View Full Version : Entangled's six year anniversary

I figured I should probably make an anniversary post now that my hair's at knee. It's been six years, folks!
I started out frustrated with my hair and its taper. I didn't know how to handle it and was yanking a ball-tipped plastic brush through my wet hair. Learning about gentle handling was a huge first step and is the one thing I don't think I will ever unlearn.

I cut my BSL hair into a chin-length bob, and discovered LHC. I lurked for at least two years and read A LOT about haircare. I tried a lot of stuff--egg washing, SMT, stretching washes, SLS free washes, cone-free, BBB brushing, and more. Now, I'm pretty low-key and just use Suave naturals cone-free stuff and dilute the shampoo a bit for easier application, and a dandruff shampoo when my SD flares up. If I'm in the mood, I'll do a heavy oiling with coconut oil before hand (which I should do...it's been a while...). My hair lives in a braided bun tied with cotton yarn most days for easy takedown, though I do like coronet braids and braided loops.

I've come to terms with my color, texture, and taper. I used to want any color but mine--a real color, that people had a name for, other than dishwater or mousy. Now I don't really need one. Texture-wise, I've kinda accepted that most days I'm going to have witch's broom hair because of the braid and wavy nature of my hair. I don't think it's the most photogenic, but it's mine. I tend to use heatless curls before wearing it out.

Here's a good picture of how my hair was in its natural state--puffy and flippy-outy. In this picture, it's already grown out a good two inches from when I fist cut it.

Here's one of my first successful hair pictures:

I started to realize my hair had texture and wasn't in fact just puffy-straight.

My hair is now officially at knee, something that is honestly kinda crazy...I never expected I would get here.

Some of my first attempts at buns! My first fork did not work so well for me, and my sticks were far longer than my current preference.

Thank you! Sadly, it's becoming a lot more accurate! I don't know what's going on, but the past few months it has been fairly awful! I've been considering a trim, but scissors...I lost mine and haven't replaced them yet.

Congratulations on making it this far, and on knee-length! :cheer:
Thank you!

Thank you! My hair definitely changes a lot in different lighting. When I was out in the sun more, my ends used to be almost blonde. This is my hair from when I spent a few hours outside every day for marching band:

Thank you! I've had a lot of fun learning styles here. Since quarantine started, my hair's been pretty boring, but I do love spicing it up when I'm dressed nicely.

Beautiful! Such lovely photos. Congratulations!
Thank you!

No, I love questions! Yes, my taper is natural. I've never cut layers, though I think the last time I trimmed I had a gentle U-hemline. As for terminal, I think I could reasonably get to mid-calf, though my ends are already pretty thin. I'm honestly planning on cutting back to classic or even tailbone sometime in the indeterminate future, but I'm really fairly lazy and don't have scissors on hand...I may just keep going for a while (that's how I got here, honestly). I'm not itchy to change anything, so I'll probably just wait to do anything. I like having hair long enough to comfortably wrap and pin around my head, but I prefer a little less taper than I'm showing now.

Thank you! I've had a lot of fun playing around with my hair now that I've got a lot of thin ends that can wrap tight. It's kinda crazy...I remember back in band when I would look at my shadow and pretend that my APL hair was classic...it seemed impossible. Yet now that's normal!

Beautiful hair and hairstyles, congratulations!
Thank you so much!

Thank you for answering my questions! I thought you maybe had layers because your hair looks thick and heavy. I guess the natural tapper really makes bunning easier :) Taking notes, being lazy is the fastest way to grow to knee lol. I hope to keep seeing you around here, it could be interesting to know how much longer it could grow with your taper but I also think classic would look lovely on you too.

Thank you! That’s really sweet. I was insecure about it for so long, since Mose everyone where I live dyed or at least highlights their hair if it’s my color.

Lovely long hair and *great* updo skills! :)
Thank you so much!

6 years to get from shoulder to knee? *mindblown* happy anniversary!
I should clarify: this is six years of LHC membership, but it’s been about ten years growing, I think. I also cut off about five inches two years ago, and went from mid-thigh/almost knee back to classic.

Such a transformation! Thank you for sharing, it’s really inspirational for us still near the beginning of our journey! Happy anniversary!
Thank you! And best of luck to you. I wish you satisfaction along the journey.

Gorgeous hair! I love the variety of styles.
Thank you! I try to mix it up, or at least take pictures when I do;).

Congratulations! Also, we have the same hair color
Oh wonderful! I’m curious. What do yo call your hair color? I used to call mine blonette on the forums, and with my light ends it seemed a good fit, but now I’m not so sure. I call it brown in person, though I don’t really think of myself as a brunette?

Congratulations! Your hair looks wonderful :crush:
Thank you!

I'm curious as to your favourite heatless curling method, your curly pic is so lovely
Thank you! Ditto on the hair color question: what color do you call your hair?

As for heartless curling, I used to use these sponge curlers (a sponge with a wire through it in a fabric casing, and I’d roll the hair up and twist the ends of the wires together) but my hair got too long. Now, as in the picture, I use what the YouTube video called a Victorian rag curl method. I use thin scarves.

You take a scarf, find clip it to your head with enough on one side to make a knot (4-6 inches is usually good) and then wrap your hair around the long end of the scarf. You can twist the hair as you do it if you want to imitate a curling wand, or you can keep the hair flat like a traditional barrel curler. You wrap the hair so that it’s close to the last wrap—a solid wall of hair around the scarf rather than a candy-cane stripe of hair around a scarf. Then, once you ge t to the end of your hair, you take the scarf and wrap it back over the wrapped hair until you get back to the top, and tie the ends together. You shouldn’t be able to see the hair underneath. I find two scarves enough for my thicker-end ii hair; you can use thinner rags if you want tighter curls. I’m very pleased with this method—it imitates a curling iron very well and results in minimal tangles, plus since ai only have to do two wraps, it takes barely any time compared to the 30 minutes it took before.

Beautiful hair, beautiful hairstyles, beautiful outfits :o happy anniversary!
Thank you on all counts! LHC has occasionally inspired my to up my fashion game.

Happy anniversary! Your hair is so happy and healthy, and such a pretty colour! I love all the different styles you do with it, too. I'm in the same dilemma as you about the thin ends, I have begun micro trimming to thicken my ends and that's a new and different stage to my hair growing journey. I love all your beautiful photos! Knee is such an awesome length :)
Thank you! It is a weird sort of place, isn’t it? I don’t know if I have the patience to micro trim, and part of me wonders if it’s really possible to thicken my ends. But at the same time, I’m quite pleased to be at knee and not be actively growing toward a goal. I think length stopped mattering to me so much once I hit hip, and stopped mattering at all once I hit classic. And yet, it is super cool to tell people when they ask that my hair is knee length and not be exaggerating.

Happy anniversary! :cheer: Your hair looks beautiful and I loved seeing all of the pictures! :)
Thank you! It’s always fun seeing your styles, both hair and clothing, around the boards.

Congratulations! Amazing growth, I really enjoyed all that pics! Your hair it's lovely.

Oh good! I decided if I was really going to do an anniversary thread, I might as well dig up all of the pictures I have, including those I haven’t posted.

Congratulations, and what a journey!
Thank you! And it really has been? I think the biggest change hasn’t been my hair, but how I’ve thought about it.

Mabrouk mabrouk on the anniversary! You are so inventive with your hairstyles. I especially love that one with the double Dutch braids going into a bun : )
Ooh, thank you! Actually, that is one of the styles that inspired me to grow! I ran into the now-defunct site Dreamweaver Braiding (you can find it on the internet archive!), which is a ren faire braider’s site full of instructions for hair. That style was called the “classic,” I think, and if one of the braids was pinned loose and hanging down underneath, it was called a rose stem. I remember that site had a selection of styles for shortening long hair, and said “if you can’t imagine why someone would want the illusion of shorter hair for a day, your hair’s probably not long enough,” which blew my mind because the picture showed an “after” image of TBL hair and I literally didn’t think it was possible to go longer than that—I didn’t even comprehend that there were people with knee-length hair....

Thank you so much! I agree, from what I’ve seen of your hair we are quite similar. Congrats on the recent cut, by the way. You seem very happy with it, which makes me glad.:)

Very cool! How often would you say you trim?
I used to trim a half inch on the dot every six months, but I haven’t trimmed the past three years at all, except for a five-inch cut early 2018.

We will see! I may consider a bigger cut for a special occasion in two years, but also may not. I honestly enjoy my taper for the most part; it does make bunning and fancy looped styles a lot easier, but some people I know harp on it (someone just came up and said they wanted to cut off my braid “right here,” and indicated a spot about 8 inches from the end...an old and mostly toothless battle that just makes me smile and roll my eyes internally more than anything else).

I love these kinds of threads!! Both inspiring and visually appealing :crush:
That’s so kind of you to say!

Ooh another congratulations Entangled, happy anniversary! Your hair is looking wonderful at knee and I look forward to seeing where growing on takes you :D taper at these lengths is completely natural, but like you I did have to come to terms with mine as well.

Thank you! I do love hearing form you—I think our hair is so similar, and you’ve been about a milestone in front of me so it’s a little like seeing the future.;p Have you noticed any increase in tangling past a certain length? My hair’s been killing me the past few months...

Beautiful hair journey! Thanks for sharing it with us. The hair slide in your signature is wonderful by the way :heartbeat
Oh thank you! It was actually a gift on the RAOK thread. I love it; it reminds me of the sun motif in Tangled.

It's gorgeous! I especially love the picture of it down and curled and the one with the braid twisted up with a flexi. I think hair that could be plain or ordinary can become spectacular based on length alone!
Thank you so much! I think that’s one of the reasons I love long hair. I started as a way to stand out without dying my hair, though now it just feels like me and it makes me smile when people go big-eyed since they don’t realize how long it is. (Also my niece-cousins thought it would make a great reign like I was a horse. They also decided I was a Disney Princess—first I was Rapunzel, but then I was Elsa. Better than my brother pretending it’s a noose!

Congratulations entangled. That’s quite a journey to celebrate. Your hairstyles and different hair colours is so enjoyable to see. Love the spiral curls and long braid at the front the best. Happy growing to you.

With hair colour, when I first got on this forum I called it blonette, but I think I was just a bit annoyed that I wasn't blonde (was blonde when I was a kid, dyed my hair dark and when it grew out again it wasn't blonde anymore). In real life I call it light brown, don't think it really matters what it's called, I've learned to like it whatever it is!
