I am going to do this this year!

Belgrade Beauty and Pisinoe, you have such beautiful hair!

I had a rather unsuccessful run with this thread a couple years ago. This time I am aiming for some consistency. Always on day 1 of hair wash AND after brushing it, not encouraging curl. Seems the best way to measure progress.

I think I will try to wear this tank top for my monthly length shots until I get to APL, the scooped 'collar' of it is a very nice mini milestone between CBL and APL.
Very happy with my progress over the last few months, it has been growing quite fast :inlove:
I always do collages with side to side comparisons between months, makes it so much easier to really see the growth!

Alright, let’s do it! Delighted to be in such lovely company. :)

I was contemplating only doing seasonal length checks but maybe it will be good for another year of monthly photos. I’m hoping that by the end of 2021 - with one trim max - I’ll be at a length I’m happy with!

Here’s my late December rather-staticky starting point - my apologies to those who’ve seen it elsewhere already. I think I’m about halfway between hip and bcl?

Not sure if I will post every month....trying the benign neglect - watched pot never boils method...but need to start somewhere near the 1st. not a great picture, but last cut was last February and think I've hit shoulder length in back - sides still need to catch up to where I can make a full pony....but measured the back at 18 1/2 just now.

https://i.imgur.com/OCvLmWG.jpg

will go a while longer without any trims as I don't want to mess with anything until I can get the full pony deal....then I hopefully won't look like such a wild man on the loose.

ETA: was so intent on trying to get the pic, that I didn't realize the back looked so broken up.....just didn't pull all the back around from the front...lol

Beautiful hair, everyone! It's fun to see people of such different lengths and hair types together in one challenge/thread.

I was debating about whether or not to join this challenge as taking a length shot by myself isn't easy and I'm getting a late start, but I've really liked seeing the 2020 thread so figured I should try my best to be part of it this year. The best photo I got happened to be with unwashed and unbrushed hair, so please forgive the stringiness. Maybe there will be photography improvement in addition to hair growth as the year goes on!

rhosyn_du Your waves look so beautiful! :blossom:

xanthochromia Your hair looks nice, to me it looks brushed already. :p One thing I like about short hair is that it is too short to get many tangles (at least for my hair type), so it always looks brushed or purposefully "messy". I look forward to seeing your progress!

y'all make me blush...well almost. normally it is a lot more wavy, but for work when I wash in the morning, I put a bandanna on to 'contain' it and it makes the top much straighter than normal. once it is long enough for a real ponytail, I hope to not smooth it too much, plus then can start trimming a little to get a nicer hemline all around. then on to real lengths hopefully.

Thank you very much. I am lucky that the hemline looks usually thick in the photos :). The braid shows the truth. There is a huge difference between the hair on the top and the hair on the lower 30 cm.

Not sure if I qualify because I won't be growing this year, but I think it would be cool to see the thickness travel down my back.
I didn't manage to get a picture with proper lighting, so here are the best candidates from the "too bright" and "too dark" categories ;)

I love watching people's thickness travel down their length!

I previously measured my hair thickness down my length, at each major milestone, to see if my thickness travelled down as it grew (it did). If you enjoy comparing numbers, maybe that is something you could do too. :D

WavyWannabe

I think I can call APL. Took a couple of different pics as well, and every time my hair ended on the light blue stripe.:D
I needed to start cropping my pics a bit larger, that's a fun mini-milestone in itself!

Congrats, NicoleLionne - looks like APL to me!

Here are mine - it's hard to compare because my hair is much 'flippier' in the earlier photo, and also because I evidently still suck at taking photos of the back of my head. Improving at that might be a fun challenge in and of itself this year!

Beautiful hair everyone, and some people really seem to grow fast!

It really is hard to take consistent pictures, but the good news is that I've asked my SO to do it so hopefully they will be more consistent going forward. As it is, I think the angle, zoom, unbrushed vs. brushed, and lighting all make it look like my hair grew more than it did. I'm still hoping I'll be CBL and call shoulder by the April photo

February 2nd (in Australia) 2021. Jan was 31.5 - Feb almost 32 inches. 1/8th under. Almost an inch growth since using only rice water. Last wash I added "Fo-Ti" (also known as He Shou Wu) boiled and then simmered for 20 minutes, let cool, drink 1 cup and added the rest to the rice water. Not enough time yet to know if it has any benefits. One of the benefits of the rice water only wash is that my hair is basically Teflon - no such thing as knots and comb just flows through it like water, yet pins and hair sticks still hold it up without falling out.

I wore a dress with a waist (HA!) which shows how fat I am across the back (yuck) but this is definitely hip length, right?

So many people with 2a/2b seem surprised to find that out because of how they style their hair. I'm sure you'll be able to straighten it out! To respond to your earlier comment, CBL is 17-17.5" on me and my hair is currently 15.75", so it'll be a bit of a race to get there by the end of March but we'll see! I just started actually measuring and tracking on a spreadsheet because I really don't know how fast my hair grows.

Oxalis, your hair has so much life to it and I agree that it looks like waves are trying to come out! It's nice to have another person a bit ahead of me on this journey so I have some idea of what my growth might look like in a couple of months :)

well from the front hairline, the tape measure says about 19 1/2 doesn't seem that long, but then again the ends curl up like me with a good book in front of the fire....

The angle always makes a BIG difference in the way how long your hair looks. I can make my hair look shorten then APL but also waist lenght (I am actually a cm or two short of BSL) depending on the angle I take.
Measuring it will always be the most accurate way I think.

It's very hard to try and do a picture in roughly the same way as a month or a couple months ago. I mean, that alone is a chore!

I agree with that. That's why I always end up taking a multitude of photos.

FWIW I also have cut open a seed packet and have it taped to a window so that I can put my phone in it and always have the camera in the same spot when I take a photo. So, really I just have to try to stand in the same place at the same position...

For GordonMurphella, here (https://imgur.com/a/UWwUEkj) is an album of the various length shots I took. In the ones where I am wearing the flannel I hadn't washed my hair. Seeing that I really needed to wash it, I did so then took a new photo with the fuchsia top. I didn't like how it made the photos difficult to line up though so I finally switch back into the dress I was wearing when I took my chop photo last month.

My hem does move a bit which will happen with any series of length shots taken in one day but it hovers around that same white line in all of them. Really, if my aim was to be dishonest, I could have just used the photo with my unwashed hair since the weight is making it look even longer.

I don't think my hair is as wavy as you, but what I do is comb it all straight when it's slightly wet and take pics just before it's dried, this helps me get an accurate length. Plus I get my boyfriend to take photos from ALLL the angles

I think it's partially because of the waves clumping together near the ends! Would you visually prefer it, for the length shorts, to kind of compress the hair at the back (instead of letting it fall naturally, which kind of spreads it out and makes it look thinner)?

Here's my monthly shot. Cameras/lights all have different opinions on my hair color (most often either bright red or muted brown) and because of cinnabun waves I can't really see my "true" hemline (not that wavy hair has any "true regular fixed hemline" :P), but here it is.

I never realized I had replies from my post a couple weeks ago until now, I haven't been here much lately ahaha.

you know I think your hair is starting to have more body, who knows maybe you'll be a 1c by the time it is apl!, it certainly seems I'm going to be 2b :/ but whatever I'll learn to beat the wave out of submission

I do hope my waves will return somewhat, but at the very least I have come up with many ways to get heatless waves! It'll be easier to do when I get some more length, too.
I'm sure that as yours grows longer too, you might be able to find heatless straightening methods!
I've heard some hair products aren't liked in the curly community because they make a lot of curly/wavy hair "flat" but that'd be perfect for you since you don't want it wavy!

Oxalis, your hair has so much life to it and I agree that it looks like waves are trying to come out! It's nice to have another person a bit ahead of me on this journey so I have some idea of what my growth might look like in a couple of months :)

Thank you so much! And that's cool, I'm so glad to help!!! I know I do the same thing, I've been looking at all the APL hair lately and thinking about how it'll look on me this time around...

OMG Oxie....run....in a couple years your hair will have grown into it's body and overtake you completely....lol actually, that seems like a fun thing for one's hair to do!!!

O.R.

:run: :rollin:

I'm always amazed by how quickly your hair grows. Tell us your secret, please .

Thank you!! I don't even know what my secret is honestly. I think it might just be hormonal lol my body's been pretty crazy this last year...

That looks like a lot of growth baan. Nice job.

I need to post my February picture but it most likely will be shorter or just approaching hip again since I did a bit of a trim to even the ends. Aaaaaaaaagggh I wanna grow beyond hip already! :(

Sammich
February 21st, 2021, 08:09 AM
So I did a 1/2inch or more trim on the 8th so it looks like
My hair grew back to where I had cut it but my hair grows so unevenly! I swear it was a proper v when I had trimmed it, annoyingly but eh! I give up on trims now since my hair likes to grow how it likes. Here’s from 22nd January, 2nd February to February 21st. I couldn’t decide on what date to start derp.

I give up on trying to keep my hemline straight/in a proper v! Bahhh! Haha. I’ll just let it grow it’s way it wants to. It seems to have gone back to the length it was before I trimmed it at least. Kinda.

Here’s a different angle of it today.

Reminder on posting “nude” photos: our guidelines are no visible nipples, butt cracks, or pubic hair. This is applied to all people equally including artwork. I carefully crop or censor photos of my ironing board as it features topless cowboys. *wink*

Hi everyone, popping in here. i haven't cut my hair since my big-ish chop in June 2020. I had my daughter take a length photo of my hair, today. She's a bit taller than me, so the picture is kind of from above. I just can't manage to get my picture in here anymore, but here's the link to my blog where I will update my hair, hopefully on a monthly basis.

Hehe, I have heard the sulfur contents of onions is supposed to be good for hair growth and supposedly, have helped balding men produce some hair again.
That said, I don't know how much of this is objectively and scientifically true.
But it doesn't hurt me to try and I tend to be extra with finding "natural" methods to help my monthly growth reach its max potential. I don't do onion juice. I just chop the onions, mash it and heat it with a carrier oil in a stove so that the onions will infuse.

A lot of people hate the smell of onions, but I personally find it delicious so it doesn't bother me. ;D

What carrier oil do you use? How do you use it? As a DT or more of a daily oil like sweet almond would be used?

I currently use a sunflower carrier oil, but I'm going to change it up to grapeseed oil after I finish this batch. Sweet almond oil should be fine. I just have an aversion to vegetable oil for some reason.

Awesome growth! :)

For my hairtype, I found with shorter lengths the ends can look a lot shorter one month because of flippy ends, but the next month I could gain enough hair weight to have those flippy ends lay flatter, thus making my hair look a lot longer. I found my flippy ends annoying, so I liked when this would happen. :p

Hexana your hair is looking so healthy and thick at the ends! And yeah, I know, my waist length is actually kind of short by LHC standards because of my non-existent torso haha

Xanthochromia congratulations on calling shoulder! Amazing growth this year so far :)

ArtOfNoot Yay!!! Looking forward to seeing your consistent length shots! Love the blonde streaks in your hair too :o

I am a bit late this month but guys, your progress is awesome!

Here are my February and March

https://i.ibb.co/Z1zPmjs/Feb-Mar-21-2.jpg

I love your color!

So much beautiful growth! Hexana, it looks like everything caught up to the long section, and your hair texture and color both are so pretty! Sasha fox, put the photos next to each other if you can! It makes such a big difference to see growth in these short time periods, I think.

I love seeing everyone progress here! I especially enjoy the different hair colours and textures, it's nice seeing such a variety. Not only that, but I realised not many curlies join these threads probably because the change is barely noticeable, but I think it's interesting to see how one's hair changes throughout the year :) I've taken pictures, but I've forgotten to post them here as I've been mostly lurking these past months :p I have yet to find a good spot to take the pictures in the same angle

(I also planned to take monthly "stretched" length pics, but I missed February, right now I'm not sure if I'll try to keep taking them monthly or maybe every other month)

My hair is actually growing pretty fast, but due to inconsistencies in texture it can be difficult to see. :)

Hi Lovely, welcome! Most people post their photos towards the beginning of the month - I'm a little contrary because I usually post them around the 20th to align with the solstice/equinox threads. ;)

There's a thread somewhere about taking good hair photos, but my strategy has been to find a good spot (that can be used repeatedly), prop up my phone, set the self timer, and go for it.

I think you can join without any problem. The most interesting comparison is at the end of the year, and you will have materials from 10 months for that. It's a great set.

There aren't any set rules for this thread, but as per the title you should try to take pictures every month around the same date.

Here are the tips that have been shared in previous threads:

* Wear a t-shirt/sweater/dress/other with horizontal stripes, or some sort of design, for an easier visual measurement of the monthly growth. You could also draw some lines on a white shirt and write the inch/cm measurement of each line. If you're feeling creative, you could draw lines on your back to designate milestones (SL, APL, BSL, WL, HL, TBL, Classic, Knee, etc.). If you don't have a striped garment (and you don't feel like showing us your artistic nude backs), simply wearing the same shirt for each picture helps for comparison.

* Try to pick a designated area of your house/apartment/garden/hobbit hole/other to take the pictures in every time, to compare your growth over the months. Changing up the background scenery in the pictures can make the growth hard to tell sometimes.

* Try to set your camera/phone on the same surface for each picture, like a table, shelf, book pile, aquarium, etc. Try to memorise the angle where your photos are taken, and position yourself at a similar distance every time. Use a countdown timer setting if your camera has one, and if you use the zoom feature, set the zoom level in the same place every time.

* It's totally fine to join midway through the year. The sooner you join, the sooner you will have an amazing photo strip of your progress. Jump in!

* It's nice to comment on other people's posts in this thread! This type of thread can turn into people posting pics and not commenting, or into nice friendly type posts. We all enjoy the photos but we all enjoy acknowledgement too and it's nice to check in together.

And here's a pretty good thread about taking pictures of your own hair from the back (the once baanoo mentioned):
