I am closing in on bottom of neck and have realised it is not that far from shoulder, I've looked on google for that and lengths don't seem that consistent, so sharing photos of where you "called" SL would be helpful so I can figure out if I shouldn't bother with neck as a milestone

thanks to everyone who helps a bat out!

Around here is when I was calling my hair shoulder length.

Don't think it really matters where you call it, somewhere near the top of a shirt collar to just brushing the shoulders is SL in my mind.

thats why I wanted to know if it was anypoint using neck length as a milestone, I might just use SL for my next milestone since my hair almost reaches the bottom of my neck now this basically answered my question thank you for sharing ♥

From what I can tell looking at hair length charts and human anatomy, SL is longer than the base of the neck, but shorter than the collarbone. So, I would assume SL is somewhere in between these - where the straps of tops usually sit. Personally, when I grew out a chin bob many years ago, I never knew that each milestone had a name. Only that neck length was above the shoulder and shoulder was anything until you were approaching APL.

Edit: I would call this SL. Although it appears my hair is at collarbone length, my shoulders are hunched up a bit.

I'm ruthless and call shoulder length at the top of my shoulder where my collarbones connect, at the bottom of my trapezius muscle.

Please excuse the video quality, this was shot a decade ago. I still have that poster on my wall though...haha

Edit: looking at the video I might be a .5 to an inch below shoulder. Still I use that collarbone connection point as my reference.

I consider myself to be currently SL when curly, maybe a bit past, depending on how my curls are behaving that particular day.

I do consider NL and SL two very different milestones and I don't count CBL as one as SL and CBL are basically the same on me. but I have a very distinct slope from the bottom of my neck to my shoulders, so I'd say use the milestones the best they adapt to your own body.

I will be fetching you some pictures when my wife will let me use the computer! (She's playing Roblox right now haha.)
I have grown to SL many times throughout my life so I will have plenty of examples for you. I call it a little higher up than CuteCrow does. SL is just one of those lengths to me that has a bit of an expanse, much like neck and MBL have, it's not as clear cut as APL or waist.

I’m the same as CuteCrow, my shoulders slope so I called shoulder length when my hair reached my collarbone. It’s different for everyone though.

I think i'll be calling it shoulder when my hair gets to were traps meld into deltoid time for me to go take a photo! so neck length still works as a good milestone I think

That would be a good anatomical description of the milestone "Where trapezius meets the deltoid". Maybe we should add some dome anatomical descriptions for the milestones in a pinned post or something.

I had to google tha, I am not really that smart xD but it is the best way I could find to describe where I meant. but that isn't a bad idea

From my first of three proms (I was dating a senior, so this was 11th grade for me):

The back-shot makes it look a little shorter than it was, closer to neck length, that was because of the angle of my head. Please forgive my horrendously messy room, I was still a hoarder back then :tmi:

Then these are from around the same time period:
https://media.discordapp.net/attachments/668563929282117725/740676008771846274/2013-4-26_18.JPG?width=460&height=609

I have a name for the "span" of shoulder length: the trapezius trapezoid. Because I am not so ruthless :p anywhere in this span is where Non-LHCers start referring to my hair as "shoulder length".

BUT that all being said, I also consider shoulder length to be a smaller milestone, like mouth length on the way from ear to chin, and collarbone to be the big important milestone.
So I can see why many don't call their hair shoulder until it's actually CBL.

Here are the most recent pictures I have to use as examples.

This is when my hair was SL stretched but not yet there wavy, back in 2017:
https://media.discordapp.net/attachments/668563929282117725/740679431290486875/20170903_192753.jpg?width=324&height=577
This braid shot shows the length a little better, definitely in the annoying phase of "can I call it or not!?!?!"

But then here I am again with CBL hair a short 2.5 months later! I cut my hair the month after that, and it hasn't even been this long since.

Bat, adding deltoid to the description really does help to define it!

Oaxis you have such volume in your waves :blossom:

I like SL because we finally get some length to use from the bottom of the hair line, like in Oaxis picture braid picture. And the further down in the shoulder realm that we call it the faster APL will roll around :magic:

I'll be calling my hair neck length soon hopefully by the time my August photo comes around the 24th if my rate keeps going how it is I might actually reach shoulder in December

I would already call your hair neck length, it's getting so close to the collar of your shirt! I really think you will reach shoulder by the end of the year :D

I have about an inch to go before I'm fully confident in calling neck length i really want to now but then that means i'll have to wait longer to call shoulder

Reviving this thread I'd like to see some new shoulder length photos as a guide for myself, I'm in that wishful thinking/can I call it stage, I'm honestly feeling like I need another full month

I consider myself strong shoulder length now that it sits on my shoulder even with my natural texture :)

I wouldn’t weigh my opinion too heavily, but as a person who has never notated whether I had or hadn’t shoulder length hair, if I were going to, I would call it when my hair reached the skin on the top of the arms. Like the part that goes up when you shrug your shoulders. That makes sense to me but it sounds close to what others call neck perhaps

I’ve offered to do this as anatomy is my job.

Yeah I agree, it's between shoulder and APL for sure. Especially considering that it's not stretched.
