Maybe delve into the natural herb section of this board, and get some of the FAQ and other threads under your belt also. Just a suggestion. Indian grocers should have it, yes. :) But there's a few shops that are popular (online) and those are somewhere under that part of the forum.

tips and tricks on the best ways to maintain your beard

Hello.

i want to ask, what products do you use for your beards?

Surprisingly little actually.

I'm going to craft this sentence very carefully, try to make every word count.

Products do not make hair healthy. For the most part, they are protective or assistive in helping healthy hair remain healthy.

Which means, my routine would likely not work for you. And vice versa.

Considering your questions, it might be prudent to ask if you're having problems. And if so, what problems?

One thing that a lot of guys don't take into account, myself included until comparatively recently, is that beard hair and head hair have very little in common. Even down to color, texture, and porosity.

i appreciate its mostly women here but dont be shy, if you got a beard give us a holla! lool

Holla!

I made my husband a beard oil and a mister scented of oatmeal stout.

My boyfriend takes a lot care of its beard. His routine is shampoo- conditioner - oil or oil and cream, sometimes moustache's wax.
A product he very likes is this conditioner:

just wondering anyone know where to get cheap mirrors from?

i cut my own hair so i came across this the self cut system, looks good but its expensive and i cant justify the price just for an led three way mirror
heres their website if you want to check out the product https://selfcutsystem.com/

so i came across diy ways of making your own self cut system

Ahah, all this brand has good ingredients (OT: this (https://www.ecco-verde.com/biofficina-toscana/active-conditioner-concentrate) is one of the most famous good conditioner in the italian organic haircare community, I only heard good things about this conditioner).
It works like an hair mask. I never tried on hair because it's pretty expensive (10 € for just 100 ml...) lol. It has a light consistence, like a light and liquid conditioner.
But I tried one of his beard oils like leave in and it worked very well :p

Try looking up Feye's self-cutting method. It's on a blog. No need for any mirrors at all!

He keeps his hair shaved/buzzed. I think he's only growing out his beard based on his introduction post. I don't think Feye's going to work too well for him

To OP, try looking for "trifold vanity mirrors" on Amazon, they're not exactly the same but could work the same way for self-cutting your hair.

Most likely. Very few guys who Self-Cut their own hair do complicated styles.

I did, but I'm a bit of an outlier.

And because of that I also understand how unnecessary the three-way mirror really is. Particularly for a short clipper cut. You are able to feel differences in length more accurately than you can see them.

The most I ever had to use was a handheld mirror to periodically check the back.

3-way is not necessary at all. Just position 2 mirrors across from one another, or hold one in your hand to check the back once in a while.

ETA/ That is how I cut my hair as a teen (15-17), with 2 mirrors, one of which was handheld. This was before Feye and the internet.

Hi there! My name is Dean and I'm working on growing my beard to terminal length! Currently, I wash with Dr. Bronners and condition with Live Bearded beard butter. I need to get some oil for it as well.

I use a wooden comb and wash my beard once a week, comb, and use beard butter. I'd like to add in oiling on a daily basis as my beard is pretty dry and needs the moisture!

hey dean, im saj! :D

honestly beard butters have been such a game changer for me...

i thinks due to the mixture of oils and especially shea butter

i made my own beard oils, beard balm and beard butter, very easy to do tbh...

you using any beard balm?

i use wooden combs too but im looking at some carbon fibre ones too which are also anti static

some of the bearded community on youtube seem to be raving about these chicago combs, they come in carbon fibre and i think stainless steel, you can even get engravings done apparently at an additional cost...
obviously im not affiliated with them and never used them just thought id mention them

one youtuber ive come across has got some very good knowledge regarding growing thicker longer hair at a fast rate,
her youtube channel is called curly proverbs this is her youtube channel

https://www.youtube.com/c/CurlyProverbz/videos

anyways she seem to recommend quite a few stuff for hair growth,
one of them being fenugreek (methi) im sure you asians probably have this laying around in the house...

anyways ive made the concoction of genugreek seeds and black seed blended into power then put into a jar mixed with multiple oils (of your choice),
going to use it soon hopefully

my aim is to grown a big beard as soon as possible and as quick as possible

tbh my hair grows fast anyways just that im very impatient lol! :p

I'm not using beard balm yet. I'll need to look more into it. I tend to go the lazy route with my routines (I always have, even when I was growing my hair out), so I probably won't end up using more than just the beard butter and oil, but it's worth a shot to try it out at some point!

I'm not taking any vitamins/supplements for hair growth either. I've tried them in the past and didn't notice a difference for me.

Its the dr. Bronners that is drying out your beard. That stuff is extremely harsh.
Look into some actual beard and face wash or use a gentle sulfate free shampoo.
You keep using Dr.B and eventually your beard hairs will start breaking.

Dr Bronners is pretty drying on the hair, is a very alkaline substance. I would use regular shampoo, which is pH balanced, but that's me. And I would not sleep on conditioner. Maybe see what that does for you?

It just amazes me that instead of thinking back to haircare and all I've learned here over the years, I just felt resigned to having a dry beard, haha.

I put some leave-in conditioner I had laying around in my beard yesterday and it feels better. It'll feel even better on Friday when my oil arrives. I'm taking a cue from my head hair and what worked best for it and trying my old favorite, Africa's Best Ultimate Herbal Oil. I also ordered some beard wash and conditioner that should also be arriving on Friday, just in time for my Saturday wash!

No you don't have to "accept" a dry beard! I've been following the channel "beardbrand", next to "Regal gentleman" and especially the first channel does a lot of beards besides haircuts (both channels I watch because mom cuts dad's hair and we need the info to do a good job).

I've seen plenty of awesome products for beards, they are out there, but just a bit of regular conditioner even, putting that in, I mean you had a leave-in, but that will do too if you're short on product for styling!

Good luck!!!

This is a fascinating thread. My boyfriend has a beard so this will be a useful resource.
At the moment all he really does is wash it with shampoo but the idea of beard brushing seems a good one.
He has tried coconut oil on it in the past but that made the hairs go hard and crunchy so he gave that up.

I just posted this in my blog, but I wanted to post it here since it's relevant! I'll be sure to post an update once I receive the other oil samples today!

I ordered 4 beard oil samples and got two of them yesterday from Beard Octane. I couldn't decide which one was my favorite (I got Texas Tea-Bay Leaf, Fir Needle, and Cedar and Roosevelt-Patchouli, Sandalwood, and Vetiver), so I asked my fiance who had a clear favorite (Roosevelt), which certainly helped, haha!

The other two oil samples from Artius Man are coming today! (The Logger: Outdoors with top notes of spruce and sage and Campfire-Woodsy meets smoky. Smells EXACTLY like being in the forest near a campfire. Very smoky). Now we get to do it all again tonight when he gets home! :D

Today, with a good-smelling oil (I'm wearing the one he doesn't like first to go through it, haha) layered with my beard butter that smells good, I smell good if I do say so myself! :p

ive got £10 amazon voucher to use so yea thought i'd get a replacement brush,
ive been eyeing up the denman ones on amazon, anyone used those before? they any good? thanks saj

I would try a tangle teezer. Or a wet brush (don't get the one for dry hair, that is with boar bristles) / straw brush. I suppose you can use any hair brush on the beard as well? Well those are very popular brushes.

yea i could use any brush thats half decent to be fair

whats the difference like between the tangle teezer and the denman brushes? which is better would you say?

Have you looked into finding a larger version of your cactus brush? I would also look into horn or wood combs, that's what my partner prefers to use for his beard.

A Denman? I can't use a Denman as it is not gentle and tugs at my scalp. You don't have that with a Tangle Teezer when you come across tangles, snarls and such. I would recommend the handheld Tangle Teezer (so without the handle).

Anyone Dye Their Beards With Henna etc?

i was just wondering does anyone dye their beards with henna etc?
i got some henna from lush which is very good quality as i used it years ago but i had jet black hair then so it didnt really do much in terms of colouring but really conditioned the hair and made it feel really nice

mrs is going to dye my beard with henna today as i've got a salt and pepper beard, in a nutshell a black and white beard but not many white hairs but they can be a bit annoying

well i say annoying but sometimes im okay with white hair in the beard and then sometimes im not, some of you gtuys my age in their mid thirties onwards might be able to relate?? i dont know

anyways this is the lush henna its called caca rouge, supposed to come out a red'ish colour, really want a nice red looking beard with the skinhead lol

https://uk.lush.com/products/hair/rouge-henna

as you can see on the link above its got a lot of really good ingredients in there too

anyways will keep you posted on how it goes :)

p.s cant seem to attach pics unfortunately

saj, you should be able to upload photos either in your LHC albums or a hosting site such as ImgBB (https://imgbb.com/). If you use the former, copy the BB code of the photo and paste it here; if you use the latter, copy the image URL (NOT the page URL!!) and paste it within the IMG tags.

I would certainly love to see a photo of how it turns out!

hey there @Ylva i was just saying to my mrs we forgot to take a before picture

by the way mrs is experienced in using henna as shes being doing it since shes young and a lot of indian women use it as its cultural and theyve been doing it for thousands of years,
anyways she guessed the amount we needed very well, i thought we'd nee more but yea just the right amount

i didnt do my moustache, i wanted to because i got few white hairs there but she didnt want me too, she said it might look good with the moustache being dyed, either way i like to keep a nice trimmed moustache so no biggie! :)

anyways yea i'll use third party site if i get a chance to upload pics, thanks for explaining it

by the way any ideas why we cant just click on the insert image icon and just upload pics directly? instead of having to add them to albums etc?

alright so..... i only left it in for like an hour and a half,
i know henna takes time for the colour to completely change over a matter of days due to oxidation,
anyways its already changed to a red/golden/brown sort of tint, no more grey hair

all in all happy6 so far :)

saj, Lush henna is not bad, but might not be the best in dye molecule-strength. Just FYI. Not a lot of people use Lush here, more do the regular "real" powder from great resources on the net. But if it works for you, then by all means. Henna usually comes in powder form and that is, to me anyway, much nicer to work with (just add hot water and stir), than melt a block of solid henna over a double boiler.

Not too long ago I posted a pic of in the pepper of salto threado. But would seem that I accidentally deleted it from the host site. So since this is the beard thread I thought I'd repost it.

But, I also recently shaved it off. So a before and after maybe? I look a little different...

Hmmm...:hmm: You know, Hexen, I kind of like the shaved look on you. The silver stubble look is quite nice. You have the best of both worlds, in that you can change up the look when you need a change.

But going back to the other....takes a bit of time :p

im hearing that jamila body art quality is a really good one

also i've read and watched on youtube about using all sorts of thing in with the henna like for example using apple cider vinegar, yoghurt, honey aloe vera powder etc etc

imo you rock the beard better then the clean shaven look,
i think you should grow it back, you look smarter and more mature imo,
then again ive always liked facial hair so no wonder im saying that and being a bit biased lol ;)

:D thanks.
I have no doubt that at some point I will grow it back. And even more so.
Maybe im just seeking out some sort of differential since I'll be turning 47 in 8 days lol.

I guess I didn't really used to enjoy being called "younger" looking.
Because as a younger fella, I was always told that I was older looking.
But Ive finally reached a point to where it's not such a bad thing to hear now I suppose :o

I would check out the "Recipes, Henna, and Herbal Haircare" forum. I think there is a FAQ there, if I'm not mistaken, on henna (and probably on where to get it). Plenty of talk of henna and people's experiences with various places.

It's been way too long for me, since I have done henna, so things change. I used to use the powder from a store called "De Tuinen", in my country, which later turned into "Essenza" and later into "Holland&Barrett". It wasn't bad henna. But a lot of people on the forum here that I mentioned have plenty of nice places to get it from!
