Neat!

Catalina Braids?

If someone makes a tutorial, let me know. I have some other updates to the Thesaurus I keep putting off.

Awesome! My hair is clearly way too short but I would love to know how to do this for when it's long!

Catalina braids is a pretty name. :)

You are welcome jane_marie.

I tried this hairstyle today making modifications due to my hair length. It is relatively comfortable though I have had to adjust a few pins now and then. The most time consuming part was the braiding.

Variant for very long hair: Follow basic instructions but after the first loop is pinned make a second loop just outside the first and pin into place. Then wrap and pin ends as Torrinpaige showed.

Tip - use a mirror when pinning to make sure the two sides are at the same height. Also pin as you go instead of wrapping and pinning at the end. Placing pins at the start of the braid before wrapping helped keep the loops centered.

WOW! :thud: that's amazing! One of your two plaits is thicker than all of my hair in a single plait but you have inspired me to try once I've finished with some Real Life Stuff and have some spare energy :D

Thank you all!

By the end of the day it had started sliding down the back of my head and pulling painfully but still looked nice. In addition to the pulling it was an odd hair placement for me, so that may have contributed to the pain. Overall it looked nice, was relatively simple to do, and was comfortable for several hours. I am not likely to do this frequently but may do it on occasion in the future.

Beautiful, HaMalka! This kind of thing was actually very popular among the Mennonite kids where I was living in the early aughts; my best friend often wore her hair that way. Admittedly, I haven't tried it in years, but I recall having found it a little uncomfortable due to the high-but-not-on-top-of-the-head position of the braids. My scalp pain is much less now than it was a year ago, though, so perhaps it's time to give this one another chance!

I tried that in the distant past with longer hair and found it profoundly uncomfortable.

Without even trying I know I would too. My hair slips even when tightly braided, twisted, and pinned mightily. I'll enjoy seeing it on others though.

An attempt, done (as I'm certain you would never guess) without a mirror:

I had this in for about three quarters of a day, and it was nowhere near as painful as I remembered. For what it's worth, I didn't start from two ponytails, but rather began the braids directly against my scalp. At first I did fairly loose braids, but I had way too long ends to try to hide, so I rebraided my hair fairly tightly. (Still a lot of extra hair to hide, tbh. Probably the real way to do this with extra-long hair is to start from a French braid to eat up some length, but I'm too lazy for that sort of thing.) I realized now that I crossed the two braids way too high up on my head, could probably have let the loops hang a little lower, and may have overdone the "tack down firmly all the way around" direction. But hey, it's something, and it didn't give me a headache ( ;

ETA: oh, and I think the braids probably need to be pinned closer to the center of the back of the head to give a look more like in the illustration--and perhaps even started close to each other/to the center part--whereas I let mine range out pretty far to each side.

Another day, another fuzzy photo.

And from the side:

This was after a day of wearing it, so it's starting to look a little droopy, but I think I pretty much have the thing figured out now. It's a nice profile, very '40s-looking--which I'm guessing is about when the book was from? Certainly not as uncomfortable as I had imagined. Honestly, it's less that having the weight pinned up to the top back of my head feels awkward as that having braids hanging down on my neck feels awkward ; P
