View Full Version : Half-Up: "Shortening" Long Hair (pics)

Hi friends :waving: I need some styling help!

I'm a bad longhair at times, and one of my sins is that I like to wear my hair down...a lot. Having it loose was no longer feasible beyond FTL, and so I wore my hair bunned every day for a couple years before I reached my limit.

Trying to feel more like myself, I used my limited skills to work out a way to wear *some* of my hair down again...and I realized I didn't have to wind ALL my hair into my daily LWB; I could wrap it once or twice and leave the rest hanging down, and so, the "half-up" was born (well, it's more like a "half-length-up" or something...the name needs work, but I hope you understand).

Doing that, I could effectively "shorten" my hair from calf to classic length, and walk around the world, with no one the wiser. Disclaimer: I am extra cautious when my hair is down like this, and while this could be problematic, it helps me to still enjoy my hair.

Still long, more practical for society.

I'd like to rework this style somewhat as it's not perfect, and I find I have to redo it several times per day since it gets a bit loose. I'm posting this because I'm wondering if anyone else has done/experimented with something like this: making long hair appear shorter. It's hard to find anything comparable from my online searches (or maybe I just don't know how to word them).

This is the only video I found: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Tv1o1UQxH_o
but, unfortunately, I'm struggling to create a knot like she did.

So, anybody done something similar? Any other buns you would suggest I try to modify like this? I hope I'm not alone and would love to hear any of your own ideas/feedback :)

I usually do the knot she does in the video, and hold the knot firmly with spin pins, otherwise it just falls out.

Oh, to have such thick hair that it still looks good like that!

I occasionally, when I want to put it up for a short time but don't want to wind it all up (usually if I've taken it down and am going to do something with it such as oiling, but need it out of the way for using the bathroom or just sitting down for a while, and don't want to wind it round my neck) do a bun like that, leaving the tail free as long as it's classic or shorter. Mine just looks thin and pathetic though, as all of the bulk is taken up in the bun and all volume is gone with it being gathered together. So on me I don't think it's a kind of style I could wear out or even just as an alternative to a bun :(

For my hair, just doing a LWB as if I had shorter hair and securing it with an appropriately sized hairtoy works, probably because the rest of my hair is no weight whatsoever to make it loosen!

A pretzel bun also leaves a tail out and is a little more secure or supported than a LWB, that could work. You can look up JJJ's pretzel bun on youtube. Depending on the times you wrap before pulling the tail thru can shorten it. I have a pic of it in my albums with the tail out. Its more like a bun pony than a half up though

Oh! There's a member here who does length-shortening styles often, SwordwomanRiona. You'll probably find her posts on the Hair Pics Here and Show Me Your Buns threads; you can do advanced search within a thread to search for posts by member name to see what styles she does.

I occasionally crochet a few chains, twist, and pin (crochet instructions (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Z9Hq3XIHFzw)). That eats length better than anything I know of.

lapis_lazuli, you have beautiful hair, it's no wonder you like to wear it down. I love wearing my hair down, too, and the half-up is the perfect solution. My hair is still quite short, but long enough to wear up, fortunately. Still, wearing it down or in a half-up is my go to style most days.

I try this knot a little clumsily on my a bit past waist length hair and it made the cutest short ponytail. May start wearing it

I get that! The tiredness of bunning. Sometimes I just use a plain claw clip and put it up like for a peacock twist, just clip it with that claw or even a Ficcare, Flexi8 or simple barrette. You get such a "huge" ponytail that way. :D I can get from classic to about BSL/waist, well MBL doing that.

It is an awesome idea!

Love the styles, BTW! :D

I am the only person I know who does this! It looks like a fabulously thick braid.

I often just tie my hair in a knot and stick some pins or hair sticks through it. It looks like a bun with a ponytail sticking out of it. The more loops you make before you pull the hair through, the shorter your hair looks. I can get mine up to mid back, and it's currently somewhere between knee and fingertip.

When I am doing things around the house and it is down, I'll just tie it in a knot and leave it. It falls out eventually, but it keeps it out of the way for a while.

A Valkyrie knot shortens my hair a lot. This is an older photo, but my hair was at hip (around where the belt sits) at that time.

Thank you, I'll look for that!

MusicalSpoons I get what you mean. I would love to wrap it more than once and get up to waist, but by then there’s just too little volume left to work with. If only there was a way to hide the ends and leave the top part down ;)
And thank you, that’s so helpful to have a name :flowers: I’ll have a look around!

A lot of "oomph" to it, because it drapes over an accessory. Bonus. I actually kind of hate ponytails with an elastic, and this is a good choice, alternative, for me. Even though, I have yet to wear it out! I just do it at home right now, mostly during the evening. :)

I've sometimes gone out with the twist and gotten good feedback about it :) I would try! It's mostly a home style for me too though, especially after a shower.

And, this is my first attempt at the crochet chain braid!

I'm shocked at how much it eats up length... I need to work on it a bit to get it just right, but I *love* it :inlove: I'm definitely wearing this one out!

It's surprisingly comfortable, doesn't pull or feel heavy... The only struggle is pulling the hair through without tangling other hairs. I'm still working on that ;)

I've seen a shortening bun called a comet bun if you want another name to look up. I like to do them and crochet braids a lot. I'd almost say that the crochet braid is my go-to style for around the house. It's very easy to take down and put back up and it's so short I don't have to worry about it falling into the garbage pail. (Well, most of the time!)

Big fan of the peacock on longer lengths, the knot-bun, and the crochet braid! That's my "range" as well. Apart from that, I don't regularly do other styles that much. I usually (if not trying stuff) just do my Nautilus throughout the week, and on wash day my hair is clipped up (like now).

For anyone who struggles with the valkyrie knot not lasting, I recommend this variation (https://youtu.be/pixgHmqwiII?t=157) on it.
The extra twist does eat up a lot of length, but it is more secure in my experience :)

Love all your styles! I've often done knots (comet, etc.) or left the ends out of Gibraltars or LWBs, but a comfy, well-balanced/distributed, go-to to eat length while taking away some weight is twisting, peacock style, and then knotting/bunning while leaving a tail.

Today's updo at TBL:

https://i.imgur.com/jCErCQI.jpg
(I trimmed 11" off my length earlier this year from FTL to BCL, and this style now looks sooooo much shorter!!! Waaaah! It does the trick, though.)

The construction is like the following pic (without the Ficcare to secure it), bunned/knotted with a tail at the top, and pinned with a hair accessory of choice:

https://i.imgur.com/miFlgyf.jpg

The above style at FTL:

https://i.imgur.com/C3mO5Sq.jpg

Here are a couple of the bun/knot tails, but the pics were to show the helix forks in action (they're great for securing slippery knot thingies that get pulled by swingy hair), so you'll have to imagine the length side of it.

I figure these belong here - some more shortening styles I've done while experimenting :)

The first is this:
https://forums.longhaircommunity.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=44610&d=1614453825
Just a few chains (as in the crochet braid) to make a knot down the length on both sides. I find it holds well when I put a tie under each. What I like most about this is having loose hair around my face again...I do miss that about shorter hair!

Second, some braids:
https://forums.longhaircommunity.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=44736&d=1615623773 https://forums.longhaircommunity.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=44737&d=1615623780
(we can put pictures on the same line now? or have I never noticed...)

What happened here is the result of knotting braids together...

Left: I first made 6 braids, and then I braided 3 together on each side. I tied these two sections together at the back of my head and continued to knot them all the way down. It had a cool spiral appearance on this attempt.

Right: Same thing, but with only 2 regular braids. Less detailed, but much faster.

On the side view, the knots are apparent. They could be tied tighter, but I kinda like the gaps.
https://forums.longhaircommunity.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=44738&d=1615623812

I'm still testing different things out. I tried four braids, twisting, other knotting methods... I'm pretty happy with the length reduction from tying the sections. Super long braids are great but only these shorter versions are actually practical for me to wear...that's always my goal ;)

Yes, the crochet technique is life-changing! It's so easy to do and undo. At your length, you may be able to do a couple chains on smaller sections of hair if you want to try it out :)

That's how I felt too, Amaryllis - I'm not that into buns at this stage so I didn't think I had that many options for when I want to look nice. Long hair can open up a lot of possibilities but has some unexpected limitations too. I want the best of both worlds ;)

What I like most about this is having loose hair around my face again...I do miss that about shorter hair!

I don't like having hair get *in* my face but I recently found with a crochet braid - with a loose, messy start that I can never get to look neat! - I get hair *around* my face which it turns out felt really nice but with it also being contained which is perfect. I need to try to remember to wear one more often (especially with clean hair ) but I still default to buns because they're just so quick and easy.

I figure these belong here - some more shortening styles I've done while experimenting :)

The first is this:

Just a few chains (as in the crochet braid) to make a knot down the length on both sides. I find it holds well when I put a tie under each. What I like most about this is having loose hair around my face again...I do miss that about shorter hair!

Second, some braids:

(we can put pictures on the same line now? or have I never noticed...)

What happened here is the result of knotting braids together...

Left: I first made 6 braids, and then I braided 3 together on each side. I tied these two sections together at the back of my head and continued to knot them all the way down. It had a cool spiral appearance on this attempt.

Right: Same thing, but with only 2 regular braids. Less detailed, but much faster.

On the side view, the knots are apparent. They could be tied tighter, but I kinda like the gaps.

I'm still testing different things out. I tried four braids, twisting, other knotting methods... I'm pretty happy with the length reduction from tying the sections. Super long braids are great but only these shorter versions are actually practical for me to wear...that's always my goal ;)

umm...I know my brain works differently than most....but the first thing I think is.....'they said there would be no math here' anyone else see these styles as almost mathematical equations? probably not....oh well.

very unique again, Ms L_L.

No, the last one reminds me of DNA.

Wow these are fab!

Thanks! :flower: The loose crochet braid is a good idea! I can't get the beginning tight either, so should be easy  You're right, even though I don't think buns are the most flattering on me, I'm really thankful I can do them and even forget about my hair for days. I don't know how I ever dealt with it otherwise.

Wow such gorgeous hair!

Thank you! :)

loll not intended! I already have enough math to deal with  Thanks!
