Did your dr. not recommend anything for you or refer you elsewhere? I feel for you cause I am in the same situation.

The hairs at my nape are shorter and medium/coarse, and I really dislike them. I can't get them all into a braid or a bun. They always fall out and tangle.

Drynwhyl, are those dreads of your own hair or are they extension? They're cool:)

Yes, my regular family physician recommended seeing an endocrinologist to rule out any adrenal problems or thyroid issues. They checked my adrenal gland, as well as my testosterone levels & of course, they were completely normal. She just said to "use Rogaine", which is probably a blanket statement for anyone she sees with hair loss. And unfortunately for me, my mother has very thin hair as well, so that is probably the MAIN reason for the hair loss/thinning. So instead of Rogaine, I have been using Nizoral for the scalp fungus/dandruff problem. It has helped some, but there is still some flaking. Hopefully, the Monistat will help my hair follicles to come alive again. Then again, maybe this is just something I have to live with. It is sad though, because just a few years ago, my hair was thick & healthy.

Well I am so sorry for you that they brushed you off like that. At least know you are not alone. Yes maybe the monistat will help. Vitamins might help some. Try not to worry about it and be happy with the hair you have (I need to take some of my advice).

I have a picture here: http://forums.longhaircommunity.com/album.php?albumid=848&pictureid=9293

It's a little old but it shows my nape hair well.

In general my hair there is finer and even a tad lighter but dense. I used to have many many short hairs from chemical hairdye related hair loss in 2006 there. It was not too dramatic and they grew back, here in late 2007 after a long day:
http://forums.longhaircommunity.com/album.php?albumid=848&pictureid=9301

And now they are much longer and stay in updos most of the day = clean hairline.

HTH!

Well, I first heard of them on here. I can't remember what post, I just searched it. Then I looked up the reviews on Makeupalley & Amazon, and they seemed to be good overall. I guess they are supposed to help hair grow in better, stronger, etc. I don't know a whole lot about them, I just found out they made them a few days ago. Check out the reviews on Makeupalley.com.

I was wanting to make this thread too! :) You can see my hair line in my latest photos. I plan on taking some new ones tomorrow. I'm very similar to the first poster's photo. I have an M pattern and it's been the same for at least five-eight years. (since a photo revealed this shape I was unaware of--I had my hair in an updo, drying it, and someone got a photo of me, and I was like wow! My hair line is neat!)

Just an FYI, my pharmasist said NOT to mix monistat with nizoral. Since they are both antifungals, but treat fungus differently, you can cause more problems. It says that on the nizoral website too. I also found that monistat won't work for the fungus that causes dandruff. It's not the same that causes the problems that monistat cures. This is on one of the links I supplied on plainjane's thread.

Ok I wanna make sure I am not confused here cause I don't wanna make things worse.
Nizoral and head and shoulders are two different things right?
Cause I used monistat this week and don't want to if it would make things worse.

EEK! So, if I am using Nizoral every 3 days, forget the Monistat all together, huh? Have you used the Monistat for dandruff, too? It's too bad that I spent $11 on this stuff, and I can't even use it now. I wouldn't need to use it for the reason intended, either. Ugh.

My pharmasist said not to use anything but nizoral. It's on the website too--I'll find that link...I hope ;). PJ--he said for me, I was using BOTH a zinc product AND Nizoral the same TIME...one first, then the next. He suggested for me to use the zinc based product first, then nizoral (for the itching.) after. The reason being is that nizoral is an antifungal, and by using the zinc shampoo after, I was washing away the antifungal.

http://www.nizoral.ca/eng/faqs_about_nizoral_2.asp#question

That would imply NOT to use nizoral with monistat--for irritation reasons etc.

That's interesting! I just read on a site that someone reccomended using Listerine to cure dandruff! It's interesting because we use this on horses to prevent sweet itch at the base of the tail(which horses rub constantly, and it causes flaking and loss of hair in that area). What was thought was the listerine made it sting, so they didn't rub, but I wonder if it was to kill the fungus??? I used mane and tail for my horse's sweet itch and that cured it for her.

Rain---it looks like monistat is ok for dandruff-from other sites, but unless you've spoken to a doctor, I'm not sure I'd use it. Even your pharmasist. But, don't use that with nizoral or your scalp might get really irritated. Use one seperate to the other.

Warning: In-progress pic for an authentic long-hair 1920s updo. It happens to be the best shot of my unadorned hairline.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v213/Nuranar/Vintage-Clothing/Beauty/DSC01166-1.jpg

My underlayer is not that thick, and my hairline is quite thin. There's a regular fringe of 3-4" lengths all the way around from above my ears. They're all pulled up neatly in this picture, but they're terrible about falling down from looser updos. When I get sweaty they turn into corkscrew ringlets!

that's what mine looks like right now, but I've got a lot of coconut and jojoba oil in my hair. Normally I have lots of little wispy corkscrew curls at my nape, they tend to frizz out into a big cottony fluff unless I use a teensy bit of oil to tame 'em down.

I just saw my hairline for the first time in a while yesterday when I took a picture of my first "creative" updo. My hair is not quite APL yet, so updos are new to me.

It looks like I have lots of 2-3" babyhairs back there! My hair is getting thicker and I think I'm getting regrowth throughout, so this is very encouraging!

Trust me, I have, as recently as 1 month ago. I had a full physical & a complete blood workup & everything was normal. .

the blood work done to evaluate a problem (in this case, hair loss) is different from the blood work done for a routine
physical exam. so unless you told them your hair loss is a concern they may not have done everything you would do to evaluate hair loss.

Also, most medical professionals do not evaluate thyroid properly and only order a TSH which is not the correct test
for evaluating thyroid: if you get this evaluated you will want to ask for a free T3 and a free T4 but there are other thyroid tests they might want to do as well.

Good luck with this but I would definitely enourage you to get this evaluated (if you haven't already) because hair loss while it can be due to many, many things is not normal.
