For all those despairing at slow growth, it’s somehow heartening to realise that the sum total of the growth of all the hairs on your head is about a mile a month. It cheers me up, anyway.

Haha! This is the calculation:
Assume 120,000 hairs on the average head.
Assume a half an inch growth rate per month per hair.
That equals 60,000 inches per month in total.
Divide by 12 gives you 5,000 feet per month.
Divide by 3 gives you 1,666.67 yards per month.

There are 1,760 yards in a mile.

So yes, almost a mile a month.

It is, actually quite unbelievable.

That's very cool!

The difference between i, ii and iii is often down to the number of follicles on the head rather than coarseness of the individual strands (otherwise you'd expect fineys to be i and coarse-haireds to be iii, which is absolutely not the case) so we would all have different mileages.

iii would be hard to pinpoint an average because you can get F/iii at just over 4", but there are F/iiis at 6" circumference, which is a heck of a lot more hairs. I can't do the exact maths but using πr2, 4" ponytail circumference would be a cross-sectional area of 4π sq.inch, but 6" ponytail circ would have a cross-sectional area of 9π sq.inch. That's more than double the area of hair, whether that's double the number of hairS I don't know (I can't do the maths on that at all right now, even if I converted to metric :lol:)

iis ... Well, that takes us between >2" and 4" ponytail circs, so a wide difference in number of hairs there too.

I don't know. How many hairs are on the average horse? How fast does horsehair grow? Do their manes & tails grow faster than their hides?

Now that's an interesting question! Horse manes grow from .5 inch to 1.5 inches a month, like ours. But their body hair grows in cycles, like some parts of our body as well
