View Full Version : Which side to part your hair for an asymmetrical face

I have an asymmetrical face (most people do), but mine is quite pronounced. I'm cool with it, it's just "me" and there's nothing I can do to change it anyway.
I was reading an article about it, and the author was suggesting ways to balance the face and one idea was to part the hair on the opposite side. To explain: if my chin points to the left, then I should part my hair on the right side so that the fuller part of my hair falls on the left side of my face. The thing is, I am currently doing the opposite!
So, I was thinking, I will try parting on the right side and see if anybody notices. It's going to take some "training" of my hair as my natural part is on the left, but I already did this today and I really like how my hair looks a bit fuller with this new part :) I actually have nice ringlets underneath where my hair used to fall which are now exposed and rediscovered.
My question is: do you part your hair according to your facial asymmetry (if you have any asymmetry) or do you just part where it wants to part?

So - these days I've been parting centre because my evolving texture seems to be asking for that.. but for years before I maintained a modest side part to balance out mild facial asymmetry.
The right side of my face 'drags' downward a bit, so I would part on my right side and sweep the bulk of hair to the left - the extra visual weight on the left seemed to balance everything out. I also found that my part naturally settled a bit to the right anyway, so it felt quite natural to me.
Even now my centre part drifts right a bit, but funnily enough as I get older the asymmetry of my features seems to be evening out.

Hm, I know my left eye is higher than my right eye and I part on the left, but I’ve just kinda always done it. I don’t know if I did that on purpose or not!

I know I look better with a side part but I'm not sure about balancing my face. I do sometimes switch sides on my part.

I have always parted my hair on my "good" side, since that's the side I'd like to be seen more. :)

I have been scared off side partings from my emo-phase days where I just tried to achieve the biggest fringe possible. But I used to part my hair slightly to the left, and my left eye is slightly smaller? So I think I was doing it wrong! Now my hair is pleased with a middle parting so I just leave it at that. :P

I generally go for a left part or almost center left part. My hair naturally wants to part the other way, however my right eat is larger than my left so I try to balance it by having more hair on that side.
ETA: My face is also quite long and oval, so I never brush my hair straight back when bunning or braiding. It makes me face look very long and thin.

I have an asymmetrical face shape but, actually, I prefer to part my hair in the center. I don't know if it's because of my hair type, but if I part it in another way, it will fall on my face when I wear my hair down and it would just cover my face.

I just part it where it wants to part, which is on the left side. I have never even considered taking the symmetry of my face into account. To me, personally, that is taking things way too far. But that's me, I'd rather keep it simple, I'm quite basic/simple, and I just go with the flow like that.
You do you, Rini. If it makes you feel better, by all means, do it. Go for it. But if your hair says: nope, just do what you always did. :)

Not sure on face symmetry or lack there of but I suit my hair more parted to the left or straight back off my face while it's short, but longer and all one length a centre part is better

Yes!!! I definitely have a side that photographs better. My "good" side if you will :D I have been parting on the "bad" side though, which is why the article was so interesting to me. I've been doing it all wrong! hahaha
