View Full Version : The Advent Challenge/12 Days of Christmas

I don't know if this has been done before, but this year I've been thinking I'm going to set myself an Advent Challenge. I'm getting in a bit of a LWB rut and I think I need to push myself to get a bit more adventurous with my styling.

So, for the days of Advent leading up to Christmas, I'm going to try to wear my hair in a different way each day without repeating a style, and I'm going to try get a photo or video of each day so that I can put a final video & blog together of my advent calendar of long hair styles.

I'm thinking I'll keep the rules pretty loose - how you do it is up to you (so different accessories/temporary colours etc count), and if you don't think you can do the whole of Advent, you might just want to join for the 12 days of Christmas.

For me, I'm going to start on the 1st Sunday of Advent which is the 28th November and go until the 25th December. The 1st of December would also be a good starting date to follow advent calendars, or you might pick the 12 days before or after Christmas.

Anyone like to join me?

That's a fun idea. I"m not sure if I'll join in but I might try to do 12 different for all of December instead of 12 days in a row.

It’s a busy time of year, so I know it won’t work for everyone. But we’ll be very happy for all support and suggestions that you can offer. I know I’m going to need all the help I can get!

I will join in! I will attempt the 28th of Nov-Christmas. We shall see if I can get creative. With my current length my options are slim, but I may be able to play with accessories to help with the differing styles 🤔

I'll join for Advent!

I don't know if I will post a picture everyday though, but maybe, every once in awhile. I'll do a post for what hairstyle I did for that day if, I can't get around to it.

I’ve started to make a list so I can mark off the different styles I’ve tried…I’ve just started to realise that 28 is a lot!

I know there was a link to different buns and things somewhere on the LHC, but I’m not finding it with a quick search…can anyone help me find it? I’m in need of ideas!

I'll try this out for some new hairstyles. But I need ideas. Yeah, a thread link would be great if anyone can find it. I'll try some new buns and braids suitable for the winter weather

Oh, I’m silly - I just found a whole pile of links under the LHC Thesaurus post at the top of the forum! I’m a bit slow sometimes!

Welcome to the challenge, JasminCat - the more the merrier and hopefully we’ll inspire each other with new ideas.

There's also the whole Hairstyle of the Month (https://forums.longhaircommunity.com/forumdisplay.php?f=48) subforum, with examples of a lot of the thesaurus styles.

I should try and do this to spice things up, but I've been feeling so lazy about my hair lately, I'm certainly not going to commit. But maybe it'll get me to do at least a few random days as a result!

Good thinking! I haven't checked out the Hairstyle of the Month for a while. Time to visit I think!

And yes, join us for random days even if you don't want to commit to a full 12 or 28 days :)

ETA: I just found this thread too https://forums.longhaircommunity.com/showthread.php?t=137377 - I love trying to work from written instructions...adds the element of challenge that a video doeasn't!

And we’re off!

On the first Sunday of Advent I did some sort of coronet updo. Perfect for wearing to Handel’s Messiah. It’s not perfect (I’m talking about you, random strand at the back) but for a first go it’s not too bad. Dying the silver streaks a fun colour would make it even better!

Shorty89 - so gorgeous and glossy! I can’t imagine how you keep track of all the strands in a 5 strand braid!

Today was clean-up and clear-out day at school, so for day 4 I decided to keep it simple with a braided cinnabun…but added a pretty fork to help hold it in place (because Lory’s stolen all but one of my spin pins!)

Gibson tuck for day 5 of my Advent Hairstyle Challenge. I’ve got a bit more hair than last time I tried this style, so it took a lot more tucking than I expected!
It’s a bit more formal than I’d normally wear to school, but hey - it is the second last day before holidays!

Thank you for the lovely comment! It’s funny that you should say that about a signature style - for a number of years I was always doing the side rolls with either a ponytail or some sort of stick bun.

I really must get some flexi 8 type toys - that one looks so lovely in your hair. It’s amazing how much it dresses up a simple bun.

I completely hear you on struggling and failing with a new hairstyle in the time constraints of getting ready for a busy day. That was my Friday morning, day 5, and no matter what I tried to do to make a lace rope braid at the side, it just looked like a messy roll. So I gave in, just rolled the sides like I did for the Gibson tuck then clipped in the snood I made. Sometimes you’ve just gotta go with what works!

Thanks illicitlizard - I crocheted the snood last year, mostly as a practice for a 1940s beaded version I wanted to make. I never found a reason to wear this before now. And hey, this is one way to get into the holiday spirit!

Today, it’s First day of holidays hair!
Basically for day 7 of my advent challenge I’m just lounging around home & doing chores…so the hair is just one of my go-to stick buns that I call a Peony Bun (it’s probably got a proper name, but since it’s just a random way I worked out that will hold with a stick, I’ll pretend I was the first to do it!).

Curl frizz is courtesy of Lory who decided she needed a bath in the sink while I was washing my face :p

I was out doing errands with my husband (my photographer) and hoping to find a nice background in the store because I didn't want him out in the cold. I settled for a quick snap in Walmart but I can hardly believe that they had NO holiday decorations up at all! Oh well. I love the Jamie Leigh updo because it's so easy and looks like some effort was made.

Here’s yesterday & today - simple stuff. I ended up with some nice waves after my wash, so I wore it down yesterday (for as long as I could cope in the heat). Today it’s what I like to call an “outie braid” (AKA Dutch Braid). It’s been ages since I tried one of these on my own hair (and definitely not easy with a lorikeet taking an interest!)

Unfortunately I can’t get my whole hair length in shot with my current camera setup

And a gratuitous “flicking my long hair” around video just because I could! (You might need to click on the link, I don’t think it plays on the forum).

Nice, bokeh - that looks gorgeous on your hair! Don’t you just love complicated looking updo that are actually easy?! I’m hoping to discover a few of these throughout the challenge. And incidentally - how have you discovered a store without Christmas decorations? Everything’s been tinsel here for some time :xmas:

Second Sunday of Advent, and I thought it was time to go for Advent colours…who says you can’t have liturgical hair?
Here I’ve got purple parandas in a couple of French lace braids.
It was rather cute in the supermarket earlier, when I heard behind me a little voice full of breathless awe say, “Wow mum - look at that lady’s hair!” Makes it all worth it!

Oh my, Shorty89 - that Maid Marian braided do is AWESOME! I’m completely caught up in wanting to know how you did it.

Day…ummm…12? Not sure…anyway today I tried an upside down French braid leading up to the plaited bun. It took 4 starts to get the braid right (but I blame Lory for that - she distracted me and made me forget where I was adding hair!) So, after all that effort, I decided to leave it frizzy and “romantic” to hide the imperfections.

I'm not doing this 12 days in a row, just when I remember, lol! I've managed two new buns so far.

I did manage a somewhat successful Milkmaid Braid but as soon as it was finished I realized that the big hard bun on the back of my head wasn't going to work for the OBGYN appointment that I was heading for so I removed the millions of pins and took it down! I'll probably not try that style again because I hate styles that require a lot of pins.

Day 2: Braided bun with Winter flexi-8

Day 3: Made Marian beehive with two poinsetta pins. Shorty89 those are some very festive and intricate winter buns! Perfect for the holidays! Your braiding skills are impressive!

I love the upside down braid. I can never do them without tangles. There used to be a tutorial about it. Basically, you do four braids on the four quadrants of the head (upper left, upper right, bottom left, bottom right). The you take one of the top ones and start to spiral it, sort of like a cinnamon bun. It takes a lot of bobby pins for me to hold the initial circle part. Keep wrapping around, going just outside the previous part until you run out of braid. Then, do the other upper braid, wrapping in the opposite direction. AFter that, take the bottom braid on the opposite side and wrap it around again int he opposite direction. Finally, take the last braid and wrap it around in the original direction. Left braids get wrapped clockwise while right braids get wrapped counter-clockwise. I hope that sort of makes sense.

Thanks Shorty - I think I get what you’re saying. I might give it a go one of these days - I’m still looking for more styles to fill my 28 days of Advent.

Today, day 13 and it’s a bit of a two-fer, and a reminder to do my research if I’m trying something vaguely historical.
I found a text tutorial for an Elling Woman Braided Bun. I thought it sounded simple, but as I did it I really didn’t like it. I gave up and played with the braid I’d made and came up with this odd tucked braid updo.

https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/51737402185_17bb58d375.jpg (https://flic.kr/p/2mPRHaB)Day 13 - Elling Woman Inspiration (https://flic.kr/p/2mPRHaB) by Yesterday- Today (https://www.flickr.com/photos/191184884@N02/), on Flickr

I then did a bit more research into the Elling Woman’s Braid. (ref- http://igorsbelltower.blogspot.com/p/the-elling-woman-is-danish-bog-body-and.html ) There is more to it than the initial written tutorial I found suggested. So, I should have included more twisted strands in the lower plait and probably twisted the bun differently than what I initially tried.

This second pic (lower plait twisted around the upper plait) is more like I think the Elling Woman’s updo might have looked like before it came loose and was preserved in the bog.

https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/51736510171_3443d9112f.jpg (https://flic.kr/p/2mPM914)Day 13 - Elling Woman Inspiration (https://flic.kr/p/2mPM914) by Yesterday- Today (https://www.flickr.com/photos/191184884@N02/), on Flickr

Whatever the truth is, I like my second attempt much better and might try it again in the future to see if this becomes a semi-regular updo in my arsenal.

That's a really interesting braid. You can tell the story of it's history when you get compliments on it! It looks very intricate. You've inspired me to give it a go sometime soon! Isn't it great to find a new updo for your rotation?

I was about to put my hair up into a Masara but then I liked the Dutch braid (an outie braid as PeonyBlue would say) that forms the base of the Masara and soooo decided to leave it down.

Love the little gemstones you have in the braid…highlights it beautifully! But I’ve never heard of a Masara, so I’ll have to look it up to see what you were planning - now I’m curious :)

I didn’t manage to post yesterday (server was busy the one chance I got) so you get both looks now!

Day 14 marked the halfway point of my Advent Hairstyling journey. I decided to continue with historical hair, and tried for an Italian Renaissance hair taping look. I followed a Morgan Donner YouTube video for help, and managed it second try! This one uses no elastics, no pins or clips, just the ribbon to hold it all in place. As always, Lory was very “helpful” (or at least giving an opinion…usually loudly!)

If you find more little sparkly things let me know - I’m wanting more since I really only have the pearl ones I’ve used for a few shots now…and I have no idea where to look!

Yesterday - Can you tell I’ve been rewatching the Pride & Prejudice 1995 miniseries? What better inspiration than Jane Bennet for day 16!

And for today, day 17 - I’ve moved on from Austen Regency to “A Room with a View” Edwardian…though I didn’t go as big as a true Gibson girl inspired Edwardian would (and certainly not as floofy as Helena B-C did). However, the bun was big enough to need the big sleeves to balance it out! Added bonus, my boater hat finally sits like it should!

Thanks shorty, bokeh & Noetsie - Edwardian styles have always been a favourite of mine, and I’d been dying to try a proper Gibson girl look :)

Two more days, and two more styles:
Day 18 of Advent, and a woven bun. I tried it first with two chopsticks, but it looked like I was growing antenna! Smaller sticks got lost in all the hair, but made for quite a neat bun.

Getting photos in during a busy day is hard! The only reason I’m managing is that it’s school holidays and I have time, since we didn’t get to catch up with family overseas like we’d originally hoped.

I have a soft spot for all things celtic, and of Celtic spirituality! So I approve you choice in so many ways! :o

Day 23, and after an epic fail at attempting a 5 strand Dutch braid, and then trying to do a Masara that someone mentioned earlier in this thread (that was a big fail too), I just wrapped the plait around the Dutch braid and tried to pretty it up! Nearly there! Day 26 and I attempted a “corset braid” for “O Christmas Tree”
Lori was much happier with tree themed hair…she even helped decorate!

That looks so good! I need to upload photos but I have two more days done. They're not all Christmas themed but oh well.

Day 7: Three strand heidi braids with Christmas ribbon

Day 8: Pinless braided bun (I think) with ribbon

Day 9: equalibrium bun

Yes, Pheony is very inspirational.

From one long hair to another, I love everybody's hairstyles!

Welp! Advent is almost over. I can't wait for the Christmas season to start! :happydance:

This! So true! It makes me feel so drab with my basic braid and/or bun, but I love seeing all your fancy ones!

Aww - thanks for the lovely comments you guys, and merry Christmas! And SparrowWings - fully half of my 28 days were simple, and I have to say, after doing all this the simple styles are still my favourites and definitely not drab! And truth is, after wresting with ribbons and braids, I’ll be happy not having to deal with anything complex for a while!

Anyway, here are my last two looks: Christmas Eve, and I polished up my “halo” (crown braid sewn up with a ribbon) for “Hark the herald angels sing”. Was pretty impressed that it was the last carol of our Christmas Eve service.

Christmas day, and I repeated the joy of my favourite festive style (and one that seemed well liked by my Facebook crowd), so I bring you “Joy to the World” :) As an added bonus - my festive dress was finished in time as well (but I’ll show that off in the sewing thread).

Ah, I was swept up with Christmas and visitors and missed the last of the pictures on this wonderful thread! PeonyBlue, I have been very impressed with your styling skills and all the variety of festive updos! Special mention to the theme "Hark! The Herald Angels Sing" with the crown braid sewn with a ribbon. That style is a favorite of mine and it is so cute on you! I am growing to classic because I hope to achieve that style when my hair is long enough.

Shorty89, I love your last photo drop! I can't pick a favorite because they are all lovely!

I hope everyone has a lovely new year. Happy growing!

Thanks, bokeh - it’s been fun challenging myself, but I’m happy it’s over! The crown braid is worth growing your hair for, tho…I loved it, even if I wouldn’t bother to do it that often.

Shorty89 - I completely agree with bokeh…so many lovely pics and suck beautifully shiny hair! I’m so envious. You guys really are making me want to get some Flexi-8 type toys…and I really love that braid you did in the first pic.

I'll probably do this for the 12 days from Christmas to Epiphany. I have time off work for most of those days so I could actually fiddle with my hair more.

I should probably add that you don't have to do them all in a row. Last year (And this year), I spread mine out over December.

Well, I'm a day later than I'd planned, but here are my first 2 buns. A LWB held with an Elymwold stick and today's style is, I think, A modified logroll held with a large Ficcare Maximas.

Can hardly believe it’s been a whole year since I did the challenge - but I’ve been getting the memories on my Facebook page for the last month to remind me how much fun it was. I’m so glad you resurrected it again this year…I’ve been too busy this year to take part, but maybe next year I’ll join in again. It’s been lovely to see the styles you’re all coming up with :)

I'm glad you did. I've had fun with it again this year. I always need help breaking out of the Lazy wrap and Nautilus bun rut.

Day 12: Interlaced braids. I added mini Christmas ornaments to it but I don't know if I took a picture at that point. I have one before I put them in.
