View Full Version : Buns: Which ones work (and look good) when placed as high as possible?

Hello and good morning, afternoon, evening or night!

I have come to realize that I might have a sensitive head. All but the highest set buns give me a killer headache regardless of how loose I make them. Lately, I have been doing Frida Kahlo braids which are extremely comfortable. I also do an extremely high placed cinnamon bun which feels good and is quick. Both of these styles are great but I would love some variety.

Can anyone suggest some buns that actually work and look good way high up?

Here is an example of where my no-headache sweet-spot to give you an idea of what I mean by "high-set".

Yes Ma'am I can help. Every day I wear my hair up high because it breaks the round contours of my face.

I wear a Nessa bun with a single stick or a Spock Bun with a loong fork or a flip bun with a curved fork.

Yep, a high cinnabun is a good choice.
I will wear a LWB up high, too. Some days I'll do my LWB as high as I can get it and then just keep re-doing it as it slips down. I wish it would stay but my hair is super slippy.
Also sock buns sit high, although I never wear them.
Alternately, when my hair hurts, a low, loose bun with a side part, held with a fork, usually helps the pain. Sometimes I add a braid on one side.
The most comfortable thing for me, though, is a "pinless" braided bun-- French braid the hair, stick a stick through it, wrap the braid around the stick, and put another stick through to hold it.
For me, anything with a French braid is going to hold better and cause less scalp ache.

Edit: if this link works, it is what I called the "poop emoji" but is probably a LWB.

I like really high buns, because of how my face looks. I don't care about how they look from side or back, though...

My favourite is Milady's bun (I imagine it requires quite a much length for thick hair) and I use LWB quite a lot too. I can even do Nautilus, but it looks like a pimple, ha.

LWB is my favorite top-of-the-head bun if you have the length

Thanks for all of the awesome suggestions guys!

Unfortunately I think my hair is too thick and short to do a lot of these but I'll be returning back to this thread periodically to try the suggestions here. <3

I don't usually wear high buns but I've been really trying to air my nape a bit more recently and a few that have worked:
LWB
Nessa bun
Orchid bun
Everyday bun (like a nautilus but only with a half twist, the loop goes downwards rather than up, and the fork goes through the bulk of it rather than under the centre from the sides)

I have no idea what length:thickness ratio is needed though :?

I'm currently wearing my buns on top of my head. I started with the disc bun, but since I thinned my hair out so much the two strands were too much time-consuming wrapping, so I graduated up to the L-finity. This particular style (a loop on each side so your hair is like the flexi-8 holding down the wrapped ends) is what works securely and comfortably for me, since my hair won't play well with Lazy Wrap or Nautilus. It took me a handful of days' learning curve to make sure I didn't make them too tight or too loose. On me I don't find them "pretty" so much as functional, but that's all a matter of personal opinion!

I don't have a picture of the disc bun on top of my head, but here's how the L-finity looks on me from the back. It's very tall and wide, very distinctly shaped, very much not a cinnabun. Disc bun looked mostly like this except with more lopsided loops and less defined twist.

(The picture ended up pretty grainy somehow but hopefully you can still get a good idea)

My favorite has been LWB, but i am happy this thread exists. I will look out for more options. I like high buns.

Same here :flower:

I'd also love to try the nautilus bun, but I have to wait for my hair to grow still :justy:
