View Full Version : Hair density picture thread

Okay, let's get a visual reference from different heads of hair. Make a part, or multiple parts and take a close up.

https://forums.longhaircommunity.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=40377&d=1582555006

The top left picture is natural light. I have m/c hair all the way to my hairline as you can see. It used to be finer in that area and at the temples but I there are too many factors to determine why that is now different.

The top right is bright light and zoomed in very close. I can see some follicles with more than one hair growing from it. I remember the doctor that lasered hair off another area mentioned two hairs was not uncommon, but that three or four was new to her.

The bottom two are bright light and close up of different parts I made toward the sides of my head. I couldn't get the nape or back on my own.

I've learned that my hair grows completely at random intervals. Some are very close together and some are further apart. It could be that those spaces are due to recently shed hairs. Also, I had issues with flaky scalp for a long time and I've changed the way I wash my hair and it looks really good now. Happy with that

Anyway, I'm looking forward to seeing other's pictures as I have never really looked so closely at anyone else's hair aside from my mom (whose hair is wavier but otherwise grows just like mine) and my daughter (who still has toddler hair)..

So post your own close ups and tell us what you've learned about your own hair density and growth patterns around your head.

ETA:

This makes a lot more sense with a size reference in millimeters.

Oh neat! I guess it's time for me to go get a macro clip on for the phone. I have been meaning to so I can photograph insect anyway. :)

Its really interesting how you have multiple hairs coming from a single follicle in some places.

Of curiosity, I took a close up of my eyebrows and eyelashes and they look exactly like my hair and grow in the same mildly clumpy pattern (with surprising eyelash strays I never would have expected). This is interesting to me because I feel most people's eyebrows seem markedly distinct from their other hair.

This view makes me glad I don't use a magnifying mirror. Haha.

Ohh!! Very interesting thread idea!! Thanks for sharing!! I look forward to seeing what everyone shares!! :)

It is hard for me to get good pictures since I don't have the best camera on my phone, so apologies ahead of time!!

This is the top of my head:
https://forums.longhaircommunity.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=40384&d=1582578674

The side of my head:

https://forums.longhaircommunity.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=40387&d=1582579583

And this is the back of my head. I think that the density of my hair is a lot thicker at the back of my head, especially with a lot of baby fine hairs, so it is hard to part it.

Here is my daughter's 1b/F/M/i hair. Not sure why it looks ashy grey because it's a medium brown.

pisinoe, I see no signs of thinning whatsoever.

I love how good all of this high quality LHC hair looks even up close.

I hope this thread wasn't just for thick hair...?

Here's s picture of my 6 cm circumference hair, so the lower end of ii (I had a big shed this autumn, lost 1,5 cm of my circumference, no-one knows why, no new growth yet...).

It still looks very dense. Seems like you have lots of hair, but it compresses a lot in updos. :)

Here is mine at 7 cm circumference:

I can see how that would be a pain to wash your scalp on wash days. I had a friend in elementary school with hair much like yours which she kept in waist to hip length braids. She said it was just easier to deal with and wash when it was in sections like that and her mom would just rebraid it for her once a week. What a sight that must have been to see her hair free of those braids!

Here's mine with a post-shed ponytail circumference of 3.15". Quite sparse (or just normal?) but many follicles seem to be sprouting two hairs.

ETA: Do my strands look like F or F/M to you?

Great thread! I took some pics but realised despite fine-toothed combing and then washing last night, there are still lots of little flakes from a recently unhappy scalp so you don't want to see the pics  I'll try again when my scalp is happier!

Ylva I don't know - my own hairs look medium to me but they are right on the cusp of F/M at 16 to a mm. It will be interesting to see more pictures for a better gauge of how different types look :)

I also tried a photo but found my scalp looks a bit less than lovely.

my hair was that thin when I joined LHC. scratching my scalp like a maniac because "it's so greasy" (mom's saying) made my thickness to barely 6 cm pony circ. my hair is now much thicker, but I'll take some photos on freshly washed hair.
you definitely have f and m strands.
PS: I don't know why 2 strands grow from the same folicle. I have this phenomenon mostly on my legs *cough*. I don't know if I have the same problem on my scalp though.

Yes, it isn't that bad, I was afraid it would look worse. Sometimes I see so much scalp in my other hair pictures, but I have always had that problem.

And yes, my hair compress s lot, into total nothingness...
By the way, when I saw your hair picture, I though it was my hair too... I took several pics and some of them was very similar and I was just, what, did I post them too...

I don't think my hair is particularly thin so not sure where that comment is coming from. And it's completely normal that two hairs grow from the same follicle. It is not a problem of any kind.

They look on the normal side to me, Ylva, as far as you can "see" this from a picture!

What are you referring to, normal? :) The strands being M? Or a normal amount of follicles?

I love this thread! Ylva from what I can see these strands look pretty M, but it's hard to tell without comparison I find.

I'd contribute my own scalp, but it's full of eczema right now and no one wants to see that up close

I was referring to the thickness of 1 strand. Follicles? No clue.

Alright, thanks!

To me, they look quite similar to a lot of other scalps in this thread at least. :)

I guess I could change it to F/M at least but sometime later I'll also take pics from elsewhere on my scalp, that was the part.

Is it? I'm not sure. I'm gonna try to take some pictures of my natural colour when it's time for my 2 years dye free anniversary in the end of April.

here's mine. flat top, f/m hair, 8.50 cm pony circ. (3.34 inch), natural parting. my hair compresses into nothing and it still feels so light especially for the first 24h after washing. now I see why hairdressers told me to keep it short, but I don't like my hair to look like a wig for having too much volume on top.

It's amazing how there isn't really a huge difference from appearance alone between the density of someone with ii hair vs iii hair...and yet it can result in another inch or two in ponytail circumference.

I bet if we had two heads of straight hair of the same strand thickness, the ii head and the iii head wouldn't look too different close to the scalp.

This is a fun thread. It's interesting how some people have hair follicles growing at random (like mine) while others seem to have neatly planted, evenly spaced follicles.

So thin compared to what I used to have, this is the crown of my head.

By any objective standard it's not bad but it's very thin compared to what I had before that damned Prednisone.

Yeah it can get out of hand VERY quickly if it’s not separated to some degree. Single buns don’t do much in terms of tangles and matting, so I too usually opt for 4-5 braids or twists.

But it’s just the nature of type 4 hair. Can’t be mad though. I could have no hair at all lol.

I would also guess that hair distribution plays a major part. The top and back of my head is regularly packed with hair follicles, but the sides in front of my ears produce a very sparse amount of hair (I see this more often with blondes). I've noticed that women with very thick hair tend to have individually thicker strands, but also hair that seems more uniformly dense.
