View Full Version : A Decade of Hair- How has your hair changed over the last 10 years?

Hi everyone and Happy New Year!!
I know SarahLabyrinth started a New Years thread a while back but since its the start of a new decade and everyone on the internet is sharing their "decade in review" I thought it would be fun to start one on here!
I was going through my old photos from high school and college and forgot how long my hair was before I chopped it all off in 2013!
Here's an album of the last 10 years of my hair journey, (https://forums.longhaircommunity.com/album.php?albumid=14099) what does yours look like?
Are you happy with the changes / progress you've made?

This is a fantastic idea for a thread! I can't create an album at the moment, but I'm happy with my progress considering how I wrecked my hair several times.

In 2009, my hair looked like this. It was bleached and permed (I loved 80s rock back then), and somehow still attached to my head. After that, I let the perm grow out.
https://forums.longhaircommunity.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=39155&d=1574662629
In late 2019, my hair looked like this, but I had had long hair for many years already.
https://forums.longhaircommunity.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=39230&d=1575144415
And of course, I've now decided to quit all chemical treatments so I'm looking forward to growing out my virgin hair. I'm not happy with all the carefully considered, bad choices I've made the past few years, but it was good to get all that out of my system I suppose.

Love this idea! Great pics Ylva and Snolol ^^
Here is me in 2010. Virgin hair with my natural locks, between WL and hip. It was like this, more or less, until 2016 when I decided to try dyes and henna >.<

And now. Growing out dyes and henna and the longest it has ever been! All thanks to my beloved LHC :crush:

I have so few photos of myself--the closest that I could find to 2010 was 2012, and not many actually show my hair well:

(Featuring a lot of my dad for some reason, lol!)
My hair is roughly the same length now as it was then, kind of yo-yo-ing in between waist/tailbone-ish and mid-thigh depending on what I liked at the time. Nothing's been "done" to it besides henna. I think it's developed a bit more curl over the years. The big difference is that I had a major lapse in haircare about three years ago. I was street-homeless for a while, then couch-hopping for about two years. I didn't cut my hair, but I also got really lax in caring for it at all (which happens when you don't have access to your own living space : P). Since then, I've been dealing with a lot more frizz and flyaways. I think my hair had always been pretty well-moisturized up until then, and I finally managed to fry it. Eh, well. Trying to put some moisture back in and find some new ways to style it so that I can spread out the wear and tear a little more!

I just recently was looking at pictures from 2007. I am not going to be posting the pictures here since they are quite private and it's open here. But I had a long layered bob with an ashy mid-tone blonde dye in it that I was growing out. Smoothly blow dried (no texture whatsoever). And someone remarked (Dutch/Belgian forum Raponsje) on how different it looked back them. For sure I was still going through dye phases at the time.

I began the decade with APL hair and ended at mid-calf, which I'm pretty happy with! I've vastly improved in the world of hair-care, largely owing to TLHC :o
I decided to grow my hair out around 2011-12, and I saw slow growth at first as my ends were splitting pretty badly from bleach and heat damage. I slowly trimmed out the worst of it, ditched bad habits, and over this decade have seen it grow longer than I thought possible. It's exceeded my expectations and initial goal length, and I feel too curious to stop just yet :p
I found a photo from each year to summarize:

Can I just say how much I LOVE this thread?!!! After three years of growing, I started to wonder if this is the longest I can achieve, but now I'm starting to see that maybe that is very short-sighted thinking. This is truly a long game and you all are crushing it!!!

Awesome thread, I love all these pictures. Looks like everyone has made really good progress too, y'all sound happy with your hair! I wish I had pictures from the past ten years, but it wouldn't be anything as cool as what Sarah and Lapis posted. I had longish hair, then cut to shoulder, and now it's longish again.

2010 I was at apl. I straightened it and let it grow till end of May 2016 then cut back to bsl from hip. Previously to joining here I would flat iron it frequently. I joined LHC and started good hair care. I am now at 80cm unstretched.

In 2010 I was wearing a pixie, and @ 2012 grew it out to chin length.
My silver was coming in a finer/curlier version than that of my medium texture tawny dark blonde hair so I decided (with LHC inspiration/encouragement) to grow all silver and long.
Over the next few years I grew out my layers to one length and hit TBL in 2017.
Now I am 95% silver, one length, and keep my it between Waist and Hip.
I do quarterly hemline maintenance and my landmarks are only a few inches apart so it grows out fast. :flower:

I started the decade with fluffy, frizzy, uncontrollable, rage-inducing curls no longer than BSL~. They were dry, damaged ends, and the whole mess basically lived in a pony/braid under a bandanna. I visited a hairdresser every 2-4 months to try and keep my hair somewhat tamed; and generally ignored the mess as much as physically possible.
I’m ending the decade with happy, calm, proper curls down to mid-thigh. The ends are a little old, but they are healthy, and split/frizz free. I live almost full time in buns these days, but I get a lot more variety with my hair now. I can occasionally leave my hair out without wanting to scream at it. I don’t bother with hairdressers anymore since they no longer suit what I’m trying to achieve and I don’t need the extra expense or time commitment. I still ignore my hair for days at a time but it’s less about avoiding it and more accepting that my hair just prefers being left alone most of the time.
Overall, I’m going to say this decade has been something of a game-changer for my hair.

It's been a very important decade hair-wise!
2010: I get High school diploma, and as a reward I dye my hair red, and then a caramel golden brown.
2011: after a year of box dyes, my hair is thinned out and my scalp is freaking out; I discover henna and my hair starts thickening again. Looking for henna information I stumble on LHC.

I will be celebrating 10 years of conscious hair care and growth this March! (I started in March 2010.) When I started, my hair was about BSL, very frizzy and brittle from the constant use of a blowdryer and, later, a flat iron. It took me about 7 years to grow it to classic with constant trimming. This included one major trim of 23 cm - about 9" - done in the course of a few days in order to get rid of all the oldest, thinnest, damaged parts at once. Otherwise I would never grow my hair long, these ends were too fragile and the damage was constantly creeping upwards.
I've been at classic length since the summer of 2017. Now I'm working on thickening my ends.
In terms of the condition of my hair, it's much, much better than I thought it could ever be. I'm very focused on moisturising, and - when well moisturised - my hair can be smooth and relatively sleek (as much as high/medium porosity hair can ever be).
I'm often amused by the fact that it's been 10 years already. Very many things have changed in my life throughout this time. But I'm still into hair and I love this journey as much as ever :)

I was so cute, why didn't I appreciate how cute I was?
And today, in 2020. All one length and coming up on mid thigh.

I had a big chop in there so I haven't been growing continuously. And now that I'm reflecting, I had my natural color and no shorter than shoulder the entire time. :o So maybe it wasn't as much of a transformation as I thought lol.

The decade found me in several different lengths of hair. Pretty much short and shorter. A few times, I would try to grow out my hair it would get weird and I didn’t know what to do with it so I would go back to ultra short. It was 2017 when I had grown out my blond color and went natural that I finally made it past the weirdness to longer lengths! I think I’m making it to my life long dream of long hair thanks to LHC!

Yes, IKWYM. I caved to impulse many many times. It took me 10 years to get to classic because of my whiles. ;) I was a handful when I got here with my dyes and cuts and whathaveyou. I'm glad I calmed down and focused my energy on just growing it already. :D

Mine has changed a lot! I once had lovely long hair with a 4” ponytail circumference. By 10 years ago I was approaching knee length and my circumference had shrank a little, down to 3.75”. Then things went bad. My health went downhill and my ponytail circumference shrunk to 1.75”. Most of my length was so thin I could no longer properly detangle and style it, so I chopped back to BSL. I kept it in the BSL to waist range for years while recovering. Then a few years ago I developed a horrible scalp pain problem. Every movement of hair hurt and it was getting worse and worse with time. I tried an undercut to reduce the weight of my hair, then gave up and did a mowhawk for two days before buzzing it all off. It took months of maintaining a buzz cut for the pain problem to heal. I then kept it in a pixie for a while and played with some bleaching and henna. Eventually the pain returned (where it had started before, at the very front where some people have widow’s peak). This time I tried just cutting in bangs, and that fixed it. So now I’m growing again, currently between APL and BSL (with my bangs staying shorter than the pain point).

I don't have any pictures of my hair going back to 2010 in digital format. I chopped my ~hip length hair to shoulder length about a decade ago. I think it was fall of 2009. So I've gone from a bit past shoulder length at the start of the decade to about a foot past floor length.

Wow. This thread is so inspiring! In 2010 my baby fine virgin golden-blonde hair was ii thick and longer than BSL-- midback or so, and all one length. I wore it down, ignored it, English braided it or put it in a scrunchie, ripped brushes through it carelessly, washed it too roughly, used blow dryers, curling irons and hairspray to get that 80s-90s "curly big fluffy" look. I thought that was so pretty at the time.
Today my fine super thin, straight hair is beginning to change color and I'm going to let it happen and see how I like it. I've never dyed it in my life. I'm hoping for longer and silver, and hoping for ii volume again. I'll be taking very good care of it now.

I wish I could find the very first hair picture I took, but sadly, it got lost when my PC tragically passed away from old age.
Here's the second oldest, November 2010 vs November 2019

I only recently realized that my thickness did grow! My ends used to be see-through at this length, and now they're much thicker. Other than that, nothing really changed length-wise. Still at waist, duh. I chopped it to APL-BSL a few times, grew to tailbone, changed hemlines, hennaed... Went through more hair care routines than I can count, but returned to good old sulfates and silicones in the end.
On to another decade! I hope my hair would be longer than waist in 2030

I would like to take part but as it’s a public forum I’ll have to censor the pics, sorry for that in advance.
I am not sure about exact dates, but these are pics of my hair in the past ten years in cronological order:

I'm back with my album :) It has taken me three hours to source a photo for each phase and upload it. They aren't in order though (but they are dated), which I can't seem to fix unless I reupload them all - and I don't want to do that shudder:

Tinyponies I think we have a similar hairtype and hair colour. :) I'd love to compare routines to see how similar or different they are. It always amazes me how people with similar hair can have such different routines.

What a fun post! I love seeing everyone's gorgeous hair through the years, and it's been fun to realize what all I've done in a decade (been indecisive, that's what!)
In 2009, I was wearing this floof:
https://i.postimg.cc/pdTRYVnF/hair-decade-2009.jpg (https://postimages.org/)
https://i.postimg.cc/yNJ28DZv/hair-decade-2009-2.jpg (https://postimages.org/)
Description: I'm not even sure what this haircut is. Like a very full grown-out pixie, but without a mullet look?? The whole thing tapers from side-swept bangs down to the back, juuust long enough to stop the matador curls at eye-level.
Until later that year I decided to chop it all off for a very short pixie to ensure I wouldn't get matador curls again and because, what the heck! Thick short-ish hair is very hot! Of course, I chopped it off right before the weather turned cold:
https://i.postimg.cc/DyTWQsf4/hair-decade-2009-3.jpg (https://postimages.org/)
Description: A slightly spikey pixie look
By 2011 I started to grow it out again:
https://i.postimg.cc/hG6vXQ3j/hair-decade-2011.jpg (https://postimages.org/)
Description: Still short enough that it's not a mullet...yet
Still growing in 2012. Oh yes, that wonderful time when I said I would keep my bangs, because bangs had looked good with shorter hair, not yet realizing that my bangs no longer had the fullness that was so flattering. Everyone said "your bangs look like you've been scalped!" and I said "I can't stand hair in my eyes I'll do what I want!!!" and told the hairdresser to cut them shorter. Looking back at the photos now everyone was right and I have regrets:
https://i.postimg.cc/DzHQ7ZrQ/hair-decade-2012.jpg (https://postimages.org/)
Description: Not sure how far past shoulder length my hair was here, but boy do I remember fighting to get those twin braids in! I assure you, there's definitely, like, one solid inch of braid above those hair ties. Probably.
Still growing in 2013:
https://i.postimg.cc/hvr7QPd5/hair-decade-2013.jpg (https://postimages.org/)
Description: Maybe almost to APL now? I was reliving childhood Legend of Zelda nostalgia.
By sheer force of will I made it almost to BSL in 2014! :
https://i.postimg.cc/PxnL68b7/hair-decade-2014.jpg (https://postimages.org/)
Description: Probably just an inch, maybe 2, away from BSL
But I took that picture right before I chopped it all off in in another pixie! :

Part 2!
In 2015 I got a chameleon and I have! No pictures of me at all! Just chameleon!
At the start of 2016 Katia broke me down and I finally started listening to her talk of LHC and the magic of hair forks and the promise of real buns, and so I radically changed up my hair care and started growing all at the same time! I could make a high ponytail by October! Sort of:
https://i.postimg.cc/Bv73bWbB/hair-decade-2016-2.jpg (https://postimages.org/)
Description: A ponytail that at least caught most of my hair. Also, chameleon.
This is either late 2016 or early 2017:
https://i.postimg.cc/2SzNxjBx/hair-decade-2016-3.jpg (https://postimages.org/)
Description: A half-up. I'm going to call that shoulder length, or just barely.
This isn't a good picture of my 2017 hair, I'm just a nerd. But I'm pretty sure I had finally managed a nape ponytail! :
https://i.postimg.cc/MGLkxy3s/hair-decade-2017.jpg (https://postimages.org/)
Description: Holding a Legend of Zelda themed hair fork I got as a gift, with the whole picture framed as an Item Get pose because I'm a nerd
A nice strong APL length in 2018:
https://i.postimg.cc/P5f0w6B3/hair-decade-2018.jpg (https://postimages.org/)
Description: A very U-shaped hemline, so the longest parts are about halfway between APL and BSL but I'd consider it APL
This 2019 pic is a terrible judge of length, BSL or maybe slightly longer? But it's pretty:
https://i.postimg.cc/15vJLyjB/hair-decade-2019.jpg (https://postimg.cc/SJz69bqY)
Description: Hair down with princess braids
And then of course there's the undercut that I slid in at the end of 2019! But I've already posted a bunch of pictures of that in the Undercut Thread. Here's to getting longer and more satisfied in 2020!

So I've spent this entire decade with short to medium hair lol!!! And spent a lot of that time yearning for long hair :/
As you can see I experimented a lot, so I'm glad to have gotten that out of my system.
I'm planning on not cutting my hair again for the foreseeable future, so hopefully my post in 2030 (wow!!!) will be more inspiring :)

Well, I have no idea what my hair was 10 years ago. But it has mostly been between (almost) APL and neck.
I just renewed my passport, so for five years ago (summer/autumn) my hair was at neck/chin/jaw length something. I guess it was shortest it has been during these ten years. Then in the end of that year it was at shoulder, and I saw one ponytail picture from that time, and my pony was really thin. I was bit surprised to find out, that the latest 5 years I have had mostly quite short hair, around shoulder.

Omg, i LOVE this thread. Everyone has made amazing progress... :crush:
The earliest pic i found was in 2011 summer. My hair was BSL, natural and heavilly lightened by the sun
https://i.imgur.com/1ZWxdC5.jpg
Then in about 2012 i cut it to shoulder and dyed it red then put henna on top:
https://i.imgur.com/H3Un8pM.jpg
In 2013 it went even shorter ( my friend cut it for me, so it turned out quite uneven.) I kept using henna on it:
https://i.imgur.com/K8xMBJL.jpg
I grew for around 3-4 years and in summer 2017 it looked like this:
https://i.imgur.com/KtXTtg6.jpg
I was also started growing natural somewhere around 2016
https://i.imgur.com/Bkn4OMC.jpg
Then at the end of summer 2017 i chopped it all off
https://i.imgur.com/ybrYsP4.jpg
And in a couple of months i dyed it dark brown/black
https://i.imgur.com/YWeXm5X.jpg
I maintained there for a year or so. Then i rejoined LHC and started growing again. I have experimented with various products and routines and started growing out natural during the last two years.
And here i am now, hair dye almost grown out, texture completely different, almost reaching BSL again...

Amazing photos on here, love this thread!
I don't have any pictures to hand of me in 2010, but I was 15/16 and had no idea how to care for my hair. It was around collarbone length, had really short layers, it was thinned and feathered and I had a swooping "emo" fringe. It was box dyed red and then bleached to blonde this year. I barely rinsed conditioner through when washing, had no clue was a deep conditioner or oil was, washed every other day and straightened every day.
In the last decade my hair has really been through the ringer - I only started learning how to properly care for it after bleaching it half to death to dye it bright blue. After many years of bright colours and platinum hair, I finally ditched bleach early 2018 and haven't touched it since. My hair is the healthiest it has ever been :)

Oh wow! Well, you can see my hip/TB length at the beginning of this decade in my profile, and it was as such until 2016 or so. Then I chopped it all off, from BSL to SL, and then to an inverted bob, pretty much short at the neck.
I enjoyed it a lot, I admit, but lately, coming to a lob last year, I'm thinking of growing it out again. The temptation to cut is strong but still, I'd like those braids and buns again!

2010 was 2 years after I had started my hair journey. Going from buzzed to chin length, I was so desperate to grow my hair out. My hair grew excruciatingly slow. I remember I would have dreams of having long hair again, and not want to wake up. I was so unhappy. Fast forward, a decade later, my hair is down to the back of my knees. I feel like myself, am much more confident. I feel so in tune with my body. I feel more feminine and so accomplished that I dedicated over 10 years to reaching a personal goal.

Last decade was a mess. I had fun digging through my photos and trying to figure out what happened and when.
I dyed my hair and changed the color constantly until I ended up totally destroying my hair and couldn't dye it anymore. I don't think I'm showing any pictures, by 2015 it was so damaged and fried you'd have nightmares.
-2010 I had a pixie cut, about an inch or two long from the back, a bit longer from the top, some longer face framing layers at the sides. I had dyed my hair from black to bleach blonde. Changed the color to caramel blonde, orange, fox red...
-2011 the same cut, bright red.
-2012 back to blonde. Left my fringe red though. I had the same cut but it was a bit longer, the longest parts were maybe chin length?
-2013 still blonde, growing more
-2014 back to red, growing... Around SL
-2015 tried to dye it darker brown. The color faded back to red. Dyed it again. It went back to red. Bleached it and attempted to get rid of the redness. It was still turning back to red. Bleached it again with some extremely powerful peroxide and dyed it again to darker brown, close to my natural color... by the end of the year it was APL?
-2016 my hair had changed to a mixture of bleach blonde and weird reddish...brown... something. I gave up, stopped dyeing and kept on growing. Had serious issues with my scalp and allergic reactions and tried to find a way to fix the constant irritation, burning and flaking. BSL?
-2017 got a small haircut at a hair salon to even out the hemline a bit. No dyes. Stopped using silicones and harsh sulfates. MBL?
-2018 no dyes, no cuts, some microtrims. Still no cones, some occasional mild sulfates. WL/HL
-2019 no cuts, some microtrims, got annoyed with the bleach and my boring natural color and hennaed my hair. Researched more for natural haircare. Stopped using shampoo and switched to herbs. Did a very short, secret cone-experiment (don't tell anyone ) which was a disaster and continued with herbs, no cones, no sulfates. TBL
aaaand I'm back to red again. Let's see how long I can keep the current color until I get bored and decide to do something stupid. I don't have any plans to do so but I'm not promising anything. The bleach caused so many problems so I can't imagine ever going back.

Well, 10 years ago is about when I started lurking LHC and felt aspired for long hair! Mine was in almost a bowl cut and pretty dark (like had a purple/bluish tint in the sun) and pretty thick. Now as I get older, idk if it's simply age and hormones or a sign of malnutrition, but my hair is finer, more voluminous, light brown in the sun, and have natural highlights. And of course, much much longer that my teenager self would have never have dared to dream. And inbetween the years, I've been brunette, blonde, redheaded... it was great!

Since I'm almost 19, 10 years is more than half my life-span, so this should be interesting.
2010 (age 9): I was not taking care of my hair, and since it is so different from my mom's she didn't know what to do with it. She has fine, thin, straight hair. I have thick, wavy/wurly, coarse blond hair. As a result, it was chopped into a cl bob.
2011-2015 (age 10 to 14): I did pretty much every terrible thing I could to my hair, except use heat tools and color it. Left it down all the time, brushed out my curls (even when wet!) in an attempt to have straight hair. It was still tailbone length because I never cut it, but the bottom half of my hair was a split-end, fraying, mess. I didn't know how to take care of it at all. The texture was also really sandy at this point.
2016 (15): I cut all the damage off! It was not well planned, but it did the trick. I cut 14 inches off, putting my hair at BSL. Hated the cut, thoroughly regretted it. However, it turned out for the best, because even though I really missed my long hair, it was now healthy and I could start over.
2017-2020 (16-18): I started actually taking care of my hair. I started following a girl on YouTube who had natural 4c-ish hair, and was introduced to The Curly Girl Method. I discovered that my hair was not frizzy and untameable, just curly and I didn't know it. I also found Lilla Rose, and then LHC! Now I have healthy, TBL hair, with a blunt hemline, a decent curl pattern, and a soft texture. Trying to get Classic length by the end of the year!

2010 I had a fried bleach mess :D
Then 2011 I dyed it black..it looked awful!
2011-2012 I went back to blonde...by then my hair just...well, it was in awful shape. I'd blow dry it then iron it after bleaching it...yeaaah..
End of 2012 I finally started coming to this forum more and FINALLY listened to the advice everyone posted and decided no more bleach, dye, heat, etc.
2013-2016 - Had really, really nice shiny auburn hair, very easy to manage and thick
2016-2017 - Bleached it again and regretted it. It's so cheap to bleach around where I live and they did a nice job..its just an awful idea for my wurly hair. It became dry, filled with tangles and splits.
2017 - stopped bleaching, cut it all off
2018-2020 - I am closing in on waist again with 100% virgin hair and regained my thickness and such. I am done dying and bleaching for sure and never doing it again. I think the most I would do someday is try henna if I go grey lol.

Wow....I'm small. I've had my hair blonde, red, natural brunette, pink and ombre. It went from near classic in 2010 to bob in 2015 to pixie in 2016.
Currently growing it out w/ natural color, at mid-back length.

At the beginning of this decade my hair was waist length! Looking at pictures from then always gives me inspiration and I can’t wait for my hair to grow that long again. In 2014 I chopped and donated my hair, leaving it at chin length. The rest of the decade was a cycle of growing it out and chopping it off again 😂 . I’m determined that this decade will have zero chops and hair longer than I’ve ever had!

OMG I love the pics!! so many I want to comment on but can I just say, I want to be all your friends and style your hair soooo badly!!!
My hair has changed so much through the decades but within the last decade I went from heavily heavily layered hair (I would trim layers in pretty much weekly) and dyed to now letting my layers grow out and no dye - plus now I'm silicone free and for the most part sulfate free and have discovered I have wavy hair. Who knew?? I mean it'd only been growing out of my scalp for 30ish years before I realised.
oh and forgot about my eyebrow hair! i used to over pluck then semi pluck. Now my brows go completely untouched and as bushy as they like!

I love this thread, so cool to see everyone's transformations!! Here's mine :)
I couldn't find any pics from 2010 so I'll start at 2011: my hair was bleached and badly damaged from using heat every day
https://forums.longhaircommunity.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=40218&d=1581364255
2012: still bleached and still damaged
https://forums.longhaircommunity.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=40219&d=1581364275
2013: i dyed my hair firetruck red and then black i think 2 days later because i hated it lol
https://forums.longhaircommunity.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=40220&d=1581364288
2014: i let my friend cut my hair because i was sick of the damage, this was the shortest it's ever been
https://forums.longhaircommunity.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=40221&d=1581364307
2015: my hair grew a little bit and i was still experimenting with hair dye
https://forums.longhaircommunity.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=40222&d=1581364327
I will continue in next post

Continued:
2016: i went back to my favorite platinum blonde look and my hair grew a little more
https://forums.longhaircommunity.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=40223&d=1581364335
2017: i cut my hair to shoulder and decided i wanted to start growing it long
https://forums.longhaircommunity.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=40227&d=1581364888
2018: my hair was the longest it's ever been! i was pregnant in 2017 so i think that contributed to the huge amount of growth i had.
https://forums.longhaircommunity.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=40224&d=1581364360
2019: towards the end of 2018 i started dying my hair A LOT and using heat again, resulting in a lot of damage and it stopped growing at all. i decided to chop it and stop dying it once and for all
https://forums.longhaircommunity.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=40225&d=1581364374
2020: i am officially 1 year bleach/dye free! by the end of 2019 i was at BSL but ended up chopping it again to get rid of some of the bleached ends. i plan on growing all 2020 without any big chops.

Oh this is an amazing thread and I keep meaning to come here with my own pics. There's not much difference, only in length (and I hope health) - I've always been boring  But my goodness, so many of you have had wild journies! One thing I love about LHC is the wealth of diverse experiences people bring :D

In the last 10 years the condition of my hair dramatically changed when I stopped using shampoo. Style wise I’ve gone from past waist to collarbone to just above tailbone and now it’s waist length with a nape undercut.

Here's a repost of a blog that I did on the LHC, it's not exactly perfect for this, but it's PRETTY CLOSE! Adding a more recent photo at the bottom. :)
One of the great things about having a smart phone with a lot of space is that you can keep pictures since 2008 on there... last night I combed through and got a picture of pretty much every weird thing I did to my hair from 2011 to today.
https://i.imgur.com/q0jF5Jpl.jpg
Top Row: 04/2011 dyed red and to eventually to my shoulder blades.... but I cut it off to my chin 10/2011; 11/2011, I had forgotten I can't touch up my roots, so I had to bleach out the red; 02/2012, hair so damaged, and my toner dye refused to stay put.
Middle:7/2013 dye mishap resulted in this... I hated this; 8/2013 SO MUCH that I went to the salon for a dye removal; 09/2013, it was better than the copper top...
Bottom Row: 12/2013, bleached and dyed again; 06/2014, pregnant in 02, so no dye, toner dye washed out, leaving me with this hombre (Home+Ombre, ahahah); 08/2014, cut a few inches of bleach out.
https://i.imgur.com/x6r14w9l.jpg
Top Row: 10/2014, about to give birth, wanted a 60's vibe for the pictures, ahaha; 04/2015, if only I could have just quit while I was ahead, after I trimmed my pixie layers 100% virgin hair; 09/15, growing growing growing.
Middle: 12/2015 BUT RED IS WHO I AM INSIDE!; 02/2016, about to start supervising 19 year olds, thought short hair would make me look more authoritative; 03/2016, yet another bleach and tone dye because baby can't dye her roots.
Bottom: 09/2016, guess how long the dye stayed in.... 09/2016; so I toned it again. 03/2017, and growing growing growing....
https://i.imgur.com/heoYGH7l.jpg
07/2017, I join LHC, and I cut 5 or so inches of bleach off the ends of my hair; 10/2017, growing growing growing; 02/2018.... Grew my hair from 15 inches in July to 20 in February with trims thanks to LHC.
I hope this was fun! :)

Well in 2010 I was only 14 so I had one-length virgin hair. Now I have face framing layers and my bottom layer is bleached. 2011 is when I started actually doing things to my hair other than washing and brushing lol.

Oh my goodness I feel like everyone's hair grows much faster than mine! Granted, I had a few haircuts in the past decade, but my hair has never in that time been shorter than APL when curly (probably around 2013) and is now just past classic when stretched.
It used to be curlier when it was shorter, too.
I had no grays/silvers that I knew of in 2010. Now I have a diffuse sprinkling everywhere.
I learned to trim my own hair during this decade.
I learned about and started using vinegar rinses in 2010, and I learned about essential oils.
I learned about and started using oils in my hair and on my scalp during this past decade.
I started doing S&D this decade.
My hair began to feel heavy for the first time in my life this decade.
My hair stopped being damaged by ball tipped brushes, elastics (for the most part) and sleeping with it loose (for the most part)
My hair is silkier and has less taper than it used to. At the same time, my hair is thinner than it was a decade ago, but that's a relatively recent change (in the past year) and I haven't yet figured out why.

In 2010, my hair was long, probably BCL. Now it is nearing hip length! I've had a heck of a hair journey in the middle with orange, blonde, brown, pink, and purple hair as well as every haircut under the sun.

For me, the last decade has probably seen the biggest variation in my hair length. Before that I was sometimes around chin length, but mostly approx BSL - and I would have stated that my hair didn't get any longer than that! In March of 2010 I broke my upper left arm, and had my hair cut to pixie for manageability. I kept it that length for most of that year or more I think. Eventually the constant going to the hairdressers was getting annoying (including the surprise at how long it was given the time between appointments) and I began to let it grow out some. I got it trimmed a few times after this on the way to BSL again - including either chin length or a bob. Around 2016 it was past BSL, 2020 it is now heading for BCL - although I have taken some inches off during that time.

10 years ago my hair was mainly shoulder length for a while, being straightened and dyed most of the time. Then about 5 years ago, I had a disastrous spiral perm, which saw chucks of hair falling out at times (thankfully, not enough to really thin the hair) and not the best haircut - cut too short by the hairdresser, turning it into a frizzy puff.:(
Now, I’m determined to grow it as long as possible, now that I taking much better care with my hair. It’s now just pass BSL and don’t care that I’ve got greys now.

OMG I graduated highschool a decade ago?! XD
Okay so in 2010 I quit dying my hair because I figured out it was causing a lot of my dryness. Then in 2016 I quit using heat.
Between then and now i have been growing out virgin hair and took up LHC care methods. Texture has taken a complete 180 and I actually like my hair now.
As for length, it was at it's longest in 2019 before I went off grid, but when I came back to life as we know it, I had to cut off a lot of CRAP. That was back in November I believe. I was at tailbone before a chop, now I am just about 4 inches from elbow. So elbow is my goal for the year.
Graduation, marriage, and the birth of 3 kids not to mention moving across the country and back.

The 10 year hair journey is really my hair journey in general.
Long, tapered hair that I ripped through wet with a ball-tipped paddle brush. This was the longest it had ever been.

The first chop:
https://i.imgur.com/gmFyc5h.jpg
What my hair actually looked like most of the time if I didn't straighten it:
https://i.imgur.com/WFR9FlC.jpg?1
I let it grow and started reading internet stuff about long hair. I couldn't even conceive hair longer than tailbone. I'd never seen it before. I tried wearing my hair up and found that I loved it. It wasn't easy until past BSL, though. I was in marching band and wore a sunhat that didn't allow for a bun, so I had my hair down in a braid every day for 3 years. The sun lightening is pretty obvious in these pictures.

One of my first hairstick buns! A stabbed cinnabun:
https://i.imgur.com/wjzA9XN.jpg?1
Here's a picture of my braid. I posted about it, worried about the fact that I was seeing taper for the first time in my life and at longer lengths, my hair would taper. Lo and behold, I am like just about everybody else and have noticeable taper. My hair at knee will be extremely tapered. And you know what? That's just natural. As much as I'd love to have hair like Ligeia Noire or Gossamer and have limited taper at extreme lengths, I'm happy with my hair.
https://i.imgur.com/GkX3EV1.jpg?1
Now I'm almost at knee, and my hair is in a bun all the time and doesn't have much sun lightening.
https://i.imgur.com/Lo8teRk.jpg?1
And here's a hair typing pic:
https://i.imgur.com/MVS4VfN.jpg?1
My hair's pretty frizzy and "flyaway," with straggly ends and lots of taper, and is mousy brown or dirty blonde. I have witch hair! By conventional standards, it's basic at best and a foot or three too long. The biggest change in my hair journey is accepting that my hair is not from a hair commercial and that even though I'm never going to naturally have model hair, what I have is mine and it suits me.

I love seeing everyone's progress, though it's especially startling and inspiring with you all who have super long hair!
Mine has been more about embracing my natural texture than growing – for now. Might try and find some old pictures later. :)

Great photos!
This is 2010 vs 2020. I cut to a graduated bob in Oct 2009, I grew to BSL/MBL until 2012, then cut back to shoulder length and had my fringe cut. Started growing properly from APL in approx 2015 but seem to have stalled for the last couple of years around WL.

2010: I have an overgrown bob. I heat style my hair and use hairspray. My hair grows out, I start washing it only twice a week, my hair grows and grows, bob again, it grows out, I want to bob it again but I don't, I find coconut oil, I find bamboo brushes, I find the miracle of wearing my hair up so it's not bothering me.
2020: I think my last itch to cut my hair was four years ago, I'm happy that I didn't cut it :D Over the decade I didn't know what I wanted to do with my hair, so I went from long to short. (And my hair grows/grew fast, so it didn't matter.) Elbow length was my longest length. After realizing that I can grow it longer and after learning some buns and braids I've been happy with my long hair. Though lately I have had weird bob thoughts again lol. I'm not going to do it, maybe I just need some variety to my updos again.
Well, I learned a lot about my hair, I created my routine, so it was a good decade :D

Up until 2019, I was regularly trimming every three months. So with the straightening and dyeing, my hair wasn’t gaining much length from the damage. No trims between August 2019 and March 2020. I’ve joined the 2nd half of 2020 no trimming thread and hoping to hit WL by the end of the year!

In 2009, my hair looked like this. It was bleached and permed (I loved 80s rock back then), and somehow still attached to my head. After that, I let the perm grow out.

And of course, I've now decided to quit all chemical treatments so I'm looking forward to growing out my virgin hair. I'm not happy with all the carefully considered, bad choices I've made the past few years, but it was good to get all that out of my system I suppose.
Wish it was out of my system! would make growing it much easier for me, I'm impressed you've gotten so far! I'll just live precariously through you Instead

The most radical change my hair went through in the past 10 years is, well, right now. It’s been in the same pixie-ish short style for these entire 10 years, until we went into quarantine and I decided to grow it out. I also changed the way I part it for the first time in my life (it has always been parted on the side and I went for a center part instead), and started brushing it out so that it’s more wavy than curly.
It’s getting pretty close to chin length, which is the longest it’s been for years.

I don't have a lot of pictures of myself alone in the decade between then and now. I maintained this style until probably 2012 or 2013. I ended up in a rough spot after that and didn't have my hair professionally cut for five years and I only rarely brushed it. I think it got to tailbone length or thereabouts. Then I spent a few years getting salon cuts once a year to waist length with layers. I had a pretty massive shed in 2017 due to some personal struggles. I joined here around 2018 mostly just to learn how to take care of my hair better and this is one of my fuzzy length photos from then.

I maintained hip for most of 2018 and 2019 to regain some thickness, but then I got LHC-itis. I have recently decided to grow it to classic and today I noticed it's BCL. I still have bangs, just fewer and they're the longer side-swept bangs. I may grow them out eventually but I'm not sure.
