View Full Version : Looking for sharp mini shears (Japanese blade) to use for S&D

I've tried several pocket-sized shears for S&D, such as pedicure scissors, nose-hair scissors, embroidery scissors, and a pair of mustache shears, but they all aren't as sharp as my 5" Ultron hairdressers shears made from Japanese blades (thanks for the rec, Lapushka). However, the latter one isn't practical to carry it everywhere even though I store it in a pouch.

So do you know any brands that carry sharp mini-shears made from Japanese blades?

You're welcome!

I have yet to come across one like that. The next in line for me are embroidery shears, but the old-fashioned kind, like these:

I think my current S&D scissors are Japanese style shorties from Bonika or Kenchii.

Oh, clarification... Why did I say, "the old fashioned kind"? Well, those "ostrich ones" are *sharp* like you wouldn't believe. I have a more modern set and they cut... well, they don't, actually. They are so blunt it's ridiculous.

I have something like this one too, but it wasn't as sharp as the Ultron one, so I had to sharpen it.

Can you send to me a link of a mini-sized version of those shears?

Neither of mine are still available, but both Bonika and Kenchii have 5 inch convex edge shears. The last time I looked, all the shorter shears had bevel/German edges (I once had a pair of 4.5" Japanese convex edge shears, but they were lost).

Have you experienced more sharpness with Japanese blades than with German blades? I once picked Japanese blades because I understood they were better for trimming wet hair.

I have heard of Japanese steel being razor sharp, I have heard nothing of German blades, at all. Is that a thing?

Years ago, I googled to find out what the differences are between Japanese and German blades and found an article that stated German blades are more fitted for cutting dry hair while Japanese ones are better for wet hair. Unfortunately, I haven't saved the page somewhere in my notes.

Hmmm... I think my shears perform better on dry hair. but that's my technique. I have had my first pair now 10+ years and all it needed was I needed to turn the little screw in the middle to tighten the blades again. I recently (last year) bought a new one, in pink camo (they no longer had the plain ones). Yeah... I love these. Standard (about) 50 euro shears but they're sharp as all get out.

I will look into that, though. Interesting!

With bevel/German blades, the edges of the blades are broader and less knife-like where they cut the hair, imagine a heavy duty cleaver vs. a razor blade. Much more durable and long lasting, but a greater chance of crushing rather than cutting.

The feeling I get cutting a strand is pressure, then a snap, but with a Japanese/convex blade, I barely feel anything when I cut a strand.

Thanks for the explanation! I also notice my convex-bladed shears are very smooth in snipping -- I used them occasionally for S&D but I use them mainly for my trims. I just wish I could find some mini-sized convex-bladed scissors.

They also have this scissors that people use for papercuts, you have to push instead of pull like a normal sciccor, and they are extremely sharp.
