Is it possible to put a hair comb into hair that's already been styled, just as an accessory?
I was looking at one today, so shiny and sparkly, but was concerned that since I wear my hair in a bun 85% of the time, that I wouldn't have a use for it, or that if I tried to add it as a decorative accessory, that it wont stay in place.

Would I be able to use a hair comb with my hair already up? just... slide it on in there and hope it stays?

I notice when watching some traditional Asian culture videos that some of the women had their combs secured in their buns and in their hairdos, so it must be possible. :)

Certainly. Hair combs are used decoratively all the time. Weddings and formal events especially use them, but that’s no reason to hold off.

Here are some pictures. I drew mostly from formal, history-inspired, or historic styles. I haven’t linked any here, but combs and elaborate hair pieces were definitely used by many of the various Chinese courts across history. Some of the most beautiful hairpieces I’ve seen were at the National Palace museum in Taiwan.

For sure it's doable if your hair is nice and secured and you only use it as decoration. Yes!

Think of it this way. A hair stick is one tine. A comb is 7, 20, or 100 tines all running parallel.

If a hair stick would stay in, so will a comb.

And usually with the increased number, they stay in even better.

But as with everything, a little tension is helpful.

It depends on your hair type and the prongs of the comb. Your hair is 1a like mine, in which combs and sticks do not stay without extra anchoring with pins. I do occasionally add an accent piece, always using heavy pins crossed over each other to add stability.

Aaah the Maiko Geiko and Geisha. Their hairstyles are set up before they add the decorations, usually. But they're still so pretty...!

Thanks for the advice on it, and yeah while a hairstick is like a single tooth, that one tooth usually never goes straight into m y hair. pointy end away from scalp, then down through the bun for security.
though I had not considered using pins to hold one in place. Though, to be honest, as old as I am I haven't figured out how to use a bobby pin properly. they always feel loose, and grab the wrong strands xD

I use either sturdy Amish pins or long roller pins, never bobbies.

I have a few combs that I use for special occasions, and they definitely stay in when my hair is up. Especially if the tines have a little bulge midway through, to grip the hair better. Give it a try, they’re fun!

I never could get a comb to support an hairstyle, but as a decoration they are lovely!
