My hair has flyways which looks like it is slightly damaged although it is in need of a cut but i dont think this will fix the issue straight away.
My hair is also not the most shiny of hair

Girls, what do you use on your hair to make it shine and what do you recommend i do about flyways!? Could be possible breakage?

Also lastly what do you use to add volume as mines very flat.

I’m new hear and looking to get some advice as many of you have beautiful hair!

sorry for all the questions :)

Hi Mish! It would help if you added what type of hair you have and some more details about your routine, length, goals, hair care history, etc.

I can say that even the healthiest of hair will have flyaways... they do not necessarily mean damage. Consider, you are constantly sprouting new hairs at the root since you are constantly shedding. So flyaways are inevitable. I notice mine are more noticeable on wash day than other days. But also I’m sure enough of mine are damage related from breakage from detangling so summer 2019 I switched to a wide tooth comb, about six months ago I purchased a tangle teezer, and more recently I finger detangle prior to TT to prevent breakage from tangles.

For shine many people on here including myself use oils. I’ll distribute a couple drops of oil in my hair after washing while damp and this helps to seal in some moisture, and bonus adds softness and shine.

I don’t worry about volume anymore because my hair is up almost always except when drying and sometimes for a bit in the evening but I used to brush upside down and this would help with volume.

Hope this helps!

Welcome, Mishj91. We don't know what type your hair is and how you care for it, but those details matter.

If your hair is naturally deficient in texture like mine, there's not much you can do without harsh measures to fake volume. If your hair just appears straight because of the products you use and the way you handle it, those things are easily fixable. The more you read on this forum, the more you will learn about how to discover your natural hair type and how best to encourage any natural curl and shine.

Flyaways are normal and impossible to avoid. You can quit being concerned about those. You're almost certainly the only one who notes yours. I use bobbies to pin them where they belong.

Just start reading some of the threads that interest you. We've all learned that way.

Hi, I get flyaways all of the time! But that doesn't mean it's damaged. It could just mean you either need to clarify or use a mask or a deep conditioner to moisturize those ends.

Hello my routine is i wash my hair every other day sometimes I use drugstore shampoo and conditioner but have used expensive brands to like joico, redken anti snap, kerastase many others, i should probably keep to one but haven’t found a good one yet and haven’t seen much difference in the expensive and the drugstore. I’m yet to find one that really works well. I do coconut oil treatments every so often and buy all different hair treatment/masks. I use a tangle tweezer for my hair and also have a wet brush. I do occasionally straighten my hair but this is rare and when i come out of bath or shower i let my hair dry naturally. My natural hair is sort of straight/wavy it has a slight wave to it. With the flyways some of it could be from my son, i have a 2 year old son who is constantly pulling on my hair :) i should probably wear it up more often although this has been happening before i had my son to so might just be new hair growth.

What is the best shampoo and conditioner you girls like?

Before my focus was on gaining length and i didn’t get hair trims at hair salon but did trim myself now I have achieved my ideal hair length i think i will get regular trims.

I decided to grow my hair out after many horrific salon experiences i had my hair cut into the bob and grew it quite long but then had it cut of again due to my hair thinning out in pregnancy it has now grown very long to bottom of my back. I’m now just trying to get healthier hair than gain length.

I can't see your pictures.

When my flyaways bother me, I spray a tiny amount of hairspray on my hands and glide them over my head. Don't use hairspray directly on your flyaways, it just makes them very sticky.

I can't help you with your other concerns - my hair is also flat and I've struggled a lot trying to obtain more volume in my hair, but it always falls flat in a few minutes and I damage it for nothing. I know it's not the answear you hoped for, but it's always best to like the hair you have and not fight with your texture or lack of it.

I’m directly under the light in these pictures so the flyways are more noticeable than in everyday.

I really think your hair looks fine or nice in the first photo! I don't see anything wrong with it. BTW, I also love the length as well. That is my goal length for the end of next year! My favorite shampoos and conditioners are: Pantene Pro-V Daily Moisture Renewal and Garnier Fructis Triple Nutrition and Damage Eraser, and Herbal Essence Hello Hydration Conditioner.

That looks perfectly normal to me. It's just what hair will do. Flyaways are hairs that really "stick out".

The ones here are just near your "base" not even outside of the totality of the hair, nothing that a bit of leave-in conditioner or a light oiling (say 1/2 drops spread through palms and carefully smoothed over the entire length) can't fix. :flower:

Flyaways are totally normal unless you have an excessive amount from actual damage leading to breakage. From your photos they just look normal :) so my recommendation is just to embrace natural hair behaviour! New growth is good, because they are your future long hairs :D

Shine ... some hair is naturally shiny, some hair isn't. Some is only shiny in direct light, which yours is in the photos.

As for volume, you can try washing upside-down, shaking it out upside-down before you air-dry it, clipping the top part up while drying to give it some lift, air-drying overnight, brushing it upside-down, or anything else you can think of that involves defying gravity  but if you try any upside-down suggestions, be aware of how your hair reacts to it, whether it tangles when you flip it the right way up or not. (Out of that list my own hair only approves of the overnight air-drying, but it also prefers not to be combed for at least 3-4 days after washing, so you see every head of hair is different.)

One thing that occurs to me is that it would be good to make sure you're not using all protein-heavy products, and look into moisturising methods such as double conditioning (CWC or WCC) - if the flyways are due to textured hair needing more moisture, that will help. And if not, your hair will still appreciate it because most hair has good results with more moisture anyway, especially hair with any texture (waves or curls) ;)

And welcome!
