Hello! I’ve been searching for a 100% silk, satiny scarf or bonnet for sleeping. I tend to be a tosser so I’m also a little concerned about it staying put. Can anyone recommend something? I don’t want to pay a fortune, but I do want to invest in something that will protect my hair.

Thank you!
-Sandra

Perhaps one of these (https://www.allure.com/gallery/bedtime-head-wraps)? Personally I just use polyester satin and it's been working out fine for me, although yes well treated silk can last you generations!

Oh, really? I've been hearing that it has to be 100% silk! Where did you get yours, Oxalis? Do you use a scarf or a bonnet?

Thanks for the link, I'll check it out!

I've heard this too, but I can't find any actual evidence about it. People mention something about the silk breathing better or something? Tbh I'm not convinced it's not just pure snobbery lol. Not on purpose, just the assumption that the expensive thing HAS to work better.
I'm a knitter, the same thing happens with yarn, people get all judgy of acrylic when it's got a lot of benefits, it's just different.

I think Etsy is a pretty good place to find a silk/satin bonnet/scarf. There's a lot of companies there that sell them.

I have the Silke London turban mentioned there. Mine is blue and green and absolutely gorgeous. I purchased it in February from lookfantastic, with a good discount, but it was still expensive, ouch. But I'm happy I did, I love it so much, it stays well in my head and is super comfortable and it even looks good. I might use it outdoors during the summer when I want to protect my hair from sun.

Ooh that’s a great idea! I think I’ll get a couple of them so I can switch them out!

Yep, it's because the silk breathes better. Some people get sweaty with polyester on their heads. If you're not one of those people, a polyester satin cap is fine. The same goes for acrylic.

That makes sense, especially if you live in warmer climates. I'll probably try the less expensive option for now and see how it goes.

I definitively think that sleeping on polyester night after night Is not so good for my skin. I get sweaty and wake up with weird breakouts.
I usually can find real silk for a good price in local thrift shops and fairs! Plus, sometimes the earnings go to charities, so double win!

I have a 100%silk bonnet. My sister got it for me from Amazon at Christmas.

Thank you! Do you prefer a bonnet over a tied scarf?

I bought 3 bonnets....dangerous territory. I'll let everyone know how they turn out!

For me, a tied scarf always slips off but I'm a rough sleeper and I toss and turn.

My partner got a silk pillowcase from here (http://thxsilk.com/collections/silk-headband), no complaints so far, seems satiny enough. Can recommend. They don't have bonnets though unfortunately.

I recently bought a handmade silk bonnet on Etsy! It’s very lovely and such good quality but I’ve been sceptical to use it after wearing it every night for a week or so... I’m not sure if I’m just seeing things that aren’t there but I think the edges might be causing me breakage on the nape/back of my hairline...!! I wonder if anyone else has experienced this? Leaning towards a silk scarf, hmmm might be more gentle?

If you can sew you can scout out thrift stores for larger sized, real silk blouses for just a few bucks. Then you cut the back into the size and shape you want, hem all four sides, and voila, a lovely silk scarf!

I have never done this myself, but I've read about people who did and who were very happy with the result.

I recently made one as it's a better price than buying one. I used some thin silk for the inside and polyester satin for the outside. Both silk and satin polyester will work as they both stop hair from drying out unlike cotton. I do prefer silk myself as it is more breathable. The guide I used is here:

https://aliyahsrecipesandtips.com/satin-bonnet-hair-cap/

I found it easy and quick, it turned out surprisingly well considering that I made it :D
