View Full Version : Should I trim my ends now? (Too much protein)

I went a little too strong on the protein a few weeks ago and my ends feel rough. I'm going to buy the 50:50 Hydrating Clarifying shampoo by Giovanni and try it together with an SMT the next time I wash my hair. The rest of my hair feels fine, maybe a little dry but it could be worse. It's the ends that feel rough or "too strong" if that makes sense. I'm not experiencing any breakage but I'd like my hair to have more elasticity.

My question is, if I trim my ends, will my "new ends" still feel rough? Or will they feel softer? Should I wait and clarify/do moisturizing treatments a couple of times before trimming my ends?

Thank you!

It's in "all of your hair", not just your ends. It might seem more apparent there, because your ends are the oldest part of the hair on your head. I would not start cutting it!

Clarify wash, moisturize well, then get back to us!

Thank you! That's what I was thinking. I have a follow up question if that's okay. Can excess protein eventually go away on its own? I read protein treatments are only temporary and that's why you have to re apply them, since the benefits eventually go away. Is that correct?

I'll clarify and moisturize and try to keep protein and moisture balanced but I was wondering about that.

I agree 100% with lapushka, clarify and moisturize to get your hair back in balance. If you're moisturizing it should right itself. Trimming won't solve the problem, it'll just make your hair shorter.

I agree 100% with lapushka and Zesty. You should clarify and moisturize, and that should get your hair back to it's balance. Yeah, trimming won't solve the problem. It will make your hair shorter.

Also agreeing with the previous posters. Excess protein can be remedied with clarifying and moisturizing treatments. It might take a few times, but it should eventually work itself out.

Yes, as said above. I also had a protein overload, i could wash it away. I don't have to cut it yet.

Another vote for not cutting: chances are that it just needs a clarifying wash. Then, after everything is back to normal, assess if you are really in need of a trim.

I agree 100% with the above posters: clarify, then moisturize.

Been there, done that (btdt)--if possible, leave the moisturizing conditioner in a couple of hours, then rinse it out. After a few washes, your hair should be back to rights :flower:

Thank you for the advice!

I washed my hair today, clarified and did an SMT but my hair still feels sooo dry, especially the ends. :( I guess it's going to take a couple of washes until my hair feels better.

I only left the SMT on for 30 minutes though. It was my first SMT and I was worried as to how my hair would react to the aloe vera so I was just testing the waters. I'll leave it on for a couple of hours the next time I wash my hair and I'll use a better protein-free mask (As I Am Hydration Elation).

Should I clarify every time I wash my hair until I get rid of the excess protein? I used Giovanni's 50:50 Clarifying Hydrating shampoo.

I also wanted to add, on top of being dry, my ends have 0 elasticity

I personally don't think it's necessary to clarify constantly in your situation. Just keep adding moisture to counter the protein, and clarify if you feel like your conditioning treatments "stop working".
