Hi, today while brushing my hair I pulled out hairs with the root,my hair got tangled in the brush and I didn't realise till I pulled its twice I've done it now. Speaking to my friend who is a hairdresser says that shouldn't happen and I should think about cutting it shorter? Is this true? Should I worry?
Thank you

Your hair is fine textured, and a lot of mine is as well. Fine hair, generally speaking, is highly prone to tangles (I've seen it be described as delicate cobwebs here several times!) and so naturally this stuff can happen from time to time if we're not careful.

I'm wondering if you brush your hair starting at the bottom and then working your way to the top? And what kind of brush do you use, have you tried a Tangle Teezer? And how often do you detangle your hair?

I probably have some more questions haha but I feel like I've been everywhere with the detangling process by now :)

I don't think this is a problem. Bad tangles do pull out hair, but it grows back. After all, any hairs you shed (the ones at the end of their life-cycle) will come out by the root and start growing afresh.

Hairdressers often prefer shorter hair as it requires more upkeep from them, trimming and styling. Reasonable, from their point of view. :)

^ Well said!

Also, OP, I'm curious if you detangle your hair while it's wet or dry.

Thank you both.
I use a tangle teezer but I think it was how I brushed it at the nape of my neck and it got caught in it causing me to pull it out. I brush bottom to top and have also started to comb it when wet as if I leave it till dry my hair is a nightmare to brush. I detangle my hair morning and night and sometimes use an oil first.

Losing a couple hairs from brushing should not be noticeable or require you to trim. I lose hairs all the time from brushing from this length. I think it comes with the territory, especially if your hair is fine like mine. ;)

I tend to finger detangle the knots around my nape, since my hair there is so fine those hairs tends to snap when brushed with my tangle teezer. I'd maybe try finger detangling once you've brushed up to your shoulders if you don't already do that. :)

Thanks, I'll try the finger detangling further up that should help a lot.

I wouldn't worry, I think cutting it, is extreme, it's best to brush at the ends and work your way up,

*Leslie8*, the longer your hair gets, the more ways each strand has to wind round itself and its neighbors. Entropy. Tangles.
I wouldn't use a brush. It's far more damaging than a comb can ever be. And you won't notice it until, over time, it's done.

Not exactly the term I'd choose :p - MASSIVE can be more like it.

Thanks, I have been thinking I should go back to using my comb I didn't have as much issues with it like I'm having using my brush.

I don't think losing a few hairs at that length is a problem enough to trim. My hair is a lot shorter than yours but every time I brush mine I shed or lose some hairs as well, and I only brush once or twice a day. So, I wouldn't worry if I were you.

Oh wow, it really seems you're doing everything with extra care! Awesome. I agree with the others, you're fine - losing some hair here and there is just something to be expected with longer lengths :) I was curious if perhaps there was a bigger issue, but nope, it all sounds good.

My own detangling routine is actually exactly yours, except my hair isn't hard to detangle when dry. However, even I lose hairs from the roots from time to time as I go through. No need to worry!

I doubt a couple pulled hairs is going to do much "harm". I mean... it's all relative. If you do this on the regular, then I'd say ditch the darn brush and get something else, something's up with that, but if it's a once-off. No way. I wouldn't worry.

I mean it sounds so alarming, when all it really is, is a couple hairs. How many do you have on your head. Focus on those. Compared to that, it's *nothing*. Try looking at it that way.

So the alarming, need-to-cut-the-hair-short stuff is really over the top, any hairdresser suggesting that is out to make a quick buck off of someone's insecurities.

Well there's your solution :) different tools and techniques work for different people's hair, so just go with whatever works best for you

This happens to me from time to time--usually because, while detangling bottom-to-top, I moved too far up from one stroke to the next and overlooked a tangle. It isn't the end of the world.
